Won $30 on a game once and got all my pieces off the board before they even made it to the other end. Best part is I wasn’t even the one suggesting we play for money.
I've learned to play Backgammon (ban-sugoroku), Mahjong, Koi-Koi, Cho-han, Shogi and Cee-lo all from the same source. The Yakuza videogame series (and subsequent TH-cam tutorials for the mechanics in-game)
Thank you so much Adam 😭😭😭 I was going through a bout of depression and was wondering how I was going to get through the week without NRB's board game club content and you put this up. Thank you 🙏
Been playing it since I was a kid, used to play mum and dads which was in a fancy briefcase and the pieces had a very satisfying weight and clink clank noise. The sound of the dice in the cups and bouncing on the play surface. My wife gave me a lovely set for our wedding. I never knew what the doubling cube was for or about the betting. I just enjoyed the game. All the sounds and feel of the game might not make it sexy, but it had a quality to it that I hadn't found elsewhere. This was before I got into "proper" board gaming, it certainly had the sexy over monopoly and connect 4.
Very interesting video as always! Great job! I've been playing backgammon for years with my family in the Balkans or my turkish girlfriend, this game is like a national sport over there. However, I NEVER heard about bets in this game before hearing it here, and neither did the people with whom I usually play. My girlfriend also didn't believe it when I told here after watching the video, and was very surprized. I suppose it depends on the fact if one is playing it because of its fancy sexy recent reputation, or just because it is just a cultural habit of the region of the world you live in.
Haha. I laughed at the Iranian part. I learned how to play backgammon when I was 5/6 years old. (Spoiler alert, I am from Iran) and I played this game almost for anything. I remember playing it for an entire day to decide who is going to wash the dishes :) Now I can say I had a sexy hobby! Thank you :))))
i also learned when i was small, but that was because i lived in turkey, we still have a beautiful briefcase style set. i miss seeing all the people playing backgammon in the places with the things
When I was a kid in the 70s (America; New Jersey to be specific) we played a lot of backgammon. We were kids so there was nothing sexy about it. Great game. We called it “peeling off” not bearing off.
I actually knew how to play backgammon before watching this video (not Iranian, not even in origin, it’s just a game my mom really likes). Also this video is hilarious!
This episode was fantastic but that quote from Tim Malake* tied everything together in a really classy silken bow. *I really don't know how to spell this dude, and even mis-spelling his name seems to bring up no corrections on any reputable search engine.
The reason Backgammon fell out is the same reason I don't enjoy Texas Holdem anymore. It used to be fun to play and watch on TV. Then the overanalytical types moved in. Every move and bet takes minutes to make. This happened in the fun home games I played. Its not fun to play or watch on TV anymore.
I was raised playing backgammon against my mom and brother growing up. We used to bet pennies using the doubling cube. ADAM if I ever visit London can we PLEASE play a game! I promise I won't take all your money....
17:26 - ouch, that hurts as a bridge and backgammon enthusiast. I guess we got too focused on playing it the "proper" way rather than making it sexy? I'm going to keep that in mind, because the games are both super fun, and I think we haven't heard the last of them. Meanwhile, Brad Owen's poker vlog - that's sexy, even though it's also very analytical. I don't know if I'd actually want to live that high-octane lifestyle, but it's a bunch of fun to follow along with and imagine.
I think it would have been good to include that the game can actually end at three different levels of severity: regular win, gammon, and backgammon. These themselves multiply the pot by 1, 2, or 3 (say, 10, 20,or 30 dollars). Then, the doubling cube is used to double the pot *atop that*, bringing it to 20, 40, or 60 in the worst case for a single game. Also, without gambling for money, Backgammon can still be a very fun game. However, you should *never* play a single game of it. Rather, you play a series where, instead of money, you are gambling points necessary to win the series. In my opinion, Backgammon is a very underrated game, especially by most people in the board gaming community. I've been able to get many people hooked by sitting them down in front of a nice set and administering such decisive victories that they are forced to acknowledge that it is a game of skill rather than one of luck.
I've always wondered what that odd die was for - never used it or the betting mechanics, just played the game (I think it's plenty fun on it's own - murdering your opponent's tokens while your home base is all doubled up is the best!)
My dad taught me how to play over 40 years ago now and he learned it in prison…..maybe from an Iranian lol now I’m teaching my children to play (I’ve never been to prison though) fyi we call them counters not tokens. Also, that opening throw of 6&4 was a set move and you could have exploited that…..you’d only know that through experience!! 😉
This is speculation, so pinch of salt. Geek and Sundry (the home of TableTop) was bought by LionsGate Digital Media (LDM). LDM proceeded to do things against the spirit of what the original channel intended, mainly paywalling a LOT of their popular stuff, including an "enhanced" version of Critical Role and early access to TableTop. I believe Wil was NOT happy about it and refused to do any more. Scheduling was probably a factor, too. But, this is my speculation. If anyone else has a better insight, please do correct me!
@@Kay_Sea251 Most of what I remember was along those lines, with Wil not liking the pay-walling etc, though I'd also add that Wil came in for a lot of flack for throwing a producer under the bus publicly for rules errors in games, and I feel like that played a part too
Backgammon is still a relevant game even without all the glamour and famour people with lots of money. I don't really see it as a "sexy" gambling game like poker but more like a mindsport such as chess and go, except it's more fun. Generally people who play it seriously, play it in the match format, several games in a row until a certain point target is reached. If somebody is making a living with backgammon, they get the money from books or teaching, winning tournaments etc. and not actually from playing for money. Or so I think.
alot of similarities between this and poker, considering i've been a professional for the last 6 years travelling all across the world, it seems like poker took over
Getting Backgammon popular again is easy. Just get a bunch of popular Twitch streamers into it temporarily and watch it boom for like 3 months and die again.
This “SEXY” content is totally inappropriate for TH-cam! You should be ashamed of yourselves!! I am a Backgammon addict and it is no laughing matter. (I am not a backgammon addict) The Justin Timberlake Sexy Backgammon cover killed me more that I would care to admit!! (Good job, I love these videos)
Of course it's sexy! Adam using his lovely deep voice to explain something is *always* sexy, regardless what subject it is. Even if it's complete gibberish, like the wrestling kayfabe stuff.
I hadn't heard of Hentacle, and now I have, I think it's a pity that you didn't find the designers and throw the laptop at them! With hand grenades attached On the flipside, if you want to do a show about the weirder edges of boardgames, Consentacle is a game about consent between a girl and a tentacle monster, so presumable a game that Joey Ryan would fail at... [on slightly less salacious but equally weird game topics, a company called Thorny Games do a game about a dialect in a language rising and falling]
ADAM: We got any Backgammon superfans in the comments? Anyone actually ever bet BIG money on a game? Let us know your stories!!
No but I'm defo gonna start ... Now I just need to go buy one and become a backgammon legend and fight off the advancements of supermodels
Won $30 on a game once and got all my pieces off the board before they even made it to the other end. Best part is I wasn’t even the one suggesting we play for money.
Played a few games of strip backgammon with my girlfriend at the time.
Adam ill give u a 22p game what you saying
I love backgammon. It's still my no.1 game, above any modern board game.
When he threw the laptop out the door I nearly died laughing. Adam u r just awesome
Same
Got to admit, almost spat out my drink when he did that, bloody Legend.
Ohh that was amazing
Same here. Did not expect him to really do it.
OMG YES lol🤣
Bare-legged Adam isn’t real, he can’t hurt you...
Bare-legged Adam:
I saw bare legged Adam... It's power is equivalent to the wushi finger hold.
you are busy worrying about bare legged adam but you overlooked the true danger that was gammon eyepatch adam
Forcing people to like your favorite game being a part of the hobby for literal decades just feels right
Huge Backgammon fan here, never bet but now I know why I always felt like a cigarette and a shower after a game. Splendid video, sir.
This is why Adam needed the robe then...
ADAM: Got TWO videos out of it. It's paying for itself!
@@NoRollsBarred does Oli want it back after these videos?

Genius choice of clip from Beyond the Valley of the Dolls there (1:40). Kudos to the editor.
This was hilarious and informative. I just bought backgammon because I actually wanted to learn how to play.
Great video, loving this series.
Great editorial with top notch and hilarious presentation. Loved it.
I been a fan for a few years now. Adam, this is your best video yet. Well done sir.
“What’s hentacle?”
You see, when a tentacle loves someone very much...
That's Consentacle. Hentacle has a scoring system based on being the most vile going by the BGG description...
5:55 Witchcraft! It's all fives! Even the timestamp!
thise dice changing from double 5 to double 6 and back and then again....magic
The amount of wordplay in this video was brilliant.
That roll up board is awesome! Great, more stuff to buy! Might be able to talk my wife into this one though, we both like Backgammon.

Well done on the title alone.
Very nice of you to recognize persian culture Adam. Thank you from 🇮🇷
