    The opening in English:
Come, let us worship God, our King.
Come let us worship and fall down before Christ,
    our King and our God.
Come, let us worship and fall down before the
very Christ, our King and our God.
Come, let us worship and fall down before him

For those who are unable to hear this music in an Orthodox Church thisis a "concert". But it was intended to be sung as sacred music at the Great Easter Vigil or Holy Saturday anticipating Easter Sunday.

The only problem I have with this music is that when I'm riding in the car with my friends, they'd rather listen to rap and other crap of that ilk... meanwhile I'm gushing over Rachmaninov and octavists. Those low notes give me LIFE!!!! ❤ What I would have done to be in this choir....

I'll go from death metal to gangster rap to the Valaam choir with an octavist on my way home from work. If I trained I could probably be an octavist. My speaking voice is lower than Miller's speaking voice.

It is SOoooooo sad that the pop fans have been brainwashed out of

This is from the soul. There is something very special about this. I believe Russian choirs almost exclusively reach this depth. I feel saddened that in spite of Rachmaninoff requesting it, they didn't have it, or any part of it, performed at his funeral. God rest his soul.

Wonderful performance. I remember listening to the Rachmaninov Vespers the first time; played in stereo from an LP at a fellow music students flat in 1973. I was awe-struck. The beauty and rich sonority of the performance by the USSR Ministry of Culture Chamber Choir laid bare the shallow contrivance of nationalism and enmity that the US and USSR governments claimed. We are all linked at a much deeper level through art, love and human caring.

I have one partner in the Bass I section, and we have a sole Bass II who has the timbre of a foghorn, and both of them are only 5'7". The latter jokes that he used to be 5'10" until his wife hit him in the head with a frying pan for forgetting about her birthday 15 years ago, lol.

The passion and commitment of this choir is incomparable. It seems that too many people are trying to fit into the limited space because they all want to sing the vespers. I return to this piece over and over again and I never get bored because of the individuality of each choir member. I do not remember a better choir. The conductor is mesmerising as much as the soloists. I love the Alto very much. The tenor is world class to me and I often wonder what happened to him? This introduced me to Rachmaninov and I am glad to say I have never recovered. Thank you.

Someone, please get a grant that combines participants from both countries to sing this in an international tour and album!

I'm an American, and I actually heard a 19-year-old guy and his 45-year-old dad humming the bass part for "Lord Now Lettest Thou" in the checkout line at work today (I'm a cashier). I asked them how they knew it, and they said they are performing it with their church choir this year. They even did the Bb scale for me, and boy, did they nail that low note! The son's voice was already as deep, dark, and resonant as his father's, so God only knows how low he'll be at 45...

Western female voices (in particular) lack the rich, dark depth of Slavic voices essential in such music. The Yale choir, for example, sounds like school children in comparison. Then, of course, there is the problem of having no octavists . . . Indigenous Russian music "works" only in Slavic countries. Otherwise, the notes may be there, but the music fails of its effect on its home ground.

    • @jockmoron
      @jockmoron 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@debwagner7505 I don't entirely agree with this. I have heard some very creditable performances on CD and the web from Western choirs. It's a matter of sensitive conducting and immersion in a tradition that may at first be a bit alien, but any good choir and trained voice will be able to do this. The octavists are not essential in this piece, but I'd agree, they bring a thrilling richness to the music.

51:30 I met so many ways to translate Τῇ ὑπερμάχῳ στρατηγῷ into English including '"O Queen of the heavenly hosts", "To Thee, Victorious Leader" and many others. This is the Kontakion to the Mother of God written in the 7th century. I wonder where you have learned this version of translation from. I met it before and it sounds correct and poetic.

  • @drosselbach

Two comments. 11:52 - There are several ways to translate "Φῶς Ἱλαρόν" (the chant has been originally written in Greek in the early centuries of Christianity) into English including "O Gladsome Light", "O Gentle Light", "O Gladsome Radiance", "O Joyful Light". All of them are more or less correct. However Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia (the part of Russian Church that was formed by Russian refugees who fled abroad after the revolution of 1917 and that joined with Russian Orthodox Church in 2009) uses "O Gentle Light". At the same time Orthodox Church in America (orthodox church that includes mostly anglo-saxon Americans) uses "O Gladsome Light".
21:10 "Glory to God in the highest" is the first line of the chant. However this is actually Hexapsalm, which is preceded by two lines by the choir: "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men" (Luke 2:14) and "O Lord, open Thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth Thy praise" (Psalms 51:15 which is Psalms 50:15 in the Orthodox church). The Hexapsalm itself is not sung by the choir but is read loud instead. In different sheet music collections and in different audio albums you might find this chant named both "Glory to God in the highest" and "Hexapsalm'. The Russian CC to this video says "Hexapsalm".

OK first impression, They're YOUNG! Most of them look to be late teens or early twenties.
2nd thought, IMMEDIATELY in front of G. Miller, is that young Aleksey? With less hair? (The Russian words for Mr. or Mrs. both start with "G" so I'm just shortening it slightly for anyone who doesn't already know)
I know from the news footage of the Original Basso Profundo Trio that G. Miller's SON is well on his way already towards being a Bassist (his oldest) & I know he has an interest in training & mentoring.
& yeah I started it not seeing that it was almost an hour, almost missed my bus, lol.

the slower more legato sections tend to be the best sounding and most in tune! I love this recording because of these strong young voices, although at times I thought it was a little martial. Bogoroditse for example was too fast, not as legato as the lines (phrases) should flow into on another seemlesly and out of tune, I feel part of its beautiful essence was lost because of this fact. But lets just take a moment to appreciate no breaks or stops between any of the pieces: very commendable feat! such an awesome live rendition of this infamous sacred piece of music.

I found her in a different performance; same conductor and octavists, but a different tenor. I don't remember her name, at the moment, but I was able to find one other performance here on YT.
The first time I ever heard "Vespers" was of a Red Army Choir/Chorus. That female performer survived to have what appears to be a pretty good life for a Soviet. The young woman soloist sounds very similar to - Borodino?

There is so much beauty in the world. So why are we living at a time when we are promising to destroy everything good and uplifting? We really cannot go on the way we are. Whether global warming, or military aggression or plundering our oceans. These glorious voices are Russian, the music is Russian, the composer was Russian, the place is Russia, and in this place even God is Russian. Yet the US hates Russia and is determined to pick an unwinnable and appalling destructive fight with that country and its people. Russia needs to be given space and peace and reassurance, not prodding the Big Bear with an Ugly Ukrainian stick wielded by the Political Paranoid. Leave them alone, Putin is not our leader, the Russians will decide who best to represent their interests. Perhaps the entire US political apparatus should be made to travel to one of Russia's magnificent Orthodox churches and listen to such good people as these and then go for a month's walking pilgrimage in that glorious land, sharing its beauty with the people who reside there and call it home. . We are all in the same little boat swimming in an empty ocean of space, the only little vessel ever to ply these depths. How dare we put at risk the very vessel that keeps us safe? Sorry for the rant, but how can we appreciate with ease and calm such humanity and harmony as this, if nagging in our ear at the same time is the shrill and discordant voice of coming chaos? (And as to this performance. I have a record of this music sung by the Bulgarian National Choir. I think that recording is better, though I don't think the deep bass voices were part of that performance. . Possibly what this one particularly lacks is a more reverberant acoustic?. The contralto solo was lovely, just the perfect depth of tone and character for this profoundly Russian music)

The vocal forces are impressive but the interpretation is simply deviant from the score. Why is Movement I, for intance, sung marcato?-Is there anything in the score that would warrant this approach? The entire rendition is permeated with an almost militant character. In Movement V, the descent of the octavists is loud, unblended (one can hear the 2 individual voices), and completely out of character with the musical and religious sentiment. One can go on movement by movement but the essential truth about this performance is that it is completely lacking in spiritual insight and stuck in a material plane. Spivakov is a brilliant musician but this music is far from his ethos as an artist.

Nice singing, but no emotion from the majority of the choir. It would be better if they had some buzz in their faces- then the music will be better. Not following the conductor (who's good) as well. Perfect example is 2:07- he was very clear, and they just wafted in on their ah a beat later. Bad. The way they hold their folders is inconsistent as well. This leads to two things- looking asymetrical and a little bit odd- not like a bloc which a choir should look like; and ruffled pages, making an annoying and unnecessary sound. They should hold their folders in their left hand and turn pages with their right. Have their finger behind the page at least a system early and be ready to quietly turn about a bar before, memorising the last bar of the page so that you can avoid 'pageturn-itis', as my choir director calls it, where you turn the page too late, and don't know your note and you murmur something and it sounds shit. Happens too often. I immediately noticed this. Bad form.
