  • Will Handy grows up in Memphis with his preacher father and his Aunt Hagar. His father intends for him to use his musical gifts only in church, but he can't stay away from the music of the streets and workers. After he writes a theme song for a local politician, Gogo, a speakeasy singer, convinces Will to be her accompanist. Will is estranged from his father for many years while he writes and publishes many blues songs. At last the family is reunited when Gogo brings them to New York to see Will's music played by a symphony orchestra.
Katharine Handy Lewis singing The Memphis Blues : • Katharine Handy Lewis ...
Katherine Handy Lewis intended this album as a surprise for her father W.C. Handy, often remembered as the "Father of the Blues." Having grown up with his style of music, she reproduces it better than anyone. Ms. Lewis is accompanied by James P. Johnson. 1958 Folkways.

This film is a lesson for younger Black generations to get a glimpse of class, style and dignity that Nat King Cole, Eartha Kitt and every other Black artist displayed in this film. A beautiful tribute to the late Great Father of the Blues. W.C. Handy👏🏾👏🏾 Thank you for posting!

The scene that takes place 40 minutes into the movie with Eartha Kitt singing is one of the greatest vocals I have ever heard in my life. You cannot get any better than that when it comes to singing. She totally owns it. I have seen this movie over 20 times and I still welp up while I watch it cuz I can't believe all the talent in here. Black music is the best. 😎

Honestly, I never knew that Nathaniel Cole is actually also a remarkable actor.
In his later years he should have been casted in more movies, and not with just all Black cast.
The actors and actresses in this particular movie are all icons in their own right.
    Amazing and sterling acting.
After watching this movie I am enthralled.
There should have been many such movies.
    Clean and descent.

In all my life I never understood racism and when I watch such wonderful people singing such incredible music I understand it even less. How much creativity and love lost to ignorance . Disposable human beings, endless troubles. The art of a culture lost to madness. Shattered magnificent souls sharing blessed feelings belong in the realm of human decency. This music and rhythm has triumphed over all adversity and can only embarrass the haters and their power structure. Voices delivering the passions of a nation. Immortalized , magnificent desires from the heart. Reminding all souls we are all one, together, forever.

Unfortunately there's a whole generation, within POC, that are totally unaware of how blacks in the past accomplished greatness decade after decade. They took pride of their accomplishments and of other folks. It's as if the history of people who did such important things has been erased by the cultural victimhood mindset of today.

I had a private audience with Earth Kitt at the Vine Street Bar & Grill in Hollywood in the late 70s. She did her entire rehearsal for a dinner set that night just for me:) and we chatted and when I was ready to leave, she came around from behind the bar and gave me a big hug and thanked me for stopping in:) True story.

Also Mahalia Jackson was one of the Great Spiritualist at 14 years of age she sang for Queen Victoria in Great Britain, President Roosevelt & President Eisenhower She is in this movie nearly right from the very beginning! She had a set of pipes on her that would out do most! Her last concert she had come out of retirement for, she was in her 80's. her last song of the concert was "How I Got Over" She had been sick all night before the concert. if you get the chance to hear her singing this recording you will hear the anointing of the Lord God in her singing; "I spent all night long but He brought me over". After she went off stage & to her dressing room, she just sat down in her chair. Someone looked in on her and found that she had passed away not long after she sat down.

Only ONE scene with Ella. That is just not right. Loved the movie though. Huge fan of Nat King Cole since 2002. Dianna Krall said that he, Nat, was her biggest influence!

When Ella's was discovered, like all new singers , she was sent to a singing teacher. He said she had a perfect voice, perfect pitch, etc., and lessons would ruin her voice. Think of the talents from that era...these giants plus Count Bassey, and Duke Ellington, the dancers. Now we have rap. Perhaps I have no right to critique since I am white, but Lord how I loved those musical giants.

Thank you for this! Such an awesome film! They say history repeats itself...Hollywood could never repeat or compare today with such great performers of that era! They couldn't produce anything with out them today & rely on computer effects instead of using the great acting skills of actors as were back then! Generations of good acting (and directing!) becoming obsolete...so sad. Modern day acting/directing are so full of themselves & need to learn from the old ones.
