Switched to cold water shaving a couple months ago, best thing I've done for my face since switching to safety razors! I do have a very sensitive neck and a very thick beard and even with the best handle/blade combo I could find, I was still getting cuts, irritation and razor burn after every shave. Cold water has been a life-saver for me- quicker prep time, great shave and no irritation. Thanks a lot for the video, like you said I highly recommend giving it a try, especially if you have sensitive skin.

I tried rinsing my face in cold water before, during, and after the shave. It definitely helped reduce irritation on my neck where usually red splotches appear. It also felt very refreshing.

Hey Geo! Think it was about 6 years ago this guy got me started on safety razors and wet shaving, I also discovered cold water some years back and actually prefer it over a hot shave. For me at least hot water makes my skin feel more sensitive, also I like the feel of a cold shave seems it gets a closer cut. Rock on Geo, glad to see you still around and Shave Nation growing!

Living in Phoenix I can only get cold enough water off the tap for a cold shave in the winter. I don't do it for every shave in the winter, but I do love the results. It's likely my favorite way to shave. My skin loves it.

I think I'll try cold water shaving tomorrow for my sunday morning shave. I still have some troubles here and there with razorburn and irritation, even with astras and a DE89. It's a lot less than what I got with cartridges and only in some specific trouble spots, but even still, a massive improvement in comfort over cartridges.
I think cold water shaving might actually be the way it's supposed to be done. People use hot water because it softens up the beard, but then to get as close of a shave as possible in a single pass, you need to stretch and pull the skin to expose more follicles. Cold water on the other hand will tighten up the skin. To me this feels like basically the same thing as pulling the skin only backwards. As you said, the cold water seemed to stiffen up the beard. I think this is because it's tightening the skin, causing more of those hidden follicles to pop up and show themselves. Thus, resulting in a closer shave in one pass.

  • @wis1024

The cold water wont stiffen the hair as any water hot or cold softens hair. What it will do is tighten the skin and close the pores in turn the hair raises, like the fur on a cats tail. Water regardless of temperature softens dead cells like hair and fingernails.

found the water temp to be somewhat irrelevant in terms of quality shave. sharp blade, decent product key for me. the brush actually warms up the lather, which seems counter productive during a cold shave, and what one wants during a traditional shave. I have a coarse Beard, so.I like heat. ymmv! your brave dude!

Maybe I'm weird but I've never understood the whole hot shave thing. To me I feel the razor more and I get allot of redness. Using cold tap water it seems like I get a much closer shave with less work. Also I've been using the Israeli Personnas and 1 blade easily lasts me a week. I use the Merkur Futur and pull the razor blade and flip it after every shave. Another thing...I love the Merkur Futur set to 6. I guess I'm a aggressive razor guy. This combo really seems to be my sweet spot.

Hot water shaves always irritate my neck area, esp in winter. So, I've developed this cold water shaving routine w\ Merkur 34c:
    (0. Get a separate electric brush head just for your face/neck)
    1. Disinfect brush head and DE blade (Voskhod) in barbicide solution or rubbing alcohol (10 mins)
    2. Apply moisturizing cream
    3. Exfoliate neck and face w/ electric toothbrush
    4. Apply oil with low comedogenic rating, e.g. grape seed or castor oil
    5. Build lather directly on your face! I use synthetic brush (Vikings Blade) and Derby shaving cream
    6. Shave. Optional: wear Vanquisher swim goggles if you have an eye-related traumatophobia
6.1. Rinse face after each pass
    6.2. Re-apply oil/lather
    7. Apply aftershave -> brush teeth -> rinse face
    8. Take icy cold shower in a spring 3mm wetsuit (~2 mins)
I actually feel and look 5 years younger after such shave. Total time: ~15-20 mins. Each shave should be treated as a medical procedure IMHO

Hey Geo, im new with the DE razor and have been shaving for the last 3 weeks with the typical hot shower and warm water for shaving...For some reason my face gets really irritated and I don't know if its because im pressing to hard on my face or doing more than one pass per lather...I guess ill try cold water shave and see how it goes but my question is "It seems that you are doing more than 3 passes per spot per lather"...Doesn't that irritate someone with sensitive skin? Also, with cold water can you do a With the Grain - Across the Grain pass? I apologize for my ignorance.. Hope you can help! Thanks!

I recently started using coconut oil only as a substitute. No cream or foam. I've been getting great results with that. You ever tried that. Any opinions ?

I like rubbing an ice cube on my face after a hot shave and I personally think it really has a great effect getting no irritation and a really close shave.

After a good cold or hot shave use a cube of ice to rub on ur neck to cool off and close your pores before an alum block and witch haze! Talk about kills the irritation !!!

I get irritation free shaves with hot water. Cold doesn't work for me. But shaving just with the grain, Geo? That's no real test for a cold water shave. Go against the grain, too.
