this is beyond exciting. while I live in Michigan and will likely never see this train or ride it, to see Amtrak and maybe even freight plying this wonderful line again is such an amazing thing. Conrail lived up to the Con in their name with the thousands upon thousands of miles of rail they stupidly gave up.
I still don't understand why Conrail went through the effort of ripping up the tracks along the entire corridor instead of just abandoning and leaving it to rot
This is incredible, thank you for filming this. I’ve been following the saga of the Cutoff for years, but since I no longer live in NJ, I can’t really go see it for myself.
I know exactly where you were standing. I didn't know it was called Colby Cut. Do you know where that name came from? I recently filmed the section along Stanhope Road bridge, and I get super nervous I'm gonna slide down into the cut. I've always got one arm wrapped around a tree while filming with the other. Nice shots, by the way.
thank you very much. Once you do it a few times, it gets easier. I am not sure where the name came from. I do know where the nick name of the tunnel came from. When snow melts it forms ice in the tunnel. Calling it the ice tunnel as its nick name.
Ed, While I appreciate your excitement over the rebuild of the Cut Off , I just can not get on board with the idea of people leaving their cars to make this a viable run and use of millions of dollars . I would love to see Amtrak run from Nashville to Atlanta , two of the fastest growing cities in the eastern half of the U.S. In spite of millions spent on studies of this service since I moved south in 1981 , NOTHING has come of it. They want a high speed line , when a viable rail line already exists. They did run varnish on jointed rail in the 40's and 50's , but now they cannot pull it off with ribbon rail !! I just do not believe the Cut-Off rebuild will EVER get folks out of their cars . The traffic in Atlanta and Nashville is BEYOND bad , this is where the $$ should go. Just my 2 cents here !!
That is exciting news to hear that the Cutoff is coming back to life in the future!
Great to see the new video and the progress on the tunnel itself. Looks like great news about Amtrak possibly returning. Keep up the great work!

@@_SP64_ greed. They likely used a lot of the rail elsewhere, and they generally didn’t like other rails taking over their abandoned lines.

I want to purchase tickets on the first train out of Andover Station!!!
This was one of our destinations at 3am in the 70's after the original SNL
That Colby Cut will be something when it fills up with snow !! They better have a big rotary plow with about five engines pushing it.

Names of the cuts were often a landowner where the cut was placed. Chuck Walsh of the Lackawanna Cutoff channel discusses this in his videos.
Thank you for this great information.
Is there any activity at or in the tunnel?
Yes. Inside the tunnel.
What a massive waste of $$ . This could only happen in the Northeast !!
Not a waste of money at all.
Oh , but yes it is . This trackage will be re laid and the trains will probably run ..... someday... but will hey be used ?@@edholderproductions
Yes they will be used all the time.
