2. Barrie Barlow. The most underrated drummer of the past 50 years. Thick As A Brick, A Passion Play, Songs From The Wood His drumming on the track Minstrel In The Gallery is magnificent.
September 1976, Empire Theatre, Liverpool, UK - my first ever gig, Rainbow on stage and Cozy at the back pounding those drums. Not having been to a rock gig before (I was 15) and not knowing what to expect I was blown away by the show and was blinded at the end of Cozy's drum solo when his riser literally rose from the back of the stage to the front before a massive flash took everyone by surprise...loved it!!! Good choice, Pete.
Fantastic choice, Pete. The rest is in order: 2) Bill Ward Albums: Black Sabbath Paranoid Master of Reality Vol 4 Songs: Symptom of the Universe Rat Salad Children of the Grave Supernaut Hand of Doom Sweet Leaf War Pigs 2) Bill Ward 3) Cozy Powell 4) John Bonham 5) Bill Bruford 6) Carl Palmer 7) Clive Bunker 8) Ian Paice 9) Charlie Watts 10) Andy Parker 11) Clive Burr 12) Levon Helm 13) Jason Bonham 14) Keith Moon 15) Nick Mason 16) Nicko McBrain 17) Tommy Aldridge 18) Max Weinberg 19) John Panozzo 20) Doug Clifford 21) Joey Kramer 22) Carmine Appice 23) Vinny Appice 24) Alex Van Halen 25) Ginger Baker 26) Roger Taylor 27) Kenny Aronoff 28) Steve Smith 29) Dylan Sevey 30) Jeff Porcaro
2-Bill Ward The “Drummer” of Sabbath. The one who played the drums on those first 6 albums that are the origin of Heavy metal, doom, thrash, Stoner, etc etc I hope they can play together live once again. Ozzy, Tony, Geezer and Bill!! My Favorite 30 Drummers Of All Time7- 2-Bill Ward 3- Keith Moon 4- Charlie Watts 5- Nick Mason 6- Javier Martinez 7 -Ian Paice 8- Mich Mitchell 9- Nicko McBrain 10- Chad Smith 11- Ginger Baker 12- Stewart Copeland 13- Phil Collins 14- Dave Grohl 15- Stephen Perkins 16- Topper Headon 17-Black Amaya 18- Bill Bruford 19- Lars Ulrich 20- Dave Lombardo 21- Carl Palmer 22- Neil Peart 23- Ringo Starr 24- Tony Williams 25- Tony Allen 26- D.J. Fontana 27- Steven Adler 28- Moe Tucker 29- Gene Krupa 30- Vinnie Colaiuta
Neil Peart Probably the most influential drummer to me growing up. I wanted to be him, even down to the haircuts I thought I should get. I used to play along to every track from the debut through Roll the Bones. In high school, I performed part of his drum solo for the school jazz band concert, including the cowbell part. I loved the parts he constructed, how he arranged them, and how he looked when playing them. I loved playing along to: Cygnus X-1 Limelight Subdivisions Show Don’t Tell
Number 2 is a beast. There is footage on TH-cam of his band playing a gig in Paris in February 1970 and what he does to his kit is probably illegal in 34 states. Ladies and gentlemen. I give you Bill Ward. Monstrously heavy, as befitting a man who helped birth the genre of heavy metal. Like a lot of drummers in the early days of heavy rock/metal, Bill was influenced by jazz drummers - Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich are familiar names mentioned as influences to a lot of the drummers featured this month. Like others, such a Bonzo, Paice etc. Bill had a swing that gave Sabbath a feel few other metal bands have ever been able to capture. He's a major influence himself, on drummers who came later. From thrash to doom to death metal and black metal, they will all say Bill helped get them started. Recommendations? Well, on numerous occasions, I've called the first 4 Black Sabbath albums the "Magna Carta of heavy music". If you don't own copies of those 4 records, you can't really call yourself a metal head.

No.2…Mike Portnoy-Dream Theater and everything else on the planet. The best modern day drummer, with extreme accuracy and super technical precision. That’s why Portnoy is always playing in so many projects, because he’s diverse and can play all kinds of music. His best work is in Dream Theater, but I also like the work he did with Transatlantic. Panic Attack is one song I enjoy.
Nicko McBrain - Iron Maiden. Piece of Mind, Powerslave, Somewhere in Time. "Where Eagles Dare" "Powerslave" "The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner"

#2 for me is Steve Smith. Steve Smith is an incredible talent who has managed to play some pretty sick drum parts within the commercial successes of Journey, amongst many other projects he has been involved with from jazz to everything else. I have seen Steve many times in concert and I have had the pleasure of meeting him and seeing what he can doing person, I believe Steve has the most incredible four-way independence I have ever seen, it’s like he has an individual brain to control each limb.
Great drummer!! So much stuff you could pick!! My #2: Going with one of the best drummers ever who we sadly lost a few years ago. He joined this trio in the mid 70s and stayed with them til 2015 when he retired. Talking about the great Neal Peart from Rush!! Albums: 2112, Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures Song: YYZ

Hi Pete & everyone. Dave here. Terrific pick of Cozy - made my list earlier in the month. My pick today is DANNY SERAPHINE, long time drummer with Chicago. I was a huge fan in the early days, loving their unique take on jazz rock, and Danny's drumming was very much part of that sound. His colourful fills and beats were very much to the fore, and he adapted well to all the different musical styles the band attempted. Sacked in 1990, due to 'musical differences', he later set up California Transit Authority, playing early Chicago classics and original material. Albums (that I have). Chicago Transit Authority (1969). One of the first albums i bought. Danny is immense on tracks like Introduction and Questions 67 & 68. Chicago II (1970). Greater variety of styles, but Danny excels on the prog suite Ballet For A Girl In Buchanan, for example. Chicago VII (1974). The album that got me back into the band. I love Danny's stick-work on the jazz instrumentals Aire and Devil's Sweet. Showcase track: Manipulation from Chicago XIV, showing that the band could still rock on, after Terry Kath's tragic demise. Danny's pounding rock beat and Chris Pinnick's shredding guitar make it for me.
Pick #2: Keith Moon Antics like Gene Krupa on steroids (and a few other substances to boot), insane drum fills where they are not supposed to be...but miraculously they still fit. He was so OUT that he went full circle and was IN. My best analogy would be: Massive short circuit with electrical devices still working to the max. My number 1 rock oriented drummer of all time. 3. John Bonham 4. Bill Bruford 5. Buddy Rich 6. Neil Peart 7. Pierre Van der Linden 8. Phil Collins 9. John Weathers 10. Gene Krupa 11. Chris Slade 12. Ringo Starr 13. Louie Bellson 14. Cesar Zuiderwijk 15. Steve Gadd 16. Trilok Gurtu 17. Roger Taylor 18. Mel Pritchard 19. Carmine Appice 20. Stewart Copeland 21. Max Roach 22. Jon Hiseman 23. Carl Palmer 24. Steve Upton 25. Paice is still making classic music with Deep Purple right into the 21st century with this year's =1 album. Keep going, Ian...
#2 for me is Neil Elwood Peart. After hearing about the news of his death, I couldn’t listen to a Rush album in its entirety for about 6 months without getting emotional. HEMISPHERES MOVING PICTURES SIGNALS Performance: La Villa Strangiato

Hello everyone, hope your Thanksgiving celebrations went well - if relevant - as November draws (nearly) to a close and we reach the penultimate day of our lists of favourite drummers. My pick today is from a band that actually bears his name, although the purists would argue that his brother was probably a little more responsible for the band's success... ALEX (of) VAN HALEN Eddie was, of course, always the musical focal point of VH, but Alex's talent as a drummer - alongside his equally gifted partner in rhythm Michael Anthony on bass - has often been under-appreciated when the band's success is looked at, and those early VH albums in particular are my personal favourites. However, my 3 album choices are... VH I 1984 For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge ...and my track of choice is: "Unchained" from Fair Warning See you all tomorrow for the final pick, my Honourable Mentions AND a special "Inspiration" award...
I would have said Rising, Headless Cross, and of course...Long Live Rock and Roll, c'mon, Kill the King, Lady of the Lake, Gates of effing Babylon? I also love the forgotten song, The Shed(subtle), that riff kills, and the stuttery drums are perfect. Favorite performance is Kill the King, though. Cheers!🤘
#2 Vinnie colaiuta Jing Chi, live at Yoshi's Frank Zappa, Joe's Garage Still,Tony Banks Amongst many others. Performance name any. But for this exercise. From the live at Yoshi's album The Hong Kong Incident
2) Keith Moon (The Who) Favorite Albums: Live At Leeds My Generation Tommy Favorite Performance: "Dogs Part Two" 2) Keith Moon 3) John Bonham 4) Ringo Starr 5) Ian Paice 6) Neil Peart 7) Mike Portnoy 8) Danny Seraphine 9) Hal Blaine 10) Benny Benjamin, Richard "Pistol" Allen & Uriel Jones 11) John Densmore 12) Mick Avory 13) Bill Bruford 14) Bill Ward 15) Jim Gordon 16) Russ Kunkel 17) Levon Helm 18) Ginger Baker 19) Micky Waller 20) Don Brewer 21) Michael Shrieve 22) Max Weinberg 23) Bobby Caldwell 24) Tommy Ramone 25) Brian Downey 26) Johnny "Bee" Badanjek 27) Doug Clifford 28) Clem Burke 29) Topper Headon 30) Sandy West
I must admit that I'm surprised that Keith is not in your no. 1 spot, Chris, so keep me in suspense, I can't wait to find out who beat the mighty Moonie in your list.
2. Bill Ward (Black Sabbath) Part of what makes Ward stand out amongst many other more technically accomplished drummers of his generation is the context. While many hard rock and proto-metal bands had pretty basic drummers, Ward added some jazzy swing to Sabbath's arrangements. It's not just the playing, but the parts he wrote, especially on the first six albums, and the two Dio albums. "War Pigs." Black Sabbath - Master Of Reality (1971) Black Sabbath - Paranoid (1970) Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (1973)
#2 Elvin Jones! The Heartbeat and Sonic Pulse of the John Coltrane Quartet. Elvin’s playing with Trane on Impulse is MindBlowing! The only TimeKeeper that could challenge Coltrane. His soloing is second to none. He Hit hard as Hell & yet had Rhythm so intricate n Complex that only God knew where’s the One. Hip to every style. His best is “A Love Supreme as well as OLE’ and Live at the Village Vanguard where he Wears n Tears the Venue. Influenced everyone to ever play any instrument and Genre. SkinGod Supreme!

VERY cool pick, LP's and songs Mel. Absolutely love all those tracks, especially "Pressed Rat." Cream is my 2nd favorite band of all time. Hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving Mel.
@ thanks Gadget. I can’t say much about my thanksgiving since I’m going to be alone. The town will be bringing me something for dinner. It’s going to be a nasty day cold here with rain and snow. Thanks for liking my picks
@@melaniethurber5117 Cold here as well -- 15 degrees tonight and 29 for tomorrow's high. However no more snow for awhile. It's just Kelly and I tomorrow too. In the afternoon we'll visit you-know-who and 'rattle his cage' for awhile.
#2...Ringo Starr, The Beatles. I think Ringo has one of the best pair of hands on any drummer in rock and roll, in other words he could convey his percussion ideas from his hands to his sticks to the skins and cymbals with touch, clarity and precision. From the band's early pop songs to their folksy and acoustic numbers through all the groundbreaking psychedelic tracks and emotional ballads all the way through to their guitar driven heavier songs he gave each song exactly what it needed, high low and bottom end. Paul is a competent drummer and he had to fill in for Ringo on the White Album on Back in the USSR, Dear Prudence and Martha My Dear. Listen to the difference between those songs and some of the others Ringo played on like Sexy Sadie, Cry Baby Cry, Helter Skelter, Glass Onion and others....it's like night and day. 3 albums I enjoyed his playing on the most are Abbey Road, Revolver and The White Album. Most people will rightly point to his unbelievable playing on Ticket to Ride and Come Together as his best work, but I've always favored his musicianship on Rain.
My Pick today is the amazing and Legendary John "BONZO" Bonham, still listen to all those early Zepp albums on a regular rotation, i'm going with Led Zepp II , Physical Graffiti , and Zepp 4 Kashmir is one of my all time fave songs all across all genres such Power from Bonzo
I've always liked Cozy's drumming on "Slow Dancer". It was on Robert Plant's first solo album "Pictures At Eleven". That song was kind of like Kashmir Part 2 to me. His drumming was up front and loud on that track, and it worked.

Day 29. Buddy Miles -Them Changes, Band of Gypsys, The Electric Flag/ A Long Time Comin' song: Joe Tex Buddy Miles has played with some heavyweights throughout his career including Wilson Pickett, Mike Bloomfield, Jimi Hendrix, john McLaughlin, Carlos Santana and many others. I think in the USA you say the full number when you are referring to an Air Force Squadron, but in the UK we say 633 Squadron as six-three-three, it was weird hearing Pete say it differently. I was privileged to see Cozy Powell playing 633 Squadron on the Whitesnake Saints & Sinners tour in 1983 🇬🇧
Only one day left to the finale now, and today it’s time for me to pick the one and only 2. JOHN BONHAM, Led Zeppelin Yes, I guess, maybe a lot of people may have kept him for their list of tomorrow, but for me, he has been # 2 on my personal list for ages, as my most favourite drummer in hard rock (the genre that he helped to create, develop and establish in the late 60s/early 70s, a real pioneer at the time). But John and the band have been much more than that. They kept lots of blues and jazz elements in their music (the genres they originally came from). As a drummer, John for sure was one of a kind, and he inspired generations of drummers who came after him (including his own son). Albums with John worth picking are LZ II, III and IV for me, with HM to their debut. Songs worth to mention are “Good Times Bad Times”, “Whole Lotta Love”, “Moby Dick”, “Out On The Tiles”, “Gallows Pole”, “Rock And Roll”, “Stairway To Heaven”, “When The Levee Breaks”, “The Song Remains The Same”, “D’yer Mak’er”, “No Quarter”, “Kashmir”, “Achilles Last Stand” and “In The Evening”, but there are so much more I could add to the list. It's really a pity, and it has been a sad day for the band and for all us fans, when we got the bad news that he had passed away in 1980 at the early age of 32. The three remaining members decided to call it a day as a band. To them, he had been such an integral part of the quartet, who couldn’t have been replaced. Their on/off reunion concert in 2007 proved that the remaining trio still had kept the brilliance of their 70s skills, with John Bonham’s son Jason having taken the drummer seat of his father, and he really did him justice very well. This day really became their late “Celebration Day”. The CD/DVD box which was released much later in 2012, is a testimony for it. At this point, I guess Jason Bonham has deserved some honourable mention, not just only for his participation at this legendary concert. He has done a lot before and after. He’s been playing with Foreigner, Sammy Hagar, UFO, had his own band running… and, not to forget, he also played on Jimmy Page’s solo album “Outrider”. He also played the drums along with the Wilson sisters (of “Heart”) on the very well-known LZ cover of “Stairway To Heaven”, supported by an orchestra and a huge choir, while Page, Plant and Jones, along with US president Obama and his wife, deeply moved were watching this version of the song in the audience at Kennedy Center Honors, 2012. A real heartbreaking and touching performance, for sure. RIP John Bonham… and thank you for the incredible music you gave to us. 44 years gone, but still not forgotten. 02. John Bonham 03. Ian Paice 04. Carl Palmer 05. Cozy Powell 06. Barriemore Barlow 07. Nick Mason 08. Lee Kerslake 09. Roger Taylor 10. Bill Bruford 11. Bill Ward 12. Alan White 13. Mick Tucker 14. Chester Thompson 15. JOHN BONHAM - LED Zeppelin. Albums/tracks - Houses of the Holy (1973) and the Song Remains the Same; LED Zeppelin (1969) Good Times, Bad Times and from Presence (1976) Achilles last stand. Favourite performance from Physical Graffiti (1975) the thumping Custard Pie.
Day 2 pick is John Bonzo Bonham of Led Zepplin. Albums are Led Zepplin I. Led Zepplin II and Led Zepplin IV. Favorite songs are How Many More Times. Moby Dick. Black Dog. The Rover and When The Levee Breaks.
My top two from Cozy Powell are Headless Cross with Black Sabbath. I was talking about this not long ago on Brendan Snyder's channel in one of his new release/arrival videos. I felt that it was a very serious album. Very mature. So great. Very underrated. I think Cozy played a big part of that feeling. My other is Emerson Lake & Powell. My dad bought the album for touch and go, but she said the rest of the album sucked. I found it on CD at Tower Records in California, and I completely disagreed with his hasty nonsense of an opinion. I think Cozy was a more technical drummer than Carl Palmer in almost every way, giving the album a very powerful presence. I absolutely love their version of "Mars: The Bringer Of War." It is one of seven movements in the orchestral suite "The Planets," composed by Gustav Holst. Even if you aren't into classical music, I suggest giving The Planets a try.
Sensational !!! I was waiting!!!!! And as for the third album, my wife here beside me, Monica, has already been talking about it!! It's going to be Rainbow Rising, with that Stargazer introduction it can only be!!!!!!!! She hit the nail on the head!!!!
Pick number 2 Charlie Watts Just always laid back in the pocket keeping the time so many years. Albums Let it bleed Sticky fingers I'm also going to go with tattoo you Song can't You hear Me Knocking Live version of midnight rambler from get your ya-yas out Shattered Paint it Black He definitely gets more than one
Cozy Powell is the definition of a rock drummer to me! Power, taste and a recognizable and personal style. Always on point, original and cool fills never overplayed. Cool about everything he plays. Many drummers should learn now! Unfortunately, musicians like this no longer exist. A true legend!
# 2 Stewart Copeland Favorite albums: Outlandos d’Amour, Regatta de Blanc, Synchronicity (all by The Police) Favorite performances: The Bed’s Too Big Without You (even better in numerous live-versions, especially live at Rockpalast: th-cam.com/video/p4nr0pb2c0A/w-d-xo.html) # 3 Keith Moon # 4 Bill Bruford # 5 Simon Phillips # 6 Billy Cobham # 7 Neil Peart # 8 Lenny White # 9 John Bonham # 10 Mike Portnoy # 11 Phil Collins # 12 Tony Williams # 13 Ian Paice # 14 Jaki Liebezeit # 15 Ringo Starr # 16 Steve Gadd # 17 Jim Keltner # 18 Michael Shrieve # 19 Buddy Rich # 20 Ginger Baker # 21 Cozy Powell # 22 Guy Evans # 23 John Weathers # 24 Klaus Dinger # 25 Vinnie Colaiuta # 26 Jon Hiseman # 27 Mick Tucker # 28 Mitch Mitchell # 29 Dave Lombardo # 30 Manu Katché

Two days late but my choice is Liberty DeVitto who provided percussion for the Billy Joel band for many years. I was able to meet him back stage after a concert through a series of In-law / cousin connections. It was a lot of fun to hang out with him and the other members of the band. (not Billy though as he was otherwise busy)

@@melaniethurber5117 Thank you Mel. I'm glad you know this band, they're terrific. Denny was the original drummer for the Castaways in the 60's. They had a huge hit with "Liar, Liar (Pants On Fire)." Hope your day is special tomorrow. We are not big eaters at all, our Thanksgiving meal is usually like any other day.
Good morning (afternoon, evening or night), Pete. Back later for your selection. Personal pick today? An American musician, songwriter and record producer who may be the best known as the original drummer (for 18 years) for the Heartbreakers - Stanley Joseph "Stan" Lynch. Always happy to give a shout out to the hometown guys who left north central Florida and headed west to find fame and fortune as Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. Stan's family moved here in the early 60s and he was a high school classmate - at least for a year - though we were in completely different teen groups at the time. Stan appeared to have already decided music was his future and my group was more of what would be called the nerds/geeks. Lucky enough to hear him play in some local bands including Styrophoam Soul and Road Turkey. He can still be seen playing live around here at various times. Thanks, Pete. Looking forward to hearing this and your top choice later. Favorite song - always American Girl.
Awesome pick cozy is underrated love Dance With The Devil killer instrumental my pick for today is John Henry Bonham albums 1)Zeppelin ll 2)Zeppelin IV 3)physical graffiti song Moby Dick
I was going to guess that Cozy Powell might be in the final two but I thought he had already listed him earlier. Great choice. I will be very surprised if the number 1 spot isn't Neil Peart. I will officially bet both of my legs and all of my hair on it.
#2. Ginger Baker One of the best to sit in the drum chair. His power and style was unmistakable. Maybe the most important figure to change the way drums were played by having a double bass set. He and Keith Moon were inspired to go double bass drum after watching Duke Ellington whose drummers all used twin bass drums. And a row of midrange tom tom drums over the snare in a flat pattern so he could sit up high and strike down was a singular innovation on his own. He was inspired by jazz and world music particularly from Africa. And he was quite a character. He was in the Graham Bond Organization before joining Cream with Jack Bruce and Eric Clapton in 1966. He was in Blind Faith again with Clapton before starting Ginger Bakers’s Air Force. He inspired so many that came after him that it would be hard to quantify. He practically invented the rock drum instrumental solo with “Toad” while in Cream. Albums: Fresh Cream(1966), Disraeli Gears(1967) & Wheels of Fire(1968). Songs: “White Room” from the studio tunes. And “N.S.U” From Live Cream(1970)…at 10:13 it’s a revelation in modern rock drum playing. 2. Ginger Baker 3. John Bonham 4. Corky Laing 5. Clive Bunker 6. Mitch Mitchell 7. Tony Williams & Billy Cobham 8. Ian Paice 9. Charlie Watts & Ringo Starr 10. Bill Bruford 11. Cozy Powell 12. Elvin Jones 13. Spencer Dryden 14. Neil Peart 15. Micky Waller 16. Jim Gordon 17. Carl Palmer 18. Don Brewer 19. Jerry Shirley 20. Danny Seraphine 21. Carmine Appice 22. Phil Ehart 23. Kenny Jones 24. Michael Shrieve 25. Doug Clifford 26. Alex Van Halen 27. Peter Criss 28. 2. Barrie Barlow. The most underrated drummer of the past 50 years.

Neil Peart
Probably the most influential drummer to me growing up. I loved playing along to:
Cygnus X-1
Limelight
Subdivisions
Show Don’t Tell
2. Neil Peart

@@Alfred_Domke_antispace-sounds hi Alfred. Excellent picks
@@melaniethurber5117Thank you, Melanie.
@ you’re welcome Alfred
@@Alfred_Domke_antispace-sounds I'm more of a YES Man, haha
@@ziggyzagzi8017 Hi Ziggy! I like Yes too, especially Fragile and Close to the Edge.
@@gaiaeternal5131 hi Dave. Awesome pick and article

Dream Theater - A Change Of Seasons

My -2. Jon Hiseman. Track. Intergalactic Strut, Albums. 1. Electric Savage, 2, Wardance. 3, Strange New Flesh.
Excellent pick, Kevin. I went with Jon yesterday.
Great pick, Kevin! The Colosseum II albums are my favourites too.
Pick #2: Keith Moon
Antics like Gene Krupa on steroids (and a few other substances to boot), insane drum fills where they are not supposed to be...but miraculously they still fit. He was so OUT that he went full circle and was IN. My best analogy would be: Massive short circuit with electrical devices still working to the max. My number 1 rock oriented drummer of all time.

# 2 NICKO McBRAIN - Iron Maiden Hi Friends. Well to go with Nicko here. He has been Iron Maidens drummer for quite a long time and still so killer back there with his rock pounding heavy chops with the sticks. Will Go with 3 studio albums of POWERSLAVE , SOMEWHERE IN TIME and BRAVE NEW WORLD, There is so many great drumming on all Maiden albums and hard to choose just one HMS along will give you here. Just that songs like Aces High and Power Slave 2 Minutes To Midnight, Rime Of The Ancient Mariner. Also as of Caught Somewhere In Time. real love here, Wasted Years. Deep Purple's ... Ian Paice
Whitesnake ... Come An' Get It
Paul McCartney ... Run Devil Run
(with Pink Floyd's David Gilmour on guitar)
Green Bullfrog ... Self-Titled
(with Ritchie Blackmore and Albert Lee, no Blackmore or Paice collection is complete without it.)
Favorite Track:
Whitesnake ... Take Me With You
(from Live --- In the Heart of the City, the legendary closing track)
Other great/legendary albums he appears on...
Deep Purple .... ALL of them
If Ian Paice was ruthless and had a good attorney, he could actually own the Deep Purple brand. At least be the first among equals in the partnership that Deep Purple has always been. Paice has been the last founding member in the band for years. Every other classic member of the band has been fired or quit, except for Ian Paice.
Whitesnake ... Ready an' Willing
Whitesnake ... Saints & Sinners
Gary Moore ... Corridors of Power
Gary Moore ... Victims of the Future
Gary Moore ... We Want MOORE!
Gary Moore ... Rockin' Every Night -- Live in Japan
Paul McCartney ... Live at the Cavern
Ian Gillan ... Gillan's Inn
Paice Ashton Lord ... Malice in Wonderland
Paice Ashton Lord ... BBC 1 Live in Concert/Live 1977
Jon Lord ... Before I Forget
Bernie Marsden ... And About Time Too
Bernie Marsden ... Look At Me Now
Jon Lord ... Gemini Suite
Tony Ashton & Jon Lord ... First of the Big Bands
Bobby Harrison ... Funkist
Bernie Marsden ... Shine
(Reunited with Whitesnake members David Coverdale and Marsden for a 21st century take on the classic 'Snake song Trouble.)
Paice is still making classic music with Deep Purple right into the 21st century with this year's =1 album. Keep going, Ian...
Great pick with my number one pick tomorrow Cozy Powell, Pete.

Insane drumming!!!
ALEX (of) VAN HALEN
Eddie was, of course, always the musical focal point of VH, but Alex's talent as a drummer - alongside his equally gifted partner in rhythm Michael Anthony on bass - has often been under-appreciated when the band's success is looked at, and those early VH albums in particular are my personal favourites. However, my 3 album choices are...
VH I
1984
For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge
...and my track of choice is:
"Unchained" from Fair Warning
See you all tomorrow for the final pick, my Honourable Mentions AND a special "Inspiration" award...

Great pick Chris
Got him for tomorrow. What a drummer…what a great band !
I must admit that I'm surprised that Keith is not in your no. 1 spot, Chris, so keep me in suspense, I can't wait to find out who beat the mighty Moonie in your list.
2. Bill Ward (Black Sabbath)
Part of what makes Ward stand out amongst many other more technically accomplished drummers of his generation is the context. While many hard rock and proto-metal bands had pretty basic drummers, Ward added some jazzy swing to Sabbath's arrangements. It's not just the playing, but the parts he wrote, especially on the first six albums, and the two Dio albums. "War Pigs."
Black Sabbath - Master Of Reality (1971)
Black Sabbath - Paranoid (1970)
Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (1973)
i love his drumming on heaven and hell.
Actually working today. My pick is Ringo Starr. Albums: Beatles VI, Revolver and Abbey Road. Song is "Rain"
Great picks and story peter
Great article, Peter. As a teenager in the mid-60's, Ringo is the first drummer I really took notice of and have admired his skills to this day.
Hi Rob. Superb picks
I've always liked Cozy's drumming on "Slow Dancer". It was on Robert Plant's first solo album "Pictures At Eleven". That song was kind of like Kashmir Part 2 to me. His drumming was up front and loud on that track, and it worked.

I think in the USA you say the full number when you are referring to an Air Force Squadron, but in the UK we say 633 Squadron as six-three-three, it was weird hearing Pete say it differently. I was privileged to see Cozy Powell playing 633 Squadron on the Whitesnake Saints & Sinners tour in 1983 🇬🇧
Only one day left to the finale now, and today it’s time for me to pick the one and only
2. JOHN BONHAM, Led Zeppelin
Yes, I guess, maybe a lot of people may have kept him for their list of tomorrow, but for me, he has been # 2 on my personal list for ages, as my most favourite drummer in hard rock (the genre that he helped to create, develop and establish in the late 60s/early 70s, a real pioneer at the time).

That was a bit of a surprise as I have heard Pete say in the past that Cozy was his favorite drummer.

Cozy Powell

Long Live Rock n Roll
Song: Stargazer
Excellent choice!

Hi Gadget. I know the band but not the members. Awesome music. Hope you enjoy your Thanksgiving.
@ that song is quite familiar.

Terrific pick!
Good pick.
He was great on Brian Mays …Resurrection…many great performances by Cozey…
Hi John. Fantastic pick. He’s on my list.

Great choice.
I will be very surprised if the number 1 spot isn't Neil Peart.
I will officially bet both of my legs and all of my hair on it.
#2. Ginger Baker
One of the best to sit in the drum chair.
