I personally enjoy "Realistic" game modes- Barb Clans, Corps/Monopolies, MAYBE tech shuffle/dramatic ages (like the idea for these, not necessarily the implementation). That way it still feels like Civ without having Cthulu worshiping Hercules build your entire empire in 3 turns

Definitely agree with a varied approach. Honestly, if the other societies got nerfed to Hermetic Order levels I'd say that mode would work as a staple along with Clans? Because the concept of effectively a secondary bonus set on top of your civ/leader bonus set is a cool one! But Owls and Voidsingers are just wildly OP and situationally so is Sanguine Pact (there may be no more broken unit in the entire game than the first Babylon Vampire).

23:17 Hi, Boes. It’s me. It’s Cascadia. The guy who does this to you annoyingly often, the language guy.
The word, in Attic (Hellenistic) Greek, ἀγωγή, is pronounced: ah-gō-gĒ, like in tree or three.
But Doric Greek speakers, like those of Sparta from which the concept stands from, (The word was used for the crazy training regiment the Spartans went through), say it with a soft ‘e’, so like an ‘a’; like trés or thread.
So, uh… yeah! Pick one?~ Either works!

When showcasing a Civ's capabilities, I prefer no game modes. By not using game modes, it really makes you more reliant on the Civ's unique aspects.
However, when showcasing certain interactions between mechanics (Eleanor+Voidsingers, Hungary+Himiko+Owls) or just having fun, that's where I think game modes are a great tool.

ALSO Also: the pronunciation of "agoge" kind of depends on which dialect (and period) of Greek you are speaking. In Ancient Attic Greek (the variety of Ancient Greek typically taught in schools) it would be pronounced "AH-go-GEH" whereas in modern, contemporary Greek it would sound something like "ah-gho-YI." There are a dozen other dialects from various regions and time periods that I don't know well enough to elaborate on but I think either of the aforementioned would be acceptable.

    • @DavidSmith-mt7tb
      @DavidSmith-mt7tb ปีที่แล้ว +1

I always hear it places the first way. I believe that is the pronunciation in Biblical Greek as well. I think the card is a reference to Spartan warrior training, which was called agoge, so a classical Greek pronunciation would probably be appropriate.

    • @torbjrnpreusschou9030
      @torbjrnpreusschou9030 ปีที่แล้ว +5

BUT seeing as it would be Spartan (the term stemming from the military education they had) and thus Laconia, which according to Wiki probably was associated with West or Doric Greek (not Attic Greek), it was likely more toward the latter pronounciation - "ah-gho-yii" with accent on the latter syllable (ah like AH-lmond, gho as in GOne, yii as in YIN). Very much being a layman here though.

You asked for the correct pronunciation of agoge. A little fact about the card: 'Agoge' was the term for how Spartan boys were raised. From that, we can determine it is Old Greek and must be pronounced in such a way. We know Doric Greek was spoken in Sparta (more specifically Laconian Doric Proper). My best guess, from what I have learned, agoge (or αγωγα in Doric Greek) is pronounced 'AH-gho-ghy' or 'AH-gho-gha'. The gamma (γ) is pronounced like the G in 'good'. The omega (ω) is pronounced like a long 'o', like when you do 'oooooh'.
Didn't intend to write such an article, my apologies. I hope it helped.
    Have a lovely day everyone!
Edit: I elaborated a bit on the pronunciation after realizing it might be a little unclear for any casual reader.

I think Game Modes are pretty good (some are really awesome!).. but sadly the AI cannot use them correctly, thus giving you, the human, an incredible advantage. Particularly : heroes, secret societies, etc. While others like barbarian mode are okay because not that relevant for a victory.
There are also "one time" mods that mix particularly well with one particular civilization (and even custom civilizations, that's something I rarely see youtubers play!) and thus you could use them to make a "meme" game once in a while too.

Currency really is important. Playing Gaul RN. I did currency after I got oppidums. Executed a nice man at arms great general rush (vanilla Gaul with man at arms when you build oppidum). They actually declared on me before that when I settled next to them (was not a forward settle at all). Anyway, I had two iron mines and black marketeer, so I sold everything to get the gold for man at arms upgrades. Before I could start on those commercial hubs they declared a 30 turn emergency and I had to fight other people and couldn't peace out. The war has been going forever now. So needless to say I am in a 2 front war with man at arms and crossbowmen on like turn 80 and was in the negative gold range for a while. Finally fixed it with commercial hubs, which I'd loved to have built sooner.

Pingala is the right choice in vanilla at least 90% of the time. If you have some crazy Magnus start and your civ is dependent on an early religion or wonder then that's maybe 8%. 2% of the time Amani is the only way to secure a classical era golden age and that's probably worth it as well. With secret societies on it's Amani's time to shine since each first suz is a new hero and you can move her around every 5 turns to keep rolling for Herc/Himi/Sinbad.

In reference to the question posed at around the 6minute mark; I typically play either solo or 2-player co-op rounds with my friends. We *usually* (but not always) turn on Secret Societies, Monopolies & Corporations as well as Barbarian Clans but consequently turn up the difficulty as well. If we don't have any of the additional game modes on, we leave the difficulty as is. I think watching games either using or not using them are both appealing and almost always wind up learning something new (which is why I find interest in watching them in the first place).

I really like the whole early war breakdown with no game modes as it can be a general guide for early war regardless of civ. I personally only play with barb clans but even that is kind of easier for the human to exploit than the AI.
As for the other modes especially heros and secret societies, they are fine but they dilute civ uniqueness and are much more about the game mode than the civ. It's much more of a "himiko/herc/sinbad/voidsingers" game/guide/series instead of a "Nader Shah Persia" game.

I agree with you, I've been enjoying not using game modes these days. They're kinda OP and the AI doesn't use them well, makes the game a bit too easy.

Pengala is only like 15% science and culture which isn't much when you are making 4.... But his next promotion gives a very large bonus to culture. Probably culture over the science one anyway, as it unlocks next promotion faster. So getting both promotions out early is more important than the one promotion. Magnus maybe 1 promotion, but even then chopping settlers is probably best use, so you want 2nd promotion again. Other option is the city state girl to get very fast city state. But then your looking at just delaying magnus or pengala.

For me personally I'm interested in a bit of a mix, but I agree with barb clans always being on. I'd also like to see game modes that can especially thrive with a civ! You get a bonus for a lot of kills? ZOMBIES! Or some more silly stuff that might just be a 'Deity Stomp'. Totally not saying this because I'd REALLY like to learn how to rig the dice better so I can beat Deity more legit than a religious 1 v 1 victory vs. OG Kongo. *Coughs in hardstuck Immortal* Also I loved that you coinflipped! I did suggest it but I'm sure I'm not the only one, that said I do like it because I'm looking forward to both.

Barbarians and Monopolies feel very much like parts of the game that should be in the base and it feels weird to not have them enabled imo

  • @Rich-MarsEco

I think the UU swordsmen rush being nerfed by Man At Arms, is because the AI on something like Deity can B-Line the tech before getting Swordsmen if you wanted. They should have had those base units from the start because they didn't mess with the flow of the tech tree to make it feel better.

  • @descuddlebat

I overall love the secret societies, corporations and heroes; my problem is that the rest of the game doesn't really balance around the massive power spikes like doubled trade routes/giga yields from faith with secret societies and tripled yield with a good corporation.. The spikes are for the most part well timed (corporation tech unlock, Cthulhu title unlock with era) so maybe that could be patched up with a mod modifying prices past certain point

I like game modes when they accentuate the strengths of a particular new leader or civ - like doing Owls Portugal for example - but generally no game modes is more fun to watch for me. I do like a mix of regular games and broken memeing though so using game modes for broken memeing seems logical

I feel like game modes are more fun when they're thrown in to add some spice, rather than added as part of the strategy. Barb clans are kinda the best for that, since you cant control what state they become. But Secret Societies is kinda bland when its put in for specific game-busting synergies.

G in greek, as a stand alone letter doesn't exist. To make a G sound you have to combine γ and κ. Agoge in greek is αγογή and γ makes a soft G sound, kinda like Y in yesterday. Same thing is Strategos -> Στρατηγός, G makes a soft g sound similar to Y

I really wish that Corporations and Monopolies were distinct modes. I LOVE the corporation and industry stuff. The extra tiles with standard improvements (that don't count as typical improvements, so no bonuses to your Pantheon, for example), are all fun. Making the Corporations and getting their city buffs and product buffs is fantastic.
Monopolies providing multiple 100% buffs to tourism absolutely sucks, though. They need to retool or remove it. There is nothing fun about it, it just makes the Culture game too easy, IMO.

Would be a good opportunity to test the new Suleiman persona, or a Civ that's really strong in it like Georgia, Mapuche, or America

Game modes are neat to break up normal gameplay, but I think each of them are broken in their own way, such that there’s some really overcentralizing strats depending on which ones you turn on.
