Bought bare bones B550. Populated mobo with a 5700G, 2x16GB (32GB) Crucial SODIMM DDR4-3200MHz, & Samsung SSD EVO Plus NVMe 1TB. Worked flawlessly on numerous performance tests. I ran tests on the APU with included 120w power brick or with Corsair SF750 80+ Platinum PSU (750 obvious overkill). The performance tests were essentially identical. Then tested with a MSI AMD Radeon RX6700 XT. Of course the results involving graphics was impressive, e.g., 3D Mark Time Spy graphics 1340 v 12121 (even CPU increased, 8435 v 9708), Fire Strike graphics 4209 v 34815, Night Raid graphics 17748 v 122743). CPU temp high was consistently in the lower seventies on Cinebench R20 & R23 and mid-seventies running Passmark Perf Test 10. I have another 5700G in an In-Win Chopin Pro mini-ITX case (not impressed with case, novelty) sans GPU and the CPU performance tests were better as the 5700G could be OC'd residing in a ROG Strix B550-I Gaming. When I tried over or under clocking the CPU in the Minis-Forum (Besstar Tech Limited B550) mobo the performance test scores decreased. Reset bios to OEM to get the best performance scores.

Your cat is not broken. Your cat is operating within' nominal parameters.
I wonder if the quad display was meant to be done with some DisplayPort daisy chaining? I'm still skeptical that the iGPU alone could do that though.

I just went on to the Minis Forum website and they have already updated their website from quad 4K displays to Triple 4K displays.
I'm glad that they appear to be receptive of the feedback that they get from reviewers.
Also sadly though, they got rid of their 64GB of RAM/512 GB SSD option. :(
If they had a 64 GB/1 TB option, it would be up for consideration.
That would be AWESOME if they updated their BIOS so that you can drop a 5950X in there.

  • @kojack57
    @kojack57 2 ปีที่แล้ว +25

If it was as simple as a bios, firmware update to allow for a 5900 or a 5950x then I'd place an order for one today. As was said, if you use an external PSU for the gfx card then why not allow a higher core upgrade, turn down power consuption and still have access to those cores and threads.
Maybe if Minisform and other form factor builders built a bios which actually applied settings and had say a default profile for the 5700G while in bios, a hardcoded factory locked profile for a 5900x and one for a 5950x and all you had access to was say ram speeds. That's a fair middle ground.
No one would expect nor would it be fair to expect full fat performance from thoes processors in that FF. Thread and core count yes, all day every day and an easy compromise. Otherwise a very nice system. The 6xxx mobile series should be fun and interesting and perhaps even allow for higher C/T count which I'll happily pay for. Please, take my money. But fix your damn bios. As is, this is so so close to perfection and what even the most hardened high end users want. Build it and we will buy it.

    • @NamelessPassenger
      @NamelessPassenger 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Why go for 5900/5950? Because there’s no integrate gpu, so it means you had to use eGPU and that made this potential is a waste, b550 can’t deliver enough juice to show the superior of ryzen 9…also the cooler is just too small to handle anything exceed 65wh. Instead you should go for the HX version which actually have a cpu on par with desktop version and had igpu or build one yourself in sff case like velka 3.

Small form factor server. Even if it might lack some storage connections.
Despite of that, would be excellent for, say, my use - as a small home server, with limited cTDP, and of VM/Dockers/Containers etc.
Wouldn't need the graphics outside of it crashing so hard that the hypervisor won't start. In fact, the graphics/APU would just be wasted electricity.
Edit: Could use the x16 port for a 10Gbit NIC, that might potentially be useful.

Seems like a much cheaper way of getting an external GPU than buying a thunderbolt box. If you use the PC in more than one location, but only need the eGPU in one of them, it seems very useful if a little niche. For example, it could be an occasional HTPC in the living room, then easily moved to another room for gaming or work. As for changing the CPU, just having the ability to put it in another system is quite handy, considering Lenovo's locking them to one machine on their SFF's.

Just long enough to see I was in windows. It worked well for exactly five minutes. As soon as I booted into windows the first time after making a user name, it just broke. I thought it was a shame. I really wanted it to work, it was great value for money. I have a Mele Quieter3Q now. Very pleased with it and quite the bargain. All Intel chips too. Anyway I got my money back. No problem.

Instead of cutting the 24 pin clip you can use a sleeved extension cable, where one end goes on the existing seasonic plug (not in the PSU itself like sleeved replacement cables) and the other in the MinisForum doodad
Not everyone has sleeved extensions laying around admittedly, but I do use them for testing purposes as I can swap a whole PSU without unplugging the cables from the motherboard itself.

Quad display is possible because DP supports daisy chaining two displays per port. Don't know if you can do two 4k displays with the version of DP they use, but 4 is definitely possible if you have support on the monitor side of things.

You can buy them but they are just as big
It wont be like a laptop power brick as those can be smaller due to using higher volts than 12 psus
I have 1 that came from 1st asic btc miners
Its ofcourse thicker cord and is 4"x10"x3" and if i recall was 400w
      With a tiny fan
And if they made a bigger psu to power everything that would mean it would use high voltages like 20v or more then need a lot more circuitry on the motherboard to break that down and also provide high amps to 12v pcie
Lets just say it would lose size fast
What they should have done is make a board that does convert to high amp 12v then you could use laptop psus on the dock aka pcie backplane
Which im sure is just pass through so you could add any pcie backplane
But then the cost of that board and psu would price this out

The chipset is the one that determines if the thing can be upgradeable or not. If they have a BIOS that supports it, you can use the CPU. A good example of that would be the MSI B550M MAG MORTAR mobo. It can fully support the 5950X with the proper BIOS upgrade.

NFS Hot Pursuit as a testing medium O.o? How old is that game now? I remember playing it to death on console then they brought out that very sad attempt to MMO Hot Pursuit which ended up a total flop, it was hardly challenging graphics wise when it came out on PC and the MMO I could play on my ancient HP Elitebook i5 lol As for GTA 5 we all know it will run on a baked potato these days so hardly a "stresser" and I can play that on my Google Pixel 6... I have always wanted a small form factor but I don't want to end up locked into a socket that looks set to be changed fairly soon as the model range evolves with age and performance... Always like to see a mobile AMD, to think of the hundreds of Barton mobiles I murdered back in the day in the quest for stable 3ghz single core then one exceptional 1700M came into my possession and I ran it at 3ghz for a whole week then it died tragically taking out my expensive DFi board but I basked in the glory of joining the 3ghz CPU murderin' club scoreboard :D

If only the big OEMs like Dell (alienware) would bother trying to improve their products like this.
Right now, the inverse of the old "nobody ever got fired for buying IBM" applies to Dell.

With gaming laptops coming with 300W power adapters, I don't really see why they're limiting the system so hardcore like that! Also, if you're going to be including a dock that requires an external ATX power supply, why not create a pass-thru connector to leverage that power supply instead of using the included brick? That's just wasted potential, IMO!

What's the point of a system with high CPU performance and low GPU performance for HTPC?
Just encoding for Plex? Do people not play games? Run emulators?
I know a lot of people run Mac Minis, but the same question applies for those too.

5700G to something else does however give more pcie lanes, and pcie 4 , sure - the lanes makes less sense for the formfactor.. And dont get me started on the pinouts on different PSU's.. That's just disturbed thinking from vendors.. colorcode the rated wattage for the cables, and just darn nugget make a standard.

so much potential, shame their bios is so bad, and i dont understand why there would be a horrible 2666mhz speed limit on memory on bigger cpu´s, since the mem controller is inside the cpu, and only the pcb/lane quallity should matter afterwards. Almost seems like just power mannagement issues or bios related stuff.

I wonder why this isn't more of a thing? Desktops shouldn't still be huge boxes like the 80s. IMO they should just stop making large ram. Like in your recent video about the Intel modular approach, that is about all a computer should be, that little square, though still modular rather than all on the same pcb. I wasn't aware that AMD was going LGA, which is interesting. A bit sad though because the pins are so fragile. Maybe we get some standardization? To save resources, these companies don't need to be making laptop AND desktop things. As long as the do not go proprietary, I think our niche segment would be happy. I think the size desire is mainly based on those things, proprietary nightmares and better performance desires. I feel like we could or already have passed that apex
What is your take on the smaller GPUs? Could they move to something the size of one of those tiny mobos? You could essentially have a sandwich pcb machine, and there are slimmer PSU's.
I just checked the site says like 600 USD starting.
