We had a monarch before that unfortunately hatched with a deformed wing. PLEASE DO NOT TRY THIS!
Unless you have surgeon hands and KNOW what materials to use, DO NOT DO THIS! You will hurt the butterfly more and cause it pain. The best thing you could do is keep it as a pet to give it a longer life, let it outside to maybe interact with and pair with the other butterflies.
The correct way to repair their wings is to use another butterfly wing or down feather as substitute (regular feathers like that with the spine in the middle are far too heavy), and the TINIEST BIT OF GLUE
Like, only 2 tiny droplets of glue where the prosthetic wing will connect to the real wing. You cannot just directly layer in on the deformed/broken wing.

@@OwenMaxwell-jr2ib NO! 😭😭SMH someone's bound to take it that way. With one rescue we attempted to help before, we used the wing of a different butterfly that had passed away. We've collected a few monarchs and Luna moths since when they get old, they just stop flying around and tend to lie dead on the ground. My mother really insisted on doing it but she wasn't patient enough and it was a failed attempt. We did keep the butterfly in our hatcheries though until it died naturally. Didn't want to throw it out into the wild with a still broken wing.

Hi there! I breed monarch butterflies, and volunteered with my country's monarch tagging program.
Even the piece from The Dodo was met with a lot of concern from the butterfly community, because the butterfly involved appeared to have a disease called Ophryocystis elektroscirrha, or OE. OE can be spread by infected butterflies dropping spores on milkweed. It causes wing deformities, and makes infected butterflies weak. Humane euthanasia is the best option. Encouraging untrained people to do wing transplants could cause a lot more spread of diseases like OE.
Wing transplants ARE a thing in the butterfly community, but they are done a. with a real donor wing, and b. only with butterflies that are healthy and young.

Yall in the comments are assuming the worst while knowing nothing about the subject. Look at other butterfly repair videos, this technique works and is worth it. Most butterfly species live between 2 and 4 weeks, but some species can live close to a whole year, so improving their quality of life and ability to survive is very much worth the time. And no, butterflies cannot grow their wings back. If they are damaged or lost, they are gone for good. Unless a kindhearted person takes the time to repair their wing with something light, like this feather.
