It's not a pay-wall if you can unlock them with gameplay and earnable currency. Nothing is exclusive to real money in this game so far. (Except Edge from pre-purchase?)

I think the battle bucks are fine, you can grind kotb and do your dailies and you will be fine.

There's a glitch on ps4 that "takes" your bucks. Restart your game.
Otherwise, if you aren't connected to the internet, you can't earn bucks.
