With the African fashion industry estimated to be worth $31bn, and the global fashion industry estimated to be worth $2.5 trillion, KAYABiz host Gugulethu Mfuphi chats to the founder of local luxury fashion brand, Laduma Ngxokolo to discuss the untapped potential that fashion and the creative industries at large can represent for Africa.
About Maxhosa Africa:
MAXHOSA AFRICA is a South African knitwear brand founded in 2012 by Laduma Ngxokolo. This was with desire to explore knitwear design solutions that would be suitable for amakrwala (Xhosa initiates). His initial vision was to create a modern Xhosa-inspired knitwear collection that would be suitable for this market. As a person who has undergone the process, Laduma felt that he had to develop premium knitwear that celebrates traditional Xhosa aesthetics.

I set foot in a MaXhosa Store for the first time in November 2023 at OR Tambo Airport. What an experience! So enamoured was I by my purchases, I actually forgot my hand luggage in the store. Your phenomenal member of staff @stylish_cambino ran around looking for me. When he found me, about 30 minutes later, I hadn’t even realised that I had forgotten my hand luggage. 🙈
