I am torn between TOTK and BG3, played them back to back. Two of the best games I've ever played and both give you unprecedented levels of freedom in wildly different ways. I would not be mad if either won.
What I do appreciate about this year, is the VARIETY of games we have for potential GOTY. Hell, some people have multiple ones, and that's fine, because there's just so much quality this year. I still don't have a solid pick this year.
TotK still game of the year, are we stupid? I have over 400 hours clocked into BG3, the second best game of the year, and it's not even close to the actual best game of the year, TotK is unfair to any other game that has existed up to this date.

BG3 is just defrosted, and undercooked, act 3 is a colossal disaster, but since act 1 is so well frontloaded, reviewers and users are giving it a 10/10 before getting through the first of the 3 acts... What finished game needs weekly updates adding content... POST release... like, players have sent the wrong message when they said "BG3 should set the new standard"... When it just continues the trend of unfinished games on release... The message is "players and reviewers are capricious dummies that will decide like a hivemind when something passes their hypocrisy test, and when something is just a gimmick (like what BG3 fans call TotK, a superior game in every meassurable way)" TotK is over a decade ahead of everything else, if it doesnt win GOTY, the industry and its critics are a total joke... Then again Hades and Doom Eternal lost to TLOU2, so it wouldnt surprise me. The physics alone in TotK should give all other developers imposter syndrome, because they've been unmasked as amateurs next to the achievements of Zelda, which will likely fly over their head, since im 99% sure GOTY will be stolen by BG3, undeservedly so, since not only it isnt finish, but it aint doing anything new, or better... I mean even Zelda NPCs, all named ones have unique faces, while BG3, which does face closeups for dialogues, has like 5 faces per race... So you see closeups of the same face over and over and over and over. Inbreeding runs deep in the forgotten realms it seems.

There's never been this many solid contenders for GOTY. What an insane year for gamers. Even if not all GOTY, amazing games I can think of are Dead Space, Hogwarts Legacy, RE4, TOTK, FF16, Spider Man 2, Baldur's Gate, Super Mario Wonder, Armored Core 6, Lies of P, Street Fighter 6, Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty. gotta sayPS5 gamers have been eatin especially good
If Xbox would spend half the energy they do on acquisitions actually trying to develop great games with the countless IP they've acquired they might actually have a valid goty contender 😂
They have a chance to make a nice landing with their next console if they get ES6, Overwatch 3 and some other titles as launch titles. There will always be new IPs and the people that made those companies leave anyway so these acquisitions won't be the power moves MS thinks it will be. EA did a lot of acquisitions and those studios haven't been the same since
Oh, you mean the only ones who managed to release 2 brand new IPs within the same year? (Starfield and Hi-Fi-Rush) instead of sequels or remakes? (SpiderMan, Mario, BG3, Zelda, etc etc)
@domymbd don't forget Redfall--arguably the most disappointing 1st party game released by any consoles in years. They "managed to" take those games away from gamers off other consoles through acquisition...probably the reason Pete Hines left. And through mismanagement released the lowest rated main line Bethesda Game ever.
SF6 won’t make the cut. Forza wasn’t the only example in past years. SF4 got a higher meta score than 6 back when it was released but wasn’t nominated either. Smash is different because nobody counts it as a traditional fighting game. With regards to BG3, it definitely is an iterative game, much more so than TotK, based on Larian’s previous game Divinity Original Sin 2. Reasons why the media will be more inclined to give it BG3 will be because most of them haven’t played Larian’s previous games, and also they want to reward Larian as Divinity Original Sin 2 got shafted back at TGAs in 2017, despite having an incredibly high metascore. While they would think that they have already rewarded Zelda for BotW back in 2017 despite some of the crazy programming magic like rewind and especially ascend. At the end of the day, awards are meaningless and we should just enjoy what we enjoy.
Spider-Man probably winning cause it's the most cinematic, plus some of the people voting probably can't help themselves and will vote for it because of the inclusive elements and side missions, even if it doesn't really affect the game all that much.
I pretty much believe what Nintendo prime said last year, Keighley awards has always been either anti Nintendo or prefer western games more than Japanese games. So that's why I also think goty winner is gonna be Baldurs Gate 3,it's an awesome game that can rival up to totk but also it has some of the anti Nintendo stigma among some mainstream media and ytbers backing it up.
Are they really bias though? I don't think it's fair to just potently generalize the media as being anti- Nintendo because if that were the case than Botw wouldn't had won in 2017 over Horizon zero dawn. BG3 Possibly winning Goty, has everything to do with the game simply just being a masterpiece in the rpg genre, If you played it you'd see why some people are calling it Goty. it has nothing to do with being anti- Nintendo like you claim.

And speaking of botw, that was the only time a Nintendo game won game of the year. Meanwhile last year Stray a ps4 exclusive was nominated over several highly rated Nintendo games, and not to mention xc3 lost to God of war ragnarok over best music score. Even rpgs I don't think a Switch exclusive or a Nintendo game ever won.
@@Mario123007 Why're you comparing XC3 to God of war Ragnarok? when XC3 scored significantly lower than GoWR on metacritic. Not saying reviews scores are the be all end all, but they do play a major part in what game gets Goty. The only reason why no other nintendo game other than botw has won Goty is because simply no other nintendo game has innovated on the level as botw, hence the reason why it was so praised by critics and reviewed highly on metacritic unlike XC3.
@@danzoelizio2288 I am talking about the best music score award when it comes to xc3, and yes score doesn't matter in the music score category , i aware it's already a W for xc3 to even get nominated but many people agreed that xc3 should have at least won best music score over God of war ragnarok because it's has more and better music. Score only matter when it comes to nominating goty, as to which wins goty it really doesn't matter. Because of that judges who rarely plays Nintendo games or don't like Nintendo often votes for other games regardless how good a Nintendo game is. Heck Fire Emblem three houses clearly was one of the highest rated games of 2019 but it did not get nominated goty. And the last part you said is nonsense, many Nintendo games that got nominated goty have all sorts of innovations compare to other games, so is xc3. And what you said proves my point actually, it takes a Nintendo game to get almost 90 or more to even be a goty discussion when other games can be over 80 and get nominated or even win goty (like control, death stranding, stray etc...).

I still believe Tears of the Kingdom will get overall GOTY at The Game Awards. Here’s why: 1. It’s much more innovative than BG3, which will be an important factor for a lot of critics. BG3’s gameplay is mostly iterative from Larian’s own Divinity OS games, just expanded upon and with much higher production values. In fact, most people I've seen on social media aren't even calling BG3 innovative per say, they're simply saying it's an amazing game and a new high bar for CRPGs, with a lot of that due to the high cinematic production values (motion cap, the amount of dialogue, the graphics, etc.) which is admittedly ground-breaking for isometric-style CRPGs but not for RPGs in general by any stretch. 2. Even among critics, TotK still has much broader appeal and is more easily accessible on a fundamental gameplay level. 3. It’s the best-constructed open world ever made. With the exception of Breath of the Wild, nothing else rivals the freedom, the seamlessness, the interactivity, the physics, and just the overall stellar execution of its open world. 4. As publicly lauded by dozens of game developers, the technical wizardry behind gameplay mechanics like Ultrahand, Ascend, Fuse, and Recall, coupled with the fact that it’s running on the geriatric Switch, is more mind-blowing than anything BG3 does (a game which also has the benefit of being able to tap ultra-powered hardware). This will likely be a deciding factor for some critics. 5. TotK has a staggering 85 perfect scores from critics recorded on Metacritic, which is the most ever recorded on that website for a single game. I don't think that will translate to having an impact on the votes at TGA, but I'll point it out anyway because it's an incredible feat. 6. Somewhere around 10% of the votes at TGA come from the regular gaming public, and it's a reasonable bet that TotK will get a lot more of those votes than BG3 because a LOT more people played TotK. 7. BG3 was, and I’m pretty sure still is, far buggier and simply much less polished than TotK in general. TotK was an exemplary, complete and polished product from start to absolute finish. You can be sure that will be a deciding factor for some critics out there who are on the fence about choosing BG3 or TotK. 8. Lastly, the "Nintendo magic." Call it nostalgia for beloved franchises coupled with excellent game design, or call it what you will, there's a powerful emotional response triggered in people, especially gamers who are of a certain age, when a brand new tentpole Zelda or Super Mario game is played for the first time, especially one that's legitimately GOAT caliber like TotK. BG3 can't possibly match that level of positive receptor response, and whether it's fair or not, it will be a strong factor for some critics. Anyway, my two cents. ✌️
@@JB-qu8pv Everyone has their biases. Zelda fans, Baldur's Gate fans, Nintendo fans, PC fans... you name it. But no, that isn't what I was talking about. A bias is something one has even before playing a game; it's a preconceived idea or belief. A couple good examples of "bias" are when someone votes for a game they have never even played or hates on a game they've never played, due to preconceived or unreasoned notions. *I was talking about the emotional response triggered when PLAYING a game.* Everyone gets some type of emotional response when playing a game, no matter what the game is. The emotions that first party Nintendo EPD games evoke while playing tend to be on another level due to some combination of nostalgia, excellent game design, fun factor, and love for the characters. That's the Nintendo "magic."
Can't believe how few people are saying PIKMIN 4!! Even after TotK and Mario Wonder, Pikmin 4 still takes it for me. I know it won't be nominated though so I'll probably root for Baldur's Gate 3
Yo my brother OJ, not sure if you got to play BG3 yet, but to get you more inspired, the combat is closer to Fire Emblem than it is to something like traditional Western RPGs. Its one of the BEST non JRPG turn based games I ever played, I put it right up there with FF6, FF Tactics, and Fire Emblem Awakening in terms of story being super on point.
I fully agree with you OJ!!! BG3 will win imo despite how revolutionary TotK is, BotW did it first and currently is still my fav. Shout out to Octopath 2, I’m finally digging into it (bought the collectors edition) and it’s incredible: should be up for rpg of the year and should imo win soundtrack of the year. Edit: TotK was, to me, the equivalent of Elden Ring. Both are impossibly huge and overwhelming. They also imo suffer from showing their gamey structure. It’s like an amusement park after a little while you see the patterns. I put in 250hrs with my kid and loved the experience despite the fact. It’s been an awesome yr for games!!!
I recall I was going to get Redemption Reapers as my winter vacation game but OT2 got better reviews so I ended up with that one.. Then got RR a little later
@@aureliacortez3625 Not all of them, but TotK was my previous frontrunner, followed by Fire Emblem Engage. I only have a Switch so I haven’t played Spiderman or Starfield, but from what I have played, Mario Wonder takes it.
Mario Wonder is my favorite game this year. But still, I have some minor "problems" with it, or more so, some stuff the game should have to be even better. 1. Leaderboards with Beat Time for every level, so you would try to replay them to beat your own scores or other people timeruns. 2. Hard mode where you can't use any badge 3. "NG+" kinda like other Marios did. Like changing the enemies (SMB and World) or adding new secret seeds like the green stars in Mario Galaxy 2. 3. More savefiles for each account. I can't replay the game from zero without using another account or deleting my savefile. 4. More boss variety. I liked what they did with Bowser Jr and Bowser, but cmon, the game's full of creativity. Gime some bosses. 5. "Kingdom lore" like they did in Odyssey, with info about the Flower kingdom citizens, their activities, hobbies, economy, etc. Sure, they have a ninja zone and they do mining, but give us something more developed. And give the ninja ones their own identity/costumes. 6. More badge challenges. Really, some of them were really underused and the challenges were pretty fun. More reason to use them and tightly designed levels around are better than just breaking normal levels with the badges
As far as GOTY is concerned it's a two game race between Tears of the Kingdom and Bulder's Gate 3. TOTK takes it, or at least I believe it should. BG3 is loved by hardcore gamers and D&D fans. TOTK is loved by everyone, including hardcore gamers and D&D fans. TOTK is more accessible to casuals not just because its zelda, a landmark IP, but the gameplay it much easier for casuals to pick up than BG3. What Nintendo was able to pull off on dinosaur hardware is a marvel in development. They made all the mechanics and the environment work seamlessly with very little if any bugs at all. BG3 has no such milestones. It merely took what has already been done plenty of times and took it to a higher level. Same can be said for TOTK redefining open world gaming.....AGAIN! Other game devs are going to be copying aspects of TOTK more than that of BG3. BG3 is great game, an excellent game, but has it set gaming precedents for the gaming industry on the level of TOTK? PE's points on the media are valid points in being good insight into the minds of those who will decide the winner, but They wouldn't be good reasons to pick BG3. Saying you'll give it to BG3 because BOTW won it already turns the award into a participation trophy. if TOTK is the best game of this year then it should be awarded as such and other studios not having won yet shouldn't be factored in. I also don't think BG3 being more of a departure from its predecessors than TOTK is from BOTW is a strong argument either, especially when there is way more innovation in mechanics and gameplay in TOTK despite this. Really the best argument for BG3 is it being made on modern hardware. Can't be denied it looks better than TOTK, but could the developers for BG3 make a game that looks as good and runs as well on Switch hardware as TOTK? what do you think TOTK would look like if Nintendo had modern hardware power to work with? In the end it doesn't matter who wins as they're both excellent games worthy of the honor. There have also been other games this year which are great games everyone should play(Pikmen 4 needs more love!!). gamers are eating well in 2023.

Great discussion but I think there are 2 potential disrupters not mentioned here: Alan Wake II and CP2077 phantom liberty. Next week will be easier to gauge if Alan Wake II could get into the same zone of competition with SFVI, RE4, FFXVI, and Starfield for the outside spots in the top 6, but I also think cyberpunk could compete even though I personally wouldn’t be happy to see a DLC for a 3 yo game take up a spot. I do think Zelda is a lock for nomination but I also agree Baldurs Gate could beat it for the same reason elden ring could topple god of war: innovation. Advancing the genre. Executing ideas even if technical issues are present at launch. All these things weigh heavier each year at the Keighleys than iteration (like gowr to GoW or totk to botw)

Unironically, resident evil 4 remake is more of a "new game" than Zelda; TOTK. Re4 feels totally different than the original, while TotK feels like an expansion to breath of the wild. Anyone that says RE4 shouldn't be eligible and then names TOTK their GOTY is a fruitloop
other games to consider Game of the Year that have yet to come out are Star Ocean Second Story R, Super Mario RPG, and Persona 5 Tactica. great year for RPGs
Great video man, earned my subscription. I think BG3 will win as well. It seems to have won over many people. My personal list (in terms of what I enjoyed the most this year) is Star Wars Jedi Survivor, Spiderman 2, and Mario Wonder.
And as for other awesome games that came out this year; Metroid Prime Remaster, Fire Emblem Engage, Octopath Traveler 2, Xenoblade Chronicles Future Redeemed, Pikmin 4, Sea of Stars, Super Mario Bros Wonder, Final Fantasy XVI, Street Fighters VI, Balder's Gate 3, and many others.
My personal picks would be RE4 and TOTK. With TOTK eking out a victory in my mind. Play it was just sheer bliss. Totally BOTW DLC but I did not care. It was just so damn fun. And oddly enough I loved the depths.
I actually think it’s going to be that dark horse indie rep that ends up getting more nominations than its more well known contemporaries in Sea of Stars or Cocoon
It will come down to LoZ and BG3- and i think because of history and because of people wanting to spread the love...BG3 will take the prize. Zelda won a few years ago and although the game is not DLC , a ridiculous notion, the world has already shown their love of switch era zelda. It is a raw aspect of reality that the best pizza ever made is diminished if you just had pizza the last 3 dinners.
PlayerEssence, my personal GOTY picks, I'd have to go with two upcoming games as well with Super Mario RPG remastered, & Hogwarts Legacy as well as Super Mario Bros Wonder, & TOTK. Should HL turn out to be glitchy-free, that could bode extremely well for the game to be the 2023 GOTY. But then again with TOTK, Mario Bros Wonder, & Super Mario RPG remastered that Nintendo dropped a Texas-sized BOMBSHELL SHOCKER back in June, I really believe it's going to boil down to those 4 games....SM RPG, SMB Wonder, TOTK & Hogwarts Legacy! But for my pick being GOTY 2023, I'm going to go with *****Super Mario Bros Wonder*****!! Why? Because how you stated that from the reviews you had mentioned that they're declaring it be better than Super Mario World AND SMB-3!
Tears of the Kingdom will always be my GOTY. My frontrunners are Super Mario Bros Wonder, FFXVI, SF6 and Hi Fi Rush. I havent even played Spider Man 2, Baldurs Gate and Hogwarts yet😂
A lot relative to other years where you can't go wrong as GOTY in my opinion. Any of the those games are worthy. I agree that BG3 will win the Keighleys with the advantage of being that breakthrough game in its series over Zelda which is a direct sequel to a game that already won their award. I haven't played it myself and I'm bias towards Zelda so TotK is my personal GOTY. Hundreds of hours put into that game.
Yep I put 300+ hours into Baldurs Gate 3 in the first month and still discovering new things in that game. But I do agree that there is so many great games this year, none of us should be upset. At the end of the day the consumers are winning.
Even though Hogwarts Legacy is the highest selling game this year it wont get a nomination for unfortunately obvious reasons even though it deserves it. The other nomination will go towards an indie game which while be sea of stars or high fi rush. Unfortunately, even though they dont deserve it, Starfield will end up getting that nomination.
@@kami3449 I don’t see any indie game getting the nod this year. I think that Sea of Stars won’t because it’s a turn-based rpg, and that style of game gets overlooked by award shows. I’d actually give Final Fantasy XVI a better chance for the nod instead. And with Hi Fi Rush, it just didn’t reach the popularity of previous indie nominees from previous years, like Stray and Hades, to be in the running.
Armored core 6 deserves to win, but considering its more of a "most popular game of the year" totk will win, wich im fine with because i love loz, but armored core 6 is sooooo much better
As somone who loves TOTK and BGS3 is utterly insane woth what they accomplished with game play and real story choice. Being an independent stuido without the backing of a giant gaming publisher makes it even more impressive

I wish TotK wins the GOTY at TGA but I feel the same as you, Baldurs Gate is going to get it as it is something "new" and fresh and brought many gamers to try out a game and genre they have never tried out. TotK will be my GOTY nevertheless. As for the nominees, I predict the nominees will increase to 8 but if only 6 could be available I will go with: TotK, BG3, Mario Wonder, Spiderman 2, FFXVI and Alan Wake 2.
Doubt the number of nominees will increase, BUT... I do wanna say your picks are very realistic. If anything, I could see RE4R replacing one of them if they feel like allowing a remake as they have in the past. The difference this time around is that... I can't think of a year that's as competitive as 2023 in the gaming landscape.
While I love SF6. I dont think it will be a goty contender. Its spot will either go to FF16 or Alan Wake 2 (if its good) or even dare I say Metroid Prime remaster
'23 wasn't necessarily a good year for me at all but as far as gaming it was pretty awesome! I'm not quite sure what my fav masterpiece game is.. What comes to mind most is Trails from Reverie which is the best of the genre imo although it has some stiff comp with FE Engage and FF 16.. There are many other titles I haven't even gotten to yet like the New Super Mario and the Star Ocean 2 remake.. I'm also psyched they dropped a new AC this year and next year they're going to follow up with Prince of Persia.. I also ended up picking up Tears of the Kingdom and def have to get back to it at some point.. It comes across as far better than its prequel
Remakes shouldn't be eligible for actual GOTY. It sets a bad precedent that rewards games getting a second wind over new games that already have it rough for attention. RE2 Remake shouldn't have been nominated in 2019 over the likes of Fire Emblem Three Houses.
Game of the year usually goes to the game that was most talked about, and I can't deny that I played BG3 due to how much people kept talking about it. I tried it out with a friend and we are loving the co-op campaign the random stuff we can do is so fun. On the other hand haven't seen many people mention Zelda or spoilers for it online either. I have to actively avoid spoilers for BG3 and currently also Spider man 2 just because I don't have much free time with exams to play games.
My pick for goty is tears of the kingdom, and here’s why, I only bought it because I loved botw and expected it to be an extension almost of botw but after a few hours of gameplay I was blown away by how different the game is, totk is the best game I have probably ever played and after hours and hours of playing I still am not bored, one of the first games in a LONG time that I am not beating just because I don’t want it to end, with that being said I have not played bg3 as well have never played a top down game
Seriously Super Mario Wonders dont deserve to be in the Game of the Year nominees, there are to much great games that does more and deserves it more. Just look at all this games thats released FF16 SF6 RE4 Remake Sea of stars Tears of the kingdom Baldurs Gate 3 Spider-man 2 Diablo IV Starfield It would be a total waste on spot if Mario Wonders got in instead of any of these games. It should be nominated on other categories tho.
Bro got SF6 in the goty over starfield, lies of P, hogwarts legacy, FF16, and Alan wake 2... a fighting game.... goty... might as well say Forza or will be nominated. SF6 might not even beat out MK1 for best fighting game. Also, Totk is just a Btow expansion if it wins goty we all know why. It shouldn't even be nominated. It's a great game but 90% of it was cut and paste. It deserves other awards but in a year this stacked it's egregious that it's nominated. At least RE4 actually remade the game from the ground up can't say that about totk. Mario Wonder is a superior game to totk and say what you want about starfield or ff16 or lies of p but atleast they are new ip or new concepts. Hell even hogwarts legacy at least has a feeling of new exploration. I put 135 hours in totk most of it was doing the same thing I did in my 125 hrs of botw.
I like Mario wonders I just think the game is too easy. Usually these games aim for all ages but…. This is game is so ridiculously easy that it feels like it was made for kids age 7-12. Sadly I can’t refund since I bought it digitally
Street Fighter 6: a miss Soundtrack is not so great No access to past game soundtracks, that are honestly better than SF6 Minimal story in arcade mode. It is bite sized, so small it feels like a snack. Classic vs Modern controls. This is still an ongoing headache. Movesets feels off Missing unlockables, more stuff is going to be mtx Battle pass is meh Character season pass is a slog The TMNT crossover costumes, and being overpriced was a nightmare World Tour mode is interesting, but you have to invest a lot of time with it. SF6 is okay, but does not deserve a GOTY nomination Mortal Kombat 1. Also in a rough state. Feels like it was rushed Movesets are off sometimes, or miss input. Unlockables are minimal, more for mtx Story is amazing, better than SF6 Invasion takes some time to get thru, but worth it Miss the Krypt though Tied to always being online, if offline you lose access to some characters Several characters are only available by buying them (not part of the Kombat Pack) but in the main roster Kombat Pack is overpriced, but is it even necessary to have guest characters? Feels unfinished, there have been various patches, and character buffs Goty? Um.. i would honestly say pass this on a nomination

Baldurs gate 3 will easily win game of the year. Not because it is the best game, but because the industry will fear the fanbase backlash if it didnt. The game is good but highly overrated.
I really think it comes down to accessibility. Almost anyone can pick up and play totk and have a blast. Bg3 is meant for a VERY specific audience of 30 yr olds who grew up playing d&d. My brother tried to introduce me to it and I just couldn’t have fun with it. It was way too complicated to learn for me. Goty 100% goes to totk to me.
It’s a shame that BAldurs gate will win just because of the hype. Most Sony and Xbox players can’t stand that a “children’s company” like Nintendo could win another GOTY so they are all teaming up to say that Baldur’s gate 3 has already won, without even playing the game, which is causing its damage. A freaking top-down isometric game beating ToTK, which expended everything that was good in BoTW…. Insane and sad!
BG3 is on pc you know not just console, but anyways I haven't played any Zelda games since the gamecube one, but I'd say Goty should go to which game had a bigger impact in the gaming community. I didn't hear much talk about Totk on tiktok or twitter, but have been seeing that stuff nonstop for BG3. I honestly haven't seen many people mention Totk outside of well today when people start discussing game of the year. Granted everyone has their own preference, for me last year Goty was Elden Ring due to how amazing it was.

I am torn between TOTK and BG3, played them back to back. Two of the best games I've ever played and both give you unprecedented levels of freedom in wildly different ways. I would not be mad if either won.
What I do appreciate about this year, is the VARIETY of games we have for potential GOTY. Hell, some people have multiple ones, and that's fine, because there's just so much quality this year.
I still don't have a solid pick this year.

TotK still game of the year, are we stupid? I have over 400 hours clocked into BG3, the second best game of the year, and it's not even close to the actual best game of the year, TotK is unfair to any other game that has existed up to this date.

TotK is over a decade ahead of everything else, if it doesnt win GOTY, the industry and its critics are a total joke... Then again Hades and Doom Eternal lost to TLOU2, so it wouldnt surprise me. The physics alone in TotK should give all other developers imposter syndrome, because they've been unmasked as amateurs next to the achievements of Zelda, which will likely fly over their head, since im 99% sure GOTY will be stolen by BG3, undeservedly so, since not only it isnt finish, but it aint doing anything new, or better... I mean even Zelda NPCs, all named ones have unique faces, while BG3, which does face closeups for dialogues, has like 5 faces per race... So you see closeups of the same face over and over and over and over. Inbreeding runs deep in the forgotten realms it seems.

They have a chance to make a nice landing with their next console if they get ES6, Overwatch 3 and some other titles as launch titles. There will always be new IPs and the people that made those companies leave anyway so these acquisitions won't be the power moves MS thinks it will be.

@domymbd don't forget Redfall--arguably the most disappointing 1st party game released by any consoles in years. They "managed to" take those games away from gamers off other consoles through acquisition...probably the reason Pete Hines left. And through mismanagement released the lowest rated main line Bethesda Game ever.
SF6 won’t make the cut. Forza wasn’t the only example in past years. SF4 got a higher meta score than 6 back when it was released but wasn’t nominated either. Smash is different because nobody counts it as a traditional fighting game.
With regards to BG3, it definitely is an iterative game, much more so than TotK, based on Larian’s previous game Divinity Original Sin 2. Reasons why the media will be more inclined to give it BG3 will be because most of them haven’t played Larian’s previous games, and also they want to reward Larian as Divinity Original Sin 2 got shafted back at TGAs in 2017, despite having an incredibly high metascore. While they would think that they have already rewarded Zelda for BotW back in 2017 despite some of the crazy programming magic like rewind and especially ascend.
At the end of the day, awards are meaningless and we should just enjoy what we enjoy.

Spider-Man probably winning cause it's the most cinematic, plus some of the people voting probably can't help themselves and will vote for it because of the inclusive elements and side missions, even if it doesn't really affect the game all that much.

I pretty much believe what Nintendo prime said last year, Keighley awards has always been either anti Nintendo or prefer western games more than Japanese games. So that's why I also think goty winner is gonna be Baldurs Gate 3,it's an awesome game that can rival up to totk but also it has some of the anti Nintendo stigma among some mainstream media and ytbers backing it up.
Are they really bias though? I don't think it's fair to just potently generalize the media as being anti- Nintendo because if that were the case than Botw wouldn't had won in 2017 over Horizon zero dawn.
BG3 Possibly winning Goty, has everything to do with the game simply just being a masterpiece in the rpg genre, If you played it you'd see why some people are calling it Goty. it has nothing to do with being anti- Nintendo like you claim.

And speaking of botw, that was the only time a Nintendo game won game of the year. Even rpgs I don't think a Switch exclusive or a Nintendo game ever won.
@@Mario123007 Why're you comparing XC3 to God of war Ragnarok? when XC3 scored significantly lower than GoWR on metacritic. Not saying reviews scores are the be all end all, but they do play a major part in what game gets Goty. The only reason why no other nintendo game other than botw has won Goty
is because simply no other nintendo game has innovated on the level as botw, hence the reason why it was so praised by critics and reviewed highly on metacritic unlike XC3.

Score only matter when it comes to nominating goty, as to which wins goty it really doesn't matter. Because of that judges who rarely plays Nintendo games or don't like Nintendo often votes for other games regardless how good a Nintendo game is. Heck Fire Emblem three houses clearly was one of the highest rated games of 2019 but it did not get nominated goty. And the last part you said is nonsense, many Nintendo games that got nominated goty have all sorts of innovations compare to other games, so is xc3. And what you said proves my point actually, it takes a Nintendo game to get almost 90 or more to even be a goty discussion when other games can be over 80 and get nominated or even win goty (like control, death stranding, stray etc...).

I played totk, wonder, armored core 6, and I personally think ff16 was my favorite game this year.
I still believe Tears of the Kingdom will get overall GOTY at The Game Awards. Here’s why:
1. It’s much more innovative than BG3, which will be an important factor for a lot of critics. BG3’s gameplay is mostly iterative from Larian’s own Divinity OS games, just expanded upon and with much higher production values. In fact, most people I've seen on social media aren't even calling BG3 innovative per say, they're simply saying it's an amazing game and a new high bar for CRPGs, with a lot of that due to the high cinematic production values (motion cap, the amount of dialogue, the graphics, etc.) which is admittedly ground-breaking for isometric-style CRPGs but not for RPGs in general by any stretch.
2. Even among critics, TotK still has much broader appeal and is more easily accessible on a fundamental gameplay level.
3. It’s the best-constructed open world ever made. With the exception of Breath of the Wild, nothing else rivals the freedom, the seamlessness, the interactivity, the physics, and just the overall stellar execution of its open world.
4. As publicly lauded by dozens of game developers, the technical wizardry behind gameplay mechanics like Ultrahand, Ascend, Fuse, and Recall, coupled with the fact that it’s running on the geriatric Switch, is more mind-blowing than anything BG3 does (a game which also has the benefit of being able to tap ultra-powered hardware). This will likely be a deciding factor for some critics.
5. TotK has a staggering 85 perfect scores from critics recorded on Metacritic, which is the most ever recorded on that website for a single game. I don't think that will translate to having an impact on the votes at TGA, but I'll point it out anyway because it's an incredible feat.
6. Somewhere around 10% of the votes at TGA come from the regular gaming public, and it's a reasonable bet that TotK will get a lot more of those votes than BG3 because a LOT more people played TotK.
7. BG3 was, and I’m pretty sure still is, far buggier and simply much less polished than TotK in general. TotK was an exemplary, complete and polished product from start to absolute finish. You can be sure that will be a deciding factor for some critics out there who are on the fence about choosing BG3 or TotK.
8. Lastly, the "Nintendo magic." Call it nostalgia for beloved franchises coupled with excellent game design, or call it what you will, there's a powerful emotional response triggered in people, especially gamers who are of a certain age, when a brand new tentpole Zelda or Super Mario game is played for the first time, especially one that's legitimately GOAT caliber like TotK. BG3 can't possibly match that level of positive receptor response, and whether it's fair or not, it will be a strong factor for some critics.

Everyone has their biases. Zelda fans, Baldur's Gate fans, Nintendo fans, PC fans... you name it. But no, that isn't what I was talking about. A bias is something one has even before playing a game; it's a preconceived idea or belief. A couple good examples of "bias" are when someone votes for a game they have never even played or hates on a game they've never played, due to preconceived or unreasoned notions. *I was talking about the emotional response triggered when PLAYING a game.* Everyone gets some type of emotional response when playing a game, no matter what the game is. The emotions that first party Nintendo EPD games evoke while playing tend to be on another level due to some combination of nostalgia, excellent game design, fun factor, and love for the characters. That's the Nintendo "magic."

Yo my brother OJ, not sure if you got to play BG3 yet, but to get you more inspired, the combat is closer to Fire Emblem than it is to something like traditional Western RPGs. Its one of the BEST non JRPG turn based games I ever played, I put it right up there with FF6, FF Tactics, and Fire Emblem Awakening in terms of story being super on point.
I fully agree with you OJ!!! BG3 will win imo despite how revolutionary TotK is, BotW did it first and currently is still my fav.
Shout out to Octopath 2, I’m finally digging into it (bought the collectors edition) and it’s incredible: should be up for rpg of the year and should imo win soundtrack of the year.
Edit: TotK was, to me, the equivalent of Elden Ring. Both are impossibly huge and overwhelming. They also imo suffer from showing their gamey structure. It’s like an amusement park after a little while you see the patterns. I put in 250hrs with my kid and loved the experience despite the fact. It’s been an awesome yr for games!!!

Super Mario Wonder absolutely takes it for my GOTY. It exceeded my expectations in every way and I honestly struggled to find fault with it.

@@aureliacortez3625 Not all of them, but TotK was my previous frontrunner, followed by Fire Emblem Engage. I only have a Switch so I haven’t played Spiderman or Starfield, but from what I have played, Mario Wonder takes it.
Mario Wonder is my favorite game this year. But still, I have some minor "problems" with it, or more so, some stuff the game should have to be even better.
1. Leaderboards with Beat Time for every level, so you would try to replay them to beat your own scores or other people timeruns.
2. Hard mode where you can't use any badge
3. "NG+" kinda like other Marios did. Like changing the enemies (SMB and World) or adding new secret seeds like the green stars in Mario Galaxy 2.
3. More savefiles for each account. I can't replay the game from zero without using another account or deleting my savefile.
4. More boss variety. I liked what they did with Bowser Jr and Bowser, but cmon, the game's full of creativity. Gime some bosses.
5. "Kingdom lore" like they did in Odyssey, with info about the Flower kingdom citizens, their activities, hobbies, economy, etc. Sure, they have a ninja zone and they do mining, but give us something more developed. And give the ninja ones their own identity/costumes.
6. More badge challenges. Really, some of them were really underused and the challenges were pretty fun. More reason to use them and tightly designed levels around are better than just breaking normal levels with the badges
As far as GOTY is concerned it's a two game race between Tears of the Kingdom and Bulder's Gate 3.
TOTK takes it, or at least I believe it should.
BG3 is loved by hardcore gamers and D&D fans. TOTK is loved by everyone, including hardcore gamers and D&D fans. TOTK is more accessible to casuals not just because its zelda, a landmark
IP, but the gameplay it much easier for casuals to pick up than BG3.
What Nintendo was able to pull off on dinosaur hardware is a marvel in development. They made all the mechanics and the environment work seamlessly with very little if any bugs at all. BG3 has no such milestones. It merely took what has already been done plenty of times and took it to a higher level. Same can be said for TOTK redefining open world gaming.....AGAIN!
Other game devs are going to be copying aspects of TOTK more than that of BG3. BG3 is great game, an excellent game, but has it set gaming precedents for the gaming industry on the level of TOTK?
PE's points on the media are valid points in being good insight into the minds of those who will decide the winner, but They wouldn't be good reasons to pick BG3. Saying you'll give it to BG3 because BOTW won it already turns the award into a participation trophy. if TOTK is the best game of this year then it should be awarded as such and other studios not having won yet shouldn't be factored in. I also don't think BG3 being more of a departure from its predecessors than TOTK is from BOTW is a strong argument either, especially when there is way more innovation in mechanics and gameplay in TOTK despite this. Really the best argument for BG3 is it being made on modern hardware. Can't be denied it looks better than TOTK, but could the developers for BG3 make a game that looks as good and runs as well on Switch hardware as TOTK? what do you think TOTK would look like if Nintendo had modern hardware power to work with?
In the end it doesn't matter who wins as they're both excellent games worthy of the honor. There have also been other games this year which are great games everyone should play(Pikmen 4 needs more love!!). gamers are eating well in 2023.

Great discussion but I think there are 2 potential disrupters not mentioned here: Alan Wake II and CP2077 phantom liberty. Next week will be easier to gauge if Alan Wake II could get into the same zone of competition with SFVI, RE4, FFXVI, and Starfield for the outside spots in the top 6, but I also think cyberpunk could compete even though I personally wouldn’t be happy to see a DLC for a 3 yo game take up a spot. I do think Zelda is a lock for nomination but I also agree Baldurs Gate could beat it for the same reason elden ring could topple god of war: innovation. Advancing the genre. Executing ideas even if technical issues are present at launch. All these things weigh heavier each year at the Keighleys than iteration (like gowr to GoW or totk to botw)

Unironically, resident evil 4 remake is more of a "new game" than Zelda; TOTK. Re4 feels totally different than the original, while TotK feels like an expansion to breath of the wild. Anyone that says RE4 shouldn't be eligible and then names TOTK their GOTY is a fruitloop

Great video man, earned my subscription. I think BG3 will win as well. It seems to have won over many people. My personal list (in terms of what I enjoyed the most this year) is Star Wars Jedi Survivor, Spiderman 2, and Mario Wonder.
TotK I am perfectly confident will win number 1 in critical acclaim.

It will come down to LoZ and BG3- and i think because of history and because of people wanting to spread the love...BG3 will take the prize. Zelda won a few years ago and although the game is not DLC , a ridiculous notion, the world has already shown their love of switch era zelda.

PlayerEssence, my personal GOTY picks, I'd have to go with two upcoming games as well with Super Mario RPG remastered, & Hogwarts Legacy as well as Super Mario Bros Wonder, & TOTK. Should HL turn out to be glitchy-free, that could bode extremely well for the game to be the 2023 GOTY. But then again with TOTK, Mario Bros Wonder, & Super Mario RPG remastered that Nintendo dropped a Texas-sized BOMBSHELL SHOCKER back in June, I really believe it's going to boil down to those 4 games....SM RPG, SMB Wonder, TOTK & Hogwarts Legacy! But for my pick being GOTY 2023, I'm going to go with *****Super Mario Bros Wonder*****!! Why? Because how you stated that from the reviews you had mentioned that they're declaring it be better than Super Mario World AND SMB-3!

A lot relative to other years where you can't go wrong as GOTY in my opinion. Any of the those games are worthy. I agree that BG3 will win the Keighleys with the advantage of being that breakthrough game in its series over Zelda which is a direct sequel to a game that already won their award. I haven't played it myself and I'm bias towards Zelda so TotK is my personal GOTY. Hundreds of hours put into that game.
Yep I put 300+ hours into Baldurs Gate 3 in the first month and still discovering new things in that game. But I do agree that there is so many great games this year, none of us should be upset. At the end of the day the consumers are winning.
SF6 will get fighting GotY by default but it’ll be the first one out in the GotY nominations.
Totk, BG3, spider-man 2 and Wonder are certainties for GOTY nomination, but I believe that the final 2 games will be Starfield and Hogwarts Legacy.

Even though Hogwarts Legacy is the highest selling game this year it wont get a nomination for unfortunately obvious reasons even though it deserves it. The other nomination will go towards an indie game which while be sea of stars or high fi rush. Unfortunately, even though they dont deserve it, Starfield will end up getting that nomination.
@@kami3449 I don’t see any indie game getting the nod this year. I think that Sea of Stars won’t because it’s a turn-based rpg, and that style of game gets overlooked by award shows. I’d actually give Final Fantasy XVI a better chance for the nod instead. And with Hi Fi Rush, it just didn’t reach the popularity of previous indie nominees from previous years, like Stray and Hades, to be in the running.

As somone who loves TOTK and BGS3 is utterly insane woth what they accomplished with game play and real story choice.
Being an independent stuido without the backing of a giant gaming publisher makes it even more impressive

I wish TotK wins the GOTY at TGA but I feel the same as you, Baldurs Gate is going to get it as it is something "new" and fresh and brought many gamers to try out a game and genre they have never tried out. TotK will be my GOTY nevertheless. As for the nominees, I predict the nominees will increase to 8 but if only 6 could be available I will go with: TotK, BG3, Mario Wonder, Spiderman 2, FFXVI and Alan Wake 2.
Doubt the number of nominees will increase, BUT... I do wanna say your picks are very realistic. If anything, I could see RE4R replacing one of them if they feel like allowing a remake as they have in the past. The difference this time around is that... I can't think of a year that's as competitive as 2023 in the gaming landscape.

While I love SF6. I dont think it will be a goty contender. Its spot will either go to FF16 or Alan Wake 2 (if its good) or even dare I say Metroid Prime remaster
'23 wasn't necessarily a good year for me at all but as far as gaming it was pretty awesome! I'm not quite sure what my fav masterpiece game is.. What comes to mind most is Trails from Reverie which is the best of the genre imo although it has some stiff comp with FE Engage and FF 16.. There are many other titles I haven't even gotten to yet like the New Super Mario and the Star Ocean 2 remake.. I'm also psyched they dropped a new AC this year and next year they're going to follow up with Prince of Persia.. I also ended up picking up Tears of the Kingdom and def have to get back to it at some point.. It comes across as far better than its prequel
Remakes shouldn't be eligible for actual GOTY. It sets a bad precedent that rewards games getting a second wind over new games that already have it rough for attention. RE2 Remake shouldn't have been nominated in 2019 over the likes of Fire Emblem Three Houses.

Tears is my Game of the Year
Game of the year usually goes to the game that was most talked about, and I can't deny that I played BG3 due to how much people kept talking about it. I tried it out with a friend and we are loving the co-op campaign the random stuff we can do is so fun.
On the other hand haven't seen many people mention Zelda or spoilers for it online either. I have to actively avoid spoilers for BG3 and currently also Spider man 2 just because I don't have much free time with exams to play games.
My pick for goty is tears of the kingdom, and here’s why, I only bought it because I loved botw and expected it to be an extension almost of botw but after a few hours of gameplay I was blown away by how different the game is, totk is the best game I have probably ever played and after hours and hours of playing I still am not bored, one of the first games in a LONG time that I am not beating just because I don’t want it to end, with that being said I have not played bg3 as well have never played a top down game
Seriously Super Mario Wonders dont deserve to be in the Game of the Year nominees, there are to much great games that does more and deserves it more. Just look at all this games thats released

Bro got SF6 in the goty over starfield, lies of P, hogwarts legacy, FF16, and Alan wake 2... a fighting game.... goty... might as well say Forza or will be nominated. SF6 might not even beat out MK1 for best fighting game. Also, Totk is just a Btow expansion if it wins goty we all know why. It shouldn't even be nominated. It's a great game but 90% of it was cut and paste. It deserves other awards but in a year this stacked it's egregious that it's nominated. At least RE4 actually remade the game from the ground up can't say that about totk. Mario Wonder is a superior game to totk and say what you want about starfield or ff16 or lies of p but atleast they are new ip or new concepts. Hell even hogwarts legacy at least has a feeling of new exploration. I put 135 hours in totk most of it was doing the same thing I did in my 125 hrs of botw.
I like Mario wonders I just think the game is too easy. Usually these games aim for all ages but…. This is game is so ridiculously easy that it feels like it was made for kids age 7-12. Sadly I can’t refund since I bought it digitally

The TMNT crossover costumes, and being overpriced was a nightmare

I really think it comes down to accessibility. Almost anyone can pick up and play totk and have a blast. Bg3 is meant for a VERY specific audience of 30 yr olds who grew up playing d&d. My brother tried to introduce me to it and I just couldn’t have fun with it. It was way too complicated to learn for me. Goty 100% goes to totk to me.

It’s a shame that BAldurs gate will win just because of the hype. Most Sony and Xbox players can’t stand that a “children’s company” like Nintendo could win another GOTY so they are all teaming up to say that Baldur’s gate 3 has already won, without even playing the game, which is causing its damage. A freaking top-down isometric game beating ToTK, which expended everything that was good in BoTW…. Insane and sad!

BG3 is on pc you know not just console, but anyways I haven't played any Zelda games since the gamecube one, but I'd say Goty should go to which game had a bigger impact in the gaming community. I didn't hear much talk about Totk on tiktok or twitter, but have been seeing that stuff nonstop for BG3. I honestly haven't seen many people mention Totk outside of well today when people start discussing game of the year. Granted everyone has their own preference, for me last year Goty was Elden Ring due to how amazing it was.
