* IMPORTANT NOTE * At the 10-minute mark in this video, I take a jab at Apple trying to show how they support diversity and inclusion by featuring ONLY female developers in their 2022 Mac Studio video. That's the OPPOSITE of diversity and inclusion, Apple! Some thought I was implying that adding more gender diversity ruined the keynotes. That was not my intended message and that is not what my channel is about, so please don't take it that way. Losing Steve Jobs and forgetting the fun, rebellious soul of Apple ruined the keynotes. The only "drama" I want to stir-up on this channel is with grizzled Windows loyalists trying to propagate the platform wars from the 90's. ... or anyone implying Marathon is a 'Doom-clone'... OK, that's it.
It's nice to set the record straight but trying to clarify or explain doesn't usually work in [current year]. Thanks for the great videos! The algorithm blessed me very recently and I have watched a bunch of your stuff. Love the insights and humor. Keep it up! It'd be cool to see a video expanding on your thoughts about the boring-ization of the Apple line-up. Peace!
@@syloui I had a moment in the WWDC24 keynote where I realized they were trying to sell AI features to take all the work and creativity out of what they used to market iMovie for. No longer a bicycle for the mind, now just a WALL-E Laz-e-boy designed to drip feed dopamine in exchange for in app purchase royalties and recurring subscriptions.
I can never get over how so thoroughly media trained those presenters are. All making that same power stance in front of the green screen, all doing the same gestures and style of speaking. Every once of their personality drained to become a representative of the Apple corporation.
The video look casual at first but then I realized it is so indepth and structured, I have watched it twice to wrap my mind around it. It is a masterpiece. Especially in tune with your statement about the bygone era of Steve's wholesome presentation. Please make more of these, the world is too shallow now, this video is gold.
@CerroZimm That’s something I’ve never thought of. A good idea considering how popular they still are. Thanks for the suggestion. I will think on that.
@@65scribe Thanks for considering it. The 5,1 is the last Mac Pro from Steve reign. It is significant in almost every way. I am in awe about the design internally/externally, it is the pannicle of Apple‘s design, when everyone including Johnny Ive and Steve still under one roof. It was THE power house for design.
This channel was randomly recommended to me by the algorithm today. As someone who was born on the 80’s and whose father worked in the publishing industry, I’ve used almost every model of Mac you’ve gone through on your channel. Sometimes (rarely) the algorithm works as it should. Fantastic stuff right here.
Always great to hear from someone who came blindly into the channel and liked it. Especially someone who has a long history with Macs. Glad you took a chance on the algorithm!
I work for a printing shop in the sign and vehicle wrap side and the print side is fascinating to me, they’ve been all-Mac since 1996 and almost all of the old machines were stored safely in the basement, I’ve since been given free reign over the old machines and as a windows user since 1993 (age 5) I’m loving my transition to Mac person. I’m in the process of converting our pc’s on the sign side to Macs with parallel booted windows 11 to run our wide-format printers. My job and hobby are finally merged and it’s awesome 🤩
I still have my G5 too. Dual 1.8GHz from late 2003.. set me back about $2500, but spurred my leap into the modern Macs and Digital Performer DAWs. What a blast from the past! :D
I use a PowerMac G5 ATX-converted case as a TV stand. The TV's base fits *to the millimeter* the Mac's footprint. It's stylish, more stable than anything I could afford now, and I even rescued it from being trashed! Absolute win. EDIT: It was already dead and gutted when I rescued it. Although someone committed crimes against computing, at least I gave it another chance of living. Sad that I couldn't enjoy it.
Definitely a win mate. Little bit miffed I got rid of a working Mac classic about eight years ago. Retro tech is the best. I realise now it will always be in my life 😁😁
@@charliesretrocomputing They’re simply amazing, I’m a mini machine shop hobbyist and love metalwork and the towers are perfection. I use mine to grate cheese 😂
This was hugely informative and entertaining. The Blade Runner parody was absolutely brilliant. And...HEY! It's more of that tour guide girl! I love your style, never change.
Thanks so much for giving your feedback. Very glad the Blade Runner parody came off so well with everyone, and no one is asking me why I was in a bathrobe talking to a G5.
Wow, I didn't know this video was actually new. I just thought it was made in 2005, given the video used 4:3 aspect ratio instead of 16:9 and everything was smooth in a normal pace! Amazing nostalgic video, great work! 😎👍
Thanks so much! I used to have to defend that the aspect ratio was for practical reasons. I needed a tight frame to feature the machine and it matches the aspect of the period footage I’ll be using. It’s now come around as a retro style, and I could not be happier about that. :) Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts! Great to hear!
Great to have a vid that ISN’T *_HEY GUYS!!! TODAY I’LL BE INSTALLING FLAME THROWERS ON MY PC!!!!11!1!1!!_* scene change scene change scene change loud graphics scene change 😂
I loved every minute of this. I can't think of another TH-cam channel creating 1 hour long videos that I'd happily and gleefully sit through. Great work!
I love that I got chills of excitement when I saw the runtime. I can barely make it through most Hollywood movies, yet this, I will watch without a single pause break.
I love the running theme of Michael Spindler being the constantly referenced, often unseen, villain of your video reviews. There's always at least one jab to him or that era of Apple in your vids. And I think it's cool you're one of the few to recognize how important Gil Amelio was to Apple. He saved the company and brought back Steve Jobs.
Yes, even though I was a fan of Macs in the 90’s, the company itself didn’t interest me and I took Amelio’s ousting as an indication that he failed to turn Apple around. Once I started digging into what actually happened, it became apparent that he was one of the heroes in Apple’s story, completely overshadowed by Steve Jobs manipulation of events. I don’t blame him for writing a book. In the same research I could not find any redemption for Spindler. My impression of him just got worse the more I looked into events. Thanks for your comment!
@@65scribe For years I thought I was the only one who thought Gil Amelio got an undeserved bad rap from his time helming the ship at Apple. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one!
Very interesting Video! I bought a G5 new in 2006 and used it until 2012, when I switched to a mid 2010 Mac Pro which I am using up until now. The case design and built quality of these machines is still well ahead average.
Yes! Finally the G5 video! I sold my 10€ first gen 1.8ghz G5 quite a while back to a small publishing company that needed the vintage system to talk to their printers. It was fun tinkering with it until it lasted, and unlike their other dual processor G5s mine is apparently still alive and kicking :D (they wrote to me a few months back saying that the one I sold them is the last one standing)
The graphics shop I work at has 4 top-spec G5’s in the basement. There was a blueberry g3 iMac too, but I saved that one, keyboard and round mouse included!
@@65scribe I’ve become a bit of a Mac hoarder since subscribing to you and Action Retro and I’ve been given the entire Mac basement lol. It turns out that 2 of the towers are actually 2010-ish Mac Pros with dual Xeons and not G5 like I originally thought. I also now have a 2005ish iMac g5. Everything is in perfect condition. The G5s won’t boot, I haven’t figured them out yet. No bad caps though from what I can see.
These videos are a treat for me and my boyfriend to watch. I show him just one and suddenly 2 hours later we decide to get up and go on with our days. Thank you for all that you do! These are wonderfully crafted videos.
I bought my G5 in 2004. It's a 1.6Ghz model that I bought refurbished for $1299. It was my favorite computer of all time until I got my Mac Studio (sorry, it's amazing!). I still have it, though it doesn't get used much anymore. It's in pretty much perfect condition. These days it doesn't do anything 'well' which is probably why it's not used. It's sad, as I love the design of it. The video was great, and a nice trip down memory lane.
Great reading you personal G5 story. Glad you can still enjoy it's unblemished case design, if nothing else. Nothing against the Mac Studio, either. If I weren't so hopelessly outdated, I'd be using one, too. I'm happy you liked the video!
The G5 really was the last of its kind. The final frontier in terms of PowerPC architecture among Apple. But I have to say the case really is timeless. I feel like a lot of modern cases took note of its deliberate organization especially with drive bays and even PSU enclosures that kept it separate from the rest of the machine. Even if that enclosure was sure to probably melt considering the G5 doubled as a space heater.
Great observations on the case design, itself. You're right about the timelessness of this tower design, whereas the PC towers from the same period look very dated.
I was recommended this video yesterday and have now binged on several more videos of yours while poorly today. Thank you for your hard work and superb Mac knowledge. I remember being a kid and playing around configuring the most expensive Mac Pro I could, then being in awe of such a machines very existence.
I wasn't sure how interesting I would find a video about a Mac that I tend to find very uninteresting, but you not only kept my eyes glued to the screen for an hour, you taught me a bunch of things too. Bravo!
Not one of his works. This was from an Apple commercial that only appeared in their website, found here, though not the best fidelity. th-cam.com/video/UPmP3ojDjDg/w-d-xo.html
More of the Petrolia tour guide! Such an innocent and joyful spirit! You guys were so fortunate to have spent such time with a carefree person. Thank you for sharing the memory.
Really enjoyed this. Thank you. I once owned a 1.6ghz single G5, circa 2008. Used it as a bit of a media center. One day when I came home, approaching the front window I could see the curtains waving wildly inside the house. My now wife and I exchanged glances, no one was home. Went inside to be greeted to the sounds of the fans at full speed. When a G5 crashed or the software locked up, it seems the PMU or whatever lost contact with the rest of the machine after going "hello? Hello??" for awhile, and hearing nothing back from the temp sensors, it would slowly ramp all fans to max. I have two G5's now, I think that's enough. A working dual processor of some sort, and a non working but not leaking water cooled model of some kind. I forget now. Electricity is expensive here. I calculated that running my Xserver 3,1 with all cores maxed costs more per year, than buying an M2 Mac mini at full retail.
That’s a great G5 story, and I can completely see that happening. Lol. Very interesting that you put numbers to the power consumption and how the machines from 20’years ago fail the modern cost equation. Great post!
I loved my G5 tower and still have it to this day. It has been long dead and replaced, and I have used both PCs and Macs since, but I can’t seem to part with it. It’s an old friend. My current desktop is a M2 Pro MacMini with 32gb of RAM and a total of 6TB of storage (1TB internal, 5TB Thunderbolt) and it flies, running multiple OS’s (including Win11 Pro, which will tell you its processor is “Apple Silicon” if you pull up its specs), but I do miss having all that internal space and slots for cool customization of my old PowerTower. I made a lot of money with that G5, and had a lot of fun. It was a great computer.
Another great video from you! I have got G5 quad couple of months ago for about 136 USD here locally in Israel. Also had that cool holographic G5 poster I found in closed Apple distributor (Yeda) offices back in 2008, but decided to give it to a friend who is a collector.
@@65scribe Sorry for getting back so late (youtube is not consistent with notifications) but I love the fact that you use an older camera. It feels very correct for the topics you cover, and for these older apple systems they sometimes have a "home computer" esque nostalgia to them, and the camera along with other features of the video enhance that feeling. Maybe im just showing my age, lol.
Literally just bought a G5 yesterday, it's the first gen 2.0 GHz model. I plan to dual boot Mac OS X with the Xenon dev kit software that came on those early dev kits Microsoft ordered in 2003
really great video. the g5 certainly has "unique" engineering. the era of ppc desktops from AIM alliance to the end deserves to be remembered for how valiant the fight was.
I wept with tears of joy when a new '65Scribe' Macintosh video appeared in my feed, then wept with tears of laughter watching the video. These are the *best* vintage Macintosh overview videos by a Canadian Mile. Is that different to a US mile??). I am now hoping that you mortgage the farm and buy all of the Macs you don't have, simply so I can enjoy more videos.
Glad I invoked 'happy' tears. That's great you had fun watching the video. A Canadian mile is a kilometer, and shorter than a US mile, but, either way, I'm glad you see me far ahead of any others doing this. I have a good supply of Macs, it's just about having the time to make the videos. I'm hoping to become independently wealthy by accident to solve that problem.
This was my very first Mac and I loved it. It was an incredible machine to work on. During a time when freeware and Creative Commons software was so easy to install on OS X. I did so much creative work on it. To this day I don't regret buying it. If Apple hadn't switched to Intel, the support for their PowerPC products could have been for a longer time. Also, it was a lot less expensive to get a professional machine like this, that you could upgrade in the future, than their Mac Pros with M chips for tens of thousands of dollars... Sigh...
Cool to see you back with another entertaining Mac video! I used the G5 2x2.5 GHz machine at work for several years. I actually never had any issues with it. It was a powerful machine for its time. I did prefer using it over the dual 867 Mhz G4 mirror door machine I used before that, which had an annoyingly loud whining fan. The G5 was a lot quieter.
I have watched your videoes since 2020, and like always this is another great video, personally I dont mind waiting around a year for well detailed and well entertaining videos :D
Thanks for your feedback! I would like to be a little more frequent with uploads and the past year was a bit of an anomaly. I’m glad to have kept the audience I have. The great performance of this video alleviated my concern that past viewers had moved on.
Thank you for another wonderful video and taking me back to the ‘good old days’. The quality and level of care taken with your work is very hard to find. I hope you continue to enjoy an audience for many years to come.
Amazing! I watch a lot of retro computer stuff on TH-cam but this... This is art. This is profound. I can't express how I feel after watching it. And the seemingly random bit at the end which could be a banal piece of home video or something that meant a lot to someone at some point. Like tears in rain... Thank you
Thanks so much, Marv! I'm fortunate to get some good feedback, but rarely such a well-composed, glowing review as that! The random 'Oil Museum' bit at the end has been on-going through the last half of this Macintosh series, with loyal viewers demanding to see a bit more in each video. :)
Such a fantastic treat to see this video from you! I watch pretty much everything on TH-cam at 2x speed but not your videos, they are truly art masterpieces…. Much like the G5 case design! One of my favorite computers ever and I learned so much… thanks for the laughs and slow burn humor, hits just the right spot!
Thanks for the detailed review, Alex. That really helps to know your impression of the video. Great to know I hold a unique place in your video viewing habits. I’m glad I hit one of your favourite computers with this video. I’m catching up on responses, so sorry for the delay!
You are welcome! Great to know I reached you all the way out in Fife, Scotland! A beautiful place from all I've heard. My family name is Kells, so I've always wanted to visit that part of the world.
The effort you put into this documentary is admirable. This is not just an examination of the Powermac G5, it is a testimony to the recent past, and also fun and nostalgic at the same time. I liked it a lot.
Thank you very much for your thoughtful feedback on the video. That’s great to hear that you got more out of it than just a review of the machine. Sorry for my delayed response. I actually really appreciate the feedback.
Excellent video! You really captured the whole G5 timeline perfectly, ranging from the initial excitement and optimism to the disappointment in its shortcomings, all the way to the Intel transition. The only thing you really didn't touch on enough was the fact that the PowerBook line was forever slated to be stuck on the G4, but really, one could also argue that was beyond the scope of this video. Still, I love your videos and you dry sense of humor, as well as your passion for Macs of all years. I hope you keep doing these for a long time to come!
Thank you! Very true on the Powerbook G5 'expectation' going on for years only to never appear. I just didn't think there was really much to say on that ... beyond a picture of a fire-damaged Powerbook G4 and captioning it, "Rare Powerbook G5 prototype", or some joke like that. Always good to hear what you like about the videos. That keeps me interested in making more.
my g5 went pop a few months ago and i was pissssed. i think it might be the psu as they have an apparent failure rate of like 14% from memory. great engineering apple
I know that feeling. Many used G5's I got would stop working shortly after, or they would be sold as 'untested', which means 'DOA'. A couple had bad psu's and I know there was a stream of bad capacitors from China at the time. In that case it's, "great sourcing Apple". Some would boot if I heated the board up with a hair dryer. Not very practical. lol
This is.. absolutely incredible, I feel glued to watching the video! I've been trying to get my own channel up and out, covering unusual projects and modifications and whatnot. I'm struggling with views, but in your views I see humor, good storytelling, and a way with words. I hope to take some inspiration, this is great and entertaining. At last, someone else who covers the G5! haha
One of my favorite Macs. Brought one used, cheap and well past it's prime and it did everything I needed for college, still have thing acting as a makeshift table in my office. The case design is honestly beautiful. This was a really great video.
Thank you very much, and sorry for the late reply. I always like reading personal stories like this, so I appreciate you sharing that. A nice machine to keep around just for looks, you’re right.
Difficult to express how awe-inspiring these were when they were introduced. I was certified to repair them and worked on many. Still have a scar on my left hand from cutting myself on the chassis replacing the unheard-of-at-the-time kilowatt power supply in one of the beefier models. They’re still art pieces IMO, I should pick one up.
When I had my hands on a G5, I had one of the liquid cooled later models… and boy it ran like crap no matter what I tried. The G5 is probably the most finicky and accident prone metal Mac to ever exist… rivaling the Performa’s in terms of quality and function issues. Honestly I do not miss than thing, but I’m glad to see you made a new video!! :D (Also, fun fact! The liquid cooled models did NOT use water, but rather a special type of coolant… which happens to be highly conductive. It’s partly why a lot of these liquid cooled G5’s tend to blow up because the coolers leak right into the PSU below them. I also love this era of computers, because the G5 and Pentium 4 were the final chips we got before the great transition of 2006. The year of the core 2 duo and the Intel Macs.
“This do anything?” - I remember watching the 2003 keynote in the theater of a retail Apple Store, and being amazed at the specs and numbers Steve presented. “Wow, 3 GHz, nobody will ever need more” I thought, lol. Anyone remember the tv spot they showed with the guy being blown away by the speed? It got banned or scrapped pretty soon after. Great video!
Thanks! Great memory of the Apple Store theatre. I used the end of that G5 commercial in my video, where Jeff Goldblum speaks. That was all around the ‘fastest computer’ claim. By the time they’d made a judgement against it, Apple had already pulled it, saying that it had run its course anyway. Predictably, Dell was the one complaining.
About 7 or 8 years ago, after some Druaga1's videos, I managed to find and buy an empty G5 case and proceeded to mod it into fully ATX capable case. To this day I'm still using it to house my "main" PC (it's been thru 3 builds already) and even tho it limits me from cooling, cable management and the build quality leaves much to be desired, I wont trade it for anything new off the shell. Just this week, after keeping an eye out for the whole time, I managed to obtain a 2nd one - 4th gen 2.3 Ghz with the blinks of death. With the stock internals dead, it's definitely time for ATX mod REV 2 to begin!
That’s a great example of using the G5 case after it dies. As a collector, I don’t like to hear about good working machines having internals scrapped for a mod, but what you’re doing makes perfect sense. Especially if you can custom build your perfect machine.
@@65scribe Thank you! Being an older tech enthusiast myself (even tho my niche are slot cpus and dual gpu boards) I wouldnt also ruin a running machine. Sadly, I havent come across even one working so far - for the last 7ish years, Ive had the possibility to only get 3 cases - the 1 I got, one which has gutted by a savage and the 3rd one was already attempted to be modded and ruined in my eyes. Both of mine are the "scratch and dent" special, with the first one being way worse with broken off legs. Free tip to anyone that would need it is: to repair broken off legs is pretty easy. The way I've fixed mine is get a few wodden wedges with the correct form, hammer them in till you get the leg where it should be (having the side panel on to align it is key) and then drill and fasten it to the case with bolts. Is it perfect repair - no. Does it still hold my tower up? - yes. I would even say with some patience you can easily get it to stock shape to prevent any wobbling and fir the side panel without any issue.
The legend is back. My own G5 was made a little before the Mac Pro was released in 2006 so I consider it to be unique given the weird limbo status it likely held for it’s original owner
A lovely beast of a Power Mac. Had the 1.6 GHz new back in yonder days and later got a quad. Both ended up in a non-working state for various reasons, however, and I've since bought a 2 GHz 2005 model and swapped in a 2.5 GHz module from the quad, and that worked, so I have an oddball 2.5 GHz dual-core G5 that still works. I even upgraded the drive to a SATA SSD. It's a system that never feels old, really, being such a power house and having such a cool look. I feel as though it could continue to keep up if only software developers would continue to support it. Having PCIe, it could probably even rock a modern video card with some finessing.
It absolutely can continue to run modern software and even a modern video card, but not under Mac OS X. You'd need Linux. That's what I did with my iMac G3 once it was no longer supported by Mac OS.
@@3rdalbum Yeah, Linux or some other option since Apple is sure never to support it. I know there are still Linux distros out there that target older and lower-spec hardware. Void comes to mind.
I am not even an apple guy but I love your videos! Amazing quality and love the humor. But I am staring at my 1998 Sun Ultra 5 with 64-bit 400MHz UltraSPARC IIi CPU and questioning the "first personal computer with a 64-bit CPU" :P Unless you don't count the low-end workstation as a personal computer for some reason. Anyways, thanks for sharing your videos, always a treat!
Yeah that's a weird thing for Steve Jobs to say. Because if a workstation is not a "personal computer", the Powermac G5 shouldn't really qualify either. It's not the kind of computer you'd buy for normal home tasks and web surfing.
I know this was closely evaluated when Dell protested Apple's claims in the legal system. For 64-bit, they did side with Apple being first based on the definition of a 'personal computer '. Families bought it, it had strictly consumer apps on it ... something like that. Like I said, it didn't actually mean a whole lot. I am happy to hear that the video holds up for even a non-Apple guy. Thanks!
I'm only 14 minutes into this video so far but oh my god this is entertaining. Your comedic timing in your editing is perfect. This is a fantastic video.
Thank you, Michael. It did take awhile but it was also a tough year. Working on the video was a great escape from everything, so I appreciate having such a receptive audience to make videos for.
The fact that you edit these videos on a 2008 Msc Pro is just amazing to me. I have one as well, I should use it more but mine has DVI ports only, so I'd need some old monitor to use it with. Great video!
Thanks! But wait… are you telling me there is something better than DVI? ;) During the making of the video I upgraded my setup to a 2010 Mac Pro and it’s an amazing difference, while still being able to use Final Cut Pro 7. Glad you liked the video!
@@65scribewhat are the specs of your 2010 Mac Pro? I upgraded from a maxed out ‘07 Mac Pro to a DP ‘09 MP, previous owner had updated the firmware to the 2010 firmware to support the 6 core Xeons (I upgraded mine to 2x 3.’46 Xeons). Even installed a AMD Vega 56 video card (only works on 10.14 iirc). Haven’t used it for about a year due to CPU cooling issues that I haven’t been able to figure out, so I’ve used my old ‘07 Mac Pro a lot more since.
I got one this last weekend, boxed and all, from a fellow vintage computer enthusiast at our monthly meeting. Safe to say it pairs nicely with wife’s iMac g4.

Thank you @magnusharrison2715 !! Great to know that the videos hold-up to multiple viewings. I appreciate you watching, letting me know how much you enjoy my work and your advice to make the channel stronger. I'm definitely held back from more frequent content by my 9-to5 job. Well, oil museum girl was at the end of her summer job, so she pretty much knew everything. Regarding visitors arriving for a tour, she gave us some sage insight, "The trick is to hide. Make it look like no one's here. It's like hiding from a dinosaur in Jurassic Park."

I got a PowerMac G5 fourth generation 2gz with a 20 inch Cinema Dispaly and I love it. I put a SSD hard drive in it, 16gb of Ram and a Quadro NVidia 4500 FX 4500 and I can run run all the games created from the PowerPc area like Starcraft, Warcraft, Age of Empires 1 and 2, Unreal Tournement 1,2,3, and 4, Quake 1-2-3-4 Civilization 3 and 4 and dozens of other old and good games under MacOS 9.22 and MacOS X Tiger 10.4. It works very fine...The only thing I had to change is the 6X DL SuperDrive which was crap. I found a used one on EBay.....I paid 120$ Cnd for the tower and the Display.! I'm very satisfied...!
Thanks! I did have to move away from using the on-camera microphone just for efficiency reasons. Though, I realize it has a classic sound, like you said.
I miss this era of Apple/Macs; gorgeous, functional, upgradable and financially accessible desktops. Not anymore. I converted PowerMac G4 into a fully functional m-atx build not long ago b/c that era is very nostalgic for me.
Thanks for the great video! For years I've been keeping ISOs of the last versions of Leopard and Xcode sitting around just waiting for me to finally grab one of these machines and do some [incredibly inefficient] 64-bit programming with.
WOW!! I'm amazed at your video! You really took great care and the love shows! One of the best ever videos I've seen! Personally I own a second-generation 2.0 GHz PowerMac G5 (7,3) with 8GB RAM (max'd out). I'm having a hard time finding a dual-link video card under $100! Absolutely insane price for a 20-year machine. I'd love it if you could dedicate a video on the PowerMac G5 being a viable machine in 2024. Another video you could do is the video card options for these machines. I was actually looking forward to that section - I didn't think it was boring. Anyways, thank you for taking me down memory lane and RIP Steve Jobs!
Sorry I didn't respond earlier. Thanks very much for your message! You have a mid-range second generation G5? That's one that I've never encountered. One of those models that didn't stand out, but that makes it special and cool in it's own right. An interesting idea on USING a Power Mac G5 in 2024, though I've noticed a couple thumbnails of other videos apparently tackling that question... not that it would stop me. Now, I did actually write that section on the later G5 videos cards, but I didn't have the cards I wanted to talk about so I decided to cut it. Here is the rough script (since at least YOU didn't find it boring - thank you): " To run that 30” display, you were required to buy it with the nvidea 6800 ultra… a long card which had 2 special DVI ports to drive two 30” monitors. it also had 256MB of RAM and occupies the adjacent PCI slot. This time on purpose! In 2005 Apple would offer the option of the ATi X850XT, which could run a single 30” display, plus a second ADC display. Because plenty of those screens were kicking around at the time. It took only a single slot and was equally as powerful as the nvidea monster. In the third generation it was ATI cards across the board. So 9600’s and you got the 9650 as the top end, which would also drive the 30” display, but significantly less powerful than the 9800…. um.. which could not...What?! And so the nvidea 6800 ultra became an option not a requirement, but now called the 6800GT .. which was actually less powerful than the ultra. (I don’t know/this is confusing me) In the 4th generation everything went nvidea. The AGP slot was gone The card just plugged into the fastest pci express slot. The 16x. Adc was now absent on all the cards. The 6600LE in the low end had 128MB of RAM where the higher models had the full 6600 with 256MB ram. They could all handle a 30” display plus a second non 30”, though this card was NOT highly regarded by power users. Now If you wanted two 30” displays off one video card, you’d need the Quattro 4500 with 512mb of vram. Holy crap. Most feel The ultimate card apple offered as build to order was the 7600gt option but those are now very rare. The G5 video cards and new Mac Pro video cards are not transferable between systems, even though they both use PCIexpress, " I hope that helps!
This video came out at a great time, I just acquired a G5 Quad off of Marketplace about a week ago for 40$. I inspected the liquid cooling system and all looked well. Powered right up, I was shocked. My first G5 machine and I love it. I got quite the laugh out of the Intervention clips.
That’s an impressive deal! Glad to hear you got one to mess around with. The Intervention episode took some time to track down, so I’m happy to hear it was worth it.
Peace!
Thanks for taking the chance and watching! The algorithm came through for me! Appreciate the feedback and suggestion. Happy to welcome another viewer.
Well said.
You need courage these days to point out that DEI = Exclusion 💪
@adinwashere Thanks so much! I appreciate the support!
what an absolute treat to find on our feed today, we are so back
most of them legitimate🤣🤣
I let out a literal gasp of excitement when I saw a new 65Scribe video had been released. 🎉🎉🎉
Me too!
Steve Jobs keynotes were so much more entertaining and engaging than the current dull pre-recorded videos... so true.
The soul of apple left with Steve Jobs. He would've never in a million years greenlit that Art vs Hydrolic Press advert
I re listen to them periodically, I’ve never watched one of the post-jobs ones more than once
Steve was once in a lifetime speaker. There was just no replacement for him. Simple matter of fact.
That's an amazing review! Thank you so much!
@@65scribe by the way, will you consider making one for MacPro 5,1?
@CerroZimm That’s something I’ve never thought of. A good idea considering how popular they still are. Thanks for the suggestion. I will think on that.
@@65scribe Thanks for considering it. The 5,1 is the last Mac Pro from Steve reign. It is significant in almost every way. I am in awe about the design internally/externally, it is the pannicle of Apple‘s design, when everyone including Johnny Ive and Steve still under one roof. It was THE power house for design.
Now this is a great Father’s Day gift!
Happy Father’s Day to you, 65!
Thanks! .. and the same to you, and all the other fathers out there!

Well done keeping the G5 useful 20 years later!
I love that I got chills of excitement when I saw the runtime. I can barely make it through most Hollywood movies, yet this, I will watch without a single pause break.
That's an amazing review, Evan, thank you!
So you know the G5 well. I'm glad you found it interesting. I'm also using a 2010 Mac Pro 95% of the time. The other 5% is among 150 other Macs. :/
A testament to the longevity of the G5!
Thanks for sharing that story and good hearing from you again.

Before the Wii the gamecube actually used the PowerPC as well. I was always really surprised by how accepting consoles were of PowerPC.
I never followed consoles very much, so I was surprised as well. Good point with the GameCube.
This video just made my whole month, thanks 65scribe! One of my favorite Macs too.
A blessing from the lord!
Excellent. The blade runner edit was so well done!
Thank you! I always liked that scene, so it was fun to re-create it.

Yes!!! I love your videos so much! Thank you!
You’re welcome! Sorry, just now catching up..

I’m glad to be back. That’s great you got one of the first water cooled G5’s that didn’t fail.

I appreciate that very much, William! Great to know that you enjoy my work so much.
Not very practical. lol
This video is freaking cinema.

I love my 1.8 ghz G5, it’s such a well made machine.
Well said, John. They are great to look at. Sorry to hear you got a permanent scar working on one!
(Also, fun fact!
38:36 the unreal tournament intro parody was so smooth it took me off guard lol
I was seriously doubting anyone would pick-up on that. Your credentials are in check. Well done!
Thanks @rgbmew !! I hope the rest of the video holds up to your initial impression. I do recommend taking breaks. It's a bit long. :)
Ahhh G5, the last glory of once popular RISC+Unix workstations :)
It was worth the wait. Absolutely fantastic. Fascinating and bloody hilarious. This must've taken months to create. Thanks so much.
Thank you, Michael. It did take awhile but it was also a tough year. Working on the video was a great escape from everything, so I appreciate having such a receptive audience to make videos for.
Hopefully the next year will be a better one.
Great that you got that. Also great that you have a monthly meeting! I thought those were a thing of the past.
I’ve watched all your videos video 3 times at least already and it feels like a different one each time
I love your videos so much. Please make more frequent content, I can see your channel is starting to get more views so I hope that pushes it forward
Thank you @magnusharrison2715 !! Great to know that the videos hold-up to multiple viewings. I appreciate you watching, letting me know how much you enjoy my work and your advice to make the channel stronger.
I'm definitely held back from more frequent content by my 9-to5 job. It's too bad what I love doing doesn't pay the bills, but I'm sure most creators would say the same thing. Well ... 99.9% of us anyway. I am still committed to being more active, and most importantly, "edutaining" (actual word!) viewers with something they won't find elsewhere.
What a nice message at the end. And more oil museum videos! Oil Museum Girl must've been a pretty senior employee there to know how to run everything.
Well, oil museum girl was at the end of her summer job, so she pretty much knew everything. Regarding visitors arriving for a tour, she gave us some sage insight, "The trick is to hide. Make it look like no one's here. It's like hiding from a dinosaur in Jurassic Park."
@@65scribe I'll remember that if I go to the oil museum! Are you going to send her a link to your channel? And I'm sorry for your loss. I was scrolling through the comments and saw why this episode is dedicated to your mom.
That is an amazing setup, Shamus! Quite a wide selection of great games. You could even play Halo 1 and Marathon! Thanks for the message.
So so so happy there is a new video. I miss the oldschool sound of the voice though
I agree! That’s great you can preserve something from that era as something fully modern day-functional. Well done!
Thanks for the great video! For years I've been keeping ISOs of the last versions of Leopard and Xcode sitting around just waiting for me to finally grab one of these machines and do some [incredibly inefficient] 64-bit programming with.
Thanks for the video, finally had time to watch it.. have a great summer.
I'm glad to hear it! The video is a bit long, so it's understandable that you just finished it now. You have a great summer, too!
It's an hour long! An hour! You've really outdone yourself.
I wasn’t trying for an time in particular, that’s just where it ended up. Made it take longer, of course.
Here is the rough script (since at least YOU didn't find it boring - thank you):
" To run that 30” display, you were required to buy it with the nvidea 6800 ultra… a long card which had 2 special DVI ports to drive two 30” monitors. it also had 256MB of RAM and occupies the adjacent PCI slot.
(I don’t know/this is confusing me)
In the 4th generation everything went nvidea. The AGP slot was gone The card just plugged into the fastest pci express slot. The 16x. Adc was now absent on all the cards. The
6600LE in the low end had 128MB of RAM where the higher models had the full 6600 with 256MB ram.
The G5 video cards and new Mac Pro video cards are not transferable between systems, even though they both use PCIexpress, "
I hope that helps!
I upvoted this before I even watched it. I knew it was going to be great!
I’m happy to hear you trusted my quality that much! Thanks for the upvote!
@@65scribe By the way, which episode was it?
