    I hated it when I saw it in the 90’ cause it was another sad gay depressing movie. But now, there’s been enough positive gay roles, and I don’t have to fight daily for my gayness so I just enjoyed a great intimate movie. Super happy!!

      Weirdly I felt the same way about campy Batman. When Batman was shown as campy in the early films I was annoyed because I felt it was misrepresentation of the character , however now that there have been so many dark and gritty takes on the character that I don't mind the campy versions and even really appreciate them.

    I realized watching it last night that that time period is only slightly before my late childhood and youth as I struggled with who I was. There was still a lot of that world in the town I grew up in. But I think you hit it right on the head. What is beautiful about this version is how it leans into the love and care that they have for each other. How even amid the savagery, they look out for each other when the world won't. For me, it's all in that moment when Harold says "I'll call you tomorrow." That is what the story is really about.

    Although Parsons was great, most of the time I was thinking that this was too similar to his role as Sheldon Cooper and maybe he his hurting his career by choosing neurotic and controlling characters.

    I did watch the 1970's film recently to prepare for this movie and I'm actually worried about this because the trailer seemed like a copypasta version of the 1970 version. I mean, some shots are almost similar! So, it's a good thing that you recommend this one.
    With that said, the original Leonard Frey's Harold in the 1970's version really was unsettling. He had this air about him, though. I'm very excited about how De Jesus brings Emory's character in his own version because I enjoyed Cliff Gorman's portrayal so much. I do hope they bring back the Alliteration Allie of his character; it was fun. And regarding that comment on the guests leaving at the end of the movie... I'm very excited about that. The 1970 version ended the film a bit abrupt and a little bit of a downer.

    I'm really excited to see some of these actors back in the spotlight (Zachary Quinto & Andrew Rannells).
    It seems like Jim Parsons, Charlie Carver is also benefiting from his relationship with Ryan Murphey (Ratched, and now this). His career trajectory is a welcome surprise after first seeing him on Teen Wolf.

    I also rather liked it. I had seen the original movie back in the 90s and thought it was a bit harsh but also "true" in the sense of representing how many gay men lived/felt/acted from a certain time due to the way things were (and still partially are). This version, however, is as you noted: a little softer/more organic, and a more "realistic" take on the characters as a consequence of that.

    Fantastic review! I just subscribed to your channel. I saw the play in New York in 2018 and just watched the movie. I agree with your review and I love how you broke down the individual elements: that cake did look delicious! And the apartment(a set or an actual apartment?) I was thinking the same thing as I was watching it. The apartment set in the play was done in a more modern fashion, but I think the set in the movie actually worked better. I really got a feeling of 1968 watching this movie. Now I want to watch the 1970 movie, which I have never seen, just for comparison.

    Enjoyed the movie very much. However, I'm extremely tired of movies set in NYC and LA. It's as though the Hollywood machine believes that those are the only stories worth telling. We are all aware that everyone in NYC and LA think that theirs is the center of the universe (and that they quietly pity the rest of us for our "pathetic" suburban lives, such rubes), but the experiences in those two places are not like the experiences of the vast majority of Americans. Frankly, apartment life sounds horrendous, and the stories about that life just never stop...

    6:28 what’s the problem with Jim Parsons playing a straight character over a decade? Are gay actors forced to play only gay characters?

    • @chicken_beach
      @chicken_beach 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Don't think any shame in that character was implied, but I don't think Parsons was out at the time of filming BBT, right? Now that he is, at a time when his career can afford the potential risk (which seems to be always minimizing yay) and there are good roles out there for gay leads, he's "making up for lost time" going after them. Unfortunately actors sometimes switch career tracks permanently and can never can go back to getting big-budget roles with hetero relationships, so it's very much a consideration.

I get its based on a play and so its going to be "talkie" but I was really starting to feel the length. And I get its supposed to be this deep intimiate piece where each character reveal something about themselves, some dark truths but like the majority of the characters were just not very likable and they were all mean to one another. Like, why are these people's friends besides the fact that they're probably the only people they can be themselves with. But maybe that's the point.

Which was an issue because it's FULL of classic lines that were delivered in a really specifically campy funny way so as a fan, for me, some key lines fell flat. Grace, you're a bit of a loud mouth, but you're a stitch and I like you--your enthusiasm is contagious. However, I wouldn't so quickly put down the original 1970 film version; it's certainly a gay classic; Harold is flawless; there's never been any character like him ANYWHERE. Yes, it's darker, but us older gay guys (and yes I'm a guy despite my you-tube name) literally grew up with that film. As a very young person, I was THRILLED when it opened and that it even existed; I just didn't let the film get me down. It was and is "screamingly funny," as one 70's critic said, despite the self-hating element in it. You have to put yourself back in 1968; I mean, this is a year before Stonewall, for heaven's sake. Btw, I saw the new Broadway version, loved it, and like you, love the movie and am thrilled it exists. And Mart Crowley was still around to see his play become a film for the second time; the cast adored him. Sadly, he passed this year, but he lived an amazing, full life. Cheers to you-- :)

    From a technical point of view, this new version is utterly feeble compared to the 1970 movie.

    What the hell... All wonderful??? I just don't understand sometimes it seems like you watched a different movie than I did. They all hated each other and we're only together because they share being gay. That was clear watching how they acted around straight people. It seems like Jim Parsons seems to only play angry gay men. I like him better playing straight men. I hope I never meet a human as terrible as Jim played in this movie. I don't know how anyone can be proud of this movie, it shows that no one being gay can be happy. None of them had a ounce of joy or even contentment.
