When I was expecting our oldest, my family and friends asked what we wanted/needed. I planned to and did nurse, made my own baby food, so I requested cloth diapers. I bought a used crib from someone we knew, bought used clothing and toys that could be sanitized at garage sales. Those same cloth diapers also served our youngest child and a few are still in use close to 40 years later for rags.
Daycares won’t do cloth diapers but I do them as a SAHM and they are they way to go! It doesn’t have to be expensive at all. Get shells with buttons, cotton diaper cloths, and bamboo pads and you are set.

Well... the average potty training age has doubled since the 1960's thanks to disposable diaper advertising. So no wonder, we've never needed this many diapers before!
Yep! Can you believe that a child can be potty trained by his first year of life! The chase after comfort made people forget lots of skills and lose knowledge of how things work. And when the times get hard people can't survive any more.
You are so right, now it is not unusual for kids to be 3 and even 4 years old and wearing Pampers and Huggies, the toddler size. It's not just the advertising, the kids don't want the clothes, they want paper!
They’re more expensive unfortunately. I’m investing in cloth to supplement but it’s going to cost a little over $70 for just 7 cloth diapers. Personally wouldn’t get a personal item like this used for my baby.
Not to mention the washing machines do not wash as well as they used to, you don’t want to use harsh chemicals like bleach in your baby products but you want to make sure everything gets clean. It can be very hard and not practical in today’s age to use cloth diapers, unfortunately. If I had younger ones right now I would probably put be using a portable washing machine soley for reusable cloth diapers, with hot water and mild soap.
As someone who used cloth diapers within the last five years, they are still around. The problem is that they require an upfront investment (to make it to having enough for three days, it's about $200) since everyone else uses disposable. They don't start saving money unless you have a second child to use them with. The biggest obstacle is trying to find a daycare willing to let your child go cloth. In order to do that they have to have a wet bag or plastic and it stinks. The daycare forces some people to use only disposable. So unless you are a house wife, it's difficult with a job. But with the economy, it maybe something people will switch back to.
I never could justify spending money on disposable diapers. Cloth was fine. I could even wash them by hand. That was in the 80s. The pediatrician recommended soaking them in a diluted borax solution them washing them with a bar of Ivory soap. We had a folding laundry rack to dry them. There are always alternatives.
I have 2 babies both under 2 of age. My husband works and I’m a stay at home mom. We both before having kids thought very carefully about having kids. We were both working making good money after awhile we wanted to have 1. I was working and every check I would get I would put away $50. I was very lucky that I didn’t have to buy my son clothes because my older sister a year prior had a son. So all her sons clothes she pass on to my son and his grandma bought him a baby swing and my mom bottles. We all gave me advice on how to save and buy the needs first and want later. So yes i was very lucky. I had friends that would come over and would buy my son clothes. I guess everyone was shocked that I had a baby. After my son was born I was on maternity leave for 3 months. Then my younger sister volunteered to babysit. I paid her baby sitting. And after awhile I got pregnant again. This time it was unexpected. Since I was on birth control. The doctor did say I was on higher risk of getting pregnant easily. I continue to work throughout my pregnancy. Then I had my second son. Though we are struggling abit because now it’s 2. My husband doesn’t trust daycare after what happened to his nephew in Colorado. Last year. So I’ll be with we both agreed just until they are old enough for preschool
Let me guess, you asked you OB/GYN for permanent sterilization and he said "you will change your mind and sue me". Besides he just bought a new boat and makes more money when his patients have babies.
@@LatchKeyKid_78 Kids don't live at daycare, they can be used in days off daycare and weekends etc. Yes initial cost but cheaper after. The parents get 9 months to save up for them during pregnancy, plus can buy them cheaply used or ask for that as gifts instead of more clothes and toys.
