I guess he should have been more direct. "I don't want to go to costco. I want us to go alone." It was respectful of him not to press the situation and to give her space to get out of it but that's exactly what she did. Then again, how much fun would it have been to drag her alone on a date? I think he understood perfectly well at the end how she felt.... so his indirect approach wasn't a total loss.
