Tartit is one of the most important groups in the Tuareg music scene, and one of the few groups composed mainly of women. The group was formed in 1995 in exile in the Mauritanian and Burkinabe refugee camps. All members are from the Goundam region close to Timbuktu. They sing about exile, love, peace and the political condition of the Tuareg people. Tartit was founded to safeguard traditional Tuareg music, which was slowly disappearing. Their music is inviting and almost hypnotic, leading you into the mystical world of the Kel Tamasheq (people who speak Tamasheq, the language of the Tuareg). They are currently living in exile again in Mali's capital Bamako. They present their latest album, 'Amankor / Exile', as well as more traditional songs from their rich repertoire.
Tartit is een van de belangrijkste groepen in de Toeareg-muziekscene, en een van de weinige groepen die voornamelijk uit vrouwen bestaat. De groep werd opgericht in 1995 in ballingschap in de Mauritaanse en Burkinese vluchtelingenkampen. Alle leden komen uit de regio Goundam vlak bij Timboektoe. Ze zingen over ballingschap, liefde, vrede en de politieke toestand van het Toeareg-volk. Tartit werd opgericht om de traditionele Toeareg-muziek, die langzaam aan het verdwijnen was, veilig te stellen. Beautiful. 72 years old, I keep my ancestral rhythm in drumming and hand percussion. Used to have a mezzo soprano voice then. I let my rhythm speak (although I still love to sing, I refrain. Too off key).❤
