  • Lalitpur District, one of the 77 districts of Nepal, is located in Bagmati Province. It covers an area of 385 square kilometers (149 square miles) and is bordered by Kathmandu to the north, Bhaktapur to the east, Makwanpur to the south, and Kavrepalanchok to the southeast.
Geographical Coverage (City to South Remote Area)
Lalitpur District includes both urban and rural areas, stretching from the well-developed city areas to remote villages in the south:
    1. Urban Core (Lalitpur Metropolitan City)
    • The northern part of the district includes Lalitpur Metropolitan City (Patan), which is part of the Kathmandu Valley.
    • It is a major cultural and historical area with landmarks like Patan Durbar Square and various ancient temples.
    • The urban area extends towards places like Satdobato, Jawalakhel, Lagankhel, and Pulchowk, which are densely populated and developed.
    2. Semi-Urban and Peri-Urban Areas
    • Moving southward, semi-urban areas like Bhaisepati, Godawari, Harisiddhi, and Lubhu are found.
    • These areas are rapidly developing but still have agricultural lands and forested regions.
    • The Godawari area is known for its botanical garden, Shivapuri National Park extension, and eco-tourism sites.
    3. Rural and Remote Southern Region
    • The southernmost part of Lalitpur extends into remote hilly areas, including villages in Mahankal, Konjyosom, and Bagmati Rural Municipalities.
    • These regions are less developed, with scattered settlements and traditional farming communities.
    • Some well-known remote areas include Lele, Chaughare, Gimdi, Bhattedanda, and Malta, which are situated in the Mahabharat Hill Range.
    • Many of these places are still developing in terms of road access, education, and healthcare services.
    Elevation and Terrain
    • The district’s elevation ranges from 1,300 meters in the valley to over 2,600 meters in the southern hills.
    • The terrain shifts from flat urban lands to steep hills and forests in the southernmost areas.
