Simple Minds and U2, two best band of 80s and wonderful song. One of the bests moment in the history of the rock-pop music. Simple Minds, one of the bests live band ever. Bono is really great, but Kerr as a frontman and live performer like few others. I love all of this
First heard this at the end of a U2 bootleg cassette tape I picked up on O'Connell st. bridge in Dublin back in the late 80's. Simple Minds were the bigger band back then.
This was my first gig - aged 14. Thank god I got in - what a gig - topped off by bono duet! EVERYONE loved both bands at the time - well they did in Glasgow :)
This is amazing. I was 18 and there that night with a contingent from Wishaw, Lanarkshire. The Barrows was so hot that night. Will never forget when Bono came on. The place went bananas!
reliving this in my head as I listen... 1st gig ever at 15 years old... one of the best nights of my life.. got a bootleg tape of this gig which gets a play periodically just to keep the memory alive... nice one
Seen Jim & Charlie at the SSE Hydro in 2015 watching U2, Bono asked them if they was coming out to play during CEDARWOOD ROAD. Still have a great friendship after all these years.
I remember this gig well.... overnight sleep on Glasgow streets to get tickets from Virgin... the chaos that ensued before the doors opened, police on horses and boots window giving way! Mr Forbes was sorely missed, even on the current tour!
@childofOmelas The ticket made me laugh! No cameras or recording! Now everyone takes pictures and records everything!!! What a nightmare it would be to try and keep them all out! Love U2 and Bono!
In the late 90s, Jim Kerr & Mick MacNeil went to a U2 gig in Glasgow. After the gig, backstage, Bono saw both men and said "Shit, you lot aren't getting back together, are you?". That line just about sums up Bono's respect for SM. He knew they were always a threat to U2 and he knew Mick leaving the band had killed off that threat. Such a shame the 2008 full band reunion of JK, CB, MM, DF & BM didn't last, but it seems Jim just wasn't prepared to give everyone equal status.
At least SM have not ended up playing Vegas and are still making good albums (after a long 15 years difficult times) not like the 3 latest U2 records (I am not even talking about their latest karaoké album..) 😢
BONO AND JIM KERR EARLY 1985 TOGETHER IN GLASGOW BARROWLANDS COME ON HOW COOLHOW FUCKIN COOL 2 OF THE BEST LETS SEE THIS AGAIN BONO AND JIM MAKE IT HAPPEN PLEASE PLEASE
They were very creative, in one of the most creative period of rock'n'pop, darling. We called this "the new wave", and every one who dive in it, surely stayed somewhere blocked in his mind since. Simple mind was one of them and one of the most magnificent. We were waiting for the next album religiously and they confirm their success 3 or 4 time then disappeared a bit. But of course, your dad had also loved Depeche mode, U2, The Cure and so on who were great too. It was so powerful to live this for a teen, dear, that surely many of us forgot to work at school for a long time... hope they succeed despite all.
boutineau louis U2, DM and The Cure are STILL great, they are still "alive, kicking and tourin" lol btw I will see DM and U2 here in Mexico City pretty soon . Cheers!!
Simply LEGEND.....Simple minds and U2 best band of the 80's....but Simple minds ,in my opinion are a better live band!...mel gaynor and derek forbes are better than larry mullen jr and adam clayton....and Mick Mcneal is simply a genius!....btw I saw 16 Simple Minds gigs(the 1st one in 1984) and 15 u2 gigs(the 1st one in 1985)!..anw Simple Minds & U2 4ever ciao cheers greetings from Italy!
In my opinion Bono makes a mess of it by shouting 85, 86, 87, 88. Would he like it if Jim Kerr was invited onto his stage to sing One and he made a mess of that, I don't think so.
81,82,83,84 get it right. The point is two great frontman on the stage at the same time. Jim joined U2 on stage during 11 o clock tick tock in Belgium 83. Been friends since
Been wanting to WATCH this on video my entire life. Unfortunately, this is not it :( It must have been a blast to be there. I was 8 when this happened. I still wish someone pulls out a long lost forgotten vhs tape from a remote corner of their basement with this live show. Maybe someday.
my cousin got me tickets for 2 nights of said gigs, cause i come from england he made me wait from 7.30 so we could get to the front first.git.................
Unfortunately Jim Kerr had one too many conversations with gasbag Bono during ‘84/85 and got influenced by him as a result. They went in a more stadium rock, “big sound”, political messaging and overall cheezy direction afterwards which ruined what Simple Minds really were: edgy, futuristic, romantic, and unique.
And I think that is exactly why Derek Forbes, one of the best bassists of the era, left the band. He probably saw this starting to happen with Sparkle in the Rain. And I’m a big U2 fan. I just think Bono and U2 already had that stadium thing covered. I wish that SM and taken a different path. Not a fan of anything after Sparkle.
@@larbeargonzo832 I completely agree. Derek Forbes was awesome. Mel Gaynor gets a lot of praise but most of the drumming on New Gold Dream was done by the previous drummer with Mel coming in for some additional takes as a session drummer at the time. I personally found Mel’s style too bombastic and overpowering but seems that’s the direction Jim Kerr wanted to take the band. They also had U2 producer for Sparkle in the Rain. It’s a fantastic album but does get too grandiose and arena sounding at times. It was indeed the last album I like from Simple Minds. Likewise, I think U2’s last good album also came out around that time: The Unforgettable Fire.

So much passion, you don’t see or hear that in the same way today. F..k, this take still gives me the chill!
the best gig of all time ... 2 best frontman in the world ever forever
i was at those gigs...was standing in front of Derek, then Bono came on....the bloody place erupted!!!!
What I would give to back in time and be there 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻

I had this bootleg album, bought in Barcelona. It was white vinyl and amazing.
I got the white double LP from local charity shop, think it cost me something stupid like 50p, paid and ran out 🤣😂✌️
If I was there I would have lost it. Talk about influencial bands. Some much talent on that stage.

they probably wanted to make some money. who can blame them.
Esta guapo pero se oye de pena
And bono dog biscuit starts whining and ruins a good tune😂🤣
The version from the other night is considerably better.
Derek Forbes bass tho😳when he left they kind of did too
