-- note from future me: I think, in some ways, I was a little naïve when I made this video, about differences in culture. I just wanted to make a video about things that I had been surprised about, but I think in many cases, I did not understand the entire picture. Please grant me grace.

It's crazy that american people think everybody in France is smoking... I'm french and i hate smoke too... Yes its sometimes easier to meet people when you smoke... You just have to go out , where all smokers are and ask for a fire, and bingo, you can begin a talk... But, personnaly i never smoked and i never felt like isolated...
Hmmm but you're right a lot of people smoke... That's sad and annoying... However, thanks to the policy against tobaco, prices are growing up, and more and more persons are quiting... for the best...
AlX6S Ahah , for "la bise" , you're absolutely right ^^... I would not even think that it could cause a trouble ^^... That's a bit strange if im wondering a bit ... lol Yes... When we're like 10-13 years, there is a period of time where we're a bit awckward and unconfortable with it... But you know it's not rude to do " la bise" to only your friends and do a general "hello" with your hand... Some people only check hands ... But you're right between people of the same age , it's better to do "the bise"...

About smiling.. You're right , and its not because of the city where you're living... In France, it's pretty rare that people smile to a unknown person when they speak with it... Mostly in a shop! In the "real life", particularly if you're foreigner, people will answser you with a great smile in general... We like american, english speakers... But its better if the person you speak with know the tanguage ^^

+AlX6S Le cliché est quand-même basé sur un fait, les français sont les plus gros fumeurs d'Europe, assez loin devant les deuxièmes. Tu as un peu d'une personne sur trois qui fume en France, ce qui est énorme ! Et étant donné qu'ils n'ont plus le droit de fumer à l'intérieur (et merci pour ça), quand tu marches dans la rue, et bien évidemment, tu as cette impression que tout le monde fume. En tout cas, trop de monde, ça c'est un fait.

Essayez plutôt d'inverser le problème. Vous arrivez à la caisse, et la caissière met les affaires dans les sacs. Je suis prête à parier que beaucoup (moi y compris) penseraient "Hein?! pourquoi elle fait ça ? Merci, c'est gentil mais je sais ranger un sac de courses", en d'autres termes vous seriez choqué. Petit choc, ça n'a blessé personne, mais choc quand même.

Aux US ce qui m'a le plus choqué c'est que les articles sont mis dans pleins de sacs en plastique!! Genre 3 articles max par sac! A la fin tu te retrouves avec 15 sacs!! Ç'est pas très ecolo je trouves
Les actus : il fallait en profiter pour demander pourquoi dans les séries/films US ont voit toujours de beaux sacs en papier marron, comme nous pour les fruits ;-)
Ben sinon, pour la petite etudiante, j'espère qu'on l'a pas trop choquée avec nos bises ! Dans certains coins, c'est 3 ou 4 ! Et la bise allemande claque bien plus fort que la notre, nous, limite, on effleure les joues

+Alessio Cipri Dans tout les supermarchés que je connais il faut ranger ses achats, hein. Genre Carrefour, Auchan, Franprix, Monoprix, Cora et tout... Y'a juste les magasins de vêtements, de nourriture (où ils te servent) ou des trucs qui sont pas français comme Hema où ils rangent tes affaires dans des sacs qu'ils fournissent. Du moins c'est comme ça en Ile-de-France, ça peut être différent suivant où t'habites.

Ce que je n'aime pas trop avec les américains, c'est qu'en plus de n'avoir aucune culture générale sur les autres pays les entourant, ils sont choqués d'un rien. Comment tu peux être stressée d'aller faire les courses ? Je suis allée à Londres récemment, bhein tu t'adaptes à la culture et tu fais pas ta sainte nitouche à chaque coin de rue...

Ce que je dis est parfaitement fondé et je ne suis pas la seule à le pense, c'est pas "typiquement" français. Je pars du principe que lorsque tu pars dans un pays en échange, tu t'adaptes et tu fais pas ton choqué devant tout ce que tu vois de différent, c'est très malpoli la façon dont elle a de dire genre "c'est pas normal ce qu'ils font"

Elle fait une putin de video difference between son pays et la france, pays où elle a etudié, bordel il y a rien de mal j'aurais fait la meme a sa place. Et le mot choqué est plus a prendre en terme de culture shock. Bref ça sert a rien de parler avc toi, je supporte plus les gens comme toi ... Les français sont loin d'être détesté par le monde entier, si tu sortais de chez toi et que t'allais visiter le monde tu le saurais. Tu prends le plus grand Leclerc que tu as vu dans ta vie, tu peux te dire que c'est environ 1/8 d'un vrai supermarché au US x)

Vous trouvez toujours quelque chose à redire, mais je pense que vous ne voyagez pas énormément pour comprendre que oui en effet il ne suffit pas de grand chose pour choquer lorsqu'on voyage dans un pays sur un autre continent. I'm french, so there is my opinions about the various subjets you talked about :
- Smoking : I thought it was a social thing in America too ? oo I'm surprised.
- La bise : Don't worry, there are also french people who are inconfortable with the bise ! I only do the bise with people I really like and a little bit with friends of a friend, otherwise, I shake hand. It's surprising for a girl, because it's mostly a "man" thing but I don't care. I don't like doing the bise to people I don't really know so...
When you talked about the supermarket and french not smiling... Ok I'm assume you are in Paris right ? ;b Parisians don't smile, for sure, but in the tiny city, or in the village, people smile too. Ok, maybe not as much as the american who always looks like really cheerful, but still ;)
About the supermarket : I hate that moment when you have to bring your basket back, it's really uncomfortable in little supermarket, but well... There is no other choice right ?

+Resosphere it's true. (Parisians are bitches but she was in Aix) I need to say that not everyone goes to monoprix for groceries shopping, it's small and expensive as said in your video. BIG supermarkets are outside the centre town so it isnt easy without a car :) Glad you liked France tho ! Experienced the culture shock in the USA as well ;)

+Resosphere Kisses when greeting is quite usual across the world, although it depends on where you are how many kisses you need to do. I'm from the Netherlands and we do three kisses when we greet someone. However, in my experience the most kisses trumps the lesser kisses. Like, every time I go to Paris I always do three kisses even though I believe they normally do two in Paris and that region but I also met someone from Corsica and she did five kisses so everyone just went along with that. I think it is because it's easier to just go alon with another kiss than to be awkward and go "NOPE!" and refuse another kiss.

Ah ah yeah totally ! In France, we usually do 2 kiss but there is part of France where you do only 1, or 3, and even 4 ! I can't tell wich region, but I've meet people doing thoses many times. It's always a little awkward but funny moment like "Oh 3 ? Ok" and we kiss X3
Ha ha it must be so awkward to do the "bise" for non-French people! I can realize that now. But you don't want to do it "everytime", for example if you are meeting someone for a job interview, and even when you are hired, you should wait a few days before doing it with your co-workers, an maybe NEVER with your boss. But yeah, when meeting friends of your friends or things like that, it's the bise.
***** Also we do not do the bise to people we don't know unless they are accompanied by someone you know (not in a formal situation though). In that case you only say "bonjour" or make an handshake. Concerning the bise from men to men it is quite rare and you only do that to close friends, but that is not systematic, it depends on the person.
Indeed you can do a handshake and maybe someone will say: "Oh, we can do the bise!" so you know this person is OK with that. But you must avoid it if you are not sure, and you really want to do a handshake if you are not sure, because it can be very poorly looked upon if you attempt doing a bise to someone you shouldn't (as I said your boss, some of your co-workers, your doctor, your boyfriend's parents depending on how strict they are with the "not the bise the first times" thing...).
A handshake instead of bise is never a mistake, maybe someone will say "oh you don't do the bise?" then you just say "oh sorry I wasn't sure I could", and that's OK. But a bise instead of a handshake can be considered impolite (I mean like if you said "Hi bro!" to your teacher).
Plus if you are sick, you must not do the bise and even not a handshake, just say "hi, sorry I'm sick!" and do a sign.
And one more thing... Sometimes even a handshake is too much. I suppose it's the same in the US, but you want to wait for the other person to give you them hand so you know they're OK. Some bosses don't want to shake hands, and you don't want to give a handshake when you go to a doctor, depending on the doctor (once again wait for them to give you a clue).
Yup he's right, I didn't mention that but man-to-man bise is only with family or very close friends (I do it with only one friend guy that I know for twenty years, and it's still a bit strange to me). Wait, when we are drunk, we do it too.

Super vidéo, au passage je suis française et je ne fume pas ! et je ne fumerais jamais car je ne supporte pas la fumée de cigarette ^^. C'est très étrange de regarder ta vision de ce que tu as pu voir en France, à force on ne s'en rend pas compte mais c'était cool de voir les différences entre la France et les Etats-Unis.

+Mary P. En fait, si la loi avait été respectée avant, on n'aurait pas eu besoin de faire chier les fumeurs (dont je fais partie) en interdisant la clope. On aurait obligé les établissements à respecter la loi et à autoriser de fumer uniquement dans les salles fumeurs, qui devaient selon la loi être fermées, et ventilées. C'était ça, qui était choquant. Pas le fait de pouvoir fumer.
***** Oui clairement :( Mais je me souviens d'un restaurant où on allait avec la famille quand j'étais petite. Une seule pièce. Et pourtant, coin fumeur obligatoire. Les restaurateurs avaient mis un filet de pècheur pour faire une démarcation, faute de mieux... Tout le monde n'avait pas la possibilité de le faire. Enfin après c'est un détail ça, un cas particulier, parce que je suis d'accord avec toi :)

Je suis française et je me sens un peu insultée par la vidéo. En fait, c'est pas que je me sente insultée, c'est juste que cette fille est un peu une chochotte quand même. Elle parle de "choc des cultures" pour un contact entre joues et parce qu'elle doit mettre elle même les produits qu'elle achète dans un sac plastique PAYANT en plus ?! ouais mais pour toi c'est une habitude et quelque chose de banal mais pas pour elle, eux ont un espace privé qu'on approche pas si facilement et oui pour les sacs c'est vrai moi je viens d'un autre pays que la France et oui les sacs sont " bien suuur " gratuits ça tombe sous le sens, et c'est le mec qui te fais payer qui s'occupe de ranger les courses dans les sacs

People that I met where so happy to see me (I joined my boyfriend who already knew these people) that hug me a lot and I never knew how to react in front of this
The same thing for supermarkets I was so impressed it's so huge and when I was looking for something to eat it was really difficult
American and Canadian people are really welcoming and smiling I have great souvenirs from my vacations

Don't worry, it's not only you, I'm french, and, even though I'm used to it, I always find it super unconfortable when someone I don't know come at me and me fait la bise introducing at the same time...it's always super awkard but, well, it's a thing so...
La bise est aussi quelque chose que nous faisons ici, au Québec (Canada). Nous n'avons pas seulement la même langue que nos cousins français, mais aussi les mêmes habitudes haha ;)
ok so i'm french and i can tell you about some issues you told in your video!
first, generally, boys do the bise to girls but shake hands with other boys, but girls are doing the bise with both girls and boys, but when the girl adresses to a quite important person, the girl shake hands with boy!
then, monoprix is the most expensive supermarket because usually situated in the middle of the city, if you can find a carrefour, leclerc, u express/super u, go for it! the food is lower priced :)
quand tu fait la bise, il faut TOUJOURS faire le petit son, sinon, c'est frustrant
most french supermarkets are ridiculously large, there are supermarché (smaller) and hypermarché (massive). I guess you've been going to a smaller in town shop,where most french people will go to Auchan/ Carrefour etc. for their main shop, they are usually at the edge of town
Vous êtes en train de débattre des supermarché français et de la bise ? Et fumé n'est pas un moyen pour faire des rencontres mais allumé ou parler des cigarettes oui comme vous avec les fast-food !

Même si on voit bien que n'es pas méchante (bien sûr), mais aller dans un pays ne suffit pas à être quelqu'un d'ouvert aux autres cultures, tu aurais dû aller en France en te disant: "ça marche on fait comme ça ici" plutôt que: "chez moi c'est pas comme ça, chez moi c'est pas comme ça...". Enfin si c'est le cas tu l'as pas montré du tout dans cette vidéo.

Je suis d'accord avec le commentaire précédent et j'ajouterais que les plus grands chocs culturel se trouvent dans les détails.
ex: En Corée la quasi totalité des gens n'ont pas d'odeur corporelle lorsqu'elles transpirent, par conséquent il sera extrêmement compliqué de trouver un déodorant efficace.
Toujours en Corée, le geste pour dire à quelqu'un de venir (en France, la main vers le haut) est une insulte.
Ce sont des détails, certes, mais auxquels il n'est pas forcément facile de s'adapter.
De plus, parler d'expérience sans recul est incorrecte puisqu'elle le dit elle-même, elle s'adapte, elle est moins gênée, elle voit le charme dans ces habitudes, chose qu'il est impossible de faire sans recul

Not every french people "font la bise", we usually do it with people we know, not at work, and sometimes with people we don't know if they are friends of someone who introduces yourself.
je suis française et c'est pareil pour moi, je déteste les gens qui fument. à mon arrêt de bus (en rentrant des cours) il y a pleins de gens qui fument, c'est insupportable!

par contre, tu ne fais pas la bise à tout le monde: professeurs (école), patron (travail professionnel) ...

Je ne fais la bise qu'à ma famille et à mes amis, et les personnes que je ne connais pas, je dis bonjour ou serre la main plutôt.
Ne te sens pas obligée de le faire à chaque fois, tu peux aussi bien faire la bises à tes connaissances et simplement dire bonjour en souriant à quelqu'un que tu connais pas assez, si on te tend la main, tu sais quoi faire.
On est assez ouvert en France pour tout ça et en général les gens demandent pas mieux car ils savent pas non plus comment faire en face x)
Pour ce qui est du sourire, on est d'accord, je suis pareille. ça m'est arrivée que certaines personnes pensent que je me moque d'eux alors que pas du tout... x)

C'est des choses qu'on fait par habitude et on ne se rend pas compte à quel point ça peut être étrange vu de l’extérieur (le pire ça doit être pour la "bise", c'est effectivement assez bizarre quand on y réfléchit). About the supermarkets, there are small because they probably are in a town... If you go outside of the city, we have supermarkets which are as big as yours.

Re the smiling stuff Aix can be so stuck up sometimes and it's so refreshing to meet people who are a little more relaxed. I still smile with everyone most of which probably think I'm creepy but I find at the end they give a confused smile back which I hope lightens up their day. We moved to Marseille and it's a lot less tense.
I spent my childhood in France ( my dad built a house in La Loire Valley) even as a 6 year old, I felt like France was a whole new world to England. and even nearly 10 years later, I miss being there, (I moved back in my early teens), I still speak it fluently and since then have learnt other languages, but France has this homely feeling to me. 'faire la bise' is the funniest thing ever! even now I still do it to my English friends and they still find it hilarious, everything I do now has a French touch ( though I don't smoke! couldn't pick it up). I still go back on day trips a lot and the supermarkets always astonish me, even now. But after all this time I still love going back because the feeling you get while being in France (or Belgium or the Netherlands) is indescribable but in a good way. :) :)

Being french, I found this video to be very cute !! :) It's funny but I didn't recognize myself in your stereotypes (even though I do agree with them), I don't smoke, and I smile ALL THE TIME, like, to EVERYONE. I didn't realize how the bise could be unconfortable for you, and i undertand it now ! That's right, we don't smile as americans, but still we smile, and you're right : we smile we people we know, with family ! In the street, or public transports, you're not supposed to smile "for no reason", and we also avoid eye contact... I know it can sounds weird !
About monoprix and the little bag, you have to know that Monoprix is a supermarket for student, or lonely people, in "big" cities. But in Carrefour, or Auchan (others supermakets) we do use a lot carts because that's where families go shopping, where they fill up the cart. (And yes, monoprix is a little more exepensive)
Also, if I'll study in the USA for a year, maybe as you said, it will be hard for me to avoid meal time : we are use to get 1 or two hour break to eat, relax, and interac with friend. This is a precious time to talk with people, all the big decisions are made at dinner : I think it will be hard for me to take less time, and eat faster, because my stomach won't appreciate it haha !

In France we don’t always do the "bise". For example, two men just shake hands, unless they’re family. So it’s mostly between a man and a woman or two women.
And I sure as hell won’t do it if there’s 20 people in a room, just wave and say "Hi", people will understand you don’t want to loose 10 minutes to greet every person individually.
Hey, I'm french! I hope you enjoy your life in France. Don't worry about the Bise, somme french people don't touch the cheek or don't make noise. it's depnding of people so don't need to stress about it. And for the supermarket i think it just monoprix because other supermarket like Carrefour, Leclrec, intermarché, you have shopping trollet and things like that and you can take all the time you need after the cashier had passed all your things. Just be how you are and it will be ok. Instead of the prejudice french people are open minded and lot of teenager and young adult love american people because of the american dream! And for the smile, it's just in big city. I come from a little town in the countryside and we always smile and say "hello" to every people we meet known or unknown people. So I wish you can read me despite all my mistake. Enjoy :)
Tbh when I went to France I've also noticed that the majority smoked, and that they don't smile too much, in fact, they even glared at us. I've been to alot of countries for vacation and France is the only country where I learned what "racism" was like.

Ps: les Monoprix sont l'un des magasins les plus petits et les plus chère de France, les "vrais" supermarché sont plutôt "Carrefour" et "Auchan".

Hi! I am french and I live in slovenia for 10 months. I can say that yes, I figured out that in France we smoke a lot, it's true (I don't smoke and I don't like this and here I can breathe!). About the supermarket, you have to pack everything by yourself in the bags as well. Same in Germany.. In France some shops they do it (Carrefour) but it depends on the cashier and the configuration of the supermarket but yes, it's not so frequent. Yes, we make 'la bise' in France a lot. Not in Slovenia, and I have to admit that I appreciate it. Though, we can make hugs, but its not something you have to do each time. Probably like in US or other countries (?).
I feel you on the bagging thing. I am French and I HATE it when the cashier just doesn't care if you are struggling with your stuff. I hate shopping just for that reason. I think one of these days I'll tell one of those cashier HEY STOP IT NOW !
I am a french dude who lived in UK for a while and to be honest it is actually kinda fun to get the other side of the "culture shock" :) I had equivalent experience in England so in a way i really get where your coming from! Anyways good luck :P

Les étudiants étrangers restent cantonnés en ville et ne vont pas trop dans les gros centres en dehors des villes.

Hey! Really great video! I'm French and I live in Vancouver, Canada, now! So I can totally understand everything you're experiencing because I have Culture shock as well but in the opposite of you. But yeah it's so true about the smiling. Generally I feel like people in France look less happy than people here in Canada. Also going to the supermarket here is so enjoyable. The cashier is always saying hello with a smile and asking how was your day. That never happened to me in France. And having them pack your groceries is very helpful :) For the bise I kinda miss that. Hug makes me feel a bit uncomfortable. Because I don't know how I should hug. For me hugging is something "special" like you wanna do only to people you really care for and have affection for. But yeah I guess it's the same feeling for you and the bise. What gets common and what we're used to becomes the normality.

As a french, I love those kind of videos where american people talk about France. It's funny to see my every day life in the eyes of someone who is not use to it. Especially when it come from someone who live in USA. because in France we are so jealous of american people because in movies and TV show we can see that life is kind of "better" there and the main idea coming from united stats is that their country is the best and every one should live there... And they come in France and I could watch some videos where they talk about what they love and hate in France and about french people. It makes me smile to learn that. It's funny to rediscover our own culture through the eyes of those who don't know those things.

Pretty nice video ! I'm french and I can tell you that I went on exchange in Canada (not the same as america but almost) and I had the most akward situation greeting the students at school for the first time because I had no idea what to do XD
And also I find french people really don't smile enough... I've always been a smiley person, always smiling so I think it's sad that french people don't smile back at me when I smile to them :(

1. Yes I feel in France A LOT of people smoke.
2. Well where I come from, it's just one kiss on the cheek so didn't really affect me... Besides the fact that in my city it's 3 kisses.
3. There are larger supermarkets, like Géant Casino, Auchamps, etc. Monoprix is one of the least cheap ones! And yes I was also very stressed at the beginning trying to pack all my things before having to pay but you get used to it.
4. It depends on the city. In Paris I feel people are very serious all the time, but in my city, in the South, people do smile and are very nice actually.

Coucou :) c'est vrai que la plupart de tes remarques sont vraies mais pour les supermarchés, nous avons quelque chose qui ressemble beaucoup plus aux supermarchés qu'il y a aux Etats-Unis. Ce sont les supermarchés des centres commerciaux qu'il y a en banlieue, je ne sais pas si tu y es déjà allée ... Tu fais tes courses en ville je pense, c'est pour cela que c'est plus petit et que tu ne peut pas acheter grand chose. Les centres commerciaux des banlieues restent effectivement plus petits que dans ton pays je pense, mais dans ceux-ci tu peux acheter beaucoup plus de choses et acheter des choses plus spécifiques comme du mobilier que tu ne trouverai pas en supermarché en ville. Il y a aussi de vrais chariots (Caddie) dans ceux-ci et non des petits paniers gênants que tu dois replacer en début de caisse. Je n'habite pas en ville donc je vais souvent dans les centres commerciaux. Donc les supermarchés en France ne sont pas si différents qu'aux Etats-Unis, c'est juste que ceux où tu vas faire tes courses sont des sortes de boutiques/supermarché, beaucoup plus petits. Pour l'histoire de la bise, cela ne m'a jamais traversé l'esprit que cela pourrait être quelque chose de gênant pour quelqu’un qui ne vient pas de France, c'est quelque chose de vraiment courant chez nous ! :) Pourtant je ne la fait pas tout le temps non plus, par exemple comme tu as dit, si il y a une pièce remplie de personnes, je vais seulement faire un signe de main et dire bonjour, je ne vais pas faire la bise à tout le monde ... Je ne la fait pas non plus à des personnes que je ne connais pas. Sinon j'ai beaucoup aimé ta vidéo, ça m'a permis de comprendre un peu mieux comment se sentent les étrangers en France comme cela je pourrai être plus à même de mieux réagir à certains de vos comportements :D Je te souhaite une belle expérience en France et que les gens vont être plus souriants avec toi !
Aix-en-provence is like "the rich cities" in south France, in this part. My friend lived there and disliked it because of this aspect "bourgeois". She told me "it's full of old people who look at you like you were going to steal from them". Well, there are others aspects of this city. I went there one winter from paris and the sun, the fountains everywhere, the light in the street.... that was so beautiful.
I love people who speak english :3 This is interesting to listen to people who came in France and see what they thinking about their new environment
That is so true what you said on this smoking habit we have. I know that I never smoke when I'm alone, but when I'm in a social area I do because my friends, or people which I can socialize with do. And most of people are like me I guess. That is really a way to socialize, meet people and communicate.
Also I can understand that tourists are unconfortable with it, it's true that it doesn't smell well, but at the end you get used to it :)

Hello, I'm not really suprised about what you've said, especially for smokers, because when I started to study in high school, the rumor was that a big grey smoke will welcome me in. It was true it's because you can't smoke in a public area (that's a law), so all the people who smoke are in front of the building. It doesn't mean that all french people smoke (I don't). For Monoprix, yes it has the reputation to be expensive and I saw that you were in Aix en Provence, it's a rich town too. When you talk about the supermarket, you are not alone to feel that, you really have to be very fast to pack your things. Otherwise you are right we, french people, absolutely need to smile more.
Just my point of view as a french guy, there's not that many smokers in France. They are only very visible because they block the entrance of biulding (it's forbidden to smoke inside). Also, Monoprix is not a supermarket. Supermarkets such as Auchan and Carrefour are outside cities, and are bogger. Yes, indeed, the bise is for nearly everone (not your boss, tough). And, what's weird about it is that it depends the aera in France. To some place, you do 2 bises (one left, one right), in others place it is 3 (left,right,left), in others 4 (left,right,left,right). And, the weardest, in some it's in the opposite orders: right,left, or right,left,right, or right,left,right,left... So, when two french people from two different aeras of France do the bise, they may sometime accidentally kiss each others. Some people smile when they are talking, but it is rare, indeed. Hi, I'm french and I can assure you do not have to "faire la bise" to everyone lol. It is just for your friends, family and sometimes to people you do not know it is true but these people are at least known by your friends or any other persons whom you have already gived a kiss / "fait la bise". For exemple, you never have to "faire la bise" to your boss, it could be very impolite and even if he is from your family or a friend, the handshake is better at work because he is your boss before to be your friend (or parent) in this particular case. And friends do not kiss each other every time they meet, especially if it is each day and it depends of the context too, for exemple, if there is too much people, to say "hi" is more usual but you are still free to give a kiss to everyone it is ever nice and kind and nobody will stop you or will blame you for it, at least they will find it funny ;)

And the teenagers, of course, the boys, they shake hands. And girls "font la bise" ! I was laughting all the video, because ... I don't know. it's funny to hear about the part "you have to pack your things yourself in the supermarket". I'm french and I was an abroad student in quebec (canada) and I hated it. I was like "please let me pack my own things I can do it myself". I felt very uncomfortable of just watching the cashier or someone else do something I'm used to do myself. I felt I was "served" too much by those people.
