Getting grabbed by the neck of his father in a small scuffle that ended with by Vincent’s account ended with “There was a lot of blood” is less petty as he was already afraid of his father that was the spark. It would also be even more difficult to redeem him with the limited time they had in the series.
The way Vincent acts around him in the intro… that 24/7 alone is enough to make a kid run and believe he’ll be better off on his own. We see BenCum the actor, who we “like”, but Vincent is a piece of work. At the end he’s more like a modern movie father figure of course.

My take...it's a show that is TRYING to be deeper than it is. Everything felt like someone who has Anti Social Personality Disorder and is trying to fein emotions to fit in.
Binged the show. I’m not mixed feelings. Here’s my take aways: cumberbatch does a great job with the role. I can see why he took it. Overall it feels very much Hollywood in this current moment. A very diverse cast, with a lot of people telling us to do better. Themes of homeless people being taken advantage of. Mainly by the cops and the wealthy. A few things I didn’t get, they start off and the father and son appear to be in a good relationship. He has him with him at his job. He’s distracted but is still making time for him. The home life seems strained and the father has issues with the mom. The mom seems distracted at first and is portrayed as not into her son at all. In fact, the father (who has to go to work) tries to make his son breakfast and is rebuffed. The father and mother fight and the son walks off to school. The mother (who never seems to have a job) then places it on the father to have failed the son for not taking him to school. (This must be a daily task of his if it’s an expectation?). But she does have enough time to have her boyfriend over and bang him. And yet the show continues over multiple episodes to paint the father as the toxic person of the family and someone that the son runs from. ok… On one hand, it makes for a compelling narrative for cunberbunch to explore. On the other hand it feels like lazy Hollywood writing these days. Where white male figures are the go to punching bag, and doubly so if they’re a father. The father goes through a very destructive turn of events and comes out the other side with a new relationship with his son. Meanwhile, the mother got off without any ramifications or explanation for her behaviors and it’s mostly written that she was driven away by the toxicity of the husband. Again, fairly typical of recent Hollywood. Toss in all the typical Hollywood talking points and it gets burdened down with preaching. Literally several episodes with the “do better” theme. Overall, it’s still a good show, but very heavy handed and I wonder if it will age well in several years when the male bashing of Hollywood turns the corner and it’s viewed more critically than now.
It is mentioned multiple times that the mother is a teacher. When Vincent and Edgar arrive home she states she was just finishing up grading papers and her having students is mentioned on at least two other occasions. Perhaps your clear personal bias made you overlook this.

I recognized a subplot of the 1927 movie Metropolis, where there is a growing tension between the city and the underground city and the son of a higher up gets caught in the middle. Also ends with a flood in the underground parts.
One subtle thing that might be missed is the way everyone called Ledroit "Mickey". I kept yelling for people to stop calling that grown man Mickey. It is so disrespectful and shows a subconscious level to where they viewed him. And he never corrected anyone. It was like he was also stuck in a childlike self identity. Then at the very end when he solved the case and all involved were arrested for the underground child sex ring, he called himself "Michael". I was just like...finally...thank goodness. Thanks for the effective review Of a complex story - With no spoilers! In Eric, I saw the theme of homelessness In so many different characters and groups of people. First, in Cumberbatch’s character - essentially orphaned in a powerhouse family. The detective, In the immediacy of grief, given one month to live in the apartment belonging to the man who loved. The mole people In 80s NYC, existing underground. The rootless partiers In the night club, Lux. The child who runs away from his crumbling home. Homelessness Manufactured by shame and held in place by addiction of one sort or another. Salvation provided by resolute, creative action of one sort and another. The big and really crucial missing piece from the salvation story was any connection to God. It’s an awfully good series.
