The response to Beck's red card in 1998 is honestly one of England's darkest moments in our football history. I truly believe that. Yes I'm a Utd fan and yes Becks was a childhood hero but regardless of who you support, you can't hide from the fact as a nation, we let ourselves down terribly in that moment. To have the career he had, to go and do the things he did, he's an England legend and we can't ever allow what happened, to happen again.
He did arguably cost England that game (and therefore the tournament) with that totally unnecessary act of petulance. So, there's also that. Did some England fans (who weren't also Man United apologists) go too far in his condemnation? No doubt. However, Becks has never really been very apologetic about what he did to get that red card. Yes, he now admits that he regrets getting the card. But, he should have come forward straight away after England's exit from the tournament and publicly apologised for having being so reckless and he would probably have earned more forgiveness from a lot more of the public, much sooner. For the record, I wasn't one of those who condemned him afterwards. I just thought he was a bloody idiot for reacting the way he did in that moment. But I also thought he should have made more effort to genuinely apologise to the fans, and could understand the emotions of others, since he didn't take responsibility and apologise for his actions.

@@temporaryuseraccount0012 I think the intelligent element of England supporters realised that whilst what Beckham did was silly, the reaction to a flick of the foot by Simeone was cynical, and the red card from Nielsen was ridiculous. Not a single player from the current England team would get near the 2000s England team - mind-blowing how much they underachieved. To me, it says a lot about how important the balance of a side is.
@@adzthesaint Who are you dropping? It would be Beckham, Lampard, Gerrard or Rooney, so for me it would be no one, and that's as a huge Arsenal and Saka fan. Maybe play Saka out of position on the left, but that's it.
Sadly that midfield didn’t really work as well as it should have. Maybe having an unselfish ball winner who can play a tight pass - such as Rice - might have helped. We needed a strike partner for Rooney, why not Kane? And Saka would have been a great bench option, although I recall we weren’t blessed with pace in 2000’s. So he offers something different.
Cos losing to Portugal twice in a row was? Yeah Southgate isn't the right man, but he still took us to a final. On a personal level, the most iconic moment for me was the Beckham FK v Columbia. In that moment, 7 year old me decided wherever that man plays, I'll be watching be watching him week in and week out. Never been more excited than when my dad got me a (fake) Beckham England shirt a year or two later.
This is such a coincidence! I was a 12 year old myself, saw that match and that free kick live and the same year, I got a fake Beckham jersey as well. 😂. It was 5 Euros I think. And I have worshipped this man my whole life. I am 29 now, and people are arguing about Messi and Ronaldo etc, but for the kid in me, it's Beckham forever. I had giant posters plastered of him, all over my room.
One of UTD’s greatest imo Totally underrated in his impact, probably only Robbo & Eric in front of him in my lifetime ( 53 years ) always knew you were getting 100%
Been watching England since the mid 90s and in all that time I've not seen a player where it so obviously meant so much to play for England than Beckham.
Guess I should qualify my comment by saying I don't remember Pearce playing for England, I started watching in 97 when his international career was basically over.
All the interviews so far have been class! I was looking forward to this one but just seems like some sort of advertising for Qatar? I agree this could be the best setup for fans and players you could possibly see nearly every single game in the tournament but surely questions need to be asked about human rights in this country why here why not play it in Asia? Australia & New Zealand?
And isreal persecute people for being Arab. That's OK, or when Russia had the world Cup. Did everyone moan then. No they didn't so shut the hell up with your selective care.
Without doubt, the most underrated England player of a generation. The disrespect on his name is incredible. And when we look at the ‘abuse’ our players get after failure, it doesn’t even scratch the surface of what Beckham went through in 98.
You’re right but what do you mean by ‘abuse’? I hope you’re not referring to and downplaying the abuse that Rashford, Sancho and Saka suffered after the Italy loss

The two things I love about watching this.. is that after all these years, they both still call Fergie "The Boss".. it shows just how much that era of players respected their managers. And Becks saying that if Southgate gave him a call now, he'd still go out and play.. and we all know, he still has it!
I am an Indian kid who started following football around the time Beckham was at the last leg of his Man Utd career but I saw all his England matches and follwed his career till his last match for PSG. Even tried watching his MLS and AC Milan matches despite not having great access in those days. I had giant posters of him all over my room. People say his prime was his United days. Must be true. But even in the MLS and for Milan, he produced some world class goals and crosses and was just a great midefielder. I do wish he had stayed in Europe for longer for the sheer joy of watching him play. An absolute legend of the game. Best crosser and free kick taker of all time.
He has been paid £150m to be the ambassador for a World Cup which was won through proven corruption in a country with horrendous human rights record, and thousands of people died building the stadiums and has to be played in the middle of the season, but nobody seems to be mentioning it because it’s David Beckham

Despite the whole controvesy over Qatar and his endorsment etc. but it's so hard not to love Becks, one of the few players you could tell genuinely loved playing for England and was so proud to captain the side. I'm not a fan of any club side he played for but he's such an easy guy to like. Reminds me a bit of Harry Kane in the obvious pride he feels that he captained his country.
Did Neville ask beckham about the payments he received from Qatar to be an ambassador and promote the World Cup? The same Gary Neville who made a documentary about the stadiums being built and what the workers really went through. As bad as any Tory out there.
This is the only real comment on here, the rest is full of comments with pure deluded idolisation. Real questions or real topics never get spoken about.
Dunno how Sky Sports would have reacted to that. I doubt they would have liked it or broadcast it. Yes he went easier on his mate than he would have on a politician because this isn't Prime Minister's question time. If the English FA, UEFA, FIFA and the UK government aren't condemning Qatar either then it seems the footballing world is happy to ignore the obvious problems. Same as in Brazil and South Africa and Russia. Sad but true. What's even worse is that I know I'm still likely to watch an awful lot of the matches and in the moment forget all the suffering that is going around it.
David Beckham is actually himself here, and in any other interview he puts on this weird serious act. That's what happens when you are around people that remind you of your upcoming, you just act natural.
It’s all down to the interviewer. I interviewed him several times during his playing career and he was exactly like this. If people don’t think you’re trying to catch them out, their true personalities come through. Gary did a great job btw.
I know they're mates, but I think Gary should of asked him about the treatment of migrant workers etc. and how he squares all his other charity work with the pocketing of millions of pounds from the quataris to be their front man for the most controversial of world cups.
Why do you lot put in such dumb comments? You think your comment has any value? You think gary neville will ask his close friend about a global controversy for a video that will be viewed by millions of people?

He is a legend. But you’re right that he didn’t get far enough in competitions for England. None of that ‘golden generation’ did. What a waste of time they all were. Being with Man Utd, England and One of the most handsome guy to ever been seen in Football (May be in general as well) No wonder people were jealous and hated him and overlooked his Footballing quality. He was a top top player. Should have won the Ballon d'or.
Ballon d’or? Even coming second was an achievement for him. Rivaldo was immense the year he won. DB was a great player in the late 90’s/early 00’s but did he do enough to justify coming 2nd that year? Debatable.

Wow I think it’s rare for someone to get into football at a later age. Most are indoctrinated at a young age, like me as a man united fan 😂 I’m sure he could be a good coach if he wanted that but I don’t think he’s interested. He owns “Inter Miami” an MLS team.
I don’t think he’d ever get into coaching or management. Which is a shame because he was such a technically gifted player, and those skills could be passed on to others easily. He won’t do it because he’s his own brand now and is unlikely to drop it all. He owns multiple businesses, he is the face for multiple brands, he’s the ambassador for several corporations and charities to name a few things. He won’t have the time.

But I also thought he should have made more effort to genuinely apologise to the fans, and could understand the emotions of others, since he didn't take responsibility and apologise for his actions.
no, england let themselves down with how they treated those young players after the euros....unlike becks they got to the finals of the euros. banter was also included in the becks thing, but that racism shit was super ugly
I wonder which England players blanked him after the red card game? I don't know why they don't tell us after all it was 20 plus years ago.
@@temporaryuseraccount0012 😂😂😂😂😂 beckham got sent off.. he didn’t make those England players miss the penalties.. fucking pipe down. He never cost England the game. I think the intelligent element of England supporters realised that whilst what Beckham did was silly, the reaction to a flick of the foot by Simeone was cynical, and the red card from Nielsen was ridiculous.
To still think, a quarter of a century on, that a player should be expected to ‘publicly apologise’ for a split/second moment of minor silliness would be laughable if it weren’t so unpleasant.

He's on £15 million per year for the next 10 years, he's getting paid by Sky to reminisce with Neville, he's getting chaffeured, wined & dined & 5 star hotel stays for free everytime he is in Qatar, & judging by this interview he does not have to be within 500 metresof any of those 'troubling for optics' migrant foreign worker labourer types.... Oh he's comfortable alright....
As a scotsman, the following comment won't go down well locally. beckham was and still is a class act. so humble to this day. clutch player for england, dammit u should have been born in scotland.
What a nice piece. Makes me sad we’ll never see these legends play together again. These were the best times.
Great bit of sportswashing
£150 million to be the ambassador for the Qatar world cup. What do people think he is being paid for? It's definitely not to have a balanced view on the whole thing
What a redundant comment. Obviously we know he's going to biased. He's being criticised for taking the money and agreeing to be a mouthpiece for a horrible regime.
Yep, this is shameless whitewashing from Sky, Neville and Beckham. Even the shameless promotion of Qatar with scenic shots show show this is nothing less than an advert for a disgusting regime hosting a world cup that shouldn't be there. Beckham hardly needs the money, does he? His 'down-to-earth' persona has been completely smashed with this shameless money grab.
@@ghj6719-o2j It's not redundant if Gary failed to highlight this in the interview. Clearly Beckham has a conflict of interest which is worth pointing out in my opinion.

Not a single player from the current England team would get near the 2000s England team - mind-blowing how much they underachieved. To me, it says a lot about how important the balance of a side is.
Kane? Rice? Saka?

"Exciting" is the last word I would use to describe Southgate's England

Kind of funny since Beckham was the Southgate's captain in 2002 WC
