I rehoused four spiders last night. Used your cup and cardboard technique. One of them was a juvenile Phormingochilus sp. rufus that would zip up through the hole in the cardboard, into the cup...zip around lightning speed several times...and zip! back into the container. Ugh! Twice! Third time I was able to get the cup off of the hole and move her to her new enclosure. Anyhow, watching your videos has helped me think what things can I do to make this more safe for both the spider and myself. Thank you!

Thanks for another great video! I'm not one for pet shop rescues in general (and to be fair most of the places around us here in the UK are not too bad), but I stumbled upon a young adult female last week and she seemed totally miserable in her enclosure, that was placed at a very busy spot. Long story short, I picked her up and she's been an absolute pleasure. She's shy for sure, but the rehousing went like a charm, she's eaten well and I caught her sitting out this morning. I've had mine for about 3 years now (bought from Jamie's as a sling) and have only seen it out of its burrow once. Very skittish, very fast. Lol Thanks so much for this video. I'll be rehousing mine soon and this was very helpful!

I was rehousing a 6" female O. vialoceopes to trade with a friend, and they were surprisingly calm and docile. I decided to take advantage of the situation and get some pictures. I put it on some cork bark and got some really nice pictures. While putting her in the catch cup, she instead decided to go around the cup and onto my hand. With my heart now racing, she was just sitting on my hand, I picked up my phone and snapped a pic. I then calmly got her into the cup. I don't usually handle, and definitely not old worlds, so this was quite the experience. However, I can now say I've handled the most docile singapore blue. 😂
I'm a new keeper I have watched all your care posts for all the species I own all though I'm worried about winter and managing the cold here in Connecticut thanks for all the help

You're dead on sir vis a vis increased visibility being tied to security and enclosure decor, at least in my experience. I see almost all of my adult Phormingochilus and arboreal Ornithoctoninae sp every night because I make sure they have secure hides and that seems to give them confidence. It's a weird paradox where if you set them up so that you'll potentially never see them, then you have higher odds of actually seeing them. Stellar video, as always.

Another great video. I have a female violaceopes and I literally never see her. She was given to me by a friend who was getting out of the hobby. I put her in a similar enclosure & she burrowed under the cork tube. She's about the same size as yours and a stunning spider. Shame they are so shy & not out much

awesome video again Tom! I just rehoused my juvie O. Violaceopes and yes can confirm, crazy fast growth rate. I found personally, like yourself, if you take your time while rehousing them, they are very manageable. I haven't had an issue. As for the photosensitive portion. I'm using black cardstock on the outside of my enclosure on 2 sides (corner) so I can remove them and peek in on her once in a while, it's working great and she feels very secure back there. Thanks again and keep up the great work!
Hey, Mats! yeah, the key seems to be to take your time and to not freak out. I currently have mine on shelves with the wall behind them so the back and sides are blacked out. Great idea!
Great video Tom,I have a AF the last molt was 9',when I first got her I never saw her for a long time.in recent months she has been out all day all night.she mostly sits on the floor and on accation she sits on her cork bark.i find it strange why she is out all the time.im not complaining though.she is a big girl.i would say she is shy.never seen any defensive behaviour from her.thanks for sharing.

Great vid and I love when you cover this species in general as we are at similar growth stages. I am actually preparing to rehouse into the same 12x18 Exo. As for the Tinker lids, I also have a bunch of them and had a custom order done for my 18x24 Exo. I think that they now sell them. My Singapore is also one of my most docile and shy specimens in my collection. I think that some of the species are just adaptable and end up in places that offer an opportunity for security and access to play. OBTs are definitely an adaptable species, as some are found in burrows and webbed dens as well. They are definitely not exclusively arboreal in the wild.

I've kept and lost 2 O. violaceopes already, my 1st one matures to a male in just a year and finally died 6 months later. My 2nd one turned out to a female which I get excited about but that excitement didn't last long since CoVid happened and lockdowns were imposed. I left all of my animals on my apartment and lost a bunch of Ts and scorps including my O. violaceopes which was heavily infected by mites and my 2 colony of H. longimanus but 1 individual managed to survive, I've lost a total a 16 individual. But I'm not giving up on getting one Sg Blue in the near future since it's one of my favorite species alongside P. metallica.
The only T I've ever owned was a Singapore blue. It was an impulse buy at a reptile show back around 2005. Not a lot of info was out on them. It was about 7-8". Unfortunately with lack of info I only had it for about a year before it pass during a molt
I use the clay balls for my T. Stirmi and my O. Violaceopes exclusively. I find it helps to maintain that moisture level. I don't have any pokies yet, but I will be using the same set up.

Hi Tom! I have a serious but a silly looking question - do you think these guys would change their behavior if you'd put a tiny sticker over their eyes? Since they (pokies and similar arboreals included) are so photosensitive and run away from any kind of sudden light, making it hard to even see them properly, not to mention taking photos with a flash, do you think this might help get over it? I mean its not like it will hurt them in any way or decrease their hunting abilities since they don't use their eyes primarily for catching prey, and they will just remove it after next molt finishing "the experiment". I was thinking a pair of googly eyes just so it gives them some character but as I sad, a tape is also an option. And just to add a disclaimer - I don't consider this playing with tarantulas just for the sake of fun and I would never do something that would hurt them! This would be more of a scientific approach to see whether or not they would spend more time in the open if their eyes were covered. The only problem would be how to apply the cover, hah..? I would really appreciate your thoughts on this. Thanks for the answer in advance!
Hi, Nikola! Despite not being recognized as having great vision, I certainly wouldn't want to essentially deprive one of its senses. I keep or have kept about 140 species, and I've only had a handful that I would consider shy and potentially photo sensitive. Most will come out at some point, even when the lights are on. My whole goal with the tarantulas is to allow them to feel comfortable and secure, so I have no problem waiting to eventually catch one out in the open. Would blindfolding one possibly lead it to be out in the open more? I guess that it's possible. Many will come out shortly after the lights go off for the evening, so I would imagine that if they couldn't see at all, they would just assume that it was dark all of the time and not be so shy. So, it could have an effect on their behavior, but I'd still feel bad blindfolding one. haha
I bought a Brachypelma Emilia sling (1/4") as well as 3 other species of New World slings as my first T's back in January. I've only seen the Emilia twice since then and she's only eaten two tiny mealworms since. The last I saw her, she did appear a tiny bit bigger but still super tiny. She may have molted but not sure as she's so tiny and the 'molt' was hard to distinguish from substrate. The three other sling species have molted a few times, ate much more and are noticeably larger. Is the Emilia's behavior relatively 'normal' and is there anything to worry about?

A few months ago I wanted to buy a simply and my girlfriend asked why. I told her I needed it for a catch cup because Tom uses them and they seem convenient lol. Gorgeous girl by the way, sucks she's so elusive. Although, besides the video thing I'm sure it makes seeing them that much more special. Also, dumb question but I've watched your pokie rehouse videos many times and you always talk about leaving them if they're threat posing and come back to it. My Regalis went great, but my Ornata is angry everytime I try. I assume I'm going to have to just deal with it and go for it? I'm hoping she'll be at least a bit more calm once she has a better home, the one she came in only has one place to hide.
Hello, Zulema! Bahahaha That is amazing! All joking aside, they really do work great for getting them out of corners! Thank you! I agree that when you finally see them, it makes it all worth while. As for the rehousing, if she is always threat posturing, I would carefully cup her (if they are threat posturing, they are usually choosing to stand their ground), move her into the new enclosure, and leave the cup in with her. Don't even bother trying to get it out. Just set it in there, remove the cardboard (carefully!), and let her come out on her own.
Just wondering, is there a benefit to feeding three or four crickets at once each week compared to feeding one cricket at a time three or four times a week?
Hi, Gillian! Probably not. It's just when you have 200+ tarantulas, feeding them all every other day would be a full time job. haha Honestly, most folks do weekly as, in the wild, they don't always find food every day.

Hey, Gav! I heard that as well. They ARE considered to be one of the largest arboreals. That said, I think that 21-23 cm is much more likely. Can ones get larger than that? I'm sure, but it's not that common. The larges one that I've personally seen photos of was around 22cm.
Hi tom, not sure if you still respond to comments here but how come you phased out of using peat moss? I've only been using it recently since all of the top soil near me has been extremely caked and muddy, and I've had mold issues with cocoa fiber. I'm wondering if I should stop using it?
Of course I will. :) I've had a lot of people email and message me with how destructive the harvesting of it is to the environment. I'm doing research now to see if the stuff we get from Canada is any better. It works great for tarantulas, but I certainly don't want to be responsible for destroying peat bogs for my T dirt.
Hello, Knight Raven! I have around 200 tarantulas right now. For feedings, I start on one side of the room and work my way all across. It takes a few days and about 4 hours total. I love it, though, so it's not a chore for me.
Hi, Crystal! You could, but it would make it harder for you to see the spider when maneuvering it out of the cup and it would make the spider more reluctant to leave.
I was thinking for flightier spiders, especially the teleporting variety, I’d rather known they’re in the bottle and deal with getting them out than have them take off like a rocket. I have to rehouse my first P regalis and P gigas tonight so am looking up all the tips I can.
@@crystalbrewster5265 I've honestly never had one fly out at me. The best thing about the bottles is that they block the air current, which is a bigger issue than light. When they get scrunched up in the top, they feel quite secure.
Off topic but i just wanted to let you know about my rosehair tarantula i had spoken to you about her about a year ago i reported that she had tremendous growth for me molting 3 times in the first 6 months ive had her and nothing has changed shes about a year and a half two years old tops and is now over 3 inches id like to send you some pics of her all of my spiders have grown incredibly fast and im curious to your thoughts on this
My house gets down to 42f at night in the winter and I've had sooo much crap from ppl on tarantula groups for saying I need to heat my enclosures in winter. More that a few have been really rude an say I'm going to kill my t's but even after I explain they just dont get that not heating them is almost like putting them in the fridge ovetnight🥶

I know that many of the North American species are exposed to low temperatures, but most hid in burrows that are deep enough to be in the 60s even when the outside temps are chilly. Some of the tarantulas that we keep as fossorial are actually an arboreal. I saw a video of OBTs in the wild and they in the hole on the trees.
I think that some of the species are just adaptable and end up in places that offer an opportunity for security and access to play. OBTs are definitely an adaptable species, as some are found in burrows and webbed dens as well. They are definitely not exclusively arboreal in the wild.

I've kept and lost 2 O. violaceopes already, my 1st one matures to a male in just a year and finally died 6 months later. My 2nd one turned out to a female which I get excited about but that excitement didn't last long since CoVid happened and lockdowns were imposed. I left all of my animals on my apartment and lost a bunch of Ts and scorps including my O. violaceopes which was heavily infected by mites and my 2 colony of H. longimanus but 1 individual managed to survive, I've lost a total a 16 individual. But I'm not giving up on getting one Sg Blue in the near future since it's one of my favorite species alongside P. metallica.

The only T I've ever owned was a Singapore blue. It was an impulse buy at a reptile show back around 2005. Not a lot of info was out on them. It was about 7-8". Unfortunately with lack of info I only had it for about a year before it pass during a molt

Hydro clay balls work wonders for moisture dependant species. I have some in the exact same enclosure you have for my Gooty Sapphire.
Hey, Chris! I've used something similar in other enclosures. I just have a lot of fossorial species, so I got used to not using them.
I use the clay balls for my T. Stirmi and my O. Violaceopes exclusively. I find it helps to maintain that moisture level. I don't have any pokies yet, but I will be using the same set up.

Hi Tom! I have a serious but a silly looking question - do you think these guys would change their behavior if you'd put a tiny sticker over their eyes? Since they (pokies and similar arboreals included) are so photosensitive and run away from any kind of sudden light, making it hard to even see them properly, not to mention taking photos with a flash, do you think this might help get over it? I mean its not like it will hurt them in any way or decrease their hunting abilities since they don't use their eyes primarily for catching prey, and they will just remove it after next molt finishing "the experiment". I was thinking a pair of googly eyes just so it gives them some character but as I sad, a tape is also an option. And just to add a disclaimer - I don't consider this playing with tarantulas just for the sake of fun and I would never do something that would hurt them! This would be more of a scientific approach to see whether or not they would spend more time in the open if their eyes were covered. The only problem would be how to apply the cover, hah..? I would really appreciate your thoughts on this. Thanks for the answer in advance!
Hi, Nikola! Despite not being recognized as having great vision, I certainly wouldn't want to essentially deprive one of its senses. I keep or have kept about 140 species, and I've only had a handful that I would consider shy and potentially photo sensitive. Most will come out at some point, even when the lights are on. My whole goal with the tarantulas is to allow them to feel comfortable and secure, so I have no problem waiting to eventually catch one out in the open. Would blindfolding one possibly lead it to be out in the open more? I guess that it's possible. Many will come out shortly after the lights go off for the evening, so I would imagine that if they couldn't see at all, they would just assume that it was dark all of the time and not be so shy. So, it could have an effect on their behavior, but I'd still feel bad blindfolding one. haha
I bought a Brachypelma Emilia sling (1/4") as well as 3 other species of New World slings as my first T's back in January. I've only seen the Emilia twice since then and she's only eaten two tiny mealworms since. The last I saw her, she did appear a tiny bit bigger but still super tiny. She may have molted but not sure as she's so tiny and the 'molt' was hard to distinguish from substrate. The three other sling species have molted a few times, ate much more and are noticeably larger. Is the Emilia's behavior relatively 'normal' and is there anything to worry about?
Hello! Yes, that sounds like normal behavior. The B. emila can be one of the slower growing tarantulas. Mine was also quite slow growing overall.

A few months ago I wanted to buy a simply and my girlfriend asked why. I told her I needed it for a catch cup because Tom uses them and they seem convenient lol.

As for the rehousing, if she is always threat posturing, I would carefully cup her (if they are threat posturing, they are usually choosing to stand their ground), move her into the new enclosure, and leave the cup in with her. Don't even bother trying to get it out. Just set it in there, remove the cardboard (carefully!), and let her come out on her own.

Hey, Gav! I heard that as well. They ARE considered to be one of the largest arboreals. That said, I think that 21-23 cm is much more likely. Can ones get larger than that? I'm sure, but it's not that common. The larges one that I've personally seen photos of was around 22cm.

Hi tom, not sure if you still respond to comments here but how come you phased out of using peat moss? I've only been using it recently since all of the top soil near me has been extremely caked and muddy, and I've had mold issues with cocoa fiber. I'm wondering if I should stop using it?
Of course I will. :) I've had a lot of people email and message me with how destructive the harvesting of it is to the environment. I'm doing research now to see if the stuff we get from Canada is any better. It works great for tarantulas, but I certainly don't want to be responsible for destroying peat bogs for my T dirt.

Hello, Knight Raven! I have around 200 tarantulas right now. For feedings, I start on one side of the room and work my way all across. It takes a few days and about 4 hours total. I love it, though, so it's not a chore for me.
Could you paint the neck of the bottle so when they run in their they feel more secure?
Hi, Crystal! You could, but it would make it harder for you to see the spider when maneuvering it out of the cup and it would make the spider more reluctant to leave.
I was thinking for flightier spiders, especially the teleporting variety, I’d rather known they’re in the bottle and deal with getting them out than have them take off like a rocket.
I have to rehouse my first P regalis and P gigas tonight so am looking up all the tips I can.
@@crystalbrewster5265 I've honestly never had one fly out at me. The best thing about the bottles is that they block the air current, which is a bigger issue than light. When they get scrunched up in the top, they feel quite secure.

My house gets down to 42f at night in the winter and I've had sooo much crap from ppl on tarantula groups for saying I need to heat my enclosures in winter. More that a few have been really rude an say I'm going to kill my t's but even after I explain they just dont get that not heating them is almost like putting them in the fridge ovetnight🥶

I know that many of the North American species are exposed to low temperatures, but most hid in burrows that are deep enough to be in the 60s even when the outside temps are chilly.
