What you are already doing is more than enough. I think it's fun and doable to make puzzle sandwiches once a month, but every day seems like even the children would stop finding it exciting and fun. Molded crayons are actually meant, amongst us "Pinterest Mom's" as a way to repurpose broken crayons that our little ones refuse to use. It's meant to save money, not make you spend more money to do it.
Plus, they become custom colors that some creative kids might find fun and feel pleased that they participated in making! She didn't seem to get that there's a time and place for DIYs: if you're forcing it, yeah it might feel like a hassle or a waste of money, but other times you repurpose what you've got and save money, with something new to show for it. Some of us are just naturally maker-minded, some of us aren't or don't have time to be (which is fine, because makers need there to be buyers and vice versa.)

Molded crayons are actually meant, amongst us "Pinterest Mom's" as a way to repurpose broken crayons that our little ones refuse to use. It's meant to save money, not make you spend more money to do it.
Plus, they become custom colors that some creative kids might find fun and feel pleased that they participated in making! She didn't seem to get that there's a time and place for DIYs: if you're forcing it, yeah it might feel like a hassle or a waste of money, but other times you repurpose what you've got and save money, with something new to show for it. Some of us are just naturally maker-minded, some of us aren't or don't have time to be (which is fine, because makers need there to be buyers and vice versa.)

Also, those funky shapes are often easier for young children to hold! Crayons are very small and hard to hold for many children
