      George if you really want to start a movement to help transform society you'll need to connect the hearts and minds (seek, find & grow their potential) which I call the Human Spirit. Currently consumer consumption economy feeds on Human Nature instead of the Human Spirit. Human Nature breeds meaning in materialism & leading to emptiness. We are in the times of highest standard of living yet mental health issues are at an all time high. Regarding those asking you for advice, you don’t need to when, you can teach them how to think for themselves to come up with their own solutions.
      The good long time solution is assembling people not based on ideology, but based on intellectually honest people who are openminded enough to listen & understand thought process outside their bubble. Intellectually honest thought leaders having meaningful discourse to find pragmatic solutions isn’t happening anywhere. I believe the public which is losing trust in institutions is starving for this. Joe Rogan & Lex Friedman partially do this but don’t have actual discourse with competing ideas. We are missing meaningful dialogue in a time things seems to be getting more chaotic & unstable. This would draw people with the best ideas & develop into something unique & impactful. Of course you will have to ignore the not so bright NPCs who just want to spew their propaganist talking points.
      e/acc has to be built on a foundation that hits the hearts & minds of decent people who want to be part of fixing society but don’t see their place in it. I believe if it’s focus is on the Human Spirt instead of materialism feeding into Human Nature it will become a movement that feeds into itself. Their is plenty more to this like mapping reality with media to make it more tranparent for all. Or coming up with hypothetical ideals & working backwards to achieve them. If done right you could have a platform just as big as Lex Friedman & working with the best minds to come up with real world solutions benefitting the majority.

    Gwern (which I know George reads) has an article called "Improvements since the 1990s" where he makes a point that people tend to focus too much on scientific or technological breakthrough (which ordinary people usually don't benefit much from, at least in short term) and not too much on small, incremental improvements

    • @nochiel
      @nochiel 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The problem with the kind of incremental changes Gwern describes is that incremental change "adds up" but is probably asymptotic with a ceiling and doesn't get us the step change in civilization that we really want and need.
      After all, what did Gwern use the extra space on his desk for? He says it's now occupied by his cats.
      As for what ordinary people would benefit from in the immediate to short term? An order of magnitude decrease in energy costs; a cure for cancer; cheap desalination, and so on.

    George is falling into the same mindset as the climate radicalists. He is essentialy envoking a non-existent collapse. I do appreciate the ideas, and a vision to reach new heights. Fear however is a constant, we shouln't try to rationalize it too much.

    • @nochiel
      @nochiel 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The analogy with climate radicalism isn't apt.
      We know, historically, that great civilizations eventually decline.
      George's (and Jonathan Blow's) questions have been something like: If you were in the Roman Empire (or Mesopotamia?), how would you detect that it was in decline?
      Having detected the decline, how would you correctly diagnose it and what would you be able to do about it?

    • @B0tch0
      @B0tch0 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If we exclude climate radicalists and only include respectable scientists with a phd. How would it look on a chart? Empirical evidence and data analysis should probably drive the conversation over gut feeling? Fear is a non quantifiable, abstract metric.

      @@B0tch0The fact you think having a PhD, of any kind, is the pinnacle of intellectual achievement, and earnestly posted your belief in attempt to persuade others on a George Hotz video is hilarious.
      I got a paper you should read, it’s written by a respectable, PhD holding, senior researcher at Stanford’s SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. Surely his titles and credentials satisfy the requirements you laid out. Having decades of experience in cutting edge experimental physics and chemistry research. He should have a decent enough grasp on the fundamental mathematic principles, and scientific collection methods, underpinning the development of a highly accurate and precise model of a complex system occurring within reality.

      Turn on the red squiggles! It's spelled "evoking" not "envoking". Evoking something implies that something didn't exist before, hence no need to tack on "non-existent". It would be pointless nitpicking to point out those errors, but in the context of telling someone they're wrong without an explanation, it makes you look like a functioning illiterate.

    I live in an African country and US culture affects so much my country, it's just crazy. From the tech built in the US being copied by entrepreneurs here or just plainly adopted, to political ideologies like LGBTQ+ going viral, to Hollywood movies being consumed and youth copying the culture. People just copy US culture, after a few years it gets ingrained in society. I won't assume it's the same in other countries but I would take a huge bet that it is the same. The ideas of American-level freedom are just so attractive. Also, American political establishment, especially on the centre, believes in promoting liberal hegemony across the globe, please read/watch John Mearsheimer on this.

      Demographics are probably relevant in this: the educated millennial set are almost entirely influenced by the luxury beliefs of those who were educated abroad.
      The educated Gen-X set were mostly influenced by the beacon of comparative freedom and prosperity that the US represented and they pursued that by getting scholarships.
      Those Africa Gen-X'ers who studied the humanities instead of engineering however, are mostly woke a f, and when they returned they inculcated educated millennials with those beliefs.
      Everyone else finds current American values sort of decadent and weird? (Witness, for instance, the endless go-nowhere debates at the African Union and ancillary fora about basic issues of human rights.)
      But the fundamental irony of Africa now is probably that, while the cultural values of the young are, as you say, some weird pastiche of US-centric; all the modern and fantastic new infrastructure is Chinese.

    • @mimi21746
      @mimi21746 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@nochiel wow, you really understand it all. It's all what you say. Most Africans who have studied in the US, and have studied the humanities, are really pushing anti-colonialism, anti-racism ideas, and the most woke material out there you can find both in the US and in their countries, I personally am not a fan as I just think we just need to work harder, avoid victim culture and just build stuff, but if I say that I get shout at. I said it to one lady who we studied together High School in my country, but she went to study humanities in the US. Those who did engineering rarely even come back to start it all 😂😂, they get well-paying jobs in the US Big Tech, or, if they do come back just do finance start-ups, just look at the founders of Africa's highest valued startups. But, you are really on-point on this. Most infrastructure is also Chinese, not all though, you will find bits of French and Japanese built infrastructure in African countries as well. Additionally, something interesting is that still the US is the biggest investor of the African Development Bank, then followed by the Japanese, so there is still great American influence in Africa that you won't get in the media and only on your personal research online.

That's totally false as ever increasing globalization and international trade and growing divides between certain societal ideologies. If you're country has a lot of trade with the US then you should definitely take an interest in its domestic situation. As an Australian, a middle power western country with a brother like alliance with the US but also extremely strong economic ties to China. Understanding the geo-politics can give you a great insight into how Australia's economy will perform in the coming years.

    I don't really follow why George feels that energy per capita charts to be indicative of bad/good things happening. It's such a general metric that one really shouldn't be drawing such specific conclusions, in my opinion.
    Energy use per capita has increased worldwide nearly every year, according to the World Bank. The US chart takes the shape of a logistic curve--which sounds very reasonable given American quality of life.
    Part of joining the middle class is maxing out your energy usage: you drive whenever you want, where ever you want. You have a temperature controlled space that's exactly the temperature you want year-round. You have screens on nearly all waking hours. You have every home appliance, and in some cases you have multiples--again, whatever you want. I've been in many homes that had two refrigerators (kitchen and garage). And that's where the asymptote is: once people are able to do everything they want, they have no reason to use any extra energy. Hence the curve being logistical rather than exponential.

    Wouldn't the increase in efficiency of technology affect total energy output after a certain point where a reversal to downtrend would indicate progress within both the space of energy production as well as efficiency of energy dependent technologies? Meaning to say that a downtrend relative to that arbitrary curve is not indicative of stagnation but actually growth in different types of ways.

    Wait what's the argument for basing civilizational decline based on energy usage? Illumination is 5x cheaper than those incandescent lights you're comparing energy usage against. So are computing, fridges, cookers, ... virtually anything from daily life consumes much less electricity than they used to before. Mining bitcoin in China for exorbitant amounts of energy is hardly an indicator of scientific development.

    The thing to be aware of with wokeness is that it exists on both sides of the political spectrum, increasing as you move more and more towards one side. The views on the end of the spectrum may be different, but they have the same root cause: prevalence of ideology over reason and truth. People like George still think of it as a line, where to oppose wokeness, you have to move in the opposite direction - but all you are doing is moving around the bend to the other side of the horseshoe. People like Tucker Carlson are still very much "woke".

Yeah, you pay like a dollar in taxes to the cause, but it doesn't matter. On the other hand, in combination with other events, it can lead to WW3, which is going to affect you. The US government policy is going to have huge impact on the direction in which that situation goes. It seems to me that there are a lot of issues like that, that are going to have impact in the future, but easily controllable/reversible now. What do you think about this?

    The root cause of the issues you described was going off the gold standard. The 2023 SVB bailout proved this to me personally ( our startup was saved ). If you play a game where you can't actually get wiped out, it changes incentives radically and people aren't as serious or careful. It breeds a culture of complacency. I'm optimistic we can return to the gold standard with BTC as anyone can verify the peg themselves, which was impossible with physical gold.

    Yes - China went from a country where the vast majority of people lived in rural areas with subsistent living - moving into cities [1]. Surprise the energy usage increase? Huh? Why is that surprising? It certainly was not because China somehow became a bastion of meritocracy in 2000 and shunned wokeness. There may actually be a flattening of their own energy usage starting in 2021 or so.
    The timelines you use seem to coincide with the beginning of industrial revolution. Science benefitted immensely. Since that time the cost of furthering our knowledge has increased with each discovery. Things like Super Colliders cost billions of dollars. The money the Gov't pays Musk to develop space ships is enormous. Advancement cost more than it once did. The low hanging fruit has been picked.
    Finally I may even agree that ideology has replaced a certain amount of reason but Mr Thiel is no stranger to pushing controversial ideologies of his own. So colleges haven't produced as much because of creeping wokeness from the 70's. Well computers have been increasingly used starting the 70's. Maybe computer use is causing our productivity to flatten out? People getting dumber amusing themselves to death with games. I think there are any number of variables one could pick that happen to coincide.

    Eric Weinstein also talks about this in Joe Rogan's podcast, particularly in the context of physics. He highlights that no significant advancements that have occurred since 1970, while expressing frustration that many people today are primarily focused on trivial matters.

      Yo, you will be better off using LLMs to get perspective on physics advancements since 1970 than Eric Weinstein. Condensed matter physics comes to mind and all the chip manufacturing that was enabled by it. Oh yeah, but but it's not theoretical physics... sorry, you can't invent General Relativity twice. Weinstein has all incentive to try to convince as many people as possible that nothing has happened in science and that people like him should be sponsored. Btw, by all accounts his Geometric Unity Theory is bogus by all accounts. He is basically Craig Wright of theoretical science, except probably poorer. Nowadays, after Peter Thiel sponsorship money has dried up, he talks all sort of bullshit stories to gain his cult followers. He couldn't even resist tapping into UFO idiots group with his most ridiculous bullshit skywalker ranch stories.
      I'm shitpost about him because MF tricked me into his bullshit before. If you want to know more, Decoding Gurus have a good primer on him and his scammy brother.
