- Hello and Happy Thanksgiving my Friends, welcome to my Southern Kitchen!
On the final episode of my Thanksgiving Series, I am making one of my favorite Greens growing up, some good old Southern Mustard Greens! Simple, easy, fresh, tender, and slow simmered in that flavorful Pot Liquor! Everyone will love and enjoy this Soul Food classic Side Dish and perfect to serve for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Soul Food Sunday!
6 cups water
1 smoked pork neck bone, ham hock, or turkey
1 medium-large yellow or white onion, chopped
2 1/2 to 3 bunches fresh mustard greens, washed, cleaned, and picked
1 teaspoon white sugar
1 teaspoon white or black pepper
2 tablespoons onion soup mix
1 capful (1 teaspoon) distilled white vinegar
Kosher salt
In a large pot over high heat, add the water, smoked meat, chopped onion, sugar, pepper, and onion soup mix; bring to a boil. After it comes to a boil, turn the fire down to medium-low and simmer for 30 minutes until the meat is tender and fall off the bone. Add in the mustard greens and continue to simmer for 2 hours or until tender. 25 minutes before done, add in the vinegar and continue to cook. Then add in some kosher salt to taste and simmer for another 10 minutes. Serve with cornbread and enjoy!

Perfect timing, I usually make collard greens, but when I went to the store, the fresh bundles of collard greens looked a little tired, like they’d been sitting around a little too long, and they didn’t have the washed and cut bags either. However, the mustard greens looked so fresh I decided to buy them instead, but I haven’t cooked anything but collard greens my whole life. I was raised by a “city mama” from Long Island NY, and she was the Betty Crocker generation, which I always enjoyed like Stove Top stuffing, boxed Mac & cheese, au gratin potatoes, frozen waffles & pancakes etc. We definitely did not go without, but then I got married and my husbands mama was from the country, we live in Texas, and she taught me how to cook natural food, survival food, that tasted like food from heaven lol. I had not even tasted real butter until I was an adult, something you won’t see in my house is tubs of spread, or margarine, I just can’t stand the way it makes my mouth feel.
I love soul food, it reminds me that no matter what, you can eat delicious food no matter my finances.

Hi, Ellen!
These mustard greens look awesome! I've never added onion soup mix to greens, but I could see that being a good thing to add--onion soup mix is a secret ingredient in so many southern recipes. Served with that skillet cornbread, the greens looked irresistible. Thanks for sharing this great holiday recipe!
