- In this performance video Danny Gill plays through the classic Richie Blackmore solo for the Deep Purple track Highway Star. This solo features many of Blackmores trademark melodic rock licks that set the template for heavy metal guitar playing.

In this video Danny Gill shows you how to play the Deep Purple - Highway Star guitar solo as played by Richie Blackmore. This is a very melodic solo that also incorporates some neo-classical elements that helped shape the sound of future shred superstars such as Yngwie Malmsteen.
This solo uses a lot of melodic lines and string bends before going into the classically inspired keyboard style guitar lines to finish.

One of the coolest guitar solos ever.
blackmore is incredible i miss his playing to this day
You want to be practising it to a metronome as 16th notes, to our ears it's very clearly 57885788 etc, but if you're new to fast accurate alternate picking you'll want to take it super slow :)
This is a wonderfully composed solo. Quite the creativity

All i can say is that was nice to watch, DEEP PURPLE's 1973 Album "Live Made In Japan" still stands as the best heavy metal album on the planet, showcasing each band members talents on Bass, Lead, Rythm, Drums Organ and Voice, with extended versions of all the deep purple's songs There's no version on the planet of SMOKE ON THE WATER by any band or evenDeep Purple that absolutely rocks like their version on this album! Not even 'School of Rocks' version lol

are you kidding me...I saw Ritchie Blackmore in concert in a small venue in Richmond Va....He is unbelievabley fast and precise a guitar player...by the way..it was the Mosque in Richmond Va.....

@TheJamesbond321 Hi there Unfortunately we dont have any tabs for this solo. The dvd this video is from Andy James breaks down each and every part note for note showing you exactly what to play. Plus you get 4 other songs with the DVD. I know that doesnt solve your Tab problem but might be an alternative and worthy solution.

No one can listen to a solo like this and say that Ritchie Blackmore ( and Danny Gill also ) isn't a great guitar player.

Would be awesome if someone got the second voice solo too. It's not that hard to hear the solo consists of two guitars playing simultaneously. In fact, Tony Iommi of Sabbath did that a lot in the 70s, too.

if you mean during the rhythm parts (the power chords) all power chords are always down picking.

How can I get this precision in the little finger double notes?

It's 5788 indeed. No offense but you should check what a triplet is. In a triplet all three notes are the same length. In this part of the solo we are playing 16th notes and the third and fourth of every group of four sixteenth notes are the same note.
@TheJamesbond321 Tabs defo not needed i have purchased many products from lick library and have been blown away almost every time.....i dont even use tab anymore its about as close as you can get to one on one instruction without having to take out a loan lol
those are not loose strings danny just has good dexterity

@funny1986 dont tell your self your not talented. a week ago i didnt think i would ever play fast, and then i found some lessons online and now i can play eruption by van halen
The part that starts at 0:53 where the 5, 6, 8 and 8 fret again are played on the E string, it is played so fast that it sounds like only 5, 6 and 8 fret is only played once, and this keeps messing me up big time. When I play the 8th fret twice, I can hear it being played twice. Anyone got any idea how to play a fret twice and making it sound like you are only playing it once?
Lots of wrong things being taught here, mostly in how long the notes ring and things like that(specifically the part preceding the fast bits)

i was listening to led zeppelin communication brakedown solo ..and this was sugested ...and after listnening to jimmys solo this sounds like a fucking opening to mighty morphing power rangers...never liked blackmoe that mutch..
