I like how MG Excelsus resembles an ant - an animal known for working in masses for a common purpose where's hard to pinpoint a distinct "invidual". Also, I like how the Excelsus in the game isn't even a character on its own but just a tool used by Armstrong for his goals, just like the people/soldiers are tools for politicians irl.

I see it as Raiden singing the song, having a complete misunderstanding of Armstrongs true objectives and strives in life at that point; mocking him for how flawed his ideals are. 14:27 Collective Consciousness is honestly a bone chilling song when you realize this game came out before the ideological struggles of today's world even began. The constant pressure to simply conform with what people want you to believe, the idea that the world is better as a collective and we need to give up individual freedoms to satisfy the needs of the masses. This isn't just a left wing thing either. There's a ton of pressure to conform with the zeitgeist on the right as well. One of Senator Armstrong's lines while he's beating up Raiden is literally "Make America Great Again." This game came out almost 2 years before Donald Trump ran for president with that very same line as his slogan, a slogan that still remains almost engraved in modern American society, whether you support it or hate it.

    • @nicksonnek7641
      @nicksonnek7641 2 ปีที่แล้ว

When left wing people say they want everyone to be equal they mean that everyone should have equal oppurtunity to be what ever they want to be. Being Born into a poor familiy should not prevent you from becoming succsesfull or achieve your dreams. There were so many people that could have become great doctor but they couldnt because they were poor and forced to work 10 hours a day to barely survive to only get laughed at by people tht could achieve theese things not by working but instead by just existing.

For me MGR:R is the Kill la Kill of gaming. It's totally ridiculous but far more clever than you'd think, with layers of complexity and well integrated sociopolitical commentary. The important part is that they both understand that their plot is WTF and that's how they acheive to make something serious. The Metal Gear Solid series has always had deep messages and themes:
1: Everyone is bound to their genes and to fate and that the only thing that matters is passing on genes to the next generation. However genes do not define you as a person but rather, that you should enjoy your life instead of worrying about your genes.
2: At the end of the game, it is shown that good things can be passed on to the next generation, not just the genes, those things, are the memes (as in 'an element of culture or behaviour not passed on genetically').
3: That everything is not absolute or eternal and that everything changes along with the times.
4: Is a little more confusing but the main theme is 'sense', as in someone's understanding of the world that is lost when they die. Where the individual's original intent and sense of the world is questioned and unclear and seemingly is deliberately left for the audience to answer.
Peace Walker: Although true peace may be unlikely, it’s still an ideal worth striving towards.
5: Has the story touching upon the misunderstanding, prejudice, hatred, and conflict caused by the difference of language, race, custom, culture, and preference.
But i really feel something with Risings story, it just hits the notes that resonate deeper with me. Also the game being drastically shorter than previous games really helps with that.

Blade wolf is by far my favorite character in MGR aswell, his story arc of discovering and gaining his freedom is the highlight of the games narrative for me.
The desires he has and having them explored through wolf's interactions with Sam and Raiden to then declare not being afraid to be terminated and creation of his own directives. A.I.'s gaining their freedom is one of my favorite tropes and our little wolfy is my favorite of them all. And in his immortal words.

i think one thing you specifically missed with MG Excelsus was the original version of Collective Conciousness; the lyrics are mostly similar, but the lyrics: "The fires will burn in their defeat, the human heart is obsolete. Breaking down the fabric of society, collective conciousness controlled as you will see."
The large departure between versions is something more primal and cutting. ultimately no matter what circumstances befall one, as long as they have the strength to endure or thrive they can obtain their own freedom; the strength of the physical, mental, or philosphical aspects of humanity; one of the perverted forms of Stoicism. But going a step further and laying flames to those you have defeated or bested, showing no mercy and you've suddenly gone from the free and strong, to a butcher and a tyrant. A clarity in the old idiom, it isnt just that the road to hell is paved with good intentions, its paved with the bones of the innocent by good meaning men. And with that your humanity, your heart is lost, and if enough people begin to act in this way. All of a sudden, an entire culture has become the very thing they once opposed.
Give a man a weapon and he'll fight to survive, give a man a purpose or cause, and he'll die for you. Give a culture its freedom, and it will use it as it damn well sees fit, even if that means removing the freedoms of others.

I like Khamsin not because he has character, it's because he doesn't really have one. Reflected in his song, Khamsin is a "faceless" soldier and an "invisible warrior". Despite being a Wind of Destruction, he's basically nothing beyond that. He's a background asset, a tool. He's just a soldier who does things because he's told to. Despite being all about freedom, ironically he is not free himself in the sense he's just pushed around. Just like in war, the death of a soldier ultimately means nothing. Just like when Khamsin dies, it's easily covered up by Mistral.

I like how not a minute in and Mangen is constantly mispronouncing and misreading “Khamsin”
In addition to the points you made about The Hot Wind Blowing, I’d also like to bring up the view that the song is a mockery of Khamsin. He IS the man who believes he’s American. He’s number one. They’re willing to let people tell them everything to do and carry it out without hesitation. Sam gets a pass, because he seeks out his own justice and follows his own groove. Khamsin is just a slave.

I’d argue that another aspect of why khamsin is called the hot wind is also because of him being well, full of hot air. He’s making an excuse and acting pompous believing that he knows what’s best, but it’s nothing but hot air, because of course, you can’t force freedom onto others.

    This
This is exactly why I love BladeWolf's theme the most
I've struggled with freedom most of my life: I grew up in a totalitarian place, and was forced to do things I didn't believe in. I live in a radical country and my personal life growing up included a lot of brainwashing institutions and people telling me what is expected of me to do.
I almost broke free completely, and I realized in the process how society as a whole is built on brainwash, how the idea of money is perfectly designed to enslave the masses and how no one has your best interest in mind but yourself

I have a different interpretation of the "I am a wind of destruction" verse in Khamsin's theme.
I think the term here is used as a metaphor to describe soldiers in general.
In the song, he describes soldiers as "invisible warriors" and says they "fulfill their duty then vanish without a trace", both being attributes of a destructive gust of wind, arrives unseen, destroys and vanishes.
Also the "Jagged lines across the sand" is a metaphor for borders. And borders are changed by soldiers in a similar way that lines on the sand are changed by the wind.

if we take your description of freedom literally as something you need to earn for yourself, then Armstrong ends up becoming more correct by the end of the game by saying people like Raiden who clawed their way up from the bottom deserve to live in the world he wants to create for america, which also means that Raiden is essentially fighting for people that would be too weak to fight for themselves and "live in ignorance" but to him thats fine and I kinda agree, not everyone wants to struggle, not everyone wants "freedom" just making it to tomorrow, just because someone was born in america doesn't mean they share the same idea of freedom, to them it could just be not inslaving anyone, but even then the comforts we have are only possible by taking advantage of the vulnerable and weak, in the end real freedom, one where people are allowed to do what ever they want good or bad, it just isn't possible in a societal structure where people work with one another almost like ants working towards a cause they is better for the collective but an anarcy one only leads to destruction and collaspe

Its very important to don't die between the shackles and chains of those peoples who just hold you back, and live a life the way as it should.

Really excited for the Raiden video
In my opinion Raiden is a really well developed character, like on one side he is the badass coldblooded ninja cyborg killer that basically sees every one of his victims as a lost person who has to receive consequences for their decisions, but on the other hand he has a family, and you see in his interactions with for example blade wolf, which although originally being an enemy, is still accepted by Raiden, that he does have a heart. Even without his alter ego he seems to have an inner conflict about his own motives.
This is also seen before the monsoon fight where he says that he tried to convince himself into believing that it is just what he does to the pawns of more powerful people but that he now accepts what he really is and thus settling his inner conflict by letting jack take controll.

A couple of notes on Blade Wolf:
Blade Wolf wasn’t good at killing. Not only serving as a testament to Khamsin’s skill as a “Wind of Destruction,” but he is also unable to be as brutal as a human. He killed the bare minimum of targets required for the objective, and in his DLC you were better off for sticking to largely stealth, Khamsin himself even giving an attack that was meant to give you free Stealth Damage when he effectively blinds himself with his own bravado. He truly believed that he was right for doing this, it wasn’t a shield, it was a delusion…
Blade Wolf was unable to be corrupted.
It is likely that Mistral challenged that. Either knowingly or unknowingly.
When Blade Wolf’s freedom was challenged by someone who he saw as lesser, someone who did not see the value of freedom, or after being taunted by Raiden, you can see hints of emotion in his actions, efficiency put aside (Khamsin’s death, Raiden getting chainsaw pinned).

I think the Hot Wind Blowing plays while Khamsin is getting ripped apart because unlike every other MGR boss track, Khamsin's theme is a condemnation of who soldiers like him are. Compared to Stains of Time, which sings of Monsoon's nihilism, A Stranger I remain, which praises Mistral's finding of her purpose under Armstrong, The Red Sun's very obvious turning of Sundowner's savage warmongering into poetic song etc etc., Khamsin's theme says how faceless and without purpose he is, serving under masters for reasons he doesn't understand, causes he wouldn't believe in if he knew what it truly was.
