As a major fan of Strong and a marxist historian that has tracked down many "missing" books like this I've never related to a video more. I was happy to hear it wasn't just a different title to a more available work, I've had that deflating end to a search many times. My favorite works to find are the works of people that only exist in English vua Soviet English publishing prior to the late 30s because the writer was purged. This isn't because I think people who were purged are somehow more correct or valuable, it's just that they are super hard to find especially when they had no narrative of being anti revolution for western people to latch onto and therefore republish them. My personal favorite find, though nowhere near the rarest, is the collection "Science at the crossroads" where Soviet scientists, historians, etc presented marxist views on science in London in 1931. Not only is it the ignored foundational text for modern philosophy sociology and history of science, especially Hessens lecture in the social and economic roots of Newton's thought, but it also is kund of a kadt glimpse at relations between USSR and the west before the struggles against fascism and all related changes turned everything topsy turvy.

The "I'm not a communist yet" reminds me if what the great marxist ecologist told the HUAC at his interrogation. Im paraphrasing from memory. When asked if he was a communist he said he'd like to be but didn't think he was yet, a communist fights oppression in every form they find and unites theory and practice to make the world better and he felt he wasn't really living up to that. A really good way to undermine their simplistic and biased views while also trying to avoid jail.

Yeah either it was thrown out or stolen. I've seen books actually get thrown out due to different issues. Mainly political and religious thought inspired people to do that. And yes, some people steal books too. A lot of times books get purged for whatever reason. People, find them in the trash, discard boxes, or on shelves no one checks and bam they disappear. Example of this. I found the Satanic Bible by Anton Levey a few years ago at my local library on the shelf alone. Out of curiosity being a goth kid in my teens that book was something you read to be "edgy" and piss off Conservative people 🤣💯. It was gone 3 days later and no copy found in the physical and digital card catalogue lool. Very strange incident for me indeed. I'm like it's 2018, who destroys and throw away books anymore??

the books you can't find on the shelves may be stored off site or out of public areas. I work for a different massive city library where a few of my duties include contact with books our library owns that are considered too sensitive to be available for public use (mostly due to age, but I've seen some strange choices the librarians make on which books to put in safe keeping). these books are still available to the public though, albeit through a system that has direct librarian supervision to ensure the safety of the books. every time I get onto a subject to read about and look through our shelves for it, i end up finding books that have been completely forgotten, with at least two that i could find no information about online. those oooooold library binding editions of books make up the bulk of what my library stores off site.
additionally, if a book you want isn't available in your library system, please contact the staff to ask about inter-library loans!

Meanwhile, Jordan Peterson complains that The Gulag Archipelago is cancelled, and it's regularly in your face at any bookstore.

Actually, Gulag Archepelago *is* being cancelled. Not long ago it was required reading in Russian high schools. Then someone in the Rus government suggested Gulag the book might be traumatizing to young readers. I haven’t heard or read what happened with this, but pretty confident Solzhenitsyn has been been sequestered behind the library front desk, and class time studying his book replaced by “patriotic education”.

And training for service in the meat brigades. Which brings up the interesting topic of blocking units, much beloved by the NKVD during the “Great Patriotic War.” Anyone know if these were used by Trotsky or others in the Civil War?

@@TeikonGommost books were not though. American propaganda tried to convince people that all of the classics were banned but that is far from the truth. At school people still had to read European classics, whether they were French or Italian or Spanish. They still needed a vibrant education system, which is why most important or noteworthy books were authorised. Nietzsche was banned because he inspired the Nazis. So were some philosophers (especially those that inspired the Nazis.) but most were kept untouched especially in academic spaces where people had to read them. Mien kampf and many anti soviet books were banned for obvious reasons, but it’s not like they did not have an education system lol 😅 surprisingly enough, I think the amount of books that were banned in the Soviet Union is equal the amount of books banned in America.

Oh dang, it's still copyrighted? Otherwise it'd be worth teaming up with a small Marxist publisher for a reprint :)
