How I repot my orchid in orchid bark

  • Instead of flowers, I’ll buy myself orchids.
    The easiest way to repot orchids in my opinion is just with some good ol orchid bark. I had this one is a spaghnum moss/orchid bark combo but orchid bark alone is just fine!
    I avoid repotting when the orchid still has blooms, so when the blooms die off, that’s the perfect time to switch out it’s medium if you have one that’s from the store or if you notice the medium it’s in is cracked or old.
    These orchid pots are from @loweshomeimprovement but any pots with ample drainage works well.
    I’ve shared orchid rescues and orchid care but I can talk more about it if you want a orchid care video, let me know.

I learned to skip the ice trick and just soak that baby when it’s time to water, but I followed different advice and have clipped the stem back after it’s bloomed each time. I’m sad because my last stem and blooms were much smaller. I won’t cut it back any more, lesson learned. I enjoy the orchids much more since I’ve learned how easy they are to care for.

      Yes!! Soil kills and suffocates
      Orchid roots and turns them

      If it's a mini phalaenopsis (a small version of the one in the video) by all means if it's bare root give it a daily soak for 20 minutes, but then drain it off. You can leave a bit of water in the bottom as long as the roots aren't touching it, or put some damp grit or clay balls in the bottom. If you leave the roots in water it might look fine for a while but @promesselilla is right, it will rot sooner or later. They are not aquatic plants. Most need to get at least just dry before being watered again.

    • @Life_Improbable
      @Life_Improbable 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I put my phalaenopsis in water for about 3 months, because the roots were slowly rotting in the soil it came in. She was struggling for months and starting to lose her first leaves on the bottom. So I washed all the media off I could, peeled off the rotting sheeth off of roots and left the inside vain of the root. I soaked the roots in peroxide then put the bottom 1/3 of her roots in water. Don't let the middle root (the big one) soak, just the roots on the side. Every week or two, I put her in orchid fertilizer and let her soak for 1/2 and hour, give her a rinse and put her back in the old water she was in, just topped it off with distilled water, so she could keep her rooting hormones. Her leaves stopped rotting and I got 2 gorgeous baby aerial roots. I mounted her two days ago to some cork bark with Sphagnum moss and she seems to be loving life. We have a bright future ahead. She's been in my care for 1 year now. ALL this to say that they can live hydroponically, if you're willing to do the work. There are TH-camrs who do this often and they do well.

    Can you tell me more about this pot?
    It looks beneficial for air and moisture flow, but I imagine some plants will grow roots beyond the holes when they need more space.. and that might make them difficult to repot without damaging it too much? Or will they avoid the holes because theres not enough moisture?

    My orchids love to grow many laaarge air roots. When repotting, do I pot them in or let them up in the air? 😊 Have a beautiful day 🌺

      Leave them out. Aerial roots and roots that grow in the growing medium are different. If you put them in the pot they won't be happy and will probably die. Try grouping the plants together and standing the pots on trays of damp gravel or clay balls. Both will help to raise the humidity. Or you could use a small humidifier, but you'll need to up the ventilation or you'll get mould.

    I put additional hole along the sides of my planters to enhance drainage and oxygen intake. Am I doing the right thing?

    All my orchids are rescues from Publix supermarkets...
    When their glass pots break or the flowers fall off the company throws them in the trash... they don't even try to mark them down!
    So... I buy them... usually at full price... i have 4 right now and saw these clear orchid pots at Lowe's yesterday! Im going to get 4 today 😂

      That's because depending on the vendor they give the store full credit and the store likes to put out perfect merchandise for their customers.

    Is it best to wait until it's finished flowering before repotting

    Why do orchid need repotting if they like their root snug fitted ?? Also how often should this be done ?

    • @debbiethomas3687
      @debbiethomas3687 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Eventually any potted plant will either outgrow its pot or the mixture in the pot will break down and not allow any air to the roots. Then you need to repot.

    What can you do if the leaves on the bottom are alive and well but the stems from the blooms (near where you clip the wood sticks) those are brown, can you cut them down and will they grow again since the leaves at bottom are okay?
    Thanks

    I rescued an orchid 2 months ago and I had to cut the stem back but it has not grown back. The roots and leaves are doing beautifully! They don’t stop growing, but can anyone help me figure out my issue with my stem?

    I got my orchids almost 2 years ago, they were blooming at the time. Now, they bloom for the third time since I have them, they bloom around winter time up to mid spring. But they have a lot of leaves. Is it safe to cut the leaves even tho they are nice, dark green colour? My big orchid has 12 leaves right now. I never changed pot for them, I have them as they were in store. Sometimes I cut those dried roots which pops above the pot and then dry.
