Congrats! You all are the first creators who recognize that Malcolm X was the first person at the beginning of this song. I have watched at least 25 reactions to this song that I LOVE and no other creator knew the information. You have gained a new subscriber
There was an interview with the band and they wanted Martin Luther King's "Free at Last" speech but the family said no. Malcolm Xs daughter was a fan and when she was approached she agreed. It kind of works far better with that intro.
This song was one of my favorites and I think as I grew up I could peel it's meaning like an onion. The beat draws you in and then the message. It also reminds me the saying "absolute power corrupts absolutely" a short version of this: Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely” is a famous quote attributed to the 19th century English historian, politician, and writer, Lord Acton: Acton wrote this in 1887 in a letter to Bishop Creighton while discussing the moral issues of writing history about the Inquisition. The quote is interpreted to mean that the more power someone has, the more their sense of morality is weakened. Acton believed that unchecked power poses the greatest threat to human freedom. He also believed that the same moral standards should apply to all people, including political and religious leaders
Vernon Reid is listed in Rolling Stone`s magazines top 50 Greatest all time Guitarists! Corey Glover`s Vocals are Stellar! "Open Letter to a Landlord" next please!
Great song. Great lyrics, so timely now, like a shovel to the head. Great band, deep catalog. Vernon Reid, the guitarist, was a killer player, kind of amazing really. He was interested in all styles of music, even punk and free jazz, so his stuff can wander thru a lot places.
These guys were great in concert, very high energy, although it is unsettling to think that not only was the message of this song relevant then, it is painfully, blatantly even more relevant today in our current 'situation' in the U.S.
That is always going to be true for one half of the population or the other at any time - right hates left, left hates right. Only an awakened few see where the real truth lies.
saw these live in their prime on the times up tour, they were something else.check out "memories can't wait(best talking heads cover ever),middle man, funny vibe, type etc what a band
I’m so glad you got the base message of this son, because this fits in to what we are dealing with today for sure, but you can’t deny that they are killing it and rocking it solidly.👍💯❤️
It was simply the most important song of the 1980s, and, in spite of all the love songs, the one with the most universal message that works in any era. They exploded on to the scene... ... and then were never heard from again. But if you are only going to be known for making one statement... What a statement! 💥
Hey guys!! Not only rock. They play also Funk, jazz, blues. I saw them live and they are amazing!!!! I'm from Argentina. I talked with the bass player and he told me that he is an Astor Piazzolla's big fan. Astor(R.I.P) was the best tango player ever. And he was from my city. Mar del Plata!!!
Love the reaction you guys! This song deserves much more attention. It's gritty, powerful and contains a message that all of us should reflect on. Mussolini, Ghandi, Stalin, Kennedy...? What crazy juxtaposition.
Saw them in '89 opening up for the Rolling Stones! We had driven up to Alpine Valley in Wisconsin from our hometown, Chicago. Great concert and they were terrific!
Seriously guys... best reaction of the year! Or at least it's my favorite. Introverted people wouldn't be introverted if most couples walking around were like you. Maybe they are I guess introverts wouldn't know 😅
The Doors. Creedance Clearwater Revival. Aerosmith. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. The Ramones. The E Street Band. Metallica. Alice in Chains...all American Rock Bands. So...
@@f.murphy8340 They're not all as heavy, should have said The Best Heavy Rock band to come out of the US, personally, I prefer them over Metallica and Alice in Chains, but if we all liked the same thing it would be a boring world, wouldn't it?
Common sense and critical thinking can prevent individuals from falling under the spell. But also true free speech to call anyone out and a true impartial media who seek out and report facts instead of pushing an agenda in the name of thinking their role is to change the world.
Excellent reaction!!! Think for yourself about things!!! Research about people and things!!! Only you can free yourself from the cult of personalities!
I remember a reaction video from a few years ago (that has been deleted due to the backlash in the comments) where the people who reacted were fine with the song lyrics until it name dropped their "sacred cow" (pun intended) : they totally demonstrated the validity of the lyrics by being offended and vindictive. They were lacking so much self awareness they decided to upload this reaction just to be bashed to oblivion.
3:30 sure did speak truth, sweetie..And it's still goin' on today in politics! I've noted that from the jump, this song sounds, like you said, angry. The solo, even angrier, reminds of a riot..but politicians all over the world have failed us..Mankind has a lot to be angry at them for. Fun watching you guys rock out like kids!
It’s SO amazing but SO sad that two people not from the US could not only pinpoint it was Malcolm speaking, but what YEAR the speech was from. Because 99% of US folks couldn’t even tell you it was X, I don’t think. Maybe 95%. But kudos to you both for being well read and informed on US history. Time has been kinder to Malcolm, when he spoke our government almost literally thought of him as a terrorist.
Love the tone of Vernon Reid. In the guitar world he is respected by many of his peers and great guitarists however in the public world he doesn't get the respect he deserves.
That would be a group called Death... Also Bad Brains, and Fishbone also were black groups that were either exclusively heavy metal or played heavy metal rock before Living Colour... And of course, Jimi Hendrix!
I first became aware of the singer Corey Glover from the war movie Platoon. His role wasnt huge but he really stood out. In the last big battle of the movie you really believe he was in fear for his life. As good an actor as he is a singer
@rickward460 rock n roll brother 💪as a 20 something in late 80s early 90s best time to be mucking about playing guitar 🎸 and when I heard this song so did my neighbor 😉🤣 Stevie Ray is my guitar god but Vernon is way up there also🙃✌️

That might be the best reaction I've seen to this song.
Agree! They totally understood...more completely than many others I've seen.
I just saw Living Colour this past August 8th. They still rock hard and Cory's voice is as crisp and clear as it was when this song was released.
So glad you found Living Colour! Such a fantastic band. Open Letter to a Landlord is another incredible song.
The whole album is outstanding, but Open Letter to a Landlord is my favourite track for sure, brilliant stuff!

Still one of my all time favorite songs. Definitely in my top 50 of all time. These dudes ROCKED.
Greatest rock and roll song of all time
The singer - Corey Glover - has a new project called Sonic Universe which is killer! Check out the song "It Is What It Is"
love the comments about the guitar having something to say and wanting to be heard.
This whole band rocks and Vernon is a beast on the guitar! Great Reaction ✌🏻❤️🇺🇸

Great reaction ❤ Let's vote for freedom 😊 blue 💙
Crazy great musicians killing it as one unified band. "Desperate People" from the same album is a viciously great rocker.
You both really got the true meaning of the song. Great job!
Corey Glover was also in the movie Platoon.
Love you guys. This was a great choice. You need to do more of them.
One of the best guitar solo ever! I LOVE IT!
Excellent reaction!!
Saw them in '89 opening up for the Rolling Stones! We had driven up to Alpine Valley in Wisconsin from our hometown, Chicago. Great concert and they were terrific!
One of my favorite bands. I had a lot of great times seeing them live.
I have to say that I love how genuine your reaction is when you two just "rock out".
Such a great song and even more applicable today than when it was released
Excellent reaction! Can’t wait to see you do more from this band!
❤:lovely reaction one of the best ofL.C.
I saw them live when this album came out! I lost my voice for a week. Veron Reid is the guitar player. He's a genius. Good choice.
Such a banger and love the meaning! ❤
My favorite line is "Only you can save YOU!" ❤ Living Color was the truth......literally! They're still together, and on tour right now!
only you can set you free
This song is fire🔥 great pick. The smiles on your faces tells me you enjoyed it❣️

I think Living Colour are the best rock band to come out of America.

Nice heavy song, one of my favourite.
GREAT REACTION!!!! I watched this twice! =8-D
Good song :D I used to listen to this around the same time as Ice-T's band Bodycount.

I believe this written for Trump
I never heard anybody describe it like that but that’s perfect - the guitar is angry and will be heard - awesome description
THE ONLY THING WE HAVE TO FEAR IS FEAR ITSELF!!!!! WHAT A WAY TO END THIS SONG HUH?

What a ride! I just love this song and the message. I was fortunate enough to see them in the early 90s. THEY ROCK!
i believe the first all- black heavy metal band !

great song. Please do Holdin on to Yesterday by Ambrosia
You need to see the entrance of Cm punk by this theme of cult of personality !
We're like sheep. We have to have that leader telling us what to do.
Love you guys. Still waiting for Jackson Browne's "Running On Empty". 😁
I was wondering when you'd get around to this one. One of my favs. Not bad, eh?

Singer Corey Glover played Francis in Platoon
CM Punk approves.
I first became aware of the singer Corey Glover from the war movie Platoon. His role wasnt huge but he really stood out. In the last big battle of the movie you really believe he was in fear for his life. As good an actor as he is a singer
