A movie ahead of its time. One of the best films I have ever seen. A movie like this could not be made today, because no one has the balls to do it. Please reference Battle Beyond the Stars and The Last Starfighter for more details.

It's now available on iTunes and Google play. Before that the US blu ray or dvd was the only way you could watch it - unless you count the TH-cam uploads of which there are 4-5 fairly decent ones.

Yeah! I love the "space-fantasy" Krull...my dad took me to see it with my D&D buds, and like Brad says early on, as a kid the movie's intentions worked just fine: save the princess, the Horner score, the Glaive hero weapon, the Slayers and their spear-bolt weapon, the Spider, the Cyclops, Fire Mare's, the trippy "The Beast" sets/visuals..oh and the "black eyes Beast possession" freaked me out too!
*and yes, I clapped out loud like a dork when "The Glaive" weapon from Krull was used in the final battle from the No Hug Ninja "Sho" from this years Ready Player One.

You can find one of the special effects artists discussing his work on this movie. I think he had to step in because the villain's armours weren't up to snuff (another person worked on it) and so him and his crew had to fix that.
Lots of hard work went into that film-such a shame that it wasn't the writing and directing.
Freddie Jones was going through a weird time in his career. Krull, Black Cauldron, Young sherlock Holmes-seems like all the movies he was making were cult classics. But not hits.

I agree this is a nearly good film, I loved parts of it as a kid, was freaked out by other parts, and adored the Horner soundtrack. Movie still holds up, some good one-liner humor and those horses streaking fire across the sky is pretty unforgettable.

I just watched this because of your review. I really enjoyed it. I think the pacing was somehow off- and maybe a different plot would have benefited the whole movie. While there's nothing wrong with saving the damsel in distress I don't think the story helped the world building or allowed the characters to really shine. I loved the leads but they seemed so disconnected by the finale that their love wasn't so believable to me. I loved the symbolic fire but there wasn't enough on screen history to hold it up for me.

This had as densely layered a script a you are apt to find in a sword & sorcery film. It is very deep dive into concepts of stoicism and fatalism. Concepts more often dealt with in Asian films.

As a kid, this was the best thing ever. But when you revisit it years later, you realize it's all a bit of a mess. Aside from the epic James Horner score, everything else is kinda average.

Least informative thing Oliver has ever done. It's pathetic when somebody reviews a movie he doesn't understand, because he wasn't paying attention to the dialogue. Krull is set in a universe where there is no machine technology and everything is powered by magic. Furthermore, the beings within this universe are subject to the whims of fate and the constraints of time. Fate and Time are concepts around which a preponderance of the conversations in Kroll revolve. The most powerful known magic user in this universe is the Beast. Learning that Lyssa, the prophesied mother of the future galactic conqueror lives on Krull, he abducts her. As the opening narration stated, this "girl of ancient name" must choose her husband. However, the violence of the Beast's invasion has already prompted her to marry Colwyn, the heir to an ancestral enemy kingdom to form a military alliance. That is an important plot point, because it shows that had the Beast not come to Krull to start with, that marriage would not have happened! There are many plot points that just went way over Oliver's head. Among them is that the Black Fortress is an extension of the Beast. The closer to the center of the Black Fortress, the more powerful his control over his magic is. When he sleeps, the area around the center reshapes itself as influenced by his dream. Not that he can't do that while awake, too. The magic binding the Black Fortress only exists so long as he does. After he dies, the rocky bits which composed it return to their original location in space (to await the next magic user who wants them, presumably). Another thing he whiffed on is the fatalist philosophy of the Cyclops. They know their times and locations of death from the moment of birth, so they focus their lives on traveling to that location to stoically await that time. When the Cyclops says that trying to change fate only results in greater pain, he is referring to the frustration of realizing fate cannot be changed. Thus, when he arrives at the Black Fortress to help Colson, it was because he knew that was always his going to be his fate, but initially remained behind to try and alter it. He met his fate as intended but amid comrades and not alone.

You understand. Well said on all points. Krull is constantly lambasted & humiliated like it's some common b-movie when, in reality, it's a masterpiece of fantasy cinema. The characters, world lore, and environments were all created with purpose & care. I hosted a free 35th anniversary screening of Krull at my local move theater this summer (7/29/2018) & the fans of Krull came out of the woodwork! It was an amazing testament to the enduring fandom of this film. Each to his fate!
