You seem to have been sparring in both of their preferred ranges, rather than your own. That's making things difficult for yourself. With that in mind, you did much better than you gave yourself credit for.
Some things you did well, others not so much. I would encourage you focus on some boxing fundamentals like keeping both hands up by your cheeks and practicing some head movement like slipping and bobbing and weaving. You tended to stay in your opponents range, don't let them dictate the fight. I also didn't see you cutting many angles like Mike was doing. Good for you putting this out there. Sparring is tough.
I already subscribed, but this video gave me some serious newfound respect for you. I'm gonna remind myself to buy some stuff from your sponsors because encouraging your partner to actually hit you, take multiple shots that actually hurt, and not change intensity (up or down) is just impressive. Guess that's why you're Hard2Hurt LOL.
That jumping punch he landed in the first round is something he did a video on years ago that he calls the bizarro punch. Kinda cool to see that he's still doing all that old stuff too
That looks like real chill and controlled sparring. Awesome! Seth is just incredible. The jokes and the downplaying of his own skills plus him constantly sparring out of his comfort zone kinda makes you forget how good that guy is! But you definitely gave him some problems to solve
Thing I really liked about this spar on both sides was that you can tell both guys are trying stuff that is probably their weaker suit. Mike was incorporating spinning and some flashier stuff and you were getting used to being in an uncomfortable range at times which was right in Mike's wheelhouse. This is how good sparring should be, I've seen so much stuff where someone tries something it doesn't come off and they get pummeled so never try it again for fear of that again. Problem is with that is you then only stick to your safe stuff and never expand your repetoire, this way is much better.
I think Seth probably still thinks that the first good hit is the end of the engagement. Don't let him have his reset. Mike is tricky, use your range, kick the legs and body, keep your face away. Your commentary was good, but your circles of highlights were excellent. Having a visual to refer to makes the comments mean much more. I wouldn't mind seeing the same two seconds of footage ten times if it was highlighted and commented upon in a way that made me appreciate it fully :) thank you
That’s about what I expected. You did real well against Mike in the first round, I could see he visibly looked hurt right when you mentioned it. He came back in the second, which seems to be his style (come on and hit me, I’m just gonna keep walking forward). Seemed like Seth gave you a bit more trouble, which I’d imagine is the size advantage plus his karate background making him more accustomed to flashier techniques. Wild to see “monk rings bell” work in real life, I’m so used to seeing it in movies and didn’t even know it had a name. I like to incorporate a Roy Jones-style open guard/gazelle punch and Mike’s “bizarro punch” and they both work pretty well, I bet this would fit in nicely with those techniques.
@@metrolinamartialarts Tip for your fav tech. Leave it in there. Whichever one hits, you get a free one inch punch style follow up off of it usually immediately and effectively. Triggers the guard to go to block another in the same area (head or gut) and then you get your #3 by punching the hole he leaves upon doing it. Also, the hands don't always have to be 12 to 6 from each other. Tech works for overhand right and body hook as well with a little bit of an angle on them. Still delivers like monk rings bell, but you can add the left right decision to the high low decision the opponent is having to make about blocking it.
You did well, its always fun sparring new partners, especially those with different backgrounds and skill sets. You held your own well with them, especially when tired. Most dudes won't post up sparring videos, so props for that too.
Amazing dparring with Icy Mike. Is great to see people who enjoy sparring in this friendly manner and also learning a lot from it in such an excited way. Icy mike at the end of the round sparred like he always say they do it at their place, going a bit harder when they are tired.
Do you place your dominant hand forward? Early JKD wants lead hand forward to end fights quickly, but seems a bit counter-philosophy to the spirit of sparring. Sparring seems like a good place to do a few things: 1. Test out ideas 2. Get a workout in 3. Build skills for sport fighting. 4 (NEW!). Create intrigue for your social media, especially with collaborating with TH-camrs. Which one did you primary end up doing for this session? Good execution of techniques even with gloves on. Curious to see a (even lighter) sparring session with gloves off and goggles on so you can practice finger jabs to the eyes, and more controlled tech like inside leg kick instead of groin shots. In 'end the fight asap' situations like that, dominant hand forward makes more sense. Might be a challenge for those without much experience in that stance.
Was about to ask about this, but you just explained everything beautifully. This is definitely the most fascinating martial arts channel to watch, given the uniqueness of what's done.
This was great to watch! Seeing 3 different backgrounds working through each other's moves was really interesting to see! Thanks for sharing - I thought you did well 😊
That was great Ed. Mike is definitely a great fighter, however you had a few cool combos up your sleeve too! Your narrating also made it 10X better. Just awesome 👏🏽!
What I like about this, more than the quality and variety and how interesting the strategies are, is that the whole time there is a concerted friendliness, generosity and respectfulness, whilst you are both trying to throw the kitchen sink at the other person.
You can always tell JKD guys and gals that spar consistently! Looking good reminds me of Anderson Silva and Connor McGregor, Icy Mike does a lot of stand and bang dutch esq muay thai, with that Jose Aldo style trickery! Sensi Seth reminds me of Andy Hug and Machida. I love how tired you guys all got good stuff!
Just discovered your channel after seeing you with Mike and Seth in some of their stuff. Really cool seeing someone using JKD against other styles like this. I've been training with one of Guro Ron's students for a little while now and am just starting to try some of these things in our sparring as well.

Excellent stuff. Really great network going on out that way. Anywho, you did well enough! Mike is an angry old man who ruins young peoples' days, and Seth is apparently a giant? How tall is Seth? Great vid...I learned a lot about JKD and seeing it used in sparring was great.

How you did.. Well yeah the Mike was fun to watch. He has a tendency to start doing techniques that match the environment (see sparing footage of him and wonderboy to see "Karate Mike") so it was wild to watch him get super creative and "flowy" in a JKD gym. He had way more gas than you and it showed but it was a great "conversation". Yeah I'm gonna give myself the win on the Seth round. A big, long guy fighting with a big long style and used to dealing with short guys who want to hug him. Nightmare. You did *try* to sweep him so there ya go.
I'm glad I found another channel with good Kung Fu content. You ever check out Randy Brown Mantis Boxing? Dynasty MMA has some cool Kung Fu stuff as well. Keep up the good work!
Pretty amazing man this is the type of sparring I like. When your goal isn't to be a hard hitting fighter , you wanna train skill and technique. But ur fundamental stance if ud like to take my criticism. 45 to more side on. Less of a target to hit. You were very sqaure and left ur back arm down too. U can rest it at ur chin in a part position and it doesn't get sore to leave it there. Helps u counter as ur coming out of ur lead straight.
Great sparring footage. One of the complaints a friend that trained in JKD had was it was always JKD vs JKD. You're fighting against other styles outside of JKD so you're already breaking that mold. Now you need to figure out how to make your JKD techniques work against these other styles. Great work, overall!
Funny, in sparring (Muay Thai) when I miss the right lowkick and rotate trough mostly I immediately come back with the right kick to the ribs and I had no idea what kind of kick that is. Now after I watched your sparring video I know it's a twist kick. Thanks!

This was great. You’re fun to watch. I have no formal training but grew up rough. Seth’s legs are an issue. Wonder if stepping back and making him come to you so you can “crash” inside one of those side kicks he throws. Mike’s just a problem. I never would’ve let tensions escalate with him irl. Jesus.
as a fellow jkd fighter, i think you could box a little better. i didnt see enough uppercuts or hooks. or, hook off the jab. anyways, our art is largely unexplored in modern times, so i give you props for keeping it alive. keep going at it.... i've been doing the same as well
Looks like you guys have a lot of fun! I burst out laughing that Mike was disappointed you didn't kick him! Lol Also just subscribed! Keep up the great work!
1:01 in the video: only thing Icy Mike does is headbutt your jab, so you will kick his ass (what’s wrong with that guy? Why does he do that?!!) and Sensei Seth looks like some random guy just walked in by accident, until he head kicks you out of nowhere. Then he says ”chubby surprise” to the camera.
I’m new to your channel but you did great for your martial art. The thing is, actual fighting practitioners know when to rev the engine and when to let it idle. Mike knew there was more than one round so he idled on the first, then progressively revved it up later so he had more in the gas tank. That’s thinking ahead and hard to do without (or little) experience. You diminished as time went on and Mike stepped it up to take advantage. But you still kept your composure and decent form so you could still throw something in every now and then. But seriously, good work. Just practice and experience will trim more of the fat around your shortcomings.
I been studying Bruce lee JKD for two years and all I can say to the instructor expand your horizon with your way As he says there’s is no way of the way Muy Thai instructor He’s awesome !
Hey. So I noticed that you are missing a few fingers why am I pointing this out. Because my mom works with kids that are disabled either mentally or physically. I like that regardless of your disability you still have a passion for martial arts. It makes me really happy because my mom has gave me a respect for people with all disabilities. You don't let your disability hold you back and you have kind of inspired me a little bit. I'm already subscribed I hit that button the second I saw your channel and everything else I just mentioned too. Keep on doing what you're doing ☺️ See ya.
Good rounds. Seth gave you the “try and deal with my Karate” look. And Mike gave you the “I’m going to do whatever most of the round, and here and there I’m going to do something serious” look. How come you said you “can’t bring your left hand to your head” ? ….also #sidekicksdontwork lol #sidekickswork
@@metrolinamartialarts ah that sucks. I have no idea where you are on your martial arts journey, I only recently started watching you. But if that’s the case, check out Floyd Mayweather and other “Philly shell” lead arm down fighters. I know that may be counter intuitive for a JKD person but I’m sure there are things you can incorporate from that style/stance
This is the best type of sparring, light, controlled. Battering one another is counter productive. Hard sparring has its merits, it's lessons... But this is far better.
Both of those were great, although to be honest I think that Sensei Seth could kill you in less than a minute if he tried (which he won't! :D). He's just way too massive and surprisingly fast. Loved the 'focus', gave a whole different feeling of 'being there'. Oh and yeah, this is a comment for the #algo.
what i saw is very simple to repare. You have to much respect meaning you are fighting to much backwards instead of pressuring and trying to land the hit. Even though its a friendly sparring you still can land the punch. Plus you throwing points instead of combinations. A few times you go for a combination and then you see you are succesfull. So more pressuring or stay outside. and more combinations high and low instead of landing the shot and then nothing. Succes.
Okay, before watching, I think: 1) it'll be pretty even 2) you'll do better paired with icymike than senseiseth because size 3) senseiseth may be surprised at how well you manage the height/size diff 4) icymike will be a goodnatured smartass at you for the camera (and also water is wet) 5) you surprise both of them with at least one thing you can do reliably that they had discounted 6) you probably felt a bunch of points where you messed something up, on all the rewatches you had to do to put this together.
So I feel like I nailed my predictions 1, 2, 5 and 6. Prediction 4 doesn't count because you don't get points for predicting tautologies, ALTHOUGH to his credit the sassbending only came out when he was laughing with you 'cause you was both tired, and he made a great show for his boxing and muay thai influences. As for prediction 3, I feel y'all didn't go long enough on the film for me to form a solid opinion about y'alls managing height difference there. But from what I saw, I think you about met his expectations that you would try feeling out what you could do with him. So let's say I missed that prediction. You scored alright without anyone actually getting hurt, and both your partners felt you without being overpowered or overpowering you consistently. And y'all clearly had fun. So I think you all win at sparring, the game you were actually playing.
You look good! Hand trapping incorporation is cool. I’d really like to see you do it with some head movement And more foot work. For a martial art invented by Bruce Lee you’re making it look a little stiff. Great work though.
Dude, not bad, just train with Icy Mike and Sensi Seth, just do a lot of sparring with those 2, or go to a lot of Icy Mike's sparring classes, and your sparring skills will progress dramatically in no time. Honestly, the more quality sparring you get in, the better you can get.
Writing a comment before watching per your instructions. The first thing you will not do is leap back to get the distance in order to intercept. You will exchange like a kickboxing match. You will do good. It's a friendly match. But I will be looking for Interceptions, PIA, ABD, and HIA.
when you start sparring what is left from jkd or wt is basically nothing. There is perhaps something like 2-3 techniques in jkd/wt not used in modern mma that could be useful if trained properly.
Not bad, I think you did well with Icy Mike. It is hard to get into range with someone who knows what they are doing instead of someone who has just started. Minus the fact Sensei Seth is about 6’0”-6’1” ish where you are about 5’7” nearly 5’8”. Knowing that he has the reach advantage that uses that to his advantage. Bridging the gap between a taller sparring partner. Either then that is not bad in sparring while being tired and standing on your own. Better than most who claim that their martial arts are too “deadly to spar” once they spar they suck at it, not necessarily in what they are teaching is bad but out of date. Probably don’t even know their style's true history. The old Kung Fu masters had to test out their art somehow. In fact, in some cases, you are not considered a master if you can’t show whether or not you use your skills against another master in another or even in the same art. Bruce Lee wasn’t even considered a master to most martial artists in China Town. Because they knew his mother wasn’t full Chinese neither was Bruce. They didn’t want him to know all their secret because he wasn’t a full-blooded Chinese. Bruce Lee had to fight for his right to teach non-Chinese. People like Dan Inosanto, Taky Kimura, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Richard Bustillo. Not many people know that he had taught Sharon Tate, mainly because Charles Manson killed her.
So, how'd I do?
You seem to have been sparring in both of their preferred ranges, rather than your own. That's making things difficult for yourself. With that in mind, you did much better than you gave yourself credit for.
You and Mike are pretty well matched.

Looks like you guys have a lot of fun! I burst out laughing that Mike was disappointed you didn't kick him! Lol
Also just subscribed! Keep up the great work!
🙏🙏🙏
You did awesome!
Thanks!!
I think you did great job countering, always, no matter if your oponents attack landed or didnt
Only bad thing your hands are always down
"monk rings bell" we called "mountain punch" in Karate :)
Well done, sir!! 🥊
I think vertical punches are underutilised in combat sports in general, particularly in boxing gloves, they are very useful.
I am going to steal them from you now
Enjoy them
Great talks, Man.
Hey. Good job. I've subscribed. Curious how you were uncomfortable in southpaw as usually JKD emphasizes power side forward.
I'm left-handed
2 seconds in and that's a sidekick from @hard2hurt !
I been studying Bruce lee JKD for two years and all I can say to the instructor expand your horizon with your way
As he says there’s is no way of the way
Muy Thai instructor
He’s awesome !
I physically cannot touch my head with my left arm from most of the positions. It just locks. I make the most of it.
Very much so agreed
@Metrolina Martial Arts Good sparring too, against two very good martial artists 🙏
Seth Def coulda killed me
Did great as far as I can tell. What did Icey Mike think ? Looks like fun. Wish places sparred this chill around here.
Icy mike seems to be inspired by Jeff chan
I like that you implented JKD. Keep up the nice content.
what i saw is very simple to repare. Succes.
Wow, Icy Mike is sidekicking!
9:45 THE HAJIME NO IPPO FROG PUNCH
I hear a frog punch and a look away in the same sentence and knew we'd find ippo fans in the comments
We are here!
Sidekick from Mike in the thumbnail 👀
Okay, before watching, I think:
1) it'll be pretty even
2) you'll do better paired with icymike than senseiseth because size
3) senseiseth may be surprised at how well you manage the height/size diff
4) icymike will be a goodnatured smartass at you for the camera (and also water is wet)
5) you surprise both of them with at least one thing you can do reliably that they had discounted
6) you probably felt a bunch of points where you messed something up, on all the rewatches you had to do to put this together.
Honestly, the more quality sparring you get in, the better you can get.
mike's head movement is deceptively good
It really was
Writing a comment before watching per your instructions. The first thing you will not do is leap back to get the distance in order to intercept. You will exchange like a kickboxing match. You will do good. It's a friendly match. But I will be looking for Interceptions, PIA, ABD, and HIA.
Watched it. It's a great demonstration on how to spar. Sparring isn't a fight. You did exactly how I thought you would. It was a kickboxing match.
If you can avoid Mike's notorious oh-look-a-penny spinning jumpkick then you will do just fine!
when you start sparring what is left from jkd or wt is basically nothing. There is perhaps something like 2-3 techniques in jkd/wt not used in modern mma that could be useful if trained properly.
There is no saddest term than “professional TH-camr” hahahah
🤣🤣🤣
