Taking your advice to use an auger to mix my soil has been the best thing for me this year! As a Lady Of A Certain Age, I have found mixing my ingredients with a shovel results in excruciating back pain days later (you'd think it would let you know as you're doing it, right? Ha!) The drill is fun! Thank you, so much!

I am so sorry but I am laughing at the moment- OMG I have just harvested probably 30lbs of sweet potatoes from a 4 x 4ft bed & have never seen such a procedure just to grow slips- I honestly am a fan of your channel & try to never miss but I have never seen so much trouble to grow them.
Hey buy a sweet potato- throw it in the garden bed- let the slips come up & transplant the slips around the garden bed & Wow heaps of sweet potatoes. Don't forget to water them though. Cheers Denise- Sub tropical Australia. :):)

Growing sweet potatoes is the best plant to grow because it's easy to grow. You can eat the tubers and the tops/leaves. You can put the leaves in a lot of dishes like boiled or steamed and make ensalata, or stir fry it, or add them in Filipino stews like sinigang or nilaga.
The tubers are generally sweet, you can just boil them and eat them by dipping in some sugar, or frying sweet potato slices and sprinkes sugar while frying, or putting them in adobo, sinigang or nilaga.

We started ours from slips that were mailed to us a few weeks ago. They did not look very happy, so we simply placed them in a cup of well water with a bit seaweed fertilizer and set them under grow lights for about a week. They bounced back, developed new growth and roots. Then we planted them in a 30" deep x 3 x 4 cardboard box. They are loving it! First time, hoping for a great fall harvest! Looking forward to seeing your progress!

Yes, I enjoyed this! I love sweet potatoes but I don't like paying for them. There is no tradition around growing and eating them where I live, so even if the climate here is fine for growing them, they are expensive because so few buy them. This also means there are no seedlings. However, some friendly American homesteaders on TH-cam have posted instructions for growing sweet potatoes from the sweet potatotes themselves so next year I hope I will be able to do that 🙂

Interestingly, though sweet potatoes don't like muddy ground, they grow wonderfully in a flood & drain hydroponic bed. So it's not really the amount of water - it's the lack of air. But they are super easy to grow and super tasty. I am currently using them as a groundcover plant for my new berm because the vines spread super-fast and I wanted something pretty and edible to fix the soil/mulch in place as quickly as possible.

We put two store bought sweet potatoes half buried in a small pot, took WEEKS to get one to start putting out slips, the other just rotted away, maybe too moist? Anyways we just clipped the slips off, took a few leaves off, stuck in water until roots formed, the potted them up in gallon pots to better acclimate to soil in a partially shaded area with ability to harden off in sun once they were comfortable. Once they put on some growth, some three feet long (yeah too long) we planted in the grow bags. Cut some leaves off areas of the long stems and buried them so they would put down roots. Could have prob let them drape on the soil, but wanted to be sure they’d get ample moisture and opportunity to root at those intermediate regions along the length. I didn’t add enough sand to the mix, but will next year. Will see how these do.

I picked up the Myanmar Purple, Lilac Beauty, and Korean Gold from Baker Creek, too! I heard Jacques list off the varieties and went waiiit that seems familiar. I've heard that planting them diagonal or sideways (like, the leaf nodes are in the soil, and the leaves are sticking out) promotes more sweet potatoes, since each node can root (and therefore make tubers). Maybe it's worth a try for any plants you guys have left or cuttings that you can make?

    • @eklectiktoni
      @eklectiktoni 2 ปีที่แล้ว

You don't need to put a whole sweet potato in the ground to get more. Just a small piece of one will send out shoots (called slips) if you place it in water or moistened soil. Then detach the shoots from the old potato piece and pot them up (or plant in the ground). If you use a whole sweet potato, it might actually take longer to make offshoots because the root would continue to bulk up and eventually get tough.

Growing some slips from a storebought (so far, a working food hack, that is, if I remember to keep changing the water* lmao) so this came at a good time; my first time growing them.
Odd they are not potatoes and come from the morning glory family.

You didn't show us the drainage holes in the whiskey barrels. Did they come pre-drilled or did you have to drill them yourself? How many holes did they have, did you have to add any? You talked-about sweet potatoes needing good drainage.

I planted my sweet potato months ago and the vines are growing more vert., on a tomato cage turned upside down. They climbed the trellis and everything else! They are very happy and should be almost ready. Happy growing.

Question on Municipal Compost--I assume they collect grass---no worries on sprays used on lawns? Want to try this in NY, probably next year.

You should do a video on aloe Vera propagation or how to take the mother aloe and make baby aloe plant with it

How often do we water regularly? Also, how long must we allow vines to grow? Can they be pruned?

Water them every other day and let them grow wildy and don't prune.

RIP your DeWalt drill. Love the concept but I’d use an extension to keep the drill out of the dirt. :)

QUESTION: any one, if you know the answer: Why transplant "only sprouted part ie. rooted slip" as opposed to planting "sprout/slip that is still attached to piece of sweet potato"? In other words, cut piece of sweet potato with a slip on it?
