Any U.S. based shift to zero emissions in the time necessary to prevent catastrophic climate change must be facilitated by a nationally-owned underground HVDC transmission grid with FERC mandating open market access to midwest and southwest renewable generation sources to sell into the PJM. Any other effort will be impossible due to the overwhelming buildout and storage costs.
This must be done using federal highway easements instead of overland attempts to seize land through eminent domain (which the current supreme court will certainly quash).
@@maunaowakea777 Yes! One of the Clean Energy for Biden proposals is the "NextGen Highways" to run HVDC, 5G, and broadband Internet cable along federal interstate highways. Also the SOO Green HVDC Link between Iowa and Illinois will run a good portion of its distance along the Canadian Pacific Railway. Both highways and rail lines provide opportunities for running transmission and will also make it easier to electrify new and existing rail.
