I have a much much different story and perspective on why I left the church...why I started my journey of getting out. I love the Lusks'! They are so positive and encouraging. I appreciate them and you taking so much time with this interview. You got the ENTIRE story. Thank you! I would love to have an update once Jared and Gwen go through their church court.

This interview enlarged my heart. Thank you all for being willing to discuss this difficult time in your lives. Your words expand my mind as I ponder your lived experience and the WILL you had to be true to your thoughts and feelings. Any time that people are made to feel "other", any time that judgment and shaming blow towards the questioning mind, any time that lines of communications are shut down along with mantra fed minds, the divisiveness that ensues is always tragic. And it goes on, and will go on until people get connected to their true self with the expansive ingredient of LOVE as this family so well stated.

I have not finished listening to this. I just barely started listening to these podcasts when I heard John on the Scientology podcast with Mike and Leah.
I didn’t know about anything about this podcast or program etc.
I hope this family is doing well. I am about 30 mins in and you are talking about how Jared is standing for lgbtq, hurt kids (not sure I can say csam), poc, etc. and is going to the discipline board but this should be a badge of honor. I say he is be responsible and accountable in standing for the right things in life. Where is the churches accountability? They talk about being held accountable! So I want to call them out and ask them where they are in all this? Where are they when a child is hurt? Why is it that we are taught to go to our church leaders instead of police? Where are they when it really counts?
These two are more worthy than many people in the church.

So much truth in this episode. Yes God will never keep families apart in the after life. I myself will remove my name from the records of the church.
Jared and Gwen, God wants us to be good people, simple, and he will save you. By going to: relief society; priesthood; temple activity; doing genealogy, the church preaches that you will be saved. The thing is you are saving yourselves and there is no need for Christ. What happen to, believe in me and you will have eternal life? Some would say that you need to have works but shouldn’t it be belief in Christ first and listen to his admonition to doing good by having charity and God will take care the rest. The gospel is simply. The Mormon ( oops the church frown on the use of that word) Church makes it too complicated. We cannot save ourselves. Thanks John and especially the wonderful Lusk family🌺 for sharing. God loves us all unconditionally. 🙏

    Wonderful family.
I want to comment on the statement John made where the church hurt this family so much. In the church where I grew up, the bible states that whatever you are doing to others, you are doing to Christ, as we are ALL members of the body of Christ.
It seems to me that it is the Mormon Church that is doing the sinning.
In 1st grade catechism the first page asked us "who is GOD? " The answer was "GOD" is love.
This family has it right.... God is love and their unconditional love is manifesting the truth..
Watch some of the NDE experiences, everyone who comes back from that experience reports that all they felt on the other side was love and acceptance.

This series of podcasts with former Bishops and their families that have left the church has been so enlightening. I wonder how long till there are Stake Presidents that have excommunicated people coming on the podcast. It would be interesting to see A) what they were thinking at the time and B) how is the faith transition of a person that has cut off other "apostates" different as a result of having been on both sides of the table.

Your story was riveting. Thank you so much for sharing. Especially your daughter for putting herself out there too. You are showing what family is really all about. I am so sad that the church feels like you have to be made an example of. But in a weird way, even them doing that will help other people see what a toxic religion and environment it can be and will feel empowered to make a move that could help their family.

I'm an ex Jehovah's witness and after I was out I also used to talk to the Morman Missionaries for a while and excepted the discussions. Once they started pressuring me to get baptized I felt compelled to research the religions background. That's when I found out Joseph Smith was a sexual predator and asked a married women to divorce her husband and merry him. That is a huge red flag for me so I never joined the church. The fact that I could go online and reasearch any religion helped me eventually investigate the JW religion too. I recommend everyone do that before they join end up in a cult they have a hard time breaking free from.

Being comfortable with ambiguity and fully embracing this crazy glorious mystery that we call life is what sets me free.
People who run religions are always putting words into “gods” mouth. No questions are allowed cause an all knowing “god” always has the last word.
Certitude is the opposite of growth. Striving for perfection and keeping busy with busy work to reach an imaginary place after this one is the ultimate waste of life.
As an Ex Mormon waking up to my own humanity is what is real and meaningful to me. I don’t need the church hierarchy to set my moral compass.
Jumping through hoops and going from calling to calling to be worthy enough to “make it” to the next level of exaltation sounds like a video game. Just saying.
Thank you John and the Lusk family for your openness and honesty.
It’s sad the church can’t be as forthcoming.

    Gwen, you got off easy.
I graduated high school in 1975, from the number one school in the state of Utah.
There where two girls from my class. They where together for at least three years, people would tell me they where lesbians?
Personally I just thought it was some kind of a joke, since they didn't look like it?
Forward to my age of forty years plus? I was in Indiana, they recognized me, I couldn't even tell who they where. They looked so different, they where throwing fits at me, talking about high school? I went home, got out my yearbook and found thier pictures.
I showed that to the owner where they worked at, along with a few female employees, since they knew who I was. The owner fired three females that worked there, and one of her friends that worked in another place.
What they looked like? Both had dyed thier hair this cheap blond color, and looked like they hadn't sleep in three days. Since they looked as skinny as an eighteen year old, I now assume it was crack?
About six months ago, I was looking at a H.S. memorial page on Facebook. One of them was listed.
Her mother, father and three brothers all had death notices in the newspapers. Nowadays it is required to have an authentic death certificate to be listed. Basically they payed for a funeral plot, with an empty casket for her.
The loving mother, and family. With lots of church related activities listed.
On the good side? If you watch Chosen One. On UTube, he interviews street prostitutes, in Detroit's run down areas. Both looked like they would fit in.
Also letting your young teen daughters watch this? Type in penny, would stop them from doing anything.

I just don't see excommunication as an attempt to violate someone's right to speak freely. What organization (religious or otherwise) doesn't have the right to dis-fellowship, excommunicate, or distance themselves from a member of their organization that is speaking out against them? You still have the right to say whatever you want, that right has not been infringed upon just because you were excommunicated from the church or organization you are speaking out against. They cannot silence you, they can only prevent you calling yourself "a member" of their organization. And why would you want to? I don't understand why someone would want to (or be encouraged to) remain a member of an organization they have come to oppose, especially a religious organization that teaches, for truth, things they do not believe to be true. I'm not talking about going through the effort of making sure your name is removed, I never even knew that was a thing until a few years ago and have never had my name removed from church records, I just left and haven't been back and haven't considered myself a member for over 15 years now. I can understand why "reformers" might want to remain in a church they think would benefit from changes being made "from the inside," but in that case wouldn't we be talking about believers, not unbelievers? And we wouldn't be talking about changes so significant that they would completely alter the core doctrines of the church, right? (You couldn't remove "Christ," for example, and remain a "Christian" organization, any more than I think you could remove Joseph Smith from Mormonism and have it remain Mormon.) So there are limits to what a "reformation" can accomplish and remain within the boundaries of the already existing organization. And, Madison, you don't have to give up on a relationship with God and Jesus Christ just because Joseph Smith is a false prophet, though I know this is a problem that faces many who leave Mormonism, as Joseph Smith, rather than Jesus Christ, is the central figure to much of Mormonism and Mormon Doctrine. That said, I am also not suggesting that an exiting Mormon jump straight into Traditional Christianity, with its "turn or burn" message either. As I see it, agnosticism is better than some forms of Christianity. In fact rejection of a Moloch-like God would be the "Christ-like" thing to do, as that is not the God that Christ reveals to us. Good luck on your journey! Especially with the members of your family who remain faithful members of the church.

Yeah, breaking free of the monopoly that the leaders of the church have over our lives.....it’s exhilarating! It is amazing how much more love and understanding you have for your fellow man (or woman), when you are not told how you are to be.
We each have our own ‘free will’. It was not to be given over to others to do the thinking for us.
I truly feel that we have been manipulated into a cult to part with our money, time, and talents.....for those things to be used by the leaders at their discretion. And my gosh! When a church can control what underwear you wear! That says a LOT about the control they have over our minds! The underwear has free Masonic emblems on them....this is not good no matter how they spin it. And the pentagrams on the Temples....I’ve never heard of a good description of those, upside down or right side up! They are satanic....plain and simple.
I believe that the great delusion was these cults (including the LDS church), that have infiltrated our lives. I believe that people are beginning to be a part of the great awakening and sifting of the wheat from the tares.
By their fruits ye shall know them; the statistics bear out that the LDS church has the highest teen suicide rate.....the highest pornography addiction.....the highest number of depressed people......and the highest antidepressant usage. 👀

Wait...so the daughter basically says it's crazy that they'd be excommunicated and have taken away from them the "ordinances" or w/ever which they believe (they still believe that?!?!) will get them to heaven? Sorry, but for one to gain eternal life/heaven never *WAS* found in any "ordinance" or teaching by way of the Mormon church. I'm confused why she'd say that if the family has "checked out" of the church and no longer believes the heresy and falsehoods.*EDIT* Why even show up at some sort of a disciplinary meeting? I mean, you leave...you're gone...you do not choose to be under the teaching...you believe there is heresy in the movement, etc. I see no reason to go...let 'em do what they want to do. Wipe the dust off your feet, good riddance.

So I am wondering... if the church doesn't excommunicate the Lusk family on Sunday will they resume activity? It sounds like they are mad that they might be excommunicated but have also stated that they are done with the church anyway. I am sensing a pride issue. I know what pride feels like and it is awful and generally leads to great unhappiness. I am so sorry for all involved.

summer weather it is not s out pride it’s about having a right to believe how you feel and it’s about a personal relationship with God as no men should have the power to cut people off from their own family and friends by a group of men playing God. This is such typical Cult behavior we all should love and let live.

God I pray this family comes to know you through Christ Jesus! I share the same last name, and I was also raised Mormon. Both my parents were converts and are still active. I left the church when I was 17, got in to hard drugs for over 5 years in my 20's.. heroine, needles, I'll stop there. Christ came into my life after I gave up... I was born again and have never been the same. Jesus is real Lusk family, HE IS! Don't give up on the Lord. Pray and read The Bible, LDS doctrine ruins the Word through joseph smith and the book of mormon. My older brother was saved first... I thought he lost his mind when he told me he accepted Christ as his Saviour haha... we were both very anti Bible/Christian as a result of being raised Mormon. Please contact me.
