Trying the Palmolive Shave Stick for the First Time!

  • I've tried the Arko shave stick and loved the lather, but hated the smell. I had to throw the thing in the garbage after I used it! In the comments of that video, I had a ton of people mention that I should try the Palmolive Shave Stick. I was very generously sent one by Martin in the UK and now it's time to try it out and see how I like it.

    Palmolive...the smell reminds me of my maternal grandfather. I loved their entire bathroom, it was all blue: The sink, the board above the sink, the tub, the toilet and the water reservoir. And you didn't pull a chain to flush, there was a translucent knob on the reservoir, which was mounted right above the toilet. My parents' house was built in the 1930s, and the interior design hadn't changed much. We didn't have a tub, either -- my kid brother was bathed in a vat that was also used during livestock butchering. To me, my grandparents' bathroom was simply beautiful, and it smelled of Grandpa's Palmolive and Grandma's Lancome face cream.

    Been using a La Toja shaving stick lately as a special occasion soap, not so much rubbing it on my face. I do instead cut a thin slice and stick it to the bottom of my bowl. Definitely adding the Palmolive to the list of soaps to buy on the trip to the US, thanks for sharing!

    #1. To my nose Arko smells exactly like a old school bar of Ivory Snow Soap. It does not bother me in the slightest. I will never understand the fuss some people make about it.
    #2. Farzad's Barber Shop(In Yale Town/ Vancouver B.C.) has many TH-cam videos and many of these feature shaves by Farzad and Master Barber Noriko.. Point being, Farzad is considered a "Expert's Expert" and he distinctly stated that no matter how well you shave; there will always be stubble felt or heard when passing the blade over it. Point being, it is pointless trying for absolute silence of the blade over the whiskers. But if you touch the same area shortly after completing the shave; it will feel smooth. Consider this and perhaps your habit of over shaving may abate.

    Greetings from New York City, man---------Palmolive shave stick is great---Agreed-------But you peeled off too much foil---It's supposed to protect the stick as it's being used, so that it doesn't decompose----Tip: Peel off just the amount that you'll need to expose the soap, i.e. 3 mm or a quarter of an inch-----Some people say that Arko smells like citronella----I don't know----To me, it smells like powdered laundry detergent.

    I like the palmolive shave stick, and have purchased two dozen of them through that auction site. As I understand it, this product was manufactured and widely distributed in the UK at 75 pence until a few months ago. It disappeared from shelves in the UK. The price has increased in the USA, and availability is "dodgey". It is manufactured in Germany currently.
    The glide on this soap is middling, but the lather is great and the cushion is fine. The scent is fresh and soapy.
    As you refine your face lathering technique with this particular stick soap, you will find it to be a lather monster.

    • @SinatraLennon
      @SinatraLennon  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Seems like a lot of mixed info on availability. I wonder why that is...

    • @ivermec-tin666
      @ivermec-tin666 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SinatraLennon Brings to mind the old story of three blind men who describe an elephant as a snake, a tree, and something else which escapes me... a rope, I think.
      Folks in the UK watched it disappear from the shelves without explanation and started to speculate, and horde. Palmolive finally issued an explanation, which was kind of weak, and did not address the question of whether the German mfg sticks would be distributed retail in the UK. Then there are rumors of folks having supply issues in the EU proper. Retailers running out and not knowing if and when a new shipment will come. Clearly, there are distribution issues in the retail chain in the EU and UK, and even in the USA. There appear to be no such issues with the Palmolive cream.
      I don't know the bottom line. I'm just a yank. IMO, the UK shavers were spoiled by this product at 75p. I have never seen it less than $2.00 in the USA ($2.80 in bulk when I purchased online a few months ago), which makes it 2-3 times the cost of Arko for a stick that is 1/3 smaller. But, it doesn't have the polarizing scent profile of the Arko. It actually smells nice. Perfect for travel, especially if you have one of those vintage bakelite tubes to store it in.
      Palmolive shave sticks and PolSilver de blades are two iconic products in this space that have been mishandled in terms of pr, marketing, and distribution in the last year. I hope these issues get resolved.

    Personally, I bought the same "grinder" they use at olive garden for th cheese and I chill these sticks in freezer then "grind" them into an old TOBS container and load like any tub soap.
    It's literally my favorite stuff.
    Edit: I was told about 5 years ago it was supposed be discontinued. Not sure if that's true, but I did buy enough for a lifetime.
    I have some older "red cross" sticks which had a different ingredient list. And well probably 25 of the non red cross ones.
    Also picked up 10 tubes of the palmolive shaving cream because it's awesome too.

    Parmolive is a strange company, they stop selling it in some countries, say it does not sell, I have just found a company that sources it from Germany they say it is one of their top sellers
    so I am happy, my partner also uses it for her legs etc.

    I have an Arko and a Derby shave stick along with a few Palmolives I bought off Amazon. The Derby smells a lot better than the Arko, kind of a spicy-soapy scent.

    Just curious, do you have any thoughts on any of the shaving oils out there?

      I don’t feel the need to use them myself, but a lot of folks swear by them!

    The Arko does have a rather strange smell, but I like it. Never tried the Palmolive but I’m going to give it a try.

    For anyone who likes using shaving stick, try boots shaving stick. £1.50 for 50g and does a great job.

    The last time I used a Palmolive shaving stick I just about had hair sprouting out on my sack of potatoes. Didn't know they still made them.
