Funny that you mention "Doom Gun," because Omega actually has a line saying "The black arms can turn thsir hands into guns. You share their DNA, so I surmise that you can turn your hand into a gun too."
"Shadow is way too chill about both of them being here. He's just accepted it." There is precedence for this though. Shadow is someone who can easily compartmentalize his emotions to focus on the now vs then. He is EXTREMELY pragmatic. Almost to a fault. But I'm glad this game does at least address the fact that he does miss the two of them, and that he reaffirms Maria's wish. Not to mention, breaking his own rules for Maria; it's said that his character sheet says he can't smile unless it's in a mocking way. He didn't do that here. Also I love that Jacob brings up Sonic's intense personality from the POV of Shadow. I think that's done on purpose. We're too used to Sonic's personality and how he gets things done from HIS point of view. But seeing his intensity AND cockiness AS WELL as the ability to back that up as someone who doesn't interact with him that much? Yeah it's no wonder people feel the need to fight dirty in order to win. It's no wonder Shadow DOES respect Sonic to some degree. He knows Sonic doesn't fool around and isn't afraid to pull up when needed. Shadow being willing to use his new powers and stab Sonic in the back with them tells us a lot about Shadow, again his pragmatism, and Sonic too in such a short time. God DAMMIT Ian Flynn absolutely cooked here.
I agree the story is mostly good, but nah man. This is Maria we’re talking about here. Maria is the most important person to Shadow, and I do not think it fits his character to act stoically seeing her alive at all. I’m willing to accept pragmatism to explain stoicism in a lot of situations. But for Maria of all people? No way Plus, it’s just kinda boring? We get to finally see Shadow and Maria interact with each other outside of flashbacks, and Shadow barely reacts and immediately goes back to business. Shadow and Maria’s relationship has always felt a little forced because we never have actually got to see them interact much at all. The story attempts to give us more of that, and it succeeds a little. I care more about there relationship than I used to. But it’s still so limited.
@DerrickWilson-fm7vc i think Ian did a good job with what he could given the mandates on Shadow. The fact that we get to see him cry at the end is huge. Shadow just isn't the type to wear his heart on his sleeve like Sonic is. I mean the poor thing was in visible shock when he first sees the two Robotniks. I will agree i wish we saw them interact more, but the more I think about it I'm not sure what else could've been done. Shadow did have a mission to get done after all. Maybe have it so the entire story centered on Shadow having to make a choice between the timeline and Maria. That way the rival fight cutscene could have more weight too. But for what it is, it's a big step in the right direction. Especially for Shadow. His model even looked so good; his little "hmphs" were so cute.
@@ribottostudio I’m not blaming Ian. I don’t know enough about his writing outside of the games to know how competent he is or how much Sega interferes with him. I loved the way Sonic reacts after beating Shadow. I really liked him saying nice hustle; I feel like that’s a very Sonic thing to do. Recognize Shadow’s skill but still in a very cocky way. And I love the change to Shadow’s dialogue for the Time Eater fight. Just “on your feet” is so perfect for the character Shadow has become. Not a desire or belief in Sonic, but an expectation that someone like him wouldn’t lose so easily. It’s clear he can write the characters, and I wouldn’t want him gone because he makes an occasional fumble that might not even be his fault. But I very strongly maintain Shadow and Maria’s interaction is the biggest writing fumble the series has had since Ian joined, regardless of if it’s his fault. There are two issues. 1. This was the perfect opportunity to actually see Shadow and Maria become friends and what made them connect so closely to each other. But we don’t get it. We only get to see Maria’s reaction to Shadow waking up and a mention that they had a teacher. I think not seeing why Shadow and Maria are close is the biggest obstacle in me connecting strongly with their relationship 2. I cannot remotely get behind the idea that Shadow’s reaction to seeing an alive Maria makes sense for his character. Yes, it’s not like he’s stonewalled about it, but he’s pretty close to it considering the circumstances. This is kinda, like, the most interesting and significant thing that will happen to Shadow now that he’s gone through his character development. I think one issue with Shadow is that there’s a lot less room for him to grow now that his character arc has been completed. The character he’s turned into has a lot less range than he used to as an anti hero, and that lack of range is on full display with Maria. If even Maria can’t get him to react in a substantial way, then literally nothing will. This leaves us with a character that can’t emote or change much at all, which will make Shadow feel stagnant when he’s not allowed to rehash old story beats. To be fair, Sonic is a static character too, but that static character is inherently more interesting to me than Shadow’s current personality. Sonic is so much more expressive and energetic that he can carry scenes without needing to undergo character development. I don’t think Shadow can

on the topic of boost sonic and boost shadow, i think that frontiers open zone style boost (extremely fast, doesn't damage enemies, extremely tight turning radius, regenerates when you aren't using it, etc, plus the absolutely busted frontiers spindash) is perfect for sonic while this style of boost (damages enemies, slightly slower, slightly wider turning radius, needs rings to regenerate, plus chaos control and the doom powers) is perfect for shadow, as a way to differentiate them some
Honestly... yeah that can work. Its clear they are experimenting with open zone a bit more with the hub world too, which i am super appreciative of. Now does make me wonder where sonic will go next. It seems like the Sonic franchise I'd becoming confident again in both gameplay and storytelling which is good to see.

Feel like Alpha is really selling Boost Sonic short, because almost always in those games if you just "hold forward" then they will frequently hit you with obstacles that half progress and/or force you down to lower paths that are typically much slower and dangerous. The better you play, the more "on rails" it feels because you're constantly in a flowstate, but in reality you're frequently having to react to stay on good paths and maintain speed. There's still automation in the levels, but the only time the levels were pretty much all automation was in Forces, and that game was almost universally panned for it. Also take a shot every time Alpha presses boost instead of homing attack and vice versa and you will die.
Yeah, Unleashed is a pretty good example of what you said. The game was definitely designed with players being in a flowstate and having fast reaction time. Constantly holding forward and boosting will get you killed rather than throw you into a lower route however and I honestly kinda like it because of that
He did say he was a little biased but I agree with you while in some sections you do just hold forward and boost there are sections that require taking things a little slow and require some maneuvering
@@CSDR43312 Part of the reason why they moved away from that sort of design featured in Unleashed was because of critical reception and people complaining about difficulty. While the fans love replaying through the levels to learn their intricacies and really master them, critics and the average player just want to blast through and are incapable of acknowledging their skill issue as the problem. I do feel like throwing people on lower paths is generally a more elegant design choice, but I don't mind when death is the punishment for failure.
@@maskeddemon2107 Well they've still gotta have sections that let you really experience Sonic's speed unhindered, they can be an awesome spectacle or break from more intricate platforming sections. Insane to me how people hate on him when he's written some of the best versions of these characters in years. I'll happily take some weird references if it means we get to keep getting writing this good.
I take solace in that the Ian Flynn hate seems to be a small but vocal minority. The fans, overall, seem to love his improvement in the series as a whole over the last few years. Plus, the man has been in this fandom since day one and working for Sonic in some capacity since 2004. He knows this series and fandom inside and out and I doubt either Flynn or Sega is going to let a few angry voices on Twitter kill the momentum despite strong sales and praise. Especially after what happened when they listened the "There are too many characters" vocal minority with Sonic 4 and predictably got near universal backlash.
My favorite part is when Memphis Tennessee said "welcome to tilted towers" and in the end of the fight Shadow said "what do you know? The perfect shape"
watching him miss all the alternate paths and ignoring the collectables as he was talking about how the level was kind of just a straight line was kinda unintentionally funny
Laughing at all these comments complaining that Alpharad gave some (very mild and frankly fair) critique of the boost formula, as if Alpharad wasn't going "it's peak", and "we won" and "they cooked" every 2 minutes. It's totally fine that Alpharad thinks the boost games are too linear/scripted, I feel the same way (Yes, SA2 is also linear, but your movement is a lot more responsive/organic and you're in control to do whatever with the physics system WITHIN the linear stage layout, wheras the boost games are very much designed around specific actions and those move you in a much more predetermined way), y'all should be happy that in spite of that Alpharad is really enjoying this and it's selling him on the boost formula. Hopefully it does the same for me when I get time to play.

The thing i like about Highway act 1 is how at first things seem relatively normal after the 3 acid trip city segments, but in the background you can see bits and piece that are "off" Sideways roads, diagnol buildings, etc Never heard anyone expect Final Chase as the last level. Pretty much everyone i saw (and myself) expected Black Comet since it was the Black Arms' home base in StH
"Those things from Final Chase" that "work pretty good in 2D" hurts me so much as someone who grew up playing the originals on Sega Genesis lmao. I feel fucking ancient; those have been around since like, Sonic 2-3 haha
i don't think he meant that kind of structure in general, it's that specific green arrow one that was in final chase that they made into one of those 2d obstacles
My poor tortured fav.... GAHHHH coming back after finishing the game to watch your reaction to the cutscenes was well worth it. We made the SAME face on the last cutscene, there were tears LOL
Something I noticed in this game is that all the bosses are related to Shadow, they would be attempts to be him, I noticed with a specific boss, I won't say spoilers of which one it is but yeah
Overall even tho I do think there was some missed opportunity with the story and lore and what characters could have shown up in the open zone, and even tho I do wish it was a bit longer. This was amazing, so much love went into the level desgin and animations and bosses. The interactions with shadow and characters was really sweet and the open area was really neat and there’s plenty to collect. Plus it looks so beautiful and the soundtrack is fantastic. So happy shadow got his time to shine after all these years and like the rest of the series, they want to get back on what made people love this series. ❤️🖤
4:00:00 you’re only 1 of 2 people I’ve seen get that glitch at the end. Not sure what causes it - maybe the angle you come out of it on? Thankfully tho I think that’s the only glitch I’ve seen in the entire game.
it's funny Alpharad thinks Shadow would hate Big while the more likely course of action Shadow would take is leave Big be cuz fuck he a tank probably even tankier than Omega. you know... Shadow's most trusted ally?
The boost formula was honestly my least favorite gameplay style Sonic's had. I don't HATE it, but it really limits the gameplay and stage layouts that can be made. However, Shadow Generations is the BEST it's ever been, and might actually be my favorite Sonic gameplay style ever. You have way more control over how Shadow plays and uses his momentum, and his abilities feel so natural to use and actually give the stage variety that really only Colors could have with the Wisps. It feels like a mix of the Adventure style and boost styles; comparing Sonic and Shadow's stages feel like night and day. You have the speed of the boost formula and the platforming maneuverability of the Adventure era but the level design complements both SO well. We're not playing lane simulator anymore, and the stages feel more fluid in letting you adjust your game plan on the fly compared to boost levels which are practically pure memorization. It adds a sense of improv due to the level design and physics, giving you more breathing room. I love Generations but playing Sonic's campaign felt like a downgrade a bit now lmao LOVED the Shadow campaign, and I hope this is how Modern Sonic operates going forward from a physics and level design perspective. Hell, the 2D Act 2's were so good they could even make a third (fourth?) Rush game with that style, too!!
Oh god Jacob you made me remember this old fanart I of Shadow I saw years ago. I think it was not that long after Unleashed was released and I saw a fanart of Werehog Shadow but the artist drew his werehog form as a bat.
I watched the Prologue the MOMENT EACH EPISODE came out, and it was amazing. Also saw the Preview of the animation when it came out too, and I was hyped for the Prologue to come out because of how good the Preview was. I beat the game 2 WEEKS AGO, and the physical copy arrived the day before, on the 25th, meaning it took me a day to beat this game (embarassingly). The ending was so bittersweet bro--Maria holding Shadow's head, and them touching foreheads, with her telling him: "If fate draws us apart, then I'll always be in your heart." MAH HEART, MAH SOUL 🖤❤💙💛😭 I took SO MANY screenshots lmao. I cried at that part. Not just crying. UGLY crying. Crying like a newborn baby. Beautiful game. 9.5/10. It would be a 10 if they put Casey Williams's "Without You" in the end credits for the extra dose of sadness. As a 16 year old who has been a Sonic fan since I was 6, I was amazed and 100% satisfied with this game. It revived my childhood game, Sonic Generations, as well as give Shadow HIS OWN GAME AFTER 19 YEARS!! AND EXPLORE HIS DYNAMIC WITH MARIA!!!!!!!! Hell I honestly wouldn't mind them having a crack at other niche ones like Secret rings and Black knight either.
Although I want to see them try more original games first. There is a alot of reused asset usage here so I am curious to see a wholly original game.
I think they should create Adventure 1 and 2 remaster as a bundle with a linked Chao garden that is significantly expanded on
Heroes needs it urgently since there is no way to play this game on modern platforms (not even on PC)
I think we just need new good games
@@ivanbanuelos1387 agreed it would be the ultimate test. If they can pull that off then my full faith in sonic will be restored.
The thing i like about Highway act 1 is how at first things seem relatively normal after the 3 acid trip city segments, but in the background you can see bits and piece that are "off"
Sideways roads, diagnol buildings, etc
Never heard anyone expect Final Chase as the last level.
Aaaahh, that's a fair point, duly noted.
Not really getting why it hurts
@@chaomasterzero4610 It just makes me feel old remembering my childhood, haha.
No? There were tubes you could run around but they didn't have gravity
Shadow, probably: "star platinum...i stopped time, and managed to escape at the last second"
My poor tortured fav.... GAHHHH coming back after finishing the game to watch your reaction to the cutscenes was well worth it. We made the SAME face on the last cutscene, there were tears LOL
the fact that 21:04 lined up the music THIS WELL is scary
The ending made me cry all 5 times I saw it.
its weird (/pos) seeing vods coming out that arent like three weeks/a month away from when it was streamed lmao
Yeah, Shadow is back baby
Marisa Profile moment

Behold, Black Doom's Radical Highway to Hell
"saved it yet again" nah man you're just cracked
The FIRST Sonic game to ever make me cry, amazing
Legitimately screaming for Alpharad to use chaos control, it's unreal. Use it, man! 😭😂
The ptsd given by every sonic game Jacobs play from self inflicted challenges
I am Shadow the Hedgehog and Shadow the Hedgehog is all of me
It's kinda funny how at some points he blamed the parts that were the game's fault on himself and the parts that were his fault on the game
It’s wild that there are no shadow 05 stages in this game
The last stage act 2 does start off the same way shadow 05 starts off the game
Wait yeah, what the fuck?
1:12:07 I hope the next smash game gives us more sonic representation. It’s long overdue.
I really just spent 5 hours because i love this game and i want to see people playing it
3:53:38 WAIT SONIC AND SHADOW DID A JOJO POSE
1:49:59 I got an ad at this exact moment and busted out laughing cause I knew he would die the second the ad ended XD
“Splatoon”?? You mean “The Adventures of Shadow the Hedgehog”, right?
2:00:30 It's this december Mr. Alpharad
4:00:00 you’re only 1 of 2 people I’ve seen get that glitch at the end. Not sure what causes it - maybe the angle you come out of it on?
Thankfully tho I think that’s the only glitch I’ve seen in the entire game.
Just saying, if frontiers was a "Rushed mess", and it still ended up better than the past decade of sonic, the future looks very bright.
This is the best sonic game since sonic heroes.
Oh, so the hubworlds are like mini Frontier zones. That's cool
Ah! And with Doom Surf it's suddenly Bowser's Fury, nice
Oh... there is only one hubworld. It's actually like Bowser's Fury!
All hail shadow
heroes rise again!
So true Shadowfan-27
bro your so right about sonic tho, that confidence from a foes pov has a different kind of feel.
almost as if his confidence stiffles you.
it's funny Alpharad thinks Shadow would hate Big while the more likely course of action Shadow would take is leave Big be cuz fuck he a tank probably even tankier than Omega. you know... Shadow's most trusted ally?
Considering Shadow finds Sonic annoying, he would probably find Big chill, it's a shame Shadow doesn't like (or care for) fishing
1:11:50 whats that one on the bottom left?
Havent finished the game yet, but was playing yesterday and Kingdom valley Act 1 is SO FUN to perfect.
Sonic The Hedgehog 3/2D World + Shadow’s Fury
Game starts at 3:00
Behold! The Ultimate life form!! (Can not swim)
Maria: "I don't want you to be driven by darkness. I want you to be happy." Whoever voices Maria made that line especially sweet to me. 🥹
Is no one talking about how 21:04-21:08 being on beat!!!
dont tell me "what i'm made of" and "live and learn" is stuck behind the digital deluxe pack 💀💀
My favorite thing to do with these is to try and find myself
4:34:11 and Jesus said on that day get f*cked doom while doing a fortnite dance
I love Generations but playing Sonic's campaign felt like a downgrade a bit now lmao
LOVED the Shadow campaign, and I hope this is how Modern Sonic operates going forward from a physics and level design perspective.
How many times did Jacob say cool?
Ian COOKED with both SXSG's GAME and PROLOGUE, my GOD.😭
Alpharad not talking more pains my ass
2:46:17 BRO FRONTIERS 2!? (MAYBE)
YAY alpharad
Supposedly metal overlord is the strongest metal sonic has ever been
Don't forget Master Overlord
This looks so fun just to play
Literally cinema
This game is honestly incredible. I plan on 100% both shadow and sonic and i am about 75% or 80% done with shadow.
I don't keep up with what goes on in sonic games, I genuinely thought this was a fangame.
Or a huge mod for sonic generations
I just kept seeing people going on about it, and I figured okay I guess it's an official sonic team release.
USE CHAOS CONTROL! PLEASE!
How in the world, did you shorten this to 30 minutes
1:48:01 ture but I don't die a lot so it doesn't change anything for me
I feel like a fool, I just watched the entire vod on twitch with terrible bit rate, i didnt know you had uploaded the vod
Shadow TV series
Sooo vid on this game?
As soon as I saw the banner I clicked
So peak that they Even gave a methaporical meaning to chaos control... 😢
Can you explain? I think I missed that.
My goat Kirk cooked
jacob dosent live with jaiden anymore?
Spoilers:
Shadow is now 2-for-2 on not being able to save Maria. That's rough buddy.
No chaos blast :(
I really do hope Shadow can move on. I half wonder if he ever got to mourn his loss properly.
2:35:33 god this hurts watching him play
It hurts me every time he skips the second wind section right after the first rocket in the final level act 1
