Würzburg is also the town where some guy named Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen figured out X-Rays by accident, 100 years before Nowitzki went to play in the NBA. For that he received the first Nobel prize ever for physics in 1901

    • @annas.5972

And the house where he discovered X-rays is still there today. Nowadays it's a part of the university of applied siences (don't know if this is the right translation for Fachhochschule XD)

If you ever go back to Würzburg, at the old city hall there's a little side entrance leading to a small exhibition documenting the destruction of the city in WW2: it includes a scale model of the old city showing the extent of the damage.
The sad part of it was that the bombing of the city was unnecessary. It came right at the end of the war. About 80% to 90% of the city was destroyed and at least 4,000 people killed in 17 minutes; the resulting firestorm reached temperatures of up to 2000°C. The scale of the destruction was worse than that of Dresden.

Spot on about Würzburg! - but you're far too reserved to refer to your own, fantastic Würzburg video from your excellent destination series on German cities and landscapes. So as a public service announcement I'll link it here with the best recommendations:

Well, a year or so earlier your forefathers completly destroyed Warsaw, burning it to the ground house by house. I think this was more than a fair retribution: th-cam.com/video/yy1kOwUyEsM/w-d-xo.html

By the way, they killed ab. 200.000 citizens of Warsaw in process.

You need to know that I'm not German, but British, so "my forefathers" had no part to play in that particular atrocity. "My forefathers" attacked Würzburg and Dresden, as well as Düsseldorf, Cologne, Frankfurt, Lübeck and many, many other cities. Indeed, they deliberately set out to target civilians, especially the working classes, rather than military or industrial targets. But not for "retribution": it was to break the country's morale.
Retribution is never, ever a good reason to kill. That is what causes wars in the first place, and that was the primary motivation of the Nazis' persecution of the Jews. The British were trying to stop a murderous and tyrannical regime, and not by trying to prove they were more murderous and more tyrannical: we weren't trying to out-Nazi the Nazis. It was at the time, and still is, a subject of debate as to whether the ends truly justified the means.

I was born and raised in Thuringia in 1982 and never lived elsewhere. I got goose bumps when you talked about Thuringia. Thank you for that.Clearly I did not get much more from the GDR, but I was still a pioneer. I would like to tell you how I experienced my first visit to the west. Actually, it was the south because we drove to Kulmbach across the border. ^^I stood with my mother in a huge department store and there were things I had never seen before. I remember the smell most clearly. It smelled of coffee and chocolate. I saw a big table on which there were cups. On the cups were funny pictures and in each cup were 3 tubes Smarties. This is something similar to M&Ms. Anyway, I wanted to have such a cup and have begged with my mama. She said we couldn't buy any. One cost DM 5 and we didn't have that much money to swap back then. Suddenly a woman came and pressed a 5 DM piece in my hand. For my little hands, I was 6 years old, it was big and very heavy. She smiled and I thanked very much. My mama didn't really want to accept the money, but the woman insisted. I have this cup today and I always like to return back then. It was an interesting time for me to grow up. So that this is not a novel, I would like to thank you for your great videos and hope you will come more often around Germany to see more of our beautiful country. By the way, I love Hamburg the most. ^^

Your question about "Scherben": One meaning is shards, broken glass or ceramics. The other (older) meaning is still used in southern Germany and means "pot made of clay (Terracotta)". So "Obstorangerie in Scherben" means fruit trees (mostly citrus fruits) in large clay pots.

I really did not have any high expectations in matters of representation of Eastern Germany. And I have to you met my expectations. It's tiring that East Germany is somehow silenced in media coverage, despite its cultural richness.
But what really made me angry about this specific video is that the title explicitly is about going to East Germany but then in reality the video does not show a single bit of the town or the region. Shame on you.
Greetings from a guy born in Arnstadt (the oldest non Roman town in Germany) living Weimar (no need to explain this town, right), both in Thuringia.
Suhl has a beautiful old town center and a magnificent history of world rank. One part of this towns history is its world famous gun smithing tradition. Another is the whole history of the Simson Werke.
But hey yeah Würzburg it is, of course have it easy.
I really like your videos, but this one is just an insult!
    Sorry but not sorry!

    • @geneviere199
      @geneviere199 6 ปีที่แล้ว

And to add to it - as you already have had that topic in the video. The Residenz has been nearly totally burnt out during the air raids on March 16 1945 - a controversial topic actually as the city did not have any major industries en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bombing_of_W%C3%BCrzburg_in_World_War_II

@@geneviere199 wrong the Residenz was "only" destroyed about 40 %. Almost all of the stucce on the walls in the northern imperial Rooms and the Ingelheim Rooms had not been damaged. The southern wing of the Residenz was damaged much more though.

Learning about castles : each castle started with a small tower and some wooden fences. The tower was their first shelter in case of an assult. So the tower was a secure place. Most castles towers were build in the years between 1000 till 1200. Later they build castle walls made of stone around the tower. So in Würzburg you visited the festung and its oldes building, the central tower.

Nalf, you crack me up. After all the gardens you would have seen by this point in time, you decide to tell the vlog that the gardens remind you of the Legend of Zelda video game for Nintendo? I really need some new emojis for laughing hard.
So, the inside dope is that everyone in Germany wears lederhosen all the time? JUST as we always suspected, it feels so good when these kinds of belief systems are validated. I’m glad I learned in one of your festival (Reunification Day?) vlogs with Cody, Speedy and a lot of 🍺 that lederhosen are not supposed to chafe or I’d be worried about the bike rider. A guy has to look out for any imminent chafing threats, which is one of the many, many advantages of wearing Ath-Leisure clothing every day, don’t you find Nalf? Run fast, run free Dude. (The musical strains of “Born Free” play here.)
You seem to amuse the hell out of Siggy? Ziggy? too. It may be interesting in a future vlog to have him (carefully avoiding the spelling debacle again) talk to us about his experience living in the West with relatives in the East. I watched your 1945 museum vlog, and the comments about the East/West/Reunification experience were RIVETING. Really interesting. Seriously. I have to go back to that vlog and read more comments, there was a lot to unpack and digest.

Music from 1:32 to 2:15: there is also a German version of this song, sung by Ellfi Graf in 1973 named 'Herzen haben keine Fenster' (Hearts have no windows). th-cam.com/video/NdCsD_LDOks/w-d-xo.html

Ohhh! Ohhh! I used to be an English teacher in Suhl! They have a football team now? Suhl is so coooooooooold in the winter. That area of Germany (Thuringia and Franconia but actually all the way down to your neck of the woods in Schwäbisch Hall) was famous for the "Bauernkriege" or Peasants' Wars back in about 1525. The farmers got fed up paying taxes to the nobility and the church, so they got their pitchfroks, assembled armies, and attacked their oppressors. They destroyed a lot of castles and had a pretty good run until the aristocracy sent their professional armies to put the peasants down. Back then, Würzburg had a former mayor and town councilman named Tilman Riemenschneider who was a woodcarver famous for many beautifully carved church altars in that region. He sympathized with the peasants and when they lost, he got his hands crushed as punishment. But he got off better than Thomas Müntzer, a priest in Mühlhausen, Thuringia, who was considered one of the leaders of the peasants. He was "drawn and quartered" in a public execution. Yes, Germany looks so beautiful and quaint and all that today, but below the surface is a long history of atrocities from witch burnings to religious wars to genocide. Don't want to rain on your parade, just sayin'...

There is an old film with Montgomery Clift, where you can see Würzburg after the war. Its true, 90 percent was destroyed. You can watch the ruins in the film. I dont remember the title, but it was filmed in the location in Würzburg, short after war.

Must have been a 500 hour trip if you went all the way in slow motion.
You should like Suhl, not sure if you know about it but its probably also why the team is called gunslingers. Suhl is one of the major german cities of firearms production. Suhl and Oberndorf am Neckar is where most german gun manufacturers are located today.
Suhl is known for its super high quality hunting rifles, while Oberndorf today is a little more into military firearms with H&K and Rheinmetall.
