Good Direction/Story Ramesh Saigalji based on novel Crime and Punishment. Music Khyyamji, Lyrics Sahirji and the great actors make it a classic. But special mention to Malaji who was just trying to establish herself in hindi film industry started to show what a great born artist she is. ❤❤❤❤❤ you Malaji. Crime and Punishment adapted to Bollywood during the socialist fervent, progressive writer’s movement etc. Rashkalnikov’s character from the book (played by Raj Kapur) is more complex and dark. His motivation to kill the (female) pawn broker in the novel - along with another woman who happens to unfortunately arrive at the scene of the crime) is the actual mystery in the novel. Instead of who did it, the book is about why did he do it. The movie, given the times it was made in, develops the theme of “rich vs poor”: rich are greedy/full of vices while the poor are giving/full of virtues - it was the standard socialistic class struggle paradigm. So Ram’s motivation to murder the pawnbroker is rather simplistic when compared to the novel. If you liked this movie, Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment is an excellent novel to explore Rashkalnikov’s character, one of the most complex one in literature.
Although Raj Kapoor is a great actor and director, I prefer #Malasinha over him, who was able to renew Indian cinema and introduce previously forbidden taboos in order for women to regain their place in cinema and society.
