Notice that at 2:12 when he demonstrates 'floating' the object, he's not really floating it. Instead he's rotating the view angle. You can see this because the 3-color axis in the corner is staying aligned with the part. If he were truly floating the part, the part would move and the axis would stay fixed. If he actually floated the part like he said it would be impossible to then rotate at any number of degrees and get it aligned with the Z axis.

It's astonishing how difficult the simplest things are to do in SolidWorks. It would take me about 4 seconds to natively and permanently rotate this part in Autocad. The second method shown in the video doesn't even really rotate the part. It actually inserts a rotate operation to the feature tree. All the sketches are in the wrong orientation now.

in assembly only. can you do it in the part not assembly? There are videos stating you need to create reference geometry and assign the origin then save it out with the new origin but this only seems to work if the planes are aligned when they are imported, for parts for ex. catia where the part is in air plane coordinates I cannot seem to change the origin.... tried a lot videos... only way for me to through the day is to translate the origin in catia and save out...

this is in assembly mode. What about changing the orientation of a part in part mode?

I see you rotate it in the begining but how do you do that?

I don't see FLOAT in dropdown box expanded when rite-clicking object name in assembly feature tree manager. Is FLOAT an option in all Solidworks versions?

Float is only an option in an assembly level when it's not the first part hat has been inserted. By default the first part you insert into an assembly is FIXED, this means you cannot move it and it becomes the reference point for the rest of the parts. However, if you then right click the part you can click on FLOAT and it becomes movable. This command then changes to FIXED when it's in FLOAT mode.
If you still cannot see it, at the bottom of the menu (after you right click on an object name), click on the bottom most command called "Customize menu", and make sure the command is there and has a check next to the name so that it's always visible.
      hope this helps.
