    Adding a galvanic isolator between your Mac and the DAC is always a good idea. You only need one that will do USB 2.0 speeds because there are not any audio DACs that require faster USB. They now make a USB 3.0 galvanic isolator for upwards of $400 US, but I just got one that was about a hundred and does USB 2.0.

  • @nickk6109
    @nickk6109 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Historically MacOS itself is fixed byte/sample at a kernel level (the volume control and loudness curves in the kernel were operated in a fixed byte per sample only). So everything is converted to fixed byte/sample then converted back to whichever output you want. Modern OSX releases have seen more plugin APIs into the different components for different bit support and bits per sample etc which works for PCM-PWM but less so PDM (DSD). A sound USB profile will then be supported but that's very likely PCM only native support so getting a proper pure native DSD support on the Mac is a lot of work as you're essentially writing 99% of the sound support including any USB data transport out to the DSD devices.Also for pure high rate DSD, the issue of interruptions from the OS priorities for both the sound support and the USB transport can cause issues.

    • @ThinkingBetter
      @ThinkingBetter 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Any modern operating system is relying on PCM in the architecture as it is easy to process in mixing, volume control, filtering, sample rate conversion, compression, encoding and decoding. DSD is hugely inferior in modern digital audio architectures and as you can just run your PCM in 24 or 32 bits at high sample rates such as 192kHz, it can also easily beat DSD on audio fidelity. DSD has no chance except as an audiophile niche format. Besides modern high-end DACs don’t actually use pure sigma delta in the conversion and the advantage is quite imaginary.

    • @ThinkingBetter
      @ThinkingBetter 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Dale Cooper I will prefer the original digital master format when playing digital audio. If the music is made in a digital mastering process, the master is always PCM even if the studio distributes a transcoded lossy DSD version (typically PCM 352.8kHz DXD to DSD). If the mastering was done on analog tape, the best digital format can be DSD as the direct output of the ADC. Reality is that the audio fidelity easily becomes indistinguishable when you operate at higher sample rates of PCM vs DSD. Modern digitally mastered music will always have the highest quality master as PCM.

    • @bobnot24
      @bobnot24 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wish Roon would get more streaming services. If either of Qobuz or Tidal would go under it would make Roons position insecure. As a maths major the HQPlayer algorithms seem to have been done to an absolute mathematical perfection and there are DAC's right now on the market that have given up on onboard upscaling based on this Roon stack. It would be absolute travesty to lose it. The original Nyquist-Shannon theorems were based on infinity. As audiophiles we don't want to be giving up on computational infinity if we can help it.

"When large off-the-shelf computer hardware with complex software players were the norm we preferred making things smaller and simpler." A mini or even a 100% solid state laptop is the opposite, and the M1s use much less power while still producing a much higher output. Besides, when I play off the mini I don't network stream, but Roon outputs directly to the DAC, so it would not make any sense whatsover to buy any more crap.

    I use Audirvana om my Macs and it's great.. It changes the output format automatically and controls the DAC direcly. • @dudexyt
      @dudexyt 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not quite. It’s more like the best you can playback is DSD256 because it’s using twice as much as bandwidth as though it is DSD512. And it’s the operating system limiting the bandwidth, not the USB protocol since Windows and Linux can play back up to DSD1024 If your DAC supports it.

There's quite a few DIY DACs use FPGAs although the DIY DACs tend to stick using internal FPGA block memory, it's possible to interface RAM (most FPGA vendors have IP cores that will simplify the use of RAM like DDR). It's not too much of a leap programmatically but the multi-layer board design is the reason you don't see more complex DACs for high speed DSD.

    i use pine player to play DSD files on the Mac.

      @kalaskrille 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used Pine but I think it just converts to PCM since my DAC does not recognise the stream to be DSD (whatever settings I try), but when I use Audirvana which also controls the output format, it's recognised as DSD.

    You can do native dsd with roon

    • @kalaskrille
      @kalaskrille 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      To output it to a DSD compatible DAC you still need to do DoP though?

      @@kalaskrille well Mabey. But when I go into settings it gives me to options for dsd protocol. Dop and native..

    • @kalaskrille
      @kalaskrille 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@maxcardenas8257 That's interesting, my DAC does not provide a Native option. Perhaps it could be that my DAC (not Roon certified) only provides DSD over DoP, since it also supports PCM. What are you using to give you the Native option? I'm not very happy with this DAC so might switch anyways..
