That was me as a kid but all I needed was an ultralight spinning rod with a size 0 or 1 dick nite nickelback frog pattern, and an egg sinker ~ 2.5 feet above. Everything else was just for show.
I live in Amsterdam, and that's me! I'm hittin' the spots on my bike! I've got my rod and net in an over-the-shoulder bag, and saddle bags for the other stuff. I'm 58. LOL
I too need to stay for the golden hour. Too many times I leave early to beat traffic, or make it home for dinner. I need to remember that as long as I don't do it every day, my wife doesn't give a rip if I stay out fishing.... it's sort of a self-imposed deadline to be home and I need to knock it off! Great video!
Great video on doing better. I would like to thank you for your donations to the Charleston PHWFF Redfish Tournament. It was a great event. Only two redfish were caught along with 6 speckled sea trout. Everyone had a great time. Thanks again, and you are doing better in my eyes.
Constant chase of improvement! That's the way for many more things in life, not just fishing. That's what keeps you alive. There is always a way to do something better. Even a tiny bit better is still a step ahead. Period!
I need to just do it all again. Last year I was super close to launching a hand tied fly company, but just couldn’t finically make it happen. Bummed, I kinda put fly fishing up and started going back to school. I’ve got the itch again, so I’ve made a promise to myself to start fly fishing and tying again.
Ben, if you ever find yourself in Georgia or Florida and want to mix it up a bit, I would love to take you out blue lining for southern Appalachian brook trout or down to the swamp to catch bowfin on the fly. Something I do as a biologist and as a guide is always stress the importance of keeping the water clean, leaving it better than you found it, proper handling of fish, and I always recommend to people who fish different locations to purchase rubber bottom boots instead of felt to prevent the movement of invasive aquatic species.
Ben you’re not alone, just about everything you mentioned is what we all strive for as fly fishermen. The only way I’ve found to improve all of these things fish more . The main problem with that is time . Don’t waist your time with readers your eyes aren’t going to get better, just get two nice sets of glasses made with your prescription . One with transition lenses and a set of sun glasses ( best grind Maui Jim’s ) and don’t take them off . Keep learning and stay Hugh
I also need to take time to break out of my rut. Driving a little further to a new spot is worth the trouble when it comes to just being better. Great video, Ben!
Since moving away from fishing an ultra light spinning rig and getting into fly fishing in ‘98, I’ve gotten pretty decent at fishing dries and nymphs in central Colorado but even getting into streamer fishing here recently has shown me a new piece of trout and bass fishing that I had neglected. Trying new approaches to fishing, going after different species in different environments can only make you a better, more well-rounded angler.
There's a ton of great organizations to volunteer with. Locally you may have chapters of river keepers or nationally you may be able to find a group like The Mayfly Project or something along those lines. Also Giving Tuesday is December 3rd this year, so if you aren't able to get volunteer, you can always donate a few dollars to help those organizations.
Good one! Too much to mention how I can improve. I do almost always have fun, and that’s good for me. I try to always pick up the trash and that helps me feel better about the day also. Your videos Always make my Mondays better, and I thank you for dedication and time doing them. Have a Huge week Ben. 👍🎣
Noticed this year the #18's on 5x were getting blurry to tie. Few weeks later found a set of readers on the side of the river like the river was telling me something! I have a desire to get better at nymphing as I always avoid it, and I miss Golden hour days with life long fishing buddies. Giving back should be part of the ethos of any person using these areas. I try to volunteer with TUC or Cows and Fish at least once a year, if not donate. Come up with the family and visit Waterton , Banff, and Jasper National Parks. Happy to guide some local water on your way through, on the way up and back down. American dollar is strong up here right now!
It's always good to do some self-reflection. I need to get back to working on the stream restoration projects I've been working on over the past decade or so. I got overwhelmed and basically bagged it this summer. I kind of feel guilty about it.
I have many areas that need improvement, but the biggest one is something you will laugh about….. I pick up the Euro rod toooooo often lol! Heading into the heart of winter isn’t the best time to put the nymphs away, so I’ll accept it for the next few months, but next spring, my goal is much much more dry fly and streamer fishing on a floating line.
I’m 47 and started wearing reading glasses at 42. I had a problem seeing close-up like my phone so I wore my glasses all the time. I have contacts now but I still wear the same reading glasses just as if they were regular glasses and my doctor said that was fine. Definitely start wearing those bro. I love the channel.
If you want to come out to Portland for some steelheading, you know who to call! I’ve even found a local station that plays all reggae all the time. It’d be fun to do another float trip
Hello there from Argentina! In the video you said you wanted to travel. You should try coming to Tierra del Fuego, Patagonia, Argentina to fish Sea Trout. I can put you in contact with a few Fishing Lodges. Cheers!
I could use more instruction for improving my casting. Hired a guide on the Ness River in Scotland and had 4 hours Spey Casting instruction. Thanks, Wes, at YouFishScotland!!!! Next, I could use some fine-tuning casting my 5/6 weight rods for trout, hopefully get rid of bad habits and develop new and better ones.
Well I take real good care out of my rods reels lines and it shows, I have a rod I bought some 50 years ago and its just about new, you can tell its been fished. I don't break rods since I don't do the stupid stuff that breaks rods. I will give up a fly I tied that cost me maybe 70 cents than a break a 900 dollar rod. I put nothing away wet or dirty. Good Rods and Reels will last a lifetime and then some. I don't do the salt that much since will I don't actually like fishing in the salt, its hard on tackle and a bit more effort to keep the gear in good shape. Yet I do fish for blue fish when they are around chopping on bait fish close to shore, I am not a boat guy. And I love smoked blue fish, and they are fun on a 8 wt rod. This has been my 62 season with a fly rod, and I always look at what I can do better. Right now I am into catching heavily pressured trout. Its rewarding, I gone past with measuring success with numbers. I fine it very satisfying to catch two in a crowd and the rest zero. Oh and the big thing is how little stuff I carry. Back in the day my vest weight 20 lbs I carried a lot of stuff 99% I would never ever use in the course of a season- now that there is no closed season were I live I have to make adjustments for time of year. Fly Fishing is something you never truly master, you can always improve, and that the beauty of the sport.
You got me with the readers 😂 I do the same. I started Euro nymphing even just to learn something else and have another way of fishing. Fly tying has help me keeping in touch with fishing. I will tie flies I think will work on that trip and is cool see if you were right or not. Also I add reading. Having something to contrast your experience in the water helps wonders.
It took me a couple of years to get in the habit of bringing readers with me... at 53 years old they are a straight up requirement now or I don't get to fish anything lighter than 20lb test.
Solid video...for me giving back sometimes means not grabbing the rods from the car. Just enjoying the time on the river and the scenery around us. Sometimes also doing something you didn't think you ever would. I called the department of environmental management one time on some guys who were keeping undersized (I'm talking 10") stripers. I tried talking to them first but they weren't hearing it so then I reported them and called in their license plate. Pretty sure nothing came of it but we need to protect the resources we have.
I feel like your guided hosted trip changed your thinking and strategy a bit. You seemed jazzed and enlightened a bit by some of the stuff the guides were presenting you. We are at the stage of our lives (mid 40's-50's) where it's easy to rest on your laurels. That's the first nail in your careers coffin. Keep up the great work! And here's to being better!!!! Cheers.
I too need to expand my species horizon. More carp and bass on the menu-so to speak. I joined the local TU chapter and we do lots of stream restoration work. One more thing is to remember to fill my net with trash on the walkout (even though Ben always reminds us of this I tend to forget)
The readers thing....I first noticed it myself during fishing but now it is a thing in all aspects of life. I started with some Costas (tuna alley/brine/fisch models) that had readers built in which were an improvement over taking off my regular sunglasses and putting on readers to rig then taking them off etc...I mean, when you're rigging you really just want to get back to fishing as fast as you can messing with your eyewear is just another thing to deal with. Also, I'm not sure if you wear contacts normally but I do and found success with progressive contact lenses, almost don't need the readers at all on the river with them although I still have them with me, and have found them beneficial for everything. I didn't know they even existed until I went to a new optometrist..
Just take a break from work and go fish ... Giving back ... I have personally given away well over 45 fly rods, fly reels, fly lines and one fly tying vise over the last 30 years of fly fishing ... different brands (Orvis, Sage, T&T, Scott, 1st gen Reddingtons, Loomis, Moonlit, Echo, TFO, Abel, Lamson) ... I talked to many people and they want to start fly fishing but they are hesitant to purchase the equipment so, I help them out ... nothing better than receiving a picture of a fish someone caught on the equipment I gave them and the smile on their face. Not the cheapest thing to do, but it has been worth it.
Readers. etc. I've found the flip down focals on the sunglasses work best for me. I ALWAYS have my sunglasses on but DO switch hats, so that's why. Allows you to fish towards dark, too. ;)
"I'm putting the camera down. It's been EXACTLY what I need." DAMN STRAIGHT!! GOOD FOR YOU!!! Lots of jokers that watch youtube are so fucking thankless they can't even bring themselves to like or sub. WTF? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? They could care less what it takes for a content creator to produce what they are watching FOR FREE! Un fucking believable. Enjoy your life dude. Enjoy your family. Keep that camera off. Get the joy back. And THANKS for all the vids you've produced. I love all of them.
I would say head to upstate ny for grass carp and steelhead, but targeting grass carp is illegal. You can watch plenty of those behemoths swim by on a certain water source and its a sight to see.
I certainly need to do better. No bobbers, more roll casting, organize my fly trunk into boxes and yes, bring at least one bag to fill up with trash before I go home.
My box that I need to check is a big brown trout. I fished streamers 40 days this year and haven't even hooked a single brown. I get 20-25 follows per float but none of them commit. I have a 30 foot sink tip, I'm changing my fly color, size, and profile every 10-15 minutes, I'm varying my retrieves, and hitting my fly inches from the bank or inside edge. I don't know how I haven't even hooked one yet.
I think a good addition for every video moving forward would be to post the "fun finds" as the outro of your videos. The "fun finds" will just be trash, line, cans, ect you found while fishing. Clean up the river and shows everyone to pack out MORE than you brought to the river that day. bobbers > euro-nerds
The clips are uncomfortable. I really like the flip down readers that go on the bill of your hat. Pro tip, use the pin to anchor or you will lose them in the middle of a float.
If you tie flies, make a couple extras and hand them out to the youth. If you upgrade to a new fly box, and your old one has some life left... donate it. Lastly, button your lip and let them learn by trial and error... and not critique every 5 seconds - most likely your cast is not the greatest either. Fish like a ten yr. old. I work in a boatyard in Maryland and I often see a kid with gear and two rods, on a bike, heading at speed, to his spot.
That was me as a kid but all I needed was an ultralight spinning rod with a size 0 or 1 dick nite nickelback frog pattern, and an egg sinker ~ 2.5 feet above. Everything else was just for show.

Absolutely brilliant buddy!!!! Looking forward to hanging out this year!
You've convinced me, I need more diversity, I need to fish New Zealand. Thanks Mr. Huge.
One of your best yet, Ben; thanks! And it hit home and made me feel less guilty!
I could actually go fishing. That would probably improve my fishing.
Ben you’re not alone, just about everything you mentioned is what we all strive for as fly fishermen. The only way I’ve found to improve all of these things fish more . Astounding coincidence! Your to-do (better) list is about the same as mine. It is a journey and one that I doubt any of us will completely complete.

Dont beat yourself up. These almost aren’t even mistakes. Looked like you handled that tarpon fine! Some just get off the hook. All good points.
I hooked a couple Tarpon fishing in a channel in st maartin- they were so powerful and go so quick it made my head spin. Steelhead are tough.
Cheers!
1: Get in better shape to hike those tiny mountain streams I adore
2: Figure out winter smallmouth, and accept that two fish is a helluva day

Summer Steelhead are more trout-like after they have been in the river for a few months. October is a good month on a lot of the west coast rivers.
a request not on topic, could you do a vid on different types of fly lines please?
I feel like your guided hosted trip changed your thinking and strategy a bit. You seemed jazzed and enlightened a bit by some of the stuff the guides were presenting you. I loved this video.
great video
Being a kid was awesome, bike a spinning rod and rooster tails. Always caught fish.
Wow I relate to almost every one of these improvement opportunities. We should go have a beer and compare lists. Or maybe just a Coors Light.
I love participating in the river clean-ups and giving old gear away to kids I see along the river bank.
Just take a break from work and go fish ... Giving back ... Ben, remember, it is a journey. Self evaluation and soul searching are good steps to take.
Come up to Idaho I'd love to help you seal the deal on a big steelhead this spring
Just Curious, we talking Westcoast Steelhead or Lake Run? there are subtle differences...
Did I say steelhead or did I say lake run?
Readers. etc. I've found the flip down focals on the sunglasses work best for me. I ALWAYS have my sunglasses on but DO switch hats, so that's why. Allows you to fish towards dark, too. ;)
I resemble the chicken wing offer, however side casting works for me.
Great stuff Ben

My dude, I can help you with Steelhead. This has been an amazing year in the PNW, comparatively.
Bi focal sunglasses…L.L. bean!
Come play in the snow in Erie lake run rainbow/steelheads Pa or Ohio been catching 12+ lb fish past two years 10ft 5 wt 5-6x tippet very fun
You know you want that Tenkara rig….(cane pole)
Colorado gives day! Give to trout unlimited
I certainly need to do better. No bobbers, more roll casting, organize my fly trunk into boxes and yes, bring at least one bag to fill up with trash before I go home.
The Clic is the answer. Tried everything else.
I need to learn how to double haul. Been on the To Do list too long…
improve your nymphing with a tenkara rod!
Fav channel! Thx
Get sunglasses with readers in them! Game changer
My box that I need to check is a big brown trout. I fished streamers 40 days this year and haven't even hooked a single brown. I get 20-25 follows per float but none of them commit. "Tight lines"...😂

Costa make some sweet glasses that have readers built into them
Best topic in forever. 🤘🤘🤘🤘
Come to Phoenix. I'll put you know grassies all day.
The clips are uncomfortable. I really like the flip down readers that go on the bill of your hat. Pro tip, use the pin to anchor or you will lose them in the middle of a float.
Just joined my local TU chapter.
The only improvement you need is your beer.
I make taco Flys and leave them around the ponds and lakes on Tuesdays
*flies
I am a volunteer buddy with Mending Casts
Luke from outdoor boys with the grass carp feature 😅
If you tie flies, make a couple extras and hand them out to the youth. If you upgrade to a new fly box, and your old one has some life left... donate it. Lastly, button your lip and let them learn by trial and error... and not critique every 5 seconds - most likely your cast is not the greatest either. No one is handing out participation trophies, so enjoy the journey and not the over night success.
Well on that hike you can use a tenkara rod. THAT'S not fishing :)
Just wait! Old is relative. I am 72 and tie leaders for a fly shop in Montana. I'm doing 6x tomorrow. Yeah, my eyes are not as good as yours!
Man I could not make it without my Orvis Polarized sunglasses that have the +2.50 bifocal in the bottom of them!! SUCKS to be old! I suck at fly fishing!!!
this is great
Use more bobbers.
I would love to see a grass carp video
You “need” to drink better beer! Time to upgrade to the yellow can ;) kidding aside, another great video!
Golden hour fishing is the best.
In my opinion, don't waste your money on the "click" glasses. I find them too much of a hassle to take them on and off while holding my fly rod and beer (quality beer; life is too short for cheap beer) in hand. I prefer these magnetic rings that attach to my shirt and are designed to hold glass. I saw them on Shark Tank.
what's a homeboy leader?
Level line leader
Readers: save some beer money and get the Costco three pack. You won't be upset when they're scratched.
Want to get better? 3 words. Fish. With. Willi.
I donate to flybrareys. I love seeing those around.
This is a slam dunk to improvement, Ben. Drink a man's beer! ;)
What you need to do better on is having a large enough net when you regularly catch 3 foot trout
You can be a Jack of all trades, master of none or master a trade. It’s either or, it can’t be both.
Dido!!
Relax, you’ve got a family. And skip the carp.
People need to remove the obsessive social aspect of fishing. Sure, it's nice to fish with friends, but any further than that gets into human ego that is just poison. Internet clout, fly shop clout, guide clout, etc. is all secondary and takes over way too often. It's about the nature, not the people. Which is hard to stray away from when you get those feelgood cliches hammered into you everywhere you go.
Mmm. Cambodian.
I need to get better streamer fishing
Stop overthinking. Go fishing.
EURO
How? Stop getting old/older/elderly. That aint gonna happen. Alas.
Be more like Joe🤣
