- In February 2019, clashes between India and Pakistan took place over the disputed region of Kashmir and military aircraft of both nations crossed the Line of Control for the first time since 1971. India launched the first attack near the town of Balakot as a retaliation against a Pakistani based militant group which had previously launched a suicide attack against an Indian police station. Pakistan launched its own retaliatory strikes under code name Swift Retort which led to clashes between fighter aircraft of two nations. Interpretation of events differs very dramatically between India and Pakistan. They essentially agree on just one thing, an Indian MiG-21 Bison flown by Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman was shot down by a Pakistani F-16. India claims that seconds before, their pilot also shot down another Pakistani F-16 that was trying to shoot down his wingman. Pakistan denies it. Plus, a Pakistani pilot was also decorated for shooting down an Indian Su-30MKI even though there's no official kill claim. India denies loosing that aircraft.
Is it even possible for an older aircraft such as MiG-21 to shoot down a fourth generation fighter? What kind of evidence do both sides offer to support their claims? And do we have a definitive answer two and a half years later?
