I met Gary Numan at a movie theater about 4 years ago. He was very nice and took a photo with me. It was a screening of Hellraiser and I asked him, "Are you excited for Hellraiser?" and he said, "I'm terrified of these films! I don't know why I'm watching this." Such a cool memory and will always appreciate him taking the time to meet a fan!
It's amazing to see someone as legendary as Numan come out the other end of a long career so humble, level headed, and with a seemingly realistic perspective on his role in it all.
in real life hes also VERY humble and down to earth person I got to meet him randomly when I was stage managing once, he stayed a few minutes and talked with me about Aspergers syndrome and its effects as it affects both of us. very gracious of his fans.
I met him at BooshFest in the UK, a real gentleman in every way. You know every word of what he said was genuine and not said because he has a camera in his face. An inspiring selection of music as well.
You said what I was thinking but much, much better. Pretty humble guy for writing one of the best gottdayumed driving songs EVER!! Here in my car.. Fucking top that, anyone! Then he says he was downstairs writing something average and his wife was jamming NIN and he ran upstairs wide eyed w/ What's that!? What a cool guy eh? Welcome to America Mr Numan. We're very glad to have you.
Funny thing at the time he had a persona of being a real ass on and off the stage. I have seen a few interviews with him since those days and he comes across as a really nice intelligent guy
I love that Depeche Mode restored Gary Numan's love for music. Thank you for making these videos. I've been a huge fan of Gary Numan since the '80s and it's great to learn more about his favorite music. ❤
Now I feel like an ass, I always thought this guy would be a pretentious twit but he seems really cool and down to earth. Got to check out his newer stuff to make up for it.
I'd listen to him for another 2 hours. Knowledgeable, humble (he probably influenced most of the names he drops), tons of interesting stories to tell...
Indeed, Gary comes off as extremely humble here. It's endearing to hear him describe himself as "a weak pretender" compared to the legendary Kraftwerk. In my opinion, Gary is pretty good in his own right. One rarely comes across that level of self-effacement in the egotistical world that is showbiz.
I love how much of a fanboy he is of his peers & those whom he inspired who probably fanboy him in return. Love love Numan, his diversity, and his embracing Industrial music later in his career.
@@rea50 what is it with dudes trying to 'pick up chicks' in youtube comments? get a life you fuckin loser god im glad im not a girl i couldnt put up with that shit
Songs of Faith and Devotion is still one of my favourite albums. I didn't know that Gary drew such inspiration from it, though I shouldn't be surprised really. I think it's the best album Depeche Mode have made.
He went through a phase where his music was heavily influenced by DM, particularly their song "Walking in My Shoes" creeping up in a couple songs. Something similar happened from his influence by NIN; in fact NIN's "Pretty Hate Machine" and "Downward Spiral" have influenced his sound ever since he heard those albums.
So you're the one who picked my pocket for seven bucks! I had two c-notes in my socks! But it's OK! They were "stinkers". Of course you know I'm just kidding, I hope!
Gary is very generous in his praise, especially to Depeche Mode, and shows real gratitude. And I like how he mentions his wife, and gives her credit. Seems like a nice bloke.
Gary is me... all of his bag is my favorites. ULTRA by Depeche Mode was the album that really got me to appreciate music and ever since that came out, Depeche Mode has been my favorite band of all time.
Gary Numan-do you realize how special to people you are? I couldn't have gotten through my young years without you! Sure I am ignorant about music...but I know what I like and I purchased albums then. YOU and your music got me through my difficult younger years as I was growing and trying to learn about life! You are beautiful and amazing! Today I stumble across this video and it turns out you are funny too. Thank you for everything!
All these years, I had the impression that this guy was a bit of a tool but he seems like the nicest most humble guy you'd ever want to meet. Sorry Gary! More rock stars should follow your lead.
That describes about 70% of the population. In fact, finding a normal person without any problems at all is basically impossible. So is being mildly crazy the standard norm now? You can tell the whole thing, psychology, is a leetle beet of a scam when they wheel on a psychologist for a "murder" program and s/he very pompously delivers 'insights' into the reasons for the subject's serious mental aberration that a six year old could work out on his/her own.
It is very important that he said he wasn't influenced by Kraftwerk. I think its not only him, but a lot of late 70's british electronic bands weren't although they keep naming Kraftwerk as big influence.
Kraftwerk impact on electro pop is simply undeniable. Gary might say what he wants, but Kraftwerk were everywhere and did everything danceable before everyone,
Maybe he wasn't DIRECTLY influenced by them, but those musicians that did influence him in that electronic direction very likely were. Just about anyone whos come out during the past 50 years and has used synths and electronics in music has been influenced by Kraftwerk either directly or indirectly.
What an absolute gent, and what a lovely surprise it was when the man himself appeared on stage at a NIN gig a few years ago. Back in the eighties no one did a light show like the Numan. Fantastic gigs. peace
Remarkably humble for such a ground breaking artist. Plus it’s rare for me to see someone pick out so many favourite records of mine, here’s hoping I can buy you a beer someday Gary
A few minutes in, and I love how much he regards bands that were his peers - seems like a really nice chap! He needs more credit - Tubeway Army was a real British electronic music pioneer!
What a pleasant, extremely humble gentleman. GN mildly bashes his music legacy and talent, but he's got plenty to be proud of. Influencing generations of young electronic/Rock musicians is nothing to downplay.
Kraftwurk is ok. I PREFER DEVO!!! LUVS ME SOME D_E_V_O!!!! I do luvs me some Das Roboter but Devo did it first, and better. Was Kraftwurk around in the mid 70's like Devo was? Hell no to 9 inch!! Do not like that noise!!!
Im so happy he got his music back on track. I was deaply in love with his music in the 80:s and still are. You and Kraftwerk are the synth giagants. All other are followers. Much love.
Love Gary Numan. The first time I saw him was in 1980 on SNL (back when they would have edgy bands play)... He was so different and the song "Cars" was great very catchy. Hell over 30yrs ago, wow. Cool to see his picks and the many bands he influenced, like NIN. Rock on GARY!!!
Gary Numan is such a humble and down to earth person. His music has been a foundational part of my life, my music taste, and I'm sure inspiration as I get into making my own music.
Gary's always humble about his own contribution to music. So many bands/artists have been inspired by his work including those that have continued to inspire him, such as Manson, Depeche Mode and NIN.
he's very humble but let's not forget how ahead HE was : early live videos really are for another dimension, an alien/vampire doing music on planet hearth
Amoeba has to be one of the best music and video stores I've ever been lucky enough to stumble upon even thou I lived near them for years. If you like way off the mainstream music Amoeba's the place to find CD's.
I've seen almost every what's in my bag, and this one is perhaps my very favorite - if not one of them. I just love how personal Gary Numan about his choices, and how much appreciation he shows for every one of the artists he chose - so matter of fact, and so humble in his appreciation - despite the fact that he is a true legend himself. I may even have to agree with him about the NIN thing, even though it's been a while since I listened to them now. Awesome episode.
Awesome. I have to admit I've known of Numan for years (being a big 80s fan) but have only started getting into him properly recently, this is fantastic. What a laid back, honest dude!
I agree, me too. I loved him in the 70s and 80s too. Then I just didn't know he kept making music. Then I heard some later stuff, and I thought to myself, what have I been missing?! Splinter is so good! So is Dead son rising and Hybrid. This man is brilliant, lyrically musically. I wish I would have kept up, now I must catch up. He is right now my favorite to listen to, as I must catch up on all I missed out on through the years, and what a lot of years!
I was flying a microlight over Burton way in 1993 and a Japanese Zero came alongside and waggled its wings. Beautiful in beige with a big red roundel. I gave a timid wave. When I got back to my airfield and told the CFI he said its a Harvard in Zero colours and the owner/pilot is Gary Numan. One of those never forget momments. Thanks for being humble and decent enough to wave.
Love his music, old and new. Recommend seeing him live too because not only does the music sound great but he has a really enthralling stage presence. A performer.
Tubeway Army Numanoid fan for wow, how many years now! When Gary talks about his bad time's and lost his way, being King Numanoid, his loss was also all Numanoids! Glad to say now he's plugged all Numanoids back in, life is so much better! I'm Now Fully Connected And Rewired And Dreaming Of Wires Again! LOOKING FORWARD TO THE NEXT UK TOUR! Gary doesn't know how GREAT A MUSICAL MAESTRO AND AMAZING INSPIRATION HE IS TO SO MANY !! Glad you never become a full time pilot!! Life without your music ain't worth thinking about!! Peace and Health and Happiness to you all and to the World 🙏🏴🇬🇧
This man's music has had a huge impact on me. I love that he's so good in interviews and so generous with his praise of others. Opinion of him escalating.
That's what ' I ' was thinking! I guess when you've listened to Ultravox from the beginning yrs.. no other singer could possibly replace the original. I love Midge Ure. The live concert at the Roundhouse is simply stunning. Such feeling from him. Also saw him in interviews and thing he's absolutely refreshing.

This is the first "what's in my bag" video I've ever seen and now I see that Dave Grohl and Johnny Marr have done these too... I'll be watching a few more for sure.
I saw Gary Numan in London at the Rochester Castle in 1978 for 50p and he was brilliant. I saw him again two years ago in London and would say he was as fresh and inspiring, if not moreso than he was back in the 70s. 70s? Just doesn't sound right....look how he good he looks for the 70s!
Gary was responsible for my transition to all music electronic when I was 14. In 1979, when Cars first came out and was steadily climbing Casey Kasems Top 40 charts, I had never heard anything like it. That led to Kraftwerk, then Joy Division around the time I became a dj. But Gary was the first. Love seeing him doing so well.
I’ve met Bill Nelson so many times He is from my home town of Wakefield And I’ve had many drinks with him Such a great man Told me so much about the music industry And was a big influence in helping me form an old band called DINGLEBERRY HANDPUP He is 73 now Not seen him for a while But we stay in touch via FB
OMG he did not just say that about Midge Ure!!! ...it did make me lol!!! and love the way he dissed Midge years of Ultravox without even mentioning his name!! Honesty is a trait of asperger's... shame more people don't have it! (O;
I've enjoyed his music for a long time. And here it seems like he's a regular nice guy under his performance persona. I also like Bill Nelson and liked Numan's recounting of their attempt at working together, funny.
Made me see him in a different light - I'm not a great fan of his music but he's humble and articulate and clearly passionate about music - brilliant edition.
What I would do to get to Amoeba. As much as Tower Records is good in Ireland, Amoeba looks a thousand times better. When I get to L.A some day, whether it's next year, 2 years or 10 years, one of the first, if not the first place I'm going to is Amoeba.

this aged well. (not being sarcastic either)
you should ping him and make sure he's going to tune in on October 7 when the new Hellraiser drops :-)
He'llraiser the most scariest movie ever
Aw, I loved this! He does seem very sweet and down to earth in this video too. So cool you got to meet him!
He was hardly a pretender compared to Kraftwerk. They were equally perfectly wonderful!
So cool!!!!

Same here. Hopefully Midge Ure didn't get offended while watching this vid :D
Agreed. Rage in Eden is a masterpiece and then it just goes "meh"
What a lost what da f**k? Laments is maybe their best album! They were out of ideas maybe with U-Vox but not already in 1982.
He's so humble!

Trent Reznor covered Gary Numan. Metal is a great song.
They played Cars together live too. Awesome version too.
And Metal. I was there :)
Typical, I was on holiday when they played it. That was made out of pure awesomium
There's a band called Fews, they did a fun cover of Metal as well. I recommend it.
Fear Factory and Gary Numan also did Cars
His taste in music is, unsurprisingly, amazing. A lot of times artists I like are not people I have a lot in common with in this arena.
"Trent Reznor makes hard working people look lazy" what a slap on the ass from Gary Numan who coincidentally is rad
And vica versa ..trent loves numan

I don't think so. My brother has Asperger's syndrome. There is also a "rumor" that Gary Numan and David Icke ARE the same person!

5:20 hysterical!! 😂😂 what a funny and polite way to describe someone he didn't get along with but still respects artistically
Decent honest down to earth man, and the inventor of synth pop to boot
Inventor of synth pop? Did you watch the video where he said that Ultravox was already three albums deep by the time he was doing his stuff.
@@turntablemaestro8201 Right, and the actual inventor would probably be Kraftwerk!
gotta love this man so down to earth and humble. does he know how good he really is? Love him!!!
Enjoyed this one. What a nice guy.
LOVE Gary! Huge inspiration for me. Such a great video!! Seems like a great, down to Earth and approachable fellow.
Be bop deluxe Sunburst Finish….one of my favourite albums ever.
Gary is being quite humble...but Trent has said, more than once, that Gary has been a big influence on him as well.
"How cool would that have been ?!??!?!?!?!? But i didn't."
I’ve met Bill Nelson so many times
He is from my home town of Wakefield
And I’ve had many drinks with him
Such a great man
Told me so much about the music industry
And was a big influence in helping me form an old band called DINGLEBERRY HANDPUP
He is 73 now
Not seen him for a while
But we stay in touch via FB
Gary Numan's music has made me happy for like 35 years, regardless of what his detractors have to say. lol
'Are Friends Electric?' is world heritage caliber imo. ;) kinda like Blade Runner, if you see what I mean...
Credit goes to all the Tubeway Army for sure...
Live at hammersmith odeon 1984 still sounds fantastic today, especially on my vinyl :)
I'll have that bag Gary when your finished with it👍 what a cool fella he is
As someone on the spectrum I have a huge appreciation for Gary Numan.
Love you Gary, you are so easy to relate to.
alan wilder producing gary numan. brilliant!
You were outstanding in Minneapolis tonight. Thanks so much for gracing us with your new work. Fantastic. Epic. Thank you.
OMG he did not just say that about Midge Ure!!! ...it did make me lol!!!
and love the way he dissed Midge years of Ultravox without even mentioning his name!!
Honesty is a trait of asperger's... shame more people don't have it! (O;
I've enjoyed his music for a long time. And here it seems like he's a regular nice guy under his performance persona. I also like Bill Nelson and liked Numan's recounting of their attempt at working together, funny.
This is wonderful! Love the song and had all the versions and all the formats, lol. So cool to hear the stories behind the album choices.
+Kathy, agreed what a charming interview, and his tastes are more aligned to mine (he and I are about the same age)
Made me see him in a different light - I'm not a great fan of his music but he's humble and articulate and clearly passionate about music - brilliant edition.
Thank you
What I would do to get to Amoeba. As much as Tower Records is good in Ireland, Amoeba looks a thousand times better. When I get to L.A some day, whether it's next year, 2 years or 10 years, one of the first, if not the first place I'm going to is Amoeba.
Just be happy you still have a Tower Records. They're all gone now here in California...
