Great video, thanks a lot! I just bought a Zojirushi and that was the only thing that bothered me about them. Now that I see where the battery is, I will not worry at all about changing it myself. As a computer hardware tech, I have a soldering iron which will make the replacement even easier. This was very helpful! I know it has been 5 years since you posted this, but it is as useful to Zoji owners today as it ever was.
Glad you found it helpful! The battery that I installed in this video is still going strong. My family eats a lot of rice and we still use this rice maker several times per week.
@@ScholtzLife I just received a new NS-LGC05 rice cooker, so I do not know if it is still the same inside, but this model has been on the market for over 6 years, so I assume it is. In any case, I will find out in a few years when the battery needs replacing! Thanks again! I picked up one of these: th-cam.com/video/CMgNTTpGpy0/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=PapiEats
Thank you sir! I have a Tiger Rice Cooker and there's a ribbon connector attached to the circuit board. I have to take out the entire circuit board and not just a small part for the battery. I did NOT want to mess with that and was racking my brain on how to do hand gymnastics to get my soldering iron behind the board to de-solder the battery. I hadn't even considered just cutting off the terminals and taping a new battery. And voila. What I thought would have been a 1-2 hour job took me 15 minutes. My Tiger rice cooker is working 100% again!
So awesome! Even the guy at ACE Hardware couldn't figure out how to do it. It's the best rice cooker ever, and we didn't want to have to buy a whole new one (which would probably be made more cheaply nowadays and not work as well, but be more expensive). THANK YOU!
I’ve had a slightly older model for over 8 years and its battery just died. I knew I could keep using it but the timer function has been very useful when I get home late from work. Thanks to your video, the battery is back on! Thank you so much!
I was very happy to find this video. Then I started unscrewing the bottom of my Zojirushi rice cooker and realized that although 3 of the screws holding the base plate in place had Philips heads, the 4th has a hex head. Unfortunately, the only hex screwdrivers I have are in a folding multi head screwdriver, and they aren't long enough to reach the deeply recessed screw. I can't imagine why they would make the 4th screw different, other than to make life difficult. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to live with resetting the clock on the device every time I set the timer, which is pretty much every night since I mostly use it for the steel cut oats I eat for breakfast. Not a big deal - it will give me an opportunity to practice patience.
That's frustrating! If you're in the UE, Harbor Freight has a long reach hex set for $8. Might also be able to find something under $10 at your local big box store or amazon.
Cool, thanks! I'm going to try it...I've got a slightly different model, but you've made it look like I can tackle it. BTW: if I lose my nerve, I'll ask my jeweler to do it rather than sending it out...guessing it would be easy for him, too. Thanks again.
Different models may have different screw configurations. Without seeing what yours, I can't know. Shine a flashlight on it. Might be Phillips (cross shape) or Torx (star shape).
Hi i have 2 Zojirushi NS-TSC10 and am trying to get the good working lid from one to replace the other one that is broken, i cannot seem to get the handle off to then get to the lid, any ideas or instructions to assist, thanks.
Hi, I'm sorry I haven't tried to remove the handle. There are no exposed screws for the handle. I wonder if you might have to remove the bottom of the unit first. Then look up inside for the mechanism of attachment. Good luck 🤞
In my personal experience, the battery lasts a long time. I use this rice maker every week and the battery installed during this video is still working in spring 2022.
Hi! Can you please tell me what size did you use to open the rice cooker? Is it an Allen wrench? Or the hexagon shape screw and what’s the length? Because I need to buy it so I can open and fix it. Thank you!!
Hi, it's Phillips screws. They are recessed approximately 1 inch (or 2cm) into the body. Most medium sized Phillips head screwdrivers should work as long as the shaft isn't too thick.
The newer version of this machine they made the battery MUCH harder to replace. You basically need to take the entire machine apart and remove the circuit board. They really want you to buy a new machine when the battery dies...
Ohh wow! That's disappointing. I read that come countries are enacting (or have enacted) laws that require products to be more serviceable. Bummer if Zojirushi is going in the opposite direction. Anyway, as of 2021 my battery replacement is still going strong. Thanks for your comment.
That's not all; while three of the screws at the bottom of the unit can be removed with a standard Phillips screwdriver, the other screw is a non-standard star with a prong in the center, making it impossible to remove. I tried using a power drill to wear down the prong without success. I haven't given up; I AM going to defeat this latest unwarranted attempt to lock us out just so the greedy manufacturer can make more money. Some Zojirushi employee looking for a promotion must've seen this or a similar video and said, "Oh, no; we're going to stop that right now!" People are naturally selfish but companies can be extremely greedy. Their motto remember, is, :It's not personal; it's business." This relieves them of all human feelings and compassion. An example of this is the COVID-19 vaccines released by big pharma, which they lied and told us are completely safe and necessary, but turned out to be harmful. They were clearly motivated by greed. They said they'd release their research data on the vaccines in 75 years, when everyone working on them is already dead.
So the rice cooker is rendered useless after this battery dies? Or will the clock come on(using electricity from cord)when you plug it in even after the battery dies?
The cooker still works with a dead battery. The default clock will come on whenever the unit is plugged in but the battery keeps the time. Thus, when the battery is dead, the clock time will be lost whenever the unit is unplugged and will need to be set each time the unit it plugged in.
On ours, like so many, the battery died. Works fine when plugged in, but the time resets each time. So every time I make rice I set the time, then the timer. Takes an extra 15 seconds. I’m intrigued by this replacement video, might try it. Fantastic rice cooker - had it for maybe 10 years.
Could you tell me how to open the zojirushi rice cooker bottom? There is one special crew that I could not found a screw driver would fit it. The rest of the three screw is philip's.
Hi, it's been a while so I just looked at my NH-VBC18 unit to refresh my memory. On the bottom it has 4 Philips screws, one in each corner. What does the special screw look like? Which model Zojirushi do you have?
I have the same issue with the 'security screw' being one of the 4 screws on th bottom of my NS-ZCC10. It's a star-type screw head with a raised post in the center; therefore a standard drive bit won't work...
I removed the special screw (and rather easily i must say) with a flat slim flat blade screw driver. I had a set with many different widths and found one that spanned from one "star point" to an opposite one passing to one side of the center raised post. Good luck!
What kind of rice are you cooking...white, brown, sushi...? The Zojirushi inner bowl has markings for type of rice and water level. For example, add 3/4 cups (180 ml) of white rice and then fill the bowl with water up to the "White Rice 2" line marking.
Eventually the tape will fall off. You can get a new battery on ebay for a few dollars and solder it in yourself or take the little board and a new battery with the tabs to an electronics repair shop and I'm sure they would solder it in for you for not much money.

Thank you. Ebay'd the battery and will do this install. I like your no solder solution. Simple and gives my rice cookers several more years of life!

Turns out you can buy the battery with the mounts already soldered on. Just unsolder from PCB and remount. Easy Peasy!
SO helpful. Thank you very much‼️

Thanks for the video! Noticed it's 6 years old, how well did that little hack work in the long term? Thanks again!
Hi, it's been working very well! Still has the same battery that I installed in the video. We use this cooker on average 1 - 2 times per week. 🤠
@@ScholtzLife Awesome, thanks for the reply!
There is one screw that is difference as compare to other three screws, what type and size of that one screw ?

thanks i have a silly question, why do people unplug their rice cookers? isnt it pretty much stationary
It's definitely more convenient to leave it out. In my house, kitchen counter space is limited so I keep the rice cooker in a cupboard between uses.

Does the battery in these rice cookers need replacing very often?

What's wrong with your cooker? Mine has the clock on, but all button is not responding.
Mine had a dead battery. Not sure about your button. Perhaps it's an electrical wiring issue.

$1.99 for a CR2450 battery holder with two soldering points.
How is your rice cooker now. Is the electrical tape still doing okay and not melted by the heat?
Hi, yes it's still working great. I use it 1 - 2 times each month; no issues.
i think the tape is too far from any indirect heat source to do any damage anyway

It takes a t25 tamper proof torx screwdriver. Not bad to have around specially if you like fixing stuff
They don't make it easy to replace the damn battery.
