Explanation
Wolves have a light-reflecting surface called the tapetum lucidum behind their retina that helps them see in the dark. This surface acts like a mirror, bouncing light back to the retina when it doesn't hit a photoreceptor. In some lighting conditions, the tapetum lucidum can reflect light out of the eye in longer wavelengths, making the eyes appear red.
Purpose
The tapetum lucidum, along with wolves' specially designed retinas, helps them see better than humans at night. This allows wolves to be more active at dawn and dusk, when it's darker, for hunting, traveling, and protecting their territory.
Other animals
