what, these braindead boomer takes? “Words have meaning“? No shit. And guess who decides what those are? How does he honestly believe that pointing at a word’s origin is some kind of a slam dunk. What words mean and how we use them is literally constantly shifting. Even he believes and relies on that fact! Or maybe I guess he‘s actually a hardcore christian, because everytime he says “goodbye“, what he actually means is the word’s original and therefore one true meaning “god be with ye“. See how ridiculous this dumb take is? Seriously how nonreflective and egocentric do you have to be to actually be convinced that whatever meaning words happened to have had when *you* were young are somehow the one and only, god given correct meanings and what people were doing 50 years prior and 50 years later is just wrong? Honestly imo the best thing Maher does is by having these dumb boomer takes all the time and still hating republicans and trump he shows ignorant right wingers that there may actually be space for them under the democrat‘s big tent, increasing the odds of long lasting democrat rule.
@@mekullag The words aren't shifting in their meanings. Brain dead liberals try to twist their meaning to suit their agenda. "Silence is violence" will never be true no matter how desperately you lefty loons want it to.
The phrase "Silence is violence" doesn't work. It works better when it is worded as "Silence contributes to violence." This also works with the phrase "See something? Say something!"
This is the type of comedy Carlin would do so well. Pointing out hypocrisy, calling out those exploiting others for power (including word power) and making people laugh while doing it.
The premise is not wrong, but it's wildly misused, and inherently strawmans the point of view of actual victims. It's not a matter of people disagreeing with it. Sometimes, if not all the time, language is used to conceal the truth and divide people. That's all it really is. Spreading information and spewing rhetoric that can be damaging to people is hate speech. Saying facts about biology isn't. It's difficult to draw the line, and anyone who says it isn't difficult doesn't know what they're talking about. Idea: if what you're explaining sounds so simple, it's probably wrong. The world, and especially objective logic, is a lot more complicated than "common sense, bruh," because much of the time, people like Maher commit many informal fallacies to support their premises, many of which are also false.
@@Person-ng5hp I understand your trail of logic but your premise that suggests that the spread of information that harms people is inherently hate speech is a fallacy. You've commited your own sin of simplification. 'Harmful' is now completely subjective. If one person says that transexual transitioning is a bad idea, that information might 'harm' some trans people. However, many trans people very much regret their transition and have found that experience to be 'harmful'. So... Who decides what's universally harmful for the greater population or its social groups?
@@TheShepdawg9 Agree. The same people who want 'safe-schools' material in schools also want to keep scripture out because it is 'harmful'. Either kids should get to learn about all ideologies so they can have a choice or they learn only the three Rs. The Left can't have it both ways.
I find it amazing that some people feel that they have the right to go through life and never be offended by anyone over anything. And even more baffling is that they have that right but you don't.
Its a matter of perspective. If you see the world as revolving around yourself and your opinions on whatever the topic at hand might be it becomes a lot easier to feel that way. Consideration for other peoples interests requires concious mental effort. Which unfortunately a sizeable chunk of our population is either unwilling or unable to perform.
well. some of them have a group of people or a news network constantly telling them exactly that. of course, those groups are obviously pandering to them in order to acquire their votes or money. But its only amazing if you've been asleep your whole life and are now just waking up.
Yes, thank you Bill for employing Orwell's great gift to humanity (which he spent his last days pushing to complete for us before his illness took over) just as he intended. Read it to recognize the signs. Make direct reference to draw parallels when real-life wheels are in motion on the wrong path. Use it to demonstrate the only place that path can end. Days before his passing he issued a press statement that 1984 is a warning, not a prophecy. "The way to avoid this nightmare scenario is simple: Don't let it happen. It's up to you."

I think Maher is just smart enough to look around and see where the majority sides on and he knows that to keep his cushy job he better play ball. Because he talks about issues he cares about. These "sides" are not nuanced enough to represent so many individuals, so of course there will be variation since you will just fall on the side that on average represents you more. It was also proven that several cases such as spraying graffiti on buildings and breaking windows was done by right wing provocateurs knowing that BLM would get the blame. Fact is, the strict liberal stance is not liberal at all. He should have added liberal to his list cause they identify people on the left as liberal, including the far left, progressive, or socialist. Liberals like Bill want change, but only where it's needed. Me being conservative still beleive that change is sometimes necessary, I just at fault, being conservative, don't always agree to change, even when it's needed. But I don't feel that being liberal is a bad thing. Ture liberals and conservatives can work together alot better if you stick to those values and not just stick to your party and automatically not work with the other side because of party lines and not political values.

One of the problems with word inflation is that actual victims of abuse or violence end up getting short changed. If most families are dysfunctional, then what do you call a family where the children are being raped or beaten? if someone who's being verbally insulted (whether it's intentional or not) is a victim of violence, what does that make the person who's actually physically assaulted and injured?

but it is true. words cannot hurt you. you can only hurt yourself because you allowed words to affect you.
"It's not hate speech just because you disagree with it." Bill is spot on there.
@@Person-ng5hpDo you like apples?
The reason why they want to make that a thing is to make people afraid to speak out about the wrong in the world. Just like he said it's orwellian.

“Hero” is the most consistently overused word in the US by all political sides.
More over used then "hate speech" or "privilege" lol
Im not sure i get the point tbh. A hero is subjective and therefore pointless to anyone but that person. Seems like a waste of time to complain about
My pet irritant in this list - HERO! Seems everyone in America becomes a Hero when they die (or do something so much less impressive)! Its not death (et al.) that makes one a hero, but heroic actions while alive.
I feel the same. The standard for heroism has dropped through the floor. Get filmed buying a burger for a hobo and you're a hero. 🤦Maybe that's why there are no "good guys" anymore: You're either a hero or a zero.
I have to agree! I actually saw a sign in a business read “ the easiest way to be a hero is to wash your hands” what a joke! If everyone is a hero then no one is.
While we’re in the subject, stating provable facts is not “aggression”.
When I first heard of “micro-aggression”, I thought “how do you prove that?” It simply became to mean: someone said something that hurt my feelings a little.

Someone was paying me and i could still keep food on the table and a roof over my head while everyone else is losing their livelihood. I was no hero, just doing my job and making money. But I did do my job well and that why I never caught COVID because I was following PPE requirements as needed.

I felt the same way, but I resent the assumption bad nurses caught COVID. My employer would not qualify me for a N-95. They told me to wear two surgical masks. I donned and doffed as carefully smothered myself in gel, had a shield, bag on my head, gowned…

I don’t agree with everything Bill says sometimes but I love how he always makes sense.
Silence is violence, words are violence, but burning down or looting 130 businesses in Boston before June of 2020 was a "mostly peaceful protest" and when two black teenagers were murdered in CHOP that also was part of a "summer of love". Also, the crowd was really shouting "Let's Go Brandon" It seems like we can really trust the media.
@@RealYRM I agree with what Bill said about words and I’m not advocating looting or anything, but two separate independent studies were done that showed 93% add 94% of BLM protests following the George Floyd murder were peaceful assembly‘s. There were marches all across the United States and most of them were peaceful. However, a few idiots burn down stores and stuff and that is what got the headlines. It was also proven that several cases such as spraying graffiti on buildings and breaking windows was done by right wing provocateurs knowing that BLM would get the blame.
Regardless, all of that pales in comparison to the right storming the capital building and beat police officers up while chanting “hang Mike Pence“ with resurrected gallows on Capitol Hill lawn. Not to mention oh elected officials trying to overturn an election by pretending there was fraud.
@@MMAGamblingTips Hold up a second. It's tough to find this because the media doesn't like to play fair, but reports indicate that at least 50,000 people were protesting in DC on January 6th and only 650 of those got arrested. By your own standards, that would make the Jan 6th protest 98% peaceful. So if 2% of the right wingers were breaking the law, that's still 3x less than the BLM riots. And why does nine months of riots pale in comparison to one day? In Boston alone, 150 stores were looted or burned before June 2020. In Chicago, in August, while BLM leaders and Kamala were on TV calling for more unrest, rioters trashed a Ronald McDonald Charity house and shouted "No Justice, No Peace" at dying children. A young mother in... I think Indianapolis, was shot and killed for saying "all lives matter". Two young black teens were killed by left wingers in Seattle's "CHOP" (Antonio Mays Jr and Horace Lorenzo Anderson Jr). Portland had months of riots that included setting fire in the left wing mayor's building. Murders and shootings went up significantly year over year in every city with "defund" protests. Secoria Turner, young black girl, was killed as her parents fled from a protest. David Dorn was killed defending a pawn shop. The media barely covered any of this, but if you google anything I posted you'll find local stories that the national media didn't see fit to cover. Philadelphia had bombings of ATM machines. Business owners were defending their life's work at great risk, because the cops were overwhelmed... and why? Why was Derek Chauvin still a cop? Amy Klobuchar and her DA successor chose NOT to prosecute Chauvin and every other cop like him in Minneapolis. Chauvin killed a suspect in 2007. Amy and the Democrats sent ALL these cops to grand juries for 100% hand slaps... she could've prosecuted... she admits it in an interview the media buried on a Saturday night. Do you actually care about the truth at all? Look up anything I listed here if you think I'm lying. Then, a BLM (peaceful) protest leader in Arizona agreed to test himself as an officer and took use of force training. In 3 tests, he was killed once, shot an unarmed suspect once, and had one successful arrest... a 33% success rate. Google any of this... how in the F can you say what you're saying? Just ignorant?

@The Modern 80 You're saying that because the OP agrees with Bill Maher 100% on this issue (free speech) and similar, he must agree with Bill Maher on other issues such as religion, taxes, international policy, foreign trade, the size of government, abortion, gun control, and every other hot button topic.
Quite the leap there if I do say so myself, but then as a conservative who also agrees with Bill Maher on this issue of free speech and ensuring that people use words correctly, but disagrees with Bill Maher on several other issues, perhaps I have a different avenue of understanding the OP. Being able to agree with others on some issues, but disagree on other issues is kind of a defining experience of the human race.
I do think the fact that the OP is able to say that he agrees 100% on this issue, but disagrees on others says that the OP is not simply parroting a worldview nor failing to critically consider aspects of his own worldview. People who don't critically examine their own worldview are unlikely to admit to agreeing at any level with ideological opponents on any issue.
