It was a surprisingly large challenge to try and figure out how to explain some of these concepts in as simple a way as possible. So for the e=mc2 stuff I was mostly trying to explain the concept in general rather than the context of a nuclear explosion. And yeahhhhhhh there definitely wouldn't be a firestorm in most modern cities. I opted to keep it in there because it was a good segue to talking about the devastation in Japan and it's something most people have no clue was even a thing! Also, lowkey that B83 warhead might be one of the best VFX shots I've ever done hahaha :P

I recall something being off with the math in the Universal logo video, but I think that was a plot point? Then they brought in Scott Manley, who had made a miscalculation? But that video also had to be recut due to copyright, and knowing them it was fixed if it was ever wrong. They are not dishonest, but rigor is becoming rare, and they occasionally put a bit too much stock into self-professed youtube experts. They're pretty good pop-sci, but it's pop-sci.
Great reaction! Its always nice to get some added context from someone who knows the physics when it comes to videos like this. Corridor crew is renowned for their VFX and that shot at 16:41 is a great example.
The best way to see the magnitude is to use NUKEMAP by Alex Wellerstein on your own / or nearby location and calculate how long you can stand outside without protection to receive a lethal dose of radiation, which is probably the worst way to die because it takes the longest (not taking in account starvation / dehydration).
The B-83 is a "dial a yield" weapon, with a range of yields to select from such that it is capable of use as a "tactical" weapon...it can be set for as little as 5 kilotons or less.
Mods of the B-61 (B-83s little brother) can actually go down to as little as 0.3 kilotons, although if someone is going as far as deploying a nuclear weapon I doubt this is the setting they'd use.

"It's the same principal as buoyancy" Exactly. You can make "cloud mushrooms" of air bubble in a pool if you go underwater, face the surface and blow a huge volume of air in a short amount of time. It takes a bit of practice, like rings of smoke.
The targeting of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were not targeting civilians per--se, but rather attacking their centers of manufacturing. People don't understand how ugly the war had gotten at that point. The US had just lost tens of thousands taking Okinawa and over 100k Japanese died in the battle. The bomb came at just the right time to prevent a land invasion of Japan, which would have likely cost upwards of 1 million American lives. Don't get me wrong though, there was the firebombing of Dresden which was the British intentionally targeting civilians as a big "F U" after the Germany spent months raining down missiles and bombs on London. My Grandfather was a Bombardier on a B-24 Liberator and every one of their 10 missions prior to being shot down were all targeting Germany's manufacturing centers, places like ball bearing factories and such. And if anyone is curious, I'm here typing this so yeah, most of the crew survived. They were interred in Germany and actually escaped, making it to the Swiss border who was a 'neutral' country. He was awarded a Silver star for that mission.
20:18 - the person opposite Wren, Jan, is a cinematographer and semi-regular contributor to Corridor, as well as being sort of Wren's sitcom archnemesis; one of the early examples of their rivalry was when Wren made a video about mounting a Nerf gun on a drone and Jan challenged Wren that he could knock it out of the sky with an axe before it could shoot him, as well as one where made Jan (who is missing his left pinky) a prosthetic finger and later a finger that doubles as a Nerf gun. It's not like Russia had a choice in terms of reducing its stockpile since after the fall of USSR the facilities and resources to maintain the stockpile was heavily diminished. Today it's unknown how many active nukes Russia has but it's probably much the same as its territory after the collapse. Why do you think they've sold so many? Recoup losses and not have to deal with housing and maintenance.

Each Submarine has 20 Trident II D5 Missiles and each of those contain 12 'multiple independent reentry vehicles' (MIRV) warheads, each having an explosive yield of almost 500 kilotons of TNT. So essentially, each Submarine can completely annihilate 244 cities the size of Los Angeles... and there are 18 of those submarines hiding around the globe.

A book written in 1962 called Thinking About The Unthinkable, by Herman Kahn put things in a different perspective for me. It described some scenarios that still seem terrifying. And today we have nations that continue to threaten others with these weapons.
I do agree that we need to keep working towards a world where these will never be used again, but it is worth noting that the reason we have so many is not to use them all, but to ensure enough are available for each potential situation. Some are sheer redundancy for the risk of preliminary strikes against nuclear installations - if the enemy thinks they can disable your nukes first, there is no disincentive to them starting the war. There are also those that are designed to get around different enemy tactics, the "nuclear triad" of land, sea and air delivery mechanisms under the philosophy that the enemy can't create countermeasures for all of them so they will never feel safe starting the war. Third, there are tactical weapons which are designed so that we have an option below "total annihilation" if the enemy uses nuclear weapons in a limited manner. Finally, there is redundancy for maintenance. All those being decommissioned or replaced, along with their replacements and those that are having just routine maintenance are counted. Realistically, there is no scenario in which more than about 20% of weapons would ever see use even in a total war scenario because the rest would either be targets, or would not be deployable before the conflict is over. 20% is still the worst disaster in human history, but it also explains makes a lot more sense when you look at the reality that "mutually assured destruction" between two geographically sparse and massive nations implies.

I recently got some trinitite sand and it’s only mildly radioactive since caesium-137 only has a half life of 30 years, even my Radiacode 103 struggles to get a reading, but it is able to detect the decay products given enough time
Potential energy has mass (or rather, ground states have negative mass). This is as true for chemical or gravitational potential energy as it is for nuclear.
Full annihilation would be worse than a nuke by about 4 orders of magnitude. Nukes are really stronger because of the strength of the strong nuclear force holding atoms together, not because of matter to energy conversion any more than chemical explosives.
The Tsar bomba was actually the start of another interesting method of nuclear delivery that would be hard to intercept, known as the "Backyard bomb" You built the nuclear bomb so big it was hard to move to the target, but because of the fallout from said explosion, you could set it off in your "backyard" instead and the fallout would drift over to the enemy. Now to be fair, the only ones with a big enough backyard would be the Russians though.
Basically, other missiles are sent towards the nuclear ones. Their task is to deviate its course, or damage it. A damaged nuclear bomb is still dangerous, as it can spill radioactive material all around, but still better than letting it explode.
What I found far more shocking is how pathetic they sound in reality. The sound is always dubbed and always realiged in time. There are rare unedited shots though and the bomb goes off with a 'crack' and then a rolling rumble. Not what you would expect. Not the big bang from the movies.
14:35 it doesn't take hitting an oil refinery or even a nuke to set off a firestorm with fire tornadoes. they happen in forest fires and the bombings of some cities with conventional weapons. heat rises pulling in more air from ground level, viola' all the conditions necessary for a vortex to form whether it be fire, water, or just air and debris. fire storms and their associated fire tornadoes have been known for awhile. dresden and tokyo are some historic examples.

Nukes don't work very well in space, it would basically have to be a bunker buster type and be used as a very very violent thrustwr
