I don`t know about the first name, but they had to change from Westside to Westlife because of a US act at the time had already taken the name Westside. IOYOU (IOU, or I owe you) regardless of spelling that is an awful name I am glad they discarded early.

It may sound harsh to ditch half a group (of friends?) like that, but the reality is some people have the necessary talent and presence - and some don`t. So better to tell them straight, than to leave them with a vain hope of stardom and a long and prosperous career. But are you absolutely sure Westlife was part of Pop Idol, as I believe was the name of the original show of that category (X-factor came later), and which had many similar shows around the world, culminating with one featuring all the respective winners, a show called World Idol, where Kelly Clarkson and others lost out to the Norwegian winner Kurt Nielsen, who had - and still has - one of the most amazing voices, but always have sort of looked like he could have been and extra playing a Hobbit in the Lords of the ring saga. As I recall the first winner of the UK Pop Idol, Will Young, released as his first single a Westlife B-side called Evergreen. I remember all of this very vividly, since the final two in the competition was the openly gay Will Young, and Garreth Gates who had a problem with stuttering. That show was in 2002, and was the first of it`s kind in the UK (before that there had been a different show with talented people living under the same roof and being coached and trained, before finally a winner was chosen. But the winner of that show didn`t go on to much of a career, and that show was not repeated.) Anyway, if Westlife was part of any type of UK tv show selecting talents, that must have been before 1999, cause they had their first succession of hits that year, and arrived on the scene at the same time as A1, S Club 7 and the European debut of N`Sync. All of those acts had their debut in the UK charts that year. A1 and S Club 7 even had their first TOPT debut (Top of the Pops was Europe`s biggest pop show at the time, going through the UK chart, from 20 to number 1, every week and having some of the most successful acts in the studio, like was the case with both A1 and S Club 7 on that particular day that also N`Sync was in the tv show, but on tape from the German version of TOTP). Westlife also had several visits on the TOTP sets that year. But I cannot recall if they were on it at the same time as both A1, S Club 7 and Adam Rickitt had their TOTP debuts. But I think they were there, but not for the first time, cause I seem to recall Kian and one of the others, I cannot remember who (I just remember I thought Kian was funny, which came as a surprise to me, cause Brian was supposed to be the Robbie Williams in that group). But that interview must have been done either for the show of that same week, or after that, cause the set of TOTP had undergone a major upgrade and design change both behind the scenes and what could be seen on screen. But I remember Mel B of the Spice Girls was number one that week. "If I let you go" was Westlife`s second single I believe, but as I recall released later that year than the week in question (early July?). So if Westlife was on that week it would have had to have been with their debut single "Swear it Again." One thing that was a bit funny with the TOTP performance of If I let you go, however, was that because Nicky Byrne had a huge piece of sticky tape across his bum for some reason, that performance gave both the filming crew and the director some challenges. I have heard two different versions to why he had that tape across his bum. One being that he had a hole in the pants which hastily had to be covered with the jumper he wore and held in place by the tape - the other that it was to make the jumper appear as it did in the video, and not crinkle. Regardless why, it represented a challenge for the film crew and the director, because of the choreography of the song, not to have the tape appear on camera too much. But I doubt that performance could have been the same time as A1`s and S Club 7`s, Adam Rickitt`s and more, cause unless I recall wrong the video for If I let you go was recorded on the same day as Manchester United beat Bayern Munich in the Champions League final, and because of this all the Westlife lads were keen to end the shooting quickly so they could get to see the final. Those finals usually are in late May, so I doubt the video would have been finished as soon as early July. So if they were on at the time, it must have been with Swear it again (which was their first number 1 - and something of a surprise, cause it didn`t debut at number one as was usual with number ones back then, and also because it sold extremely well for a debut single - record breakingly well). Or that interview took place later the same year, when they were on TOTP with If I let you go. In regard to how Nicky and Brian (Bryan was just for Westlife) got into the group, the version I have been told (and by people who should know so pretty well) was that that happened simply by auditions. Not meaning to rain on your parade, but unless my memory is playing serious tricks on me, Westlife was never part of any of those types of tv shows. But it was interesting to hear about Shane`s mum`s part in the creation of this success story, so thank you for the info.:-)

Louie took Shane, Kian and Mark to X Factor and saw two guys (Nicky k Bryan) who were trying out for the show and loved their voices so he offered to make them both part of the new group, Westlife. Nicky and Bryan weren’t auditioning together, but in separate acts. The people they were with didn’t make it, so it left them available for Louie to get. Ironically, Simon didn’t even like Shane when he first saw him! He said he was ugly and to get rid of him and get someone else. He hadn’t even sung yet! After Simon left, Louie looked at Shane and slapped the side of his face and said “what’s wrong with you?!” Shane does Louie’s voice perfectly while saying this all! 😂😂 So Louie had Shane grow his hair longer, and they practiced for 3 months. Then dyed Shane’s hair blonde, and invited Simon back to hear them. Simon was listening and said “who’s the new guy, he’s great!” Louie just smiled and said “something like it was someone he just found”! To hear Shane tell it is hilarious!! 😂😂😂😂 I’ll see if I can find the video, I’ve just spent 49 straight hours now doing nothing but downloading Westlife music and videos!! My eyes, fingers and brain need a rest!! I LOVE listening to these guys!
Did Ronan Keating ever manage Westlife? I know it was said at the time that he did, but I honestly find it kind of odd he could be, all the time management is pretty much a 24/7 job. It is easier to manage more acts at the same time, than combining managing others with an artist career of your own. I have met many former performers/artists who has turned managers for other acts over the years - but never at the same time as they still performed themselves. There is both a conflict of interests there, as well as one job eating time, focus and concentration off the other, which is why I find it hard to believe both functions could be combined. But I heard a rumor that because Ronan Keating was the youngest of the Boyzone boys, his father had to sign the contract on his behalf, and the reason that he both got some single acts included on a Boyzone album, as well as was made manager of Westlife, was that Louis Walsh had forgotten to get Ronan to sign a contract himself after he turned 18 (he was 16 when his father signed for him). Which again meant that Louis Walsh had extended the deal with the record company for Boyzone without having Ronan Keating legally linked to Boyzone. At the same time Ronan, cause he knew Gary Barlow and through him had gotten in contact with Take That`s manager, Nigel Martin Smith, and Smith again had seen the potential in Ronan for both a solo career or closer collaboration with Barlow - maybe even to reunite Take That with Ronan replacing Robbie Williams. Those plans having gotten pretty far off the starting block, Ronan was actually not only ready to leave Boyzone, but was legally not tied to neither the group, nor Louis Walsh, because Walsh had neglected to have him confirm the contract signed by his father after he turned 18. Landing Walsh in the embarrassing and potentially very costly situation of having agreed a new contract with the record label, without actually having been in the position to do so for one of it`s lead singers and biggest names. And therefore, in order to keep Ronan in Boyzone and save the deal with the label and avoid a scandal and legal battle Ronan Keating was offered the deal of a lifetime. Walsh not only letting him become "manager" of his new act Westlife (according to rumors Stephen Gately was the one who actually had worked with Westlife prior to this), but also allowing him to have a solo single on a Boyzone album (and not just any single - the one for the movie Nothing Hill), solidly launching Ronan`s solo career. It sounds too fantastic to be true, I know. But the same source also claimed the boy bands Westlife, Boyzone, N`Sync and Caught in the act all had at least one gay member - but he wouldn`t name them. Since then we have seen everyone from Stephen Gately of Boyzone, Lance Bass of N`Sync, Mark Feehily of Westlife and Eloy de Jong (at one time boyfriend of Stephen Gately) of Caught in the act come out, or being outed. So now I more wonder how he could know all of this, more than I question if it is true.
@@Jenna304 I know he is credited for it. But being a manager is more than just a title. It involves meetings and calls almost non-stop. Cause a group, whether touring, recording or promoting creates a lot of work every single day. From being in contact with tv networks the group will perform in a show for, inform the press in a country about when and where the group will be there, to secure press coverage, signing contracts and signing for bills to cover costs of various kinds from rental cars, hotels - or having talks with fashion designers wanting the group to wear the designers clothes, but wanting the clothes to be seen, will need guarantees the clothes will be worn at certain performances or events - sometimes even in return for the group receiving payment to do so. Managing a group involves A LOT, and far more than would be possible to achieve while Ronan was himself being in Boyzone. Cause if someone calls - whether a record executive worried about the time and money spent in studio, the quality of the footage or idea behind the video for the next single - or it is a hotel wanting a financial guarantee for any eventual damages caused by the group while they are guests, the manager has to be available. Cause the manager is the only one with the authority to both speak for the group, and who can be sued for eventual damages. Assistants and secretaries can do the ground work and take messages, but the manager is the one people want to talk to. So if Ronan was performing, and couldn`t be reached, that could have serious consequences for Westlife. They could find themselves without hotel accommodation, or their next single could be postponed cause the label execs were not happy with the video. But had the manager been available assurances could be given both for a deposit to cover eventual damages at the hotel, and the exec could be persuaded that that type of video was perfect for the target group - no need to delay the release of the single. The manager is the go-to person for att decisions around the group. And a group can only have one, cause if there is more than one, one manager can agree to something with say a tv network, binding the group to appear on a tv show at the same day as the other manager is talking to someone else, agreeing for the group to be on the other side of the world on exactly the same day. Anyone from promoters to tv producers need to know for sure the act will be there when they need them, and the only person`s word they will take for that, is the manager. Therefore the manager constantly have a lot of people to call back when he wakes up in the morning, which is why that job is near impossible to combine with other occupations. A manager can have several acts - but only one job.

A1 and S Club 7 even had their first TOPT debut (Top of the Pops was Europe`s biggest pop show at the time, going through the UK chart, from 20 to number 1, every week and having some of the most successful acts in the studio, like was the case with both A1 and S Club 7 on that particular day that also N`Sync was in the tv show, but on tape from the German version of TOTP). Westlife also had several visits on the TOTP sets that year. But I cannot recall if they were on it at the same time as both A1, S Club 7 and Adam Rickitt had their TOTP debuts. But I think they were there, but not for the first time, cause I seem to recall Kian and one of the others, I cannot remember who (I just remember I thought Kian was funny, which came as a surprise to me, cause Brian was supposed to be the Robbie Williams in that group). But that interview must have been done either for the show of that same week, or after that, cause the set of TOTP had undergone a major upgrade and design change both behind the scenes and what could be seen on screen. But I remember Mel B of the Spice Girls was number one that week.
"If I let you go" was Westlife`s second single I believe, but as I recall released later that year than the week in question (early July?). So if Westlife was on that week it would have had to have been with their debut single "Swear it Again." One thing that was a bit funny with the TOTP performance of If I let you go, however, was that because Nicky Byrne had a huge piece of sticky tape across his bum for some reason, that performance gave both the filming crew and the director some challenges. I have heard two different versions to why he had that tape across his bum. One being that he had a hole in the pants which hastily had to be covered with the jumper he wore and held in place by the tape - the other that it was to make the jumper appear as it did in the video, and not crinkle. Regardless why, it represented a challenge for the film crew and the director, because of the choreography of the song, not to have the tape appear on camera too much.
But I doubt that performance could have been the same time as A1`s and S Club 7`s, Adam Rickitt`s and more, cause unless I recall wrong the video for If I let you go was recorded on the same day as Manchester United beat Bayern Munich in the Champions League final, and because of this all the Westlife lads were keen to end the shooting quickly so they could get to see the final. Those finals usually are in late May, so I doubt the video would have been finished as soon as early July. So if they were on at the time, it must have been with Swear it again (which was their first number 1 - and something of a surprise, cause it didn`t debut at number one as was usual with number ones back then, and also because it sold extremely well for a debut single - record breakingly well). Or that interview took place later the same year, when they were on TOTP with If I let you go.
In regard to how Nicky and Brian (Bryan was just for Westlife) got into the group, the version I have been told (and by people who should know so pretty well) was that that happened simply by auditions. Not meaning to rain on your parade, but unless my memory is playing serious tricks on me, Westlife was never part of any of those types of tv shows.
But it was interesting to hear about Shane`s mum`s part in the creation of this success story, so thank you for the info.:-)
Tvjunkieful12 I don’t think I worded it correctly, sorry. Louie took Shane, Kian and Mark to X Factor and saw two guys (Nicky k Bryan) who were trying out for the show and loved their voices so he offered to make them both part of the new group, Westlife. Nicky and Bryan weren’t auditioning together, but in separate acts. The people they were with didn’t make it, so it left them available for Louie to get.
Ironically, Simon didn’t even like Shane when he first saw him! He said he was ugly and to get rid of him and get someone else. He hadn’t even sung yet! After Simon left, Louie looked at Shane and slapped the side of his face and said “what’s wrong with you?!” Shane does Louie’s voice perfectly while saying this all! 😂😂 So Louie had Shane grow his hair longer, and they practiced for 3 months. Then dyed Shane’s hair blonde, and invited Simon back to hear them. Simon was listening and said “who’s the new guy, he’s great!” Louie just smiled and said “something like it was someone he just found”!

Did Ronan Keating ever manage Westlife? I know it was said at the time that he did, but I honestly find it kind of odd he could be, all the time management is pretty much a 24/7 job. It is easier to manage more acts at the same time, than combining managing others with an artist career of your own. I have met many former performers/artists who has turned managers for other acts over the years - but never at the same time as they still performed themselves. There is both a conflict of interests there, as well as one job eating time, focus and concentration off the other, which is why I find it hard to believe both functions could be combined. But I heard a rumor that because Ronan Keating was the youngest of the Boyzone boys, his father had to sign the contract on his behalf, and the reason that he both got some single acts included on a Boyzone album, as well as was made manager of Westlife, was that Louis Walsh had forgotten to get Ronan to sign a contract himself after he turned 18 (he was 16 when his father signed for him). Which again meant that Louis Walsh had extended the deal with the record company for Boyzone without having Ronan Keating legally linked to Boyzone. At the same time Ronan, cause he knew Gary Barlow and through him had gotten in contact with Take That`s manager, Nigel Martin Smith, and Smith again had seen the potential in Ronan for both a solo career or closer collaboration with Barlow - maybe even to reunite Take That with Ronan replacing Robbie Williams. Those plans having gotten pretty far off the starting block, Ronan was actually not only ready to leave Boyzone, but was legally not tied to neither the group, nor Louis Walsh, because Walsh had neglected to have him confirm the contract signed by his father after he turned 18. Landing Walsh in the embarrassing and potentially very costly situation of having agreed a new contract with the record label, without actually having been in the position to do so for one of it`s lead singers and biggest names. And therefore, in order to keep Ronan in Boyzone and save the deal with the label and avoid a scandal and legal battle Ronan Keating was offered the deal of a lifetime. Walsh not only letting him become "manager" of his new act Westlife (according to rumors Stephen Gately was the one who actually had worked with Westlife prior to this), but also allowing him to have a solo single on a Boyzone album (and not just any single - the one for the movie Nothing Hill), solidly launching Ronan`s solo career.
It sounds too fantastic to be true, I know. But the same source also claimed the boy bands Westlife, Boyzone, N`Sync and Caught in the act all had at least one gay member - but he wouldn`t name them. Since then we have seen everyone from Stephen Gately of Boyzone, Lance Bass of N`Sync, Mark Feehily of Westlife and Eloy de Jong (at one time boyfriend of Stephen Gately) of Caught in the act come out, or being outed. So now I more wonder how he could know all of this, more than I question if it is true.

@@Jenna304 I know he is credited for it. But being a manager is more than just a title. It involves meetings and calls almost non-stop. Cause a group, whether touring, recording or promoting creates a lot of work every single day. From being in contact with tv networks the group will perform in a show for, inform the press in a country about when and where the group will be there, to secure press coverage, signing contracts and signing for bills to cover costs of various kinds from rental cars, hotels - or having talks with fashion designers wanting the group to wear the designers clothes, but wanting the clothes to be seen, will need guarantees the clothes will be worn at certain performances or events - sometimes even in return for the group receiving payment to do so.
Managing a group involves A LOT, and far more than would be possible to achieve while Ronan was himself being in Boyzone. Cause if someone calls - whether a record executive worried about the time and money spent in studio, the quality of the footage or idea behind the video for the next single - or it is a hotel wanting a financial guarantee for any eventual damages caused by the group while they are guests, the manager has to be available. Cause the manager is the only one with the authority to both speak for the group, and who can be sued for eventual damages. Assistants and secretaries can do the ground work and take messages, but the manager is the one people want to talk to. So if Ronan was performing, and couldn`t be reached, that could have serious consequences for Westlife. They could find themselves without hotel accommodation, or their next single could be postponed cause the label execs were not happy with the video. But had the manager been available assurances could be given both for a deposit to cover eventual damages at the hotel, and the exec could be persuaded that that type of video was perfect for the target group - no need to delay the release of the single.
The manager is the go-to person for att decisions around the group. And a group can only have one, cause if there is more than one, one manager can agree to something with say a tv network, binding the group to appear on a tv show at the same day as the other manager is talking to someone else, agreeing for the group to be on the other side of the world on exactly the same day.
Anyone from promoters to tv producers need to know for sure the act will be there when they need them, and the only person`s word they will take for that, is the manager. Therefore the manager constantly have a lot of people to call back when he wakes up in the morning, which is why that job is near impossible to combine with other occupations. A manager can have several acts - but only one job.
Louis Walsh is/was their manager. Ronan was their co-manager so that his & Boyzone's fans would support Westlife.
